On Sunday 4th May 2008, Power of Scotland is back and with it will see a return of the exciting 8to1 Muay Thai tournament, this time set at 55kg! The tournament will feature some of the best bantamweights outside of Thailand and will be fought under Full Thai rules from the start and fought over 3x3min rounds.

The 8 fighters involved in the 8to1 are, from left to right:

  1. Reece Crooke (Evolution, England) – Consistently one of the best bantamweights in the UK in this decade, Reece Crooke is determined to avenge his loss to Ness in his last trip to Scotland at the end of 2007 and put himself back on top of the pile of UK Bantamweights again!

  2. Albert Chey (Impacts, France) – Chey is a quick and skilful fighter and a natural bantamweight. Although he has lost to Howsen, Chey will be determined to settle the score in addition to proving he is one of the finest bantamweights around, even if it means going through his stable mate Ocania!

  3. Graeme Ness (Fighting Fit, Scotland) – After coming off a disappointing performance against Dean James at the end of 2007, Ness is focused on getting back to winning ways and have a shot at some of the best bantamweights around.

  4. Andy Howsen (Bad Company, England) – Having claimed wins over almost half of the fighters in the tournament, Howsen enters as a strong favourite with a reputation for enjoying a scrap, which the crowd are certain to enjoy!

  5. Sebastian Ocania (Impacts, France) – After what can only be described as a demolition of the tough Scottish fighter Robert Weir on POS1 to win his ISKA European title, Ocania’s return to the POS stage is sure to please the Scot’s who loved his relentless attacking style! Although among the smallest of the 8 fighters, Ocania has the experience and skills to cause any of the fighter’s problems.

  6. John Dick (GTBA, Scotland) – Scotland’s Featherweight champion will be making his debut at 55kg and with a reputation as a tough and durable opponent, he will be a difficult fight for anyone in the 8to1! Coming off some great performances in 2007 Dick is keen for the opportunity to prove his worth against some of the best bantamweights out there!

  7. Shane Cadogan (Cork, Ireland) – After picking up the WPMF World Featherweight Title during his long period spent training in Thailand this year, Shane’s debut on POS will be eagerly anticipated by the home crowd.

  8. Dean James (Pra Cha Suua, England) – Making a return to the POS stage, Dean James will receive a warm welcome from all of the Scottish fans that remember his awesome technical display at POS2! This up and coming fighter may be among the least experienced in the tournament, but he certainly has the skills to take this title!

In addition to this amazing tournament, POS4 will feature a host of cracking support fights!

Arguably Scotland’s best pound for pound fighter Rab Burt taking on Andy Thrasher and hoping to show the rest of the UK why he so highly regarded in Scotland!

The rising Scottish star John Douglas will be challenging Liam Robinson for his ISKA British Title. Both fighters have nice Thai styles and it is bound to be a clinical and technical fight!

The rest of the card will be announced shortly, but is looking like another great event!

I’m also really excited to announce that POS will be moving to The Lagoon in Paisley. This venue is better suited to the event, with a rough capacity of 2,500, which will produce an amazing atmosphere for the event. The facilities are also being refurbished at present with the first wave almost complete, so will be a great new home for the event in the future. The Arena at the Lagoon was home to Paisley’s Ice Rink, however the ice has now gone and the facility will now be used for events. However, Paisley’s Ice Rink was no stranger to top class fight action, as Sonny Liston, Sugar Ray Robinson and Mohammed Ali fought there back in the late 60’s, useless but interesting fact.

Anyway, I also have the tickets ready, so any fighter or instructor that I haven’t spoke to that needs some please give me a shout. Tickets can obviously be bought from me directly (discount available for over orders over 10 tickets), local fighters and instructors or from Musclebound on New Street in Paisley. Tickets are Unreserved, so basically first there on the day will get pick of the seats and you’ll have the flexibility to sit in groups etc. However, this time there is a danger of certain tickets selling out, so get in quick. Tickets are separated into 3 bands, Ringside (£50), Tiered (£25) and Standard (£20 and £10 for Under 16’s).

If you are looking for Ringside, please contact me directly, as fighters will not be given any of these tickets unless they are sold. Last time their was a lot of tables held for people how pulled out at the last minute, therefore, tables will only actually be reserved when payment is received.

For regular updates on the event, check out the website: www.powerofscotland.com, which will be updated shortly and regularly updated as the event develops.

I’d also just like to thank everyone that has helped so far in organising this event, I think this will be the best POS yet!

Thanks guys, really pleased with the way things are going this and think the tournament will be another hard one to predict, which is what we want to see, hope I get to watch some of this show!

I'm afraid not Noi! LOL.

Joen Claude, Damien wasn't available to me, but thankfully the Bantamweight catogory has loads of great fighters, which is why I decided to it in the first place. I also lost TS2 to injury, which was disappointing, but happens all the time in this sport and I hope he heals well and hopefully I'll be able to get him over in the future. But despite this, I still think its a brilliant lineup and also have backups in place, which will be revealed later. All of the fighters seem very determined to fight in the 8to1, outwith the obvious financial incentives, they all have something to prove and I think it'll be the best 8to1 yet!

Gaz, its Full Rules from the start of the tournament, so yes elbows in the inital fights, but all fought over 3x3mins with a 1min rest.

Sorry mate, can't have the international Superfights and the 8to1 on the one show, needs to be some Scots involved in the support fights on this one, unless you want to move up here??? LOL.

Yeah the guys are lightening, brilliant technique and also loads of attacking styles, can't wait!!!

The promoter has to be O'B-1!!! LOL
liam badco
Posted: 2008-02-21 08:27:35
heres my take on the 8-1...Sebastien will be too small and will take too much punishment to win the tourny but whoever gets him will be goin into the next round after having a totall war so expect some injuries....Chey has a nice style but Howson walked straight through it last time...Chey and Dean James would be nice to watch...I aint seen Reeco fight for ages so cant really comment, but hes very tough so will give someone a hards night work...A year ago my only worry for andy would have been could he go 3 fightsin 1 night with his ridiculous style, but hes proved more than once thats not all he can do and is on a roll since coming back from his injury....him and chey have mixed it at a higher level than the others but you cant write anyone off in a tourny....will be some great fights.
Robinson and douglas will be a good fight but same size and build but with Robinson the slighty uglier than the too.....

Gary i wont take this thread down as long as you tell me where the hell my dvd is from the last one :)

Ps my offer from what i said in glasgow that night still stands lol

Liam, I'd tell you if I knew buddy!!! As for the offer, I'm flattered and all, but when you said you and Howson were "cousins" I didn't realise it was that! LOL

Sorry Andy, dyslexia kicking in, its fine on the one sent to the printers though! So no my bum talk on here please!

Howson V Crooke Final (as a rough guess rather than a prediction)
Close one to call as all are very durable and very fast...and with elbows in the mix from the start who knows.

Good call O'B-1! :)

I take Andy Howson to win this, but anything can happen with this format. Everyone thought Michael Dicks would win the last 8-1 but he didn't, plus its elbows from the start, which will suit Howson he loves it lol. My money's on Andy.

The force is definitly strong with this 8to1! I wouldn't be beating any cash on it anyway, Craig Jose was hardly mentioned last time and he out in an amazing shift to win it. A lot of it will be down to the luck of the draw.

what is the best airport to fly to?
any recommended hotels to stay in in the area?
can i still get some ringside tickets?
Gary O'Brien STBA
Posted: 2008-02-23 13:28:12
Peter, I'll upload some images of the Lagoon soon.

Chris, the venue is just under 2miles away from Glasgow International Airport (GLA), which you can get to with Easyjet, Flybe, BMI Baby etc. Glasgow Prestwick (PIK) is actually about 30miles away, so best to fly to GLA if you can. I should have the competition hotel confirmed next week, as looking at a couple just now, but if you send me an email I can get you a room in there at a cheaper rate than normal. Can also sort out your ringside tickets then and anything else you need.

Golden Child, I've only got a handful of fights on the undercard to match, I'll probably post any difficult ones next week. Just looked on your profile and seen your details, do you still fight junior or do you fight unpadded etc? Could you email me details for your coach?

Sounds like Howson and Cadogan had a great fight yesterday, so just makes the 8to1 even tastier!

Good luck guys for what is becoming one of the premier events in Europe, never mind the UK!

New venue too. Exciting stuff.
The original Paisley ice rink was in East Lane, about a mile away from the Lagoon. It's a Somerfield supermarket now. And yes, Mohammad Ali (still known as Cassius Clay at the time) did an exhibition bout there in 1965. I love all that local history stuff. Do a Google for Paisley and Witch. Interesting!!

Haven't been past the Lagoon in a while. Are they extending the car park? Parking was pretty sparse as I remember. ( Worth noting for anyone travelling by car )
Gary O'Brien STBA
Posted: 2008-02-24 12:27:49
I actually read that he had 2 bouts BLZbub, in front of about 5k people, I didn't quite believe it when I found out!

The Lagoon is the flagship for Renfrewshire Leisure and they have loads of plans for the facility. They've just finished a new sports complex extension and finishing a new reception, plus moving and refurbishing a lot of facilities inside. Their is actually plans to expand the front carpark a bit, but this won't be done for the event. However, the plan is to direct any overspill into the council carpark across the road from the venue, which has more than enough space.

However I'm trying to call in a favour and get parked in the Police HQ, which for any fight fans who are prone to naughtiness, is also just accross the road!

LINEUP UPDATE

The 8man lineup remains unchanged from the original lineup above. I’m still waiting on a few confirmations for the supportcard, but here is a couple more matches.

One of Scotland’s most dangerous MMA fighters and the STBA Light Welterweight Thai Boxing Champion James Doolan, hopes to put himself in the mix with the top UK Light Welterweights after taking the signifiant scalp of Rung, Scotland’s adopted Thai who always excites fans with his aggressive style, this is sure to be an explosive match!

Another up and coming Scottish fighter looking to improve in his strong performance on POS3 is Ritchie Hocking, who will be fighting a rematch that won him a junior British title last year against Chester’s John Henry McNamara. Both of these young fighters have improved significantly since the first match and if that fight has anything to go by, this is set to be another great fight!

For all of the Thai Boxing purists at the show, who appreciate good technical fighters, they are bound to enjoy the match between Tommy Young, a fighter who fights with the skill and style of a fighter far more experienced than himself, who is fighting Wayne Fisher, a young up and coming fighter from Carlisle, who made an impressive POS debut last October with a quick win by stoppage on POS3!

The rest of the card will be announced shortly!
noi666
Posted: 2008-03-03 09:18:36
Does that mean James Doolan is fighting Rung in a rematch? Or he is fighting MMA? Or he is fighting a "yet to be named" opponent, in MT?

LOL, sorry Noi, James is fighting Rung, A Class Muay Thai!

Here is the supportcard fights announced so far:

  1. John Douglas (NKT) Vs. Liam Robinson (Pra Cha Suua) (66.6kg) A Class

  2. Rab Burt (Base) Vs. Andy Thrasher (GFC) (67kg) A Class

  3. James Doolan (Dinky Ninja’s) Vs. Rung (Thailand) (62kg) A Class

  4. Ritchie Hocking (NKT) Vs. John McNamara (Kaobon) (72kg) B Class

  5. Tommy Young (Caledonian) Vs. Wayne Fisher (Carlisle) (63.5kg) B Class

I meant to put this up earlier, this is a rough sketch of the venue to give an idea of eating. The Tiered seating is also starts from a level around 10ft of the main floor and raises with each row. I'l try and get a couple of pictures up.

I've not mentioned it so far, but had a lot of people being nosey about the prize money for the 8to1. Its a total prize money of £4,600 for the 8to1 with £2,000 of it going to the winner. Which should provide a decent inncentive to win, but to be honest, although the money is important, most of the fighters asked about the money after they said they wanted in!

Obviously it'll look a lot more different for the event, but this is an image of the Arena and will give you a rough idea of the layout. As I said, it'll comfortably hold about 2-2.5k with the ring, staging and catwalk, depending on the layout, so is a very big venue, but will provide a much better and more confined atmosphere.

Yeah mate, looks like the hotel I'm using is on the same street, just down the road. I should have confirmation by the weekend, as trying to negotiate the price and bounce 2 of each other. If you give me an email I can sort you out with a cheap rate.

Looks like a brilliant venue Gary. Is this in the refitted ice rink or in the bit thats recently been built?

Id love to see you coming on here in 4 or 5 weeks saying "SOLD OUT".
The atmosphere would be outstanding ( it will be anyway )
Gary O'Brien STBA
Posted: 2008-03-04 16:11:32
Yeah Liam, thats true, Rung obviously has the better skills to play the Muay Thai game, but Doolan fights with a lot of intensity and seems to have a KO radar, will be interesting to see.

BLZbub, its where the ice rink was, they've basially removed the ice and put a temporary surface down to use for the likes of football etc, while the new extension is finished off. The new sports complex is basically just a games hall setup. The Arena hasn't been given any face-lift yet, but there is plans to give the whole complex a bit of a refurb from what I understand. I was in today, they have been building a new reception and to my relief most of the construction is done and all set to be finished this month, so no problems for the event! Really looking forward to it!

I'd love it to be sold out in 4 or 5 weeks mate, but most people leave it to the last minute to buy tickets. Saying that, although the venue could hold 2.5k, I've submitted my layout and its set for abut 1.8k to make sure everyone gets a good view and allow for a massive catwalk and staging etc. So I think it will be sold out. I reckon the atmosphere will be brilliant, I remember the Hockey there and the atmosphere was good with less than half the spectators we'll have, so it'll be a brilliant atmosphere especially when Vinny does his demo!

I think Doolan has much better hands then Rung and think he will surprise some people in this fight. Rung does however have the experience and great kicking ability, i think it will be a good clash of styles. Both great guys and should be an awesome fight.

Posted: 2008-03-05 07:13:01
My bold predictions are, Rung to win on points. Doolan has got dynamite in his hands but Rung's experience should keep him out of harms way.
John Douglas vs Liam Robinson is a very hard one to call, both fighters are highly impressive but I'll stick my neck on the line and back my mate John to nick this one.
Rab Burt vs Andy Thrasher again another hard one to call, this could possibly be fight of the night.
Ritchie is my mate and so I'll be backing him to win as well.
I don't think I've seen wayne Fisher fight before but I do know how good Tommy Young is and if he fights as well as he did on POS2 I reckon he'll win.
cannaebebotheredtraining
Posted: 2008-03-05 07:27:19
I'd put money on Doolan to win inside 3 rounds, any takers?

I'd also be predicting wins for Thrasher (KO), Robinson (points) and Tommy Young can't decide if it'll be KO or points, I'll leave that up to him.

Gonna be the best POS yet.

When I confirmed the fight with James and Rung the other day, Rung said he was going to start training now, so hopefully he'll have a good level of fitness come May and this fight will live upto expectations. I honestly don't know how the fight will go, the general concensus seems to think Rung points or Doolan stoppage, I think it'll depend if Rung gets involved in a battle or fights with his brain. One thing I do know, is that he was angry with himself after POS2 for getting carried away with the crowd and going for a quick KO and ended up being on the recieving end of one from Noi and he realises that James is also a very dangerous fighter! He is also a very proud man and always wants to represent himself and his country as best he can, so I think he'll be taking this fight seriously and I think he'll try and keep a cool head.

Pettttter, the junior price is only for the standard seating area.

Id go with james to beat rung and tommy to win as well. I know anything can happen in a tournament but id say andy and shane both have a great chance of winning although there are some other quality fighters in it. Robinson v douglas will be a good technical fight and although robinson has more full rules experience id say whoever is the stronger physically will take it. I like rab and thrasher so ill keep my opinion to myself on that one.
Hope ritchie from stba wins as well.

Rung has forgotten more about Thai style than Doolan will ever know, but style doesn't win fights. I have huge respect for Doolan. He is a very dangerous lad who has proved that he is able to make the transition from Freestyle to Thai, and do it very well indeed. Strong grappler with probably two of the most competent hands in Scotland. Rung can be a little cavalier with his guard at times, and does take far too many head shots in my opinion. He simply can't afford to do this against Doolan.

Gary O'Brien STBA

Finnie, start saving up your pocket money, POS doesn't come around that often!

I shouldn't mention that the Catwalk will be about 25m long then Darren, Luke would be nipping your head for the next 2 months! He definitly would show most of the fighters up!

Liam/Dougie, Rung was reading AX last night, I just asked him, so maybe he will post later.

The first draw on POS1 was done live on Radio Scotland the day before, obviously for publicity reasons. The 2nd one was done as Dougie said, at the start of the event and I personally thought it worked great, as everybody was kept on their toes and it really helped keep the excitment going. So my plan is to do it like that again, unless another publicity opportunity comes up.

Jobson, I think Doolan has only had about 3/4 Thai fights, but did kickboxing back in the day and has had loads of MMA fights. He has taken Thai fights at very short notice and managed to stop Matt Duncan to win the STBA Light Welterweight title and in his last Thai fight on POS3 he stopped Alan Jamieson, who give Rung a brilliant battle on POS1. I believe both fighters can win this or I wouldn't have matched it I guess.

I picked up the flyers today, so give me a shout if you need some.

So if Doolan doesnt stop Rung by round 3, then you pay out.

...or if Rung stops him first!!!!
If Rung lands a left kick (as he did against me), it could be a short nights work!!!! :)

Doolan to win by ko. just becuase he hasnt fought a lot of thai doesnt mean he not awesome. lets remember hes got a scottish title and ko'd the guy in 1 round to get it(matt duncan), another highly rated scottish thai boxer (alan Jamieson) didnt even last 2 rounds with him. and in addition to that he didnt train thai in the build up to these fights but stepped in on a whim. to underestimate james's thai skills would be a big mistake in my opinion.

Mugger, i didnt win by a point so dont no where you got that from? i won by 3 rounds on 2 judges score cards, the irish judge gave it a draw?????????????? Shane is a class act and you can see that he spent a long time i Thailand. I didnt fight the best i ever have but i felt the best i have ever done, training wise it went perfect, i wasnt at all tired at any part of the fight and if needed to copuldve picked up the pace at any time. Whoever gets him in the first round will defo be feeling it if they do win and go through to the next one, he is one of those fighters that you hurt yourself on, Reeco is the same as i no from 3 silly fights with him already, lol. I no that Chey has been wantiong a rematch since i beat him a couple of years ago but i was crap on that night, was meant to be fighting a top 5 ranked raja thai which all fell through on the day of the weigh in and i didnt want to even fight after that but had no choice so wasnt in the right frame of mind for it so if we do draw each other at all we will both be trying to prove a point, Chey is a really nice guy too, came out with us after the fight, and looked after Liam and Badger when they had been let down at James fight and they wouldnt pay him.

Its gunna be a good laugh whatever happens though and am looking forward to it.

Andy,I see you have placed a lot of question marks about the draw from the judge, but tell me why did you enphasis that the judge who gave it a draw was Irish, are you suggesting it was scored this way because of nationality? I dont see Shane questioning the fact that the other two judges were English?

I thought the fight was very close and both fighters showed great skills and heart in the fight, when one judge cannot separate two fighters on points that is why the other two judges are there and majority rules.

Once again a great fight and well done to both of you.

Redraven lets not start eh? and im not saying its and english or irish thing at all, just saying he obviously doesn't no how to judge Muay Thai thats all. Just happens he was irish and was fighting over there you can think as you wish.

No probs Andy, as for "he doesnt know how to judge Muay Thai" thats a very harsh and ignorant thing to say as you know nothing of the judge in regards to Muay Thai, I believe the judging was acceptable on the night by all of the judges as nobody compained, infact his scoring was the same as Tony M. in one of the bouts, I cant imagine that would be regarded as bad judging.

Chok Dee Andy and good luck in POS.

Hi Liam,

Im not disputing your opinion Liam your entitled to your view as much as the next man. And to be fair as long as you keep CASTING spells with your Muay Thai magic in the ring I dont think anybody minds about your bad spelling!!;)

Anyway I think this thread has been hijacked enough so back to bizz on POS!!

the third judge regardless of nationality for a relatively inexperienced judge did a top job on the majority of the fights, shane is very well schooled and knew himself he did not draw the fight but im sure the judge in question will have reviewed it and seen why it was not a draw and will take that experience forward to the next A Class contests he scores. the things to take from that fight that make this exciting for the tournament for me were:- Shanes style, technique and toughness and Andys fitness and strength in the clinch. Kantippong rematch warfest would be class and very tight.

Didnt Kantipong just get swoggled all over in Germany? albeit at 60kgs?

Looks like a cracking line-up.

I think there could be a few shocks in this. ;)

Raven i wasnt having a pop at the judge, far from it, i won the fight thats all i came to do and all i care about, and had a great time in the process, meeting new people and the night out afterwards, and Shane is a great guy and a really nice kid, etc, etc. But after watching the fight again when i got home and Chanoy watching it and telling me yeah no problem i had to think how the hell can 1 judge give it a draw? thats all my point is, not slagging said judge off, and robbo just saying he was quite inexperienced say's it all and i didnt no that so fair play to him and he will get better. But when the fight was announced to us Richard straight away said we wanted different judges as we had been told that the decision that Dean James had got over there a couple of years earlier was a bit dodgy so maybe anougher reason for me saying what i did earlier. Home town decision do happen on occasions we all no and have seen that and we just wanted to make sure that couldnt happen, but didnt need it at end of the day. No more carrying on and back to the thread.

Oh and robo id beat Kantipong now no problem, even Duwao said so when he was here, Kantipong doesnt train anymore, just smokes shit loads and fights whenever, has lost his last 8 fights and got beat in Germany only a week or so ago, shame cause after he beat me he mashed through the Raja ranks and went from number 5 to number 1 in months and ko'd the then wmc world champion in the toyota tourny, and won Omnoi title.

Raven, i werent being funny i like shane and im not sayin the rounds werent close, Shane scored very well but andy didnt lose a round,....shane has sharp left kick, teep and boxing will cause big problems in the tourny......Kantipong at 60kg is ridiculous, hes 5foot4 or sommat....ask him if he wants to move up another kilo and ill fight him lol

its a shame about kantippong but it would be exciting if he gave up the smokes and had a few at stadium then came back for a dingdong at 54KG,after he went back he went on a warpath obviously his donkey kicks were nice but the little boxing whack offs u 2 had in that fight were class i was thinking may aswell start kicking again as andy aint going down off a punch.
It wasnt a massive win like a 50-46 against shane but as anyone has seen it who knows the criterea it was a clear win which in no way is derogatory to shane or andy. more and more you study thai fights and scoring you see things different people think a hammering is someone getting beat down for a few counts and losing 50-42 or getting sparked but thailand people would say a 50-47 is a hammering, this has nothing to do with the andy shane fight but still interesting to see how its interpreted differently.
1 point is close
2 points is clear win
3 points is a bit of a beating
4 points if one boxer didnt do much barr turn up lol
watching fighters at stadium you can see how they still class a beating as a points win. not much of that here most looking for the stoppage but on a lot of shows you need to if not confident on the judging :-(

Unfortunately, Reece has withdrawn from the 8to1, but I'm happy to announce a very strong replacement in Colin Johnson, who I'm sure will be a great addition to the mix. Colin is used to fighting at a far heavier weight and if he can maintain his strength at this weight, he will be very powerful, combined with his aggressive style, I’m sure he’ll be a handful in the 8to1!

  1. Colin Johnson(Premier, England)

  2. Albert Chey (Impacts, France)

  3. Graeme Ness (Fighting Fit, Scotland)

  4. Andy Howson (Bad Company, England)

  5. Sebastian Ocania (Impacts, France)

  6. John Dick (GTBA, Scotland)

  7. Shane Cadogan (Cork, Ireland)

  8. Dean James (Pra Cha Suua, England)

noi666
Posted: 2008-03-20 02:38:06
Thats an ace addition to the mix.
TBH I dont think the weight will be too much of an issue as he weighed in at 57kgs for his last fight. Plus with the amount of dietry advice on the Beamish Sports website (Premier and Beamish has close links), they must have some good nutritionalists working with them.

Plus with Colins explosive style I think this not only adds to the line-up, but I think he can really shake things up. Sure Col used to fight heavier, so as long as he loses weight in the right way he should carry that down with him.

I think the "potential" spread of weights across the tornament goes from about 52kgs (Sebastien/James) to 62kgs (Howson/Chey/Johnson).

Just to let everyone know that I don't have many Tiered tickets left and the majority of these are going to a couple of fighters, so if you are looking for any tickets please let me or your local fighter/representive know asap. Thanks. Single matches is a different story and would feel confident against any of them 1on1 5x3's full thai normal fight. (as have already beaten half of them,,,big head, lol) but in tourny differnt altogether, you get a tough fight 1st round and thats you having to work extra hard for the rest of the night and injuries etc. But saying that look at Craig Jose in it the other year? no body thought he'd beat Dicks and that fight was a right war, and he went distance in all 3 bouts and came thru so you never no i guess. Really looking forward to it though should be a good laugh.

this in no shape or form will be a walk in the park...3x in one night with dangerous fighters like the ones here aint gonna be easy...i think andy is up for this too but he will have a tough night and he knows this anything can happen in tournament, id have a grand on him to beat all in a single fight and halk by tko but i dont wanna splash my cash around in tournament format...all it takes is one strong block from someone or 1 solid lowkick and your legs are mashed goin into the next round, with elbows from the beggining too its gonna be carnage all over the place....

Gary what you gonna do if a fighter wins but gets badly cut and cant go to next round??? or both fighters get cut??? do we have stand bys.....Wheres craig willis??? :) :)

Posted: 2008-03-27 12:51:50
Liam, funnily enough I’ve changed my mind about this a couple of times as making it FTR from the start does make it more of an issue. I have a couple of standbys (for pullouts or anyone not making weight) for the tournament and depending on what happens with pull outs over the next few weeks will dictate if their is a reserve fight or not. If so, the reserve fight will only come into play if someone can’t continue after the first round, as I don’t think its fair for someone to come through a reserve fight and possibly go straight into a final. If someone cannot continue into the final then the place will be offered the runnerup, as effectively they are physically in the strongest position to go through. In the worst case scenario and both fighters cannot continue, then we would rematch the other semi-final, or maybe hope Craig is at the show and has his gummy! LOL. The medical staff have already been informed that fights have not to be stopped for cuts that aren’t of a seriour nature or bleeding into the eye, so even if someone is cut, unless it is a bad one or in a bad place then they can come back out to fight in the next round.

Raj, the other fights will be announced when confirmed, can’t mention anything else in the mean time.
Nige

Tiered tickets are pretty much all gone now (if you've spoken to me on the phone your tickets are reserved or in the post for you), I only have one book left for our gym, if anyone needs anymore, then I'll put them on a waiting list for any tickets returned to me. However, I still have some Ringside tickets and 500 Standard tickets and if any fighters want some of these tickets please let me know.

With just over 5 weeks left to the show, the possability of selling out looks quite high and the venue is going to look amazing with a more or less packed crowd! Their may only be a handful of tickets on the door with last minute returns, so don't leave it too late to get your tickets!

Most of the talk (rightly so) is about the tourny. But after watching Thrasher's war with Phil Pullen last night and Rab Burt winning last week as well, this fight could be the dark horse

Yeah Darren, I think your right, Andy is always good to watch and Rab has been looking sharp in recent fights, so will be good!

Been meaning to update the lineup, got 2 updates, which I'll try and get up later, as I'm just running out.

Been asked by a few about the weigh-in, its planned for Sat 3rd from 6-8pm at the venue. The hotel we are using is just down the road from the venue, which is the reason I picked it and I have a decent rate. If anyone thinks they may need some rooms and haven't already been in touch let me know asap. There are other hotels we can get you into nearer the time, but will involve a bit of extra travel etc.

Only 4 and a half weeks!

Had a couple of people asking about the distance from the Airport (Glasgow International, less than 2 miles away) or Train Station (Paisley Gilmour St., less than 1/2 a mile away) to The Lagoon. Its actually closer to the Airport than B-head is and the Watermill Hotel is just along the road.

Had loads of people wanting hotel rooms and just to let you know that the hotel is going to be quite busy at this time of year, so please let me know rough numbers asap.

Just a quick update for GARY, as the AX virus issue has attacked his laptop.

...just wanted to let everyone know that any spare Tiered tickets have been re-allocated, so a few kicking around just now and maybe a small number on the door with the odd lst minute return, but realistically sold out, with only about 400 Standard tickets left and some Ringside tables.

I'll hopefully be able to update the lineup tomorrow!

Hey Kyle, really good to meet you aswell mate, see you in THREE WEEKS!!! Not that I'm counting!

Thanks Pisand! Last week my phone got wrecked with the virus's on here and my computer was playing up as well, so I've avoided coming on here. Still playing up a bit, where did the pictures go???

Anyway, been a few developments in the last week with Shane and Colin having to pull out of the tournament, this was unfortunate and a bit stressful, but I'm happy to announce I've got to good additions to mix it up again.

The first addition is Dzmitry Varats from Belarus! Anyone that was at Wolverhampton a couple of years ago and seen him beating Damien Trainor will no doubt remember him, very tall and skillful and very hungry to win this! He was only 17 then and since then he has been fighting at a good level and I understand his got even better!

The other addition is Willium Murphy from Siam Warriors in Cork, Ireland. I haven't seen Willium fight, but he is a naturally bigger fighter and has had some good wins recently at 57kg.

So the lineup just now stands at:

  1. Dzmitry Varats (Grodno, Belarus)

  2. Albert Chey (Impacts, France)

  3. Graeme Ness (Fighting Fit, Scotland)

  4. Andy Howson (Bad Company, England)

  5. Sebastian Ocania (Impacts, France)

  6. John Dick (GTBA, Scotland)

  7. Willium Murphy(Siam Warriors, Ireland)

  8. Dean James (Pra Cha Suua, England)

Can't wait to see what the draw looks like!

Just to let everyone know there is no Tiered Tickets left!!! I have reallocated all spare tickets, Musclebound only have 5 left and I already have a growing waiting list for any other returns. Might be a few on the door, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I only have about 80 Ringside and just over 300 Standard Tickets left, I kow everyone will be waiting till pay day at the end of the month, but don't wait too long!

I’ve also matched two other fights to break up the action a little bit.

First addition is Paisley Kickboxing Legend and Multiple World Champion, Lex Easdon, who has won the WKA, 2x WAKO PRO (Middleweight & Supermiddleweight), ISKA, 2x WKN (Middleweight & Cruserweight) and Golden Belt World Champion! His Record is 52 Fights, 51 Wins, 1 Loss and 40 KO’s! He is taking on a great fighter from Belgium, Geoffry “Superman” Spittael, who’s CV at Light Middleweight is: WKA Bronze Word Championship, Belgian Champ, Benelux Champion, WFCA European Champion Kickboxing, WFCA World Champion and also WKN Belgian Champion at 76kg. His record is also comparrable to Lex’s with 48 Fights, 41 Wins, 2 Draws and 19 KO’s.

Lex Easdon (Paisley) Vs. Geoffry “Superman” Spittael (Team HTK Belgium) (75kg) FC Kickboxing

The second addition to the card is a Pro MMA fight, between a familiar face of the Scottish Muay Thai scene, John Cullen, who fought on POS 1 and 2 and has recently started to impress in the world of MMA. He is fighting Nathan Kirk from Knottingham, who has also made a transition to MMA after gaining significant ring experience in Kickboxing. John has an aggressive and exciting style and his fights in POS 1 & 2 were among the best Muay Thai fights of each event, so it will be great to see him show off some new skills!

Hi gary, and Good to see you down at JohnJarvis show, let me know what we was talking about if anything changes?
and if you need another English Judge?
and what happened to the 2 pullouts?
I thought colin was mad to try for 55 when Nige told me that i was gobsmacked ! hes 60 kg lightweight and Powerfull, thought 55 was too light imo
anyway...
And Further to Dazzathais comments
yep best fight this year andy thrasher and phil pullen

I spoke to Colin this weekend and he was on target to get to 55kgs.
He weighed in at 57kgs for his last fight!
He told me that he has pulled out for personal reasons, rather than any weight issues. Hope everything works out pal.
Gary O'Brien STBA
Posted: 2008-04-14 04:14:39
Hi Sandy, I know everyone is curious when there is pullouts of a fight, but I generally don't explain them. All that matters now is that we have some good replacements and IMO a very exciting tournament and card as a whole. There might even be another change or 2, but I still have a few more options for standbys, I guess thats why there isn't more 8man tournaments, they are murder to keep matched, but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end.

Can anyone that wants rooms booked or has said they may need one confrim asap, as I need to submitt my room requirements to secure them, thanks!

Soz beag but as much as i like colin (which i do as he and all no) im not buying that he would have made the weight, not in a million years, he is cut to shit at 59 and looks awful at that, at Master Skens in October he weighed in at 59kgs and was half dead, (and scales a kg light) if Col had have made weight he would maybe have been ok for 1 fight but due to been so drained he's have died off for a second bout. That kid from Belerus is massive, and never stops throwing a shot. You just fooking no im gunna get him in the first round......bastard.lol.

Posted: 2008-04-21 16:48:32
Sorry Guys, very busy with the run up to the show, so no time on here. Plus, my PC still isn't liking Ax!

Craig, the event is scheduled to run from 2-8pm with the doors at 1pm. I only have 250 tickets left, which are starting to fly because pay day is coming up next week. I expect to have some tickets on the door, but I've been keeping in touch with fighters and not expecting too many returns, so if paying on the day, might be a good idea to get there early or at least give me a phone before hand and see if I can reserve them for you.

WEIGH-IN will be at The Lagoon, from 6pm-8pm on the Sat night. I didn't want to show everyone the venue undressed if you like, but means we can explain to everyone what is happening on the day and where they have to go etc.

I have a couple of small changes to the lineup, but just waiting on confirmation before posting it, but will get it up asap!

Been finalising all the plans over the last few weeks and I think this is going to be the best yet! Obviously loads of hurdles with a new venue, but looks like we'll have a full house, really excited about the lighting setup etc and got a brilliant lineup, so can't wait!

Had last minute requests for Ringside tables and been asked what is included. To be honest, the ticket price really just covers the premium seating and table service, but you'll also be served some food, I wanted to provide something substantial instead of usual buffet stuff, so we'll be offering some Thai Chicken or Veg Curry with Rice and Popadoms etc. But only three tables left, so if anybody wants them, please let me know asap.

There will also be other food and a licensed bar at the event, so most can take advantage of the bank holiday weekend!

If anybody needs anything, please give me an email or a phone.

Meant to say aswell, been asked about Parking, there is 3 small carparks at the front of the Lagoon, but there is also a large carpark with another 300 spaces at the council building, which is next door to the police station, which is across the road from The Lagoon. Its also only about 5mins walk from Paisley Gilmour Street train station.

Liam, need to see Fighters Inc. about DVD's, out of my hands mate. Think they'll be busy until after Seni. Although I'll be responsible for this DVD and working on it after the show.

As for Sambuca, I might get it in for Davie! LOL. The bar will obviously be a simplified one, a few types of beer, few alchopops for the SHAG crew, cider option and the more popular spirits like Vodka and Bacardi etc.

I think Liam R and John D is going to be a very good fight, Liam is probably favourite due to experience and size, but I wouldn't be surprised if John puts in another cracking performance and wins it! His performances over the last year or so just seem to get better, if he can keep it up it'll be a great fight!

Simon, Yeah the Cop shop is directly across the road, so nothing too revealing with the Swimwear!

I was holding off to update the lineup as I do not have Visa confirmation of my sub for the 8to1, although seems to be going ok! Unfortunitely last week, Tommy Young got injured, I lost the Doolan Rung fight and Graeme Ness pulled out the 8to1. But have confirmed a Thai replacement for the 8to1, his name is Somboonbab Pumphanmung, Ex Thailand Champion at 112lb by beating Yoksila for it, who was the guy that fought Damien Trainor in London.

i can't upload images but the lineup just now is:

POS4 55kg 8to1 Muay Thai Tournament

  1. Dzmitry Varats (Grodno, Belarus)

  2. Albert Chey (Impacts, France)

  3. Somboonbab Pumphanmung (Thailand)

  4. Andy Howson (Bad Company, England)

  5. Sebastian Ocania (Impacts, France)

  6. John Dick (GTBA, Scotland)

  7. Willium Murphy (Siam Warriors, Ireland)

  8. Dean James (Pra Cha Suua, England)

  1. Marcus McDonald (NKT) Vs. Chris Ferns (Base) (64kg) C Class

  2. TBC Vs. Wayne Fisher (Carlisle) (63.5kg) C Class

  3. Adam O’Neil (NKT) Vs. Robin Downer (NKT) (60kg) C Class

  4. Raj Singh (GTBA) Vs. Adam Little (Dragons) (70kg) C Class

  5. 8to1 Quarter-Finals

  6. Lex Easdon (Paisley) Vs. Geoffry “Superman” Spittael (Team HTK Belgium) (75kg) Full Contact kickboxing

  7. Wullie Dempster (Dragons) Vs. Paul Kelly (Wossobamma) (66kg) B Class

  8. John Douglas (NKT) Vs. Liam Robinson (Pra Cha Suua) (66.6kg) A Class

  9. 8to1 Semi-Finals

  10. John Cullen (DNFT) Vs. Nathan Kirk (Gladiators) (65kg) Pro Rules MMA

  11. Ritchie Hocking (NKT) Vs. John McNamara (Kaobon) (72kg) B Class

  12. Rab Burt (Base) Vs. Andy Thrasher (GFC) (67kg) A Class

  13. 8to1 Final

Gary O'Brien STBA
Posted: 2008-04-25 18:30:43
Thanks mate, you going to come up? Any predictions, as you've mixed it with a few of these guys and maybe best placed to make a prediction?

The plan for the draw is to do it before the show starts, unless I get some good media interest to do it at the weighin, then that will be the plan. It keeps the edge on it if knowbody knows how they are fighting till an hour before. Basically, numbered balls in a bag and drawn. Some people advised doing it the K1 way with the 2 pools of fighters, or even doing 2 pools with the 4 heaviest and lightest. But I think the fairest way is just to put everyone in and do it at random.

I've went through about 15 fighters for this 8to1, so been hard going, but so excited with the lineup. Need to thank all the fighters and coaches that have been involved in whatever degree, if its half as good as it looks on paper, I'll be delighted! Also need to say thanks Paul Sutton for helping secure Varats and also to Dean White, who has been a great help in confirming a good Thai addition to the lineup at very short notice and also the guys at the WMC for making quick moves on the Visa.

Yes mate ill be up.

Anything can happen in tournaments so couldnt/wouldnt place a wager lol and all are eager to win so it should be superb.

Dzmitry Varats:- Is a tough lad and game and the tallest in the tournament i dont remember him blockin much and died off the 2nd half of our fight so it would be intrestin to see what hes like in the later fights.

Albert Chey:- Chey for me is the most stylistic fighter in the tournament very clever and beautiful to watch but doesnt like pressure.

Somboonbab Pumphanmung:- cant comment dont know him

Andy Howson:- we all know Andy either 2 of him can turn up the waring Andy or the clever one hopefully the clever one turns up for the start of the tourny then the nutter can show up at the end lol

Sebastian Ocania:- Sebastian is the shortest in the tournament (hes even shorter then me lol)hes constantly in your face so be ready for a fight but very prone to be hit with elbows.

John Dick:- i havent seen enough of John to make a comment

Willium Murphy:- cant comment dont know him

Dean James:- Deans prob the 2nd tallest in the tournament with a good boxing brain & skills also hes eager to prove himself against the top lads in this tourny.

Cheers Reeco!

Thanks Damien, great to have your insight into them!

Keepyerguardup, I'll tell John to get in touch with you first, next time he asks to be put on earlier! Afterparty will kick off at Kilty Kilty, which should be good as there is about 60-70 people staying in the hotels and with it being on the bank holiday wkend, should be busy.

Just to confirm Alan Butler from GTBA will be taking the fight with Wayne Fisher, 65kg, C Class.

Just of the phone talking with the trainer of Sebastiën Ocana & Albert Chey.. Very excited to let them go next week. Both allready are on weight allready. Both had special preps for the tourny and both are injury free. Both are in this to win it and will give there very best to do so.. Think the tourny will be very excited.. The only downfall to it all would be both of them meeting in R1.

Also Geoffry Spittael is very excited fighting at POS and hope to show you scots a great fight against Lex Easdon. Geoff is on weight also allready yesterday at 73,2 so still a week to eat loads of burgers!!

See you all on saturday, we land at 14:00u i think.

yeah Liam, I like the warmup and cooldown fight structure and done it before, but thoguth it only fair to give the 8to1 fighters some time in between fights to refuel etc. Thats why Rab V Andy and John V Liam are the build up fights for the later stages of the 8to1 and get everyone going again.

Looking forward to seeing you and the troopas again Guy!

Was at Kenny Burnett's show today and saw a few instructors that are bringing some people to pay on the day, so maybe an idea to be there early if you haven't got tickets. Without any returns there is only 200 left and its not even pay-day yet. If you want me to hold any for you please let me know asap. Likewise if you think you are going to have over 10 returns, please let me know if you haven't already done so, thanks!

Adam Smith from Carlisle was fighting today and came through uninjured, so will be our reserve fighter for the 8to1 incase their is any last minute problems, which helps the stress levels a bit. Adam is quite small comparred to some of the others, but has some good techniques and has dynamite in his hands when he decided to throw them, so ould drop some bombs if he's thrown in!

Yeah their is a couple of good hotels, think John Jarvis's group are staying at the Holiday Inn @ the airport for the same prices as above. The main reason for using the Watermill is that its a 2min walk to the venue, so fighters can come & go a bit.

Looks like everything is sorted for Somboonbab's VISA, which is great news. No changes in the above linep either.

Tickets are going aswell with everyone getting paid, think their is about 130-140, so going to be an amazing atmosphere! With the lineup & setup we've got its definitly the strongest POS event yet, can't wait!

Tickets are still going steadily & only about 80-90 left, so looks like I'll not be able to give out any late tickets soon. But I'm expecting some returns to come back on Sat night, so there will be some on the door, including tiered.

Looks like everything is thankfully falling into place, the handover for the new Lagoon reception is tomorrow, was worried it wouldn't be ready, but looking good,

just in cant comment on the full show, too busy trying ( and failing) to get rung away from the bar. raj sing , fair result, tight fight raj won it in the final rounds,, Andy v Somboonbab Pumphanmung, the Thai seemed to be taking the fight fairly easily when his shoulder popped out(apparently he has a problem with this)john Dick beat his opponent with relative ease. john Douglas took his fight no problem the 8 count in the 4rth sealed it. the semi final the Belorussian took howson apart before a disgraceful right elbow sealed the deal and Oceania beat john dick. Ritchie hocking won convincingly, and Rab Burt was beat in a close but fair decision.never seen the final but oceana won

Congrats to Gary OB, thought the venue was great - good seating, great views and some well matched bouts !

The 8 man was very open and a great format, anyone could have won it...some very good contenders, enjoyed watching Dean James, shame he got a knock ! Slightly disapointed the Thai got injured too, it was shaping up to be a good fight with Andy.

Verats is a nightmare fighter - arms like Mr Tickle and confident - I thought he was going to walk the final after beating Andy, he looked razor sharp but then he tired in the final fight and Oceania did what he had to do to beat him - clever tactics - well done to the little man!!!

Thrasher v Burt was a good bout, and Robinson v Douglas was technical....thought Robinson had a strong last round with the body kick, maybe the knock down in the 4th was too much to pull back ? Both had nice styles to watch !

Highlight of the show was the Beachwear Walk-off !!! LOL

"i really would not pay to watch any Thai fight again, these people are just coming for a holiday lazy boring and unfit"
dunno who you were watching but from my viewpoint (ringside) he was clever calculating and was winning when his shoulder was dislocated (found out later this has happened a few times)if you watch the DVD you will see him pulling on his arm and then trying to fight on before stopping doctor had to reset his shoulder in the ring and despite his diminutive size the doctor struggled because of his strength. the Doc told him to go to A&E, (he declined) then was told to keep the sling on for 3week(it didn't make 3 hours),had this fight gone the distance he may well have won the 8man,and won what would have been about six months wages, dont think he is going to be lazy with that on the line.

Massive Respect to Gary O'brien for keeping up all the hard work, and changing venues was the best thing for the show the whole set-up was amazing.

It looked to me that the thai took a dive when howson high kicked cause it didnt look as if the kick landed and as sn as he went dwn he then jumped straight back up and ran to his corner.

I would like to thank all the sparring partners and pad holders that helped with johns training. i thought it was a really close fight but the 8 count helped with the decision of the fight we knew liam was a gd counter fighter so we played him at his own game and it obviously worked. but credit to john this was a big step up for him and he took it well showing he can move to that next level.

I thought varats won!! Oceania was fouling constantly but referee never done anything about it.at one point the ringside tables were booing the tactics of oceania shame really took the shine of the final for me.

Rab v Andy was a very close fight, I thought Andy was loosing until the knock down, hence the reason I flipped when the ref did not count it but fortuantly all three judges scored the knock down! We'll do a rematch but would have to be for Rab's title, both lads where okay I think afterwards, what about Leeds Town Hall?

Eight man was a little wierd, I gave Chey the first fight againt Mr Tickle, it was a very close fight but Chey had the stronger techinque and was the fighter at the end of the fight. At breakfast And Howson was prediciting the Thai in his firtst fight, as he decided he was the favourite (the Thai) When he beat him I think he just forgot about fighting the others really. Oceana looses his first figth and then wins the tournament,

Was a great set up and a great venue and we would love to be back!

Cracking show all round.
Standout individual performance for me was John Douglas, I have to be honest and say that I was certain Liam Robinson would have won that. John Douglas didn't stop though, showed real determination, fitness and good technique. I agree that Liam put on a good comeback in round 5 but he would have needed a ko at that point.
The Thrasher v Burt fight was really good, If it hadn't been for the knockdown I think it was going Rab's way. Unlucky mate, bloody close. Thrasher was his usual powerhouse self and a knockdown or knockout is always on the cards when he's fighting.
I'm gutted for Andy Howson, I was really hoping he would win the tournament but it was not to be, sorry mate.

SHAG crew, what can I say, I think we stole the show, lol.
I apologise to crazylegs who was certain victory was his, sorry mate.

Apologies to Rab and Andy if the sight of my bare arse made you lose focus.

Well done Gary on the promotion mate, it was my favourite yet and the venue was absolutely perfect.

Finally, (sorry for going on so much) Best of luck to Scotlands (probably uk's) best MC, John Lamb.

my opinion is that the thai fighters i have seen in the uk do not come with a great attitude to fight, the thai was kod in rnd 1 but the russian fighter beat andy with ease its not difficult to work out cannebebotherdtraining watch the fights learn instead of going on about shag crew etc.

liam robinson did not win that fight and i gave the fight to andy thrasher on the last round this was by far the best show i have seen this year

As I said above, Andy was firing on all cylinders for the first fight against the Thai, and I dont think theres many at 55kgs that can trade with andy when he is in that mode.
Saying that, for the 2nd fight, when your flat and stalling, you obviously arent gonna put in a stella performance which andy wholley admits.

I am sure Rob Cox will give you all the information you need, on stats, on the Thai, if your questioning his credentials.

LOL. So many tournaments with those toss ups and surprises. Much respect to everyone in the 8-man and sounds like a cracking show. Will there be a DVD this go around, Gary?

thai tillidie or whatever your name is, do you ever know what you are on about? the thai had an injury whilst disloacating his arm- how does that make him unfit and not ready to fight????? im sure if it had carried on it would have been a great fight with him and andy, but congrts on andy to the win and a great add to the cv. i did not see the varatz and chey fight so cant comment but did hear that chey cam on strong in the last round and it was even up until that point. jon dick took a well earned points win against a tough and game will murphy. that left dean to fight---- dean once again performed to his ability against a much more experienced sebastien, dean used his weapons well kicking and kneeing well, seb is a tough fighter who just keeps coming, dean even said i thought my knees were bouncing off his abs after the fight, unfortunately dean had to pull out his next fight due to injury, but congrats to seb for getting back in and winning the tourny.
me and yoda had a bet on the final, and i was confident in my blue corner chioce in varatz, however i lost my bet :(
i did think liam r had won still but being in his corner and friend is a bit one sided watching and not literally judging, ill pass comment when i watch the dvd as im sure so will many others. enjoyed watching thrasher fight, it was a good close fight and the uncounted knockdown was the deciding factor in it i think, good win for andy well done mate.
really proud of dean and liam. they will both be back big and strong for their next fights im sure. well done to everyone who fought, and congrats to gary on another great show.

thaitilidie you werent even there you lying cockhead so fuck off and go post on another site under another alias!!!
Andy and the thai were 50-50 both were landing kicks across each others body!!! and thai had the biggest calfs ive seen! the dislocation came when Andy threw a right kick and the thai threw left punch (he was southpaw)and andy kicked right up high on his shoulder and it ended up in the otherside of the arena!!! the thai was a real nice guy and gutted he didnt go home with more money!! why would he come all the way over to jump on the floor in the 1st round and only get £150 when he could get that for a fight in a province??????????????? some people talk utter shit! As peoeple said Andy was gutted with his performance and he gave him the fight cos he struggled to get himself up for fighting again!!! Its not the end of the world he will be back stronger and probably at a lower weight cos he was the lightest and apart from sebastien he was noticeably the smallest yesterday!
Dean and sebastien was a great fight!! was close but dean was a bit sharper and stronger in the clinch and showed massive heart to carry on when his rib broke in round 2!!!!
Sebastien is a complete nutcase hes been beaten by every english fighter hes fought but none have hurt him hes made of steel!!!! Was glad he won cos i fought the russian was gonna pan him!! oh and i although id had a few beers by the time that fight i didnt think he was fouling! he beat the russian easy! which is very difficult cos hes dangerous!
highlight of the weekend for me was rung! he was class from start to finish and mashed all over from start to finish!! cant wait for the leeds show to take him out after lol!
was mint seeing everryone i had a right laugh!!! well done to gary for the show!!!!!

Was a fantastic event and for me it was better than Braehead as a venue.
Just a few things that stood out for me...
Andy H vs the Thai - there was no way that the Thai wasn't working?!?!? Not sure what fight you were watching, but it seemed tit for tat until a really unfortunate injury - it was shaping up to be a cracker. And sitting ringside and hearing(!) the doc trying to put the shoulder back into place was just awful.

I was looking forward to watching Deano vs Varats in the final cos I thought Dean would walk his semi against Dick. As Dean was presented his win against Ocania you could see him covering his rib - obviously in pain. I didn't see the elbow that took out Andy H, but there was an impressive amount of claret very quickly which is never a good sign. I was gutted for Andy - to the extent that I was even consoled by one of the Scots guys on my table!!!

The final between Varats & Seb was brilliant. A real underdog performance. Ocania fought the only way he could against a guy that was massively taller than him. There was no fouling going on, just a very good (rough) grapple - and to be fair, it was well within Varats' capability to not get beaten in the grapple by a much smaller fighter.

Liam R vs John Douglas seemed like a cagey fight to me. Neither fighter wanted to over commit themselves from the outset but I did think that Liam was edging it... UNTIL a fantastic knockdown from an elbow by Douglas in the 4th. What we should be talking about is how the hell Liam managed to even make the count cos on the apron (we were ringside) at the count of 7 his eyes were totally detached from his body. Tony was screaming at him from his corner to get up and it was sheer willpower that he managed to make it to the end of the round. I thought it was fairly even up to the 4th, a massive 4th from Douglas and a fairly even 5th leaving Douglas as the winner, but only just. There was no one walking it from either side. Of course you can judge for yourself when you see the dvd - it always looks different from another angle. (And left Liam with a fantstic bruise over his left brow that looked like a devil horn!)

Ritchie Hocking was brilliant(again). John Mcnamara came out all guns blazing in the first, but Ritchie weathered it and (to me) systematically took him apart over the next 4 rounds.

Very hard to comment on Andy Thrashers fight without getting into a vitriolic rant. The referee was abyssmal. Full stop. How he couldn't have "seen" a blatant straight left that knocked Rab down in his corner beggars belief. Not sure how it works that 3 separate judges and a few thousand spectators can see it, but an official can't? Either way, it shouldn't detract from a fantastic fight with Andy as the deserved winner with Rab competing all the way to the end.

Not sure what happened in the MMA fight..! Just got started, then it finished! Disappointed with the kickboxing fight too, I was expecting a little more to be honest.

I wasn't the only one left rueing not having Tony Myers as the ref. I didn't catch the refs name, but he didn't seem to be able to referee a Thai fight. He was calling fouls where there weren't any; NOT calling fouls that blatantly were; stoppping perfectly good ACTION FILLED grapples way too early and worst of all, his counting of knockdowns was wayward to say the least. To be fair, on any other day with any other ref Liam COULD have been counted out by the time the ref had manage to ramble his way up to 7 (not taking anything away from Liam tho).

Overall it was a fantastic event and can't wait for POS5. Was good to meet Darren Phillips, Andy T and Andy H. Congrats to Gary OB, well done mate

Meant to say, I have NEVER seen a ref get so physical with fighters. There were a couple of occasions where I thought that the fighter might turn round and have a go at the ref for being pushed. One fighter (can't remember which one - was towards the end of the bouts) was nearly pushed THROUGH the ropes by the ref trying to stop a legitimate follow up after a technique.

and well done to young paul kelly who stopped a very durable wullie dempster with a peach of a high kick. On the referee, thats the 3rd time i have seen him and , as much as he is a nice guy he is terrible. last night wasnt his worst performance. for anyone tht was at muay thai mayhem in ayr a few weeks ago will probably agree with me.

Fair comment Dave im sure it was a long count too, seemed like forever. I think i took round 5 big but will watch dvd before passing comment, certainly wouldnt wanna make a song and dance about it, the fight was close enough for it to be a split decision from the neutral judge and my corner were happy enough with the work up to the count and then coming back to take the 5th. John was a top lad we had a drink and a chat after, how it should be, thanks to John and Gary O'B. Congrats to Seb Ocania he took some knees in the loss to Dean but stepped up his workrate to cruise to victory.

Power of Scotland 4 was a brilliant show and I agree with those who thought the venue was more suitable than the previous one. Well done Gary, his really hard working girlfriend and everyone else involved in putting on the show. I really hope you made enough to do it all again mate. I wouldn’t want the stress of it (I am old and grey enough) but I really hope you can face doing it all again as it is a brilliant showcase for MuayThai in the UK as a whole and not just Scotland. It was great to see my many friends from north of the boarder....and plenty of others from this side of the boarder too (and across the water) who had travelled up to watch, compete and prepare fighters. I wouldn’t be in this sport if it wasn’t for the people involved and the camaraderie surrounding it and I loved the atmosphere at the show. I thought the buzz in the changing rooms was great, lots of nerves but really friendly and supportive and that spilled over to the after fight festivities.

A big thank you to Wainey for running us all around all weekend and helping out behind the scenes (brilliant mate thanks), and to Damien (Trainor) for all the support and help, both before with sparring and advice to Dean, as well as helping out the corner. I hope I can return the favour in future mate.

For me, the 8 to 1 tournament lived up to all the hype with real excitement and drama and lots twists and turns. I thought he first round draws were great with
some really interesting matches and full of drama. Albert Chey vs Dzmitry Varats was an interesting clash of styles. Although I was only a casual observer rather than focusing on judging the fight, I actually thought Albert nicked the fight but it did look close and Dzmitry’s size and strength gave Albert real problems.

Everyone in that tournament must have been dreading being drawn against Somboonbab; who is definitely the real deal. Andy got him and must have been thinking “why me...why now?” but he kept his composure and pulled off a sensational win....what a scalp! I know you were pissed off with not going further pal, but that was a great result mate...and it was no fluke. Who knows what would have happened if Andy hadn’t caused Somboonbab’s shoulder to dislocate. The Thai's kicks looked bloody sharp and strong (...they're not just calves they are M&S calves was the quote of the afternoon from Jordan W lol)...I was glad he was kicking Andy and not me...mind you I wouldn’t wanted to be on the end of Andy’s either.

I didn’t know who to shout for in the Willie v John fight, they are both true warriors and more importantly two of the nicest guys in the sport. In the end John was a little too strong and Willie too drained at the weight. This would be a great rematch at 59kgs (I think both lads would appreciate not having to kill themselves to make the weight).

Sebastian vs Dean was a great fight; Sebastian a real veteran with a heart the size of France against Dean, new to the scene but definitely a star of the future. I couldn’t be more proud of Dean, not only for keeping a cool head and showing excellent MuayThai but for the courage he showed when his rib went. He did all that was asked of him and so much more. The rib was injured about 4 months ago in an accident at an interclub and it hadn’t healed properly. Dean had difficulty breathing when he came to the corner after the second but he went out and showed no pain. Dean I know you were gutted not being able to carry on in the tournament but you did the gym and me proud.

The second round fights were equally dramatic. I didn’t see much of Andy versus Dzmitry but what I did see was action packed...I also saw the cut. Andy desperately wanted to carry on but that was a bad cut....it looked more like cosmetic surgery in the changing rooms. You will be back...poss smaller and better, rather than bigger and better though pal (you looked really trim).

Sebastian put nonstop pressure on John in the second semi-final. John’s right arm was kicked so hard he could hardly hold it up but he never ever stopped trying to fight back showing true William Wallace spirit.

The final was exciting rather than a classic technical battle. I wasn’t observing closely enough nor was near enough the ring to see if Sebastian was fouling (I’ll have to look at the DVD). There were certainly some legal throws although possibly too much lower back grabbing during the night as a whole. I had my money on Dzmitry given the battles Sebastian had, had, but he attacked non-stop and it was Dzmitry who tired. Brilliant win. Dzmitry, Albert and Sebastian, despite language difficulties (I am crap at anything other than poor English) were really friendly guys and a credit to the sport.

Ritchie (Hocking) and John (McNamara) was another exciting fight swinging one way and then the other. Ritchie weathered the initial storm and showed some really nice skills to take the fight. Not sure what they feed him on but I should have had some when I was a kid.

Liam vs John (Douglas) proved to be an excellent display of MuayThai from both fighters. Both were cautious and calculating in the early rounds but the action hotted up later in the fight. I was impressed with John last year and knew he had good skills and a good MuayThai brain and he didn’t disappoint this year either. I was very proud of Liam who showed some excellent well timed MuayThai skills but most of all for getting up and attacking strongly in the 5th, after taking the count... great heart and a really cool head. Proud of you mate. It was a close fight (split decision) I thought Liam won the 3rd and 5th and possibly did enough in the 4th to make it 10:9 but I would have to look at the DVD unemotionally to make up my mind on the fight, and anyway it won’t change the decision which went to John and I have no complaints; definitely no point spoiling a good fight between two great lads who are a credit to the sport. Well done John mate really good performance and a good win. Would definitely make a good rematch sometime in the future though.

Great fight between Andy and Rab (both great lads) nonstop action from bell to bell. Andy’s style has improved so much and he is so much better now he uses his head as well as his heart. Well done Daz for helping him make the transition... and for getting him to run. Rab put on a great performance himself on what was a step up in class. I thought Andy took it in the last round and even though it is easy to criticise from outside of the ropes, I did think Rab should have been counted...another fight that would make a good rematch in the future

Frank the referee is a really nice guy who is doing his very best to learn and gain experience of refereeing A-class bouts...which seems easy but isn’t always as easy as it might look. It was a bloody long night for anyone to maintain concentration and referee all the bouts. Frank did make mistakes but we are all human and I am sure he will look at his performance with a critical eye and make adjustments for the future. I thought overall the judging was good. So well done to the judges (including our American friend who I heard good things about, sorry I didn’t get to say hello). The officials are the gatekeepers of MuayThai and as long as we all keep learning and testing our knowledge, the sport here will definitely carry on getting better and better.

A special mention has to go to McRung....a really good lad who made me laugh loads.

Agree the refereeing was shocking..If I remember rightly his name was Frank Watkins or something like that. Didnt look experienced enough to deal with the fights and appeared to ref all 3 styles on show in the same manner. Admit is was a long day for him though, but that doesnt excuse not giving counts to fightes etc.

Tournament was good, I went there hoping Andy and Dean did really well so came away abit disappointed. Dean fought very well though, just a shame he picked up the injury. In both short appearences Andy made he showed his nice style and grit that make him exciting to watch, the Thais left leg was rapid not sure how that fight would have ended up but no doubt Andy would have made a cracker out of it. The cut is massive! Didnt realise it was that big on the day...was it from an elbow or a clash of heads as I saw several people gesturing?

Seb Ocania was superfit - right little powerhouse who handled the tournament format so well. He fought the Varats in the final in the only way possible I could see him being beaten, truely deserved to take the prize pot by that point.

The MMA fight was shocking, we know the lad from Nottingham and said beforehand there is no way he should be in the same ring as his opponent, he'd had 1 MMA fight I think to his opponents 24 or so. We feared he was gonna get hurt badly, so luckily the referees lack of knowledge on MMA reffing appeared to be a blessing in disguise here.

I too was disappointed with the kickboxing fight, very scrappy for fighters of 50+ fights, clearly showed the difference between Thai and KB!

Also went there to get behind LiamR - he was looking in tip top shape. Some major concerns over the weigh in - with his opponent being allowed to weigh in at 11pm at night or something? Seeing his opponent, it didnt look like he had a weight advantage - possibly down to Liams ability to cut weight properly. Seeing as John Douglas had spent hours sweating weight off he looked very good in the fight. I wouldnt have been able to give Liam the decision watching the fight from the stands, John matched Liams kicking, always returning fire. He also used hands and elbows alot more. Liam ended up off balance on several occasions which I believe can effect the scoring. With the knock down it was only really heading in one direction for me, Liam had a stronger fifth round but I sensed it was too late - more forward momentum and agression from the 3rd round from Liam would have totally shifted the fight rather than leaving it to the 5th. Im no expert on scoring but I had him atleast 3 points down at the end. Maybe on DVD I may be proved wrong! Technically 2 sound fighters!

Enjoyable show none the less...was funny watching Rung drunk haha

Was interested to see how you scored it Tony, obviously was an emotional night for you with Dean and Liam both in action but we have alot of faith in your judgement, once you've seen the fight once more would be nice to learn from, the fight, being technical should be quite easy to score so will be a good one to advance our learning. A rematch definitely would be a ticket seller.

Hope Dean is ok - shame he had to go out like that :(

Cracking show gary and excellent venue!
Myself and Willie Chappell were in Lex Easdon's corner for his bout and can let Everyone know that Lex's knee ( Cruciate ) went in 1st round of the fight.
Lex's a very mobile, quick and intelligent fighter who counters very precisely and accurately. They don't give world titles away, never mind 7 world titles. Because of the injury his movement was severely hampered and when many would've retired in the fight. Lex stayed in there and tried hard for the Win.
Not seen much thai but was very impressed by the standard on show and the UK has some excellent quality out there.
Have only seen a few UK fighters before , eg. Liam Harrison - Who in my opinion is an awesome talent. Very impressive, clever fighter!
And Craig Jose - who also is very good and tough as nails.
Keep up good work guys..

Pictures from the Thrasher V Rab Burt fight, click here.

I did get some pictures from the other fights from up in the stands, but they're not great, to be honest, the lighting was a little dark (believe it or not). If I get chance I'll pick out a few of the better ones and see what I can do to brighten them up later in the week.

Top show! Although a little long, I thought, but great fights from start to finish! Congratulations and thanks to the promoter for a great production!

'the mma fight was shocking'... i don't think many of the mma guys check ax, but i work fairly closely with john cullen's mma squad, enough to know that john has not had 24 mma fights..when the mc announced the fighters, he said that the english lad had had 24 kickboxing fights?...also not sure why you're criticising the ref..the fight only lasted 17 seconds, and the english fighter was badly dazed from a knee to the chin in the clinch and as he dropped, john jumped on him, he went into a defensive foetal position which is not intelligent defence, therefore the fight was ended to prevent the fighter from further damage. it happened really fast, but hopefully the dvd will show the knee to the chin, thought the ref did the right thing.
Cracking show gary. Cheers.

Yeh possibly some mixups with the announcements, knowing of Johns opponent I stand by it being a miss match though, not through any fault of the promotion!

Im not big on mma but assumed a referee comfortable with mma bouts would have let it go on longer, the foetal position I thing does show the inexperience of the fighter from nottingham though. Im not doubting the knee strike - I saw 2 or 3 excellently executed techniques from John - I was glad it was stopped so we didnt have to witness a tooling!

Still can’t get on Ax on my PC, so posting this on my phone, so going to be as brief as I can, but will probably be another essay.

Many thanks to everyone involved in the show and everyone who attended, I didn’t get to see much, but everyone I spoke to had great things to say about it, so I’m proud of that! There were loads of people who done great jobs on and around the day and I really appreciate it, couldn’t do it without you all, even the ones that had travelled to watch it were chipping in, so really, many thanks! Have to give a special mention to Claire Louise, she is an absolute rock and since POS2, put herself through ridiculous stress and work. After the event I popped round to Kilty Kilty for an hour to the afterparty to make arrangements etc., whilst she stayed to finish everything off! We then got to bed at 5am and up at 8am to take everyone to the airport, she’s a wee star and took significant weight of my shoulders!

Just to address some of the other posts. First of all the officials, the majority of the officials were relatively inexperienced, and although I didn’t see the majority of the show, I don’t think their was any bad decisions. A few close ones that could have went either way, but I’m confident in the way they were scoring the fights as they do their best to use Thai criteria and its not easy for any official to judge fights on a show like this. As for Frank, I know he needs to develop and if I’m honest he does need a bit more confidence when making a decision wither someone needs an 8count or if its just a slip etc., but (and this may surprise people), I will use him again when Tony can’t do it. He has done smaller shows here for a long time and overall has done a decent job of what is a nightmare and important role in the sport. Look at the problems you see in professional referring like football, Frank does it for his love of the sport and tries his best, so give him a break, woud you do it? With exception of Tony, I always here complaints about the refereeing at shows throughout the UK. He does need more experience on the big high-pressure fights, but until he gets a chance to gain experience, he’ll never be able to develop. I wouldn’t do it. On a side note, he didn’t judge the MMA fight.

As for the MMA fight being a poor match, Nathan’s coach told me he had around 24 kickboxing fights, only had his first Pro MMA fight a few months ago, which I saw and he impressively in the first minute with ease, so didn’t seem that one sided. He had also found some footage of John and was up for it. However, John Cullen is a very talented fighter and a great lad. He had around 10 fights in Muay Thai and although better than his record would suggest, he only won about 3 of them. Since starting MMA, he’s had about 10 fights in total and only 2 of these being Pro, he lost his first ever MMA fight and been unbeaten since. So again, sounded ok on paper. But like many MMA fights I see outwith the likes of UFC etc., they often end quickly. I really didn’t intend to put any MMA fights on anyway, but John asked if I would match him to fight MMA so wanted to accommodate him.

I didn’t see much of the fights, but thought the 8to1 lived up to the hype. The tournament is all about drama and is like a little story of the event, everyone that comes to POS seems to really empathise with the fighters as they progress through the show and I hope it benefits the careers of all involved. You’ve got to give Ocana a lot of credit, he was regarded as far too small and old for this tournament and overlooked by everyone, but his heart was so impressive! The only fight I really saw entirely was Ritchie and John. This was a rematch with both lads improving significantly since last year. We had seen John in recent fights with very aggressive hand and low kick combo’s and Ritchie knew it was going to be full on from the start. But he showed a lot of maturity, especially for a 16 yrs old, and as stated earlier, he soaked up the initial pressure in the first and then turned the fight from the 2nd onwards. The change in this lad over the last year or so is brilliant and looking forward to him progressing further. The other fight I seen most of was John and Liam’s. I also thought it was close and that the 8 count in the 4th was what tipped it. Apart from that, I thought it was as expected, a very technical and nice fight. I thought Liam was kicking to the body a bit more, however, John done so with much more effect IMO, which is perhaps why the differing options, or maybe we’re all just a little bias on what was a close fight.

But best display of the night was definitely CBBT’s flossing! Still not sure why I agreed to let them do it, but hey, it was pretty funny!

Thanks again for all the support guys, everyone was asking when POS5 was gong to be. To be honest, I’m not sure of the date, was thinking around Oct / Nov, but will need to try and avoid clashing with other shows and also depends on securing the right fighters etc. To be honest, I also wanted to get away to Thailand for a little bit for some time off. My last full day off was New Years Day, so looking forward to this weekend and doing nothing! I will definitely be back to the Lagoon though, I know a lot of people thought I was wrong to move away from Braehead, but glad I took the chance on it. Think we’ve found a new home for the event just now, it looked packed, but we also have some scope to let it grow a bit, so ideal really. The lighting looked good as well, a lot different from last year, which was another gamble, but if I don’t change things it won’t improve. Anyway, I’m off to bed, also got a busy week ahead of me but I will post more towards the end of the week. Again thanks to everyone involved. As normal, if anyone has any constructive feedback for me, please get in touch.

And thirdly, anyone making the comments about me and the thai, wheter it be he took a dive??? are you fucking insane, he won fight of the year in his last fight against the boy who won fighter of the year in thailand so do you really think a face dive onto the floor for a shitty 150quid is what he would have done?? no fucking chance, plus see the lump on my arm from the kick that nearly snapped it and you'd no. And as Vin said we no who a certain person is on here talking his bollocks and no one cares, so keep it up jealous fool. Cant be arsed with it all. I had great time Gary thanks alot nut will never again do a tourny, there carp, lol. Unless prize money at least 10k then maybe,ha. Tha thai was wicked, had a great laugh with him later and such a nice guy, rungs insane i love him. Again sorry i didnt perform even half as well as i no i can but as Liawm said i was the smallest 1 there which was strange, weighed in the lightest too so gunna move down to 53-53.5 for the next one and see how it goes, someone's getting it though, lol. Everyone in the tourny where all class real nice guy's and showed good sportsmanship after each fight and the night out which is always good to see. WAs gutted for my brother from another mother Dean sexual choclate James cause if i couldnt win it defo wanted him to. Hope the ribs ok mate and see you soon

Alix James writes:

I too was disappointed with the kickboxing fight, very scrappy for fighters of 50+ fights, clearly showed the difference between Thai and KB!"

I myself was more than dissapointed with the Full Contact Kickboxing fight. I am very sorry the fight went the way it went and more then sorry that we could not show the audience what kind of fights Geoffry is used to deliver to an audience that pay a ticket. Also i am very sorry me losing my mind in the corner asking "NO HOLDING" for about 4 rounds. Also i apologise asking the ref. in between rounds why holding was allowed.

But in the end, let's forget about this "fight"? and let's talk about things that matter and that is a fantastic show. As always we where very happy to be back in Scotland and most of all to meet Gary & Claire again who are like family to me. The way they are determin to give every single person involved in their shows a great weekend is just remarcable. Coming to Scotland is always something i look forward to and Gary & Claire must be one of the main reasons why. They deserve every right to succes after now 4 brilliant POS shows and hope they will go on forever organising shows!

The tournament was great and had everything in it that people want to see in a tourny. Sebastien winning the tourny was in the end a satisfaction and reason to party after the Spittael fight and elimination of Albert Chey from the tourny. Sebastiën have won the tourny giving he's outmost and he's big hart must be the factor that made the difference to win over a real dangerous Varatz that had everything in him to win the belt. Sebastian took it and i think POS has a great champion wearing this belt. Nico Verresen, Craig Jose, Sebastiën Ocania, a great display of POS champs.. Who's next??

I tried to watch the other fights and enjoyed a lot of them. John Douglas was great to watch and i can not wait to see him fight in Europe soon. Hope to be able to have him over in october in Belgium.
Ritchie Hocking "Towerman" is getting there and showed some great stuff in there. Enjoyed the fight, 100%!!
In the urly bouts i remember Raj Singh. Enjoyed it!!

The Kilty Kilt, nice place to have an afterparty!!Enjoyed that to!!

So Gary & Claire, up to thailand now..!! Have a good rest and enjoy a well deserved holiday..,yeah right?? Gary will take a tan and will comeback full of ideas to give you all a more greater POS5 for sure!!

Thanks for a great weekend and see you soon in future!!

well done on the show, Gary. it was an honor to judge on such a high level show. there were some really close fights! i was impressed by Chey and thought he had done enough to win(by 1 round), and what a shame that Dean couldnt have continued. it could have been a completely different tourny, but thats what it is...unpredictable.

the thai def didnt take a dive, yes, his shoulder was out, from andys kick up into the armpit, but if anyone thought the highkick didnt land, think again, because i was practically underneath them at the judges table and the thai was wobbled to be fair.

was great to see everyone again, funny how i keep making my way back across the pond! you have got a great thai boxing scene over here and shows like these will keep the sport growing

excellent work from raj! really technical i thougt and looked sharp. landin a few bombs wif ure hands, some pretty solid body kicks. fought a really intellegent fight.

alan butler! "good shift"! and some set of balls to get into the ring with a weeks notice and to go in against a strong opponent like wayne fisher who i believe has had 10 plus fights. whats even more impressive is tht u took the the fight being it was only ure 2nd fight and u lasted the full 5 ! so nuffin to b dissapointed about!

I'll start by saying a big thanks to Gary and his team for having us up in bonny Scotland, it was the first time for me fighting up there and really enjoyed the whole weekend, was great to catch up with all the different lads from scotland and ireland again, as well as the shag crew and the usual suspects- ( what were we doing having a head butting competition on that punchbag machine in the nightclub after the fights?????)

I thought the show as a whole was fantastic, the lighting , the MC , the crowd and the walkway to the ring really impressed me, I'd love to fight on your next show mate.

I'm not going to complain about anything as I feel evryone knows that mistakes were made, but thats what makes us all better sportsmen , learning from those mistakes.

Was gutted for Andy H, was buzzing with his class performance against a very scarilly fast and strong thai, didn't see his next fight as I was getting ready, but I know he'll come back strong off this tourny.
Same for Dean James - had a brilliant fight against Seb, just a shame about the rib, what a warrior to carry on for another 3 rounds with his poker face, well done mate - hope you're ok.

Didn't see Liam R's fight in full just a couple of glimpses, so can't really comment, but unlucky mate, you'll be back ;-)

Thanks to the people that made the long journey to come and support us - really appreciate it.

And lastly thanks to Rab, Bobby and their team, great blokes and sportsmen, enjoyed the fight, not seen the dvd yet so can't comment properly, thought I was scoring well throughout, but got a monster bollocking for being lazy ( sorry gaffer ) Hats off to Rab, great fighter and wish him well for the future.

Just wanted to make a quick response to comments regarding the kickboxing fight. I would like to apologise to all for putting on a poor display, this was due to a cruciate injury 3 weeks prior to the fight. I thought by resting my leg it would of been ok for the fight but after landing a head kick in the 1st rnd, my knee gave out. Feeling sick with the pain, rather than throw in the towel i had to adapt to a hit and hold tactic which does not suit me at all. And anyone who has saw me fight previous will know that this is not my style of fighting. But at the end of the day a win is a win and i needed the ring time.
As for the show it was a great venue and an equally great level of thai fights.
Well done gary!

Thanks guys! I have to say that all the fighters that were on the show were great to deal with, and would have any of them back up here again!

Slowly recovering from the weekend, and already being pestered for plans for the next one! LOL. If anyone has some good pictures could they send me them for the website.

Also, I am doing the DVD this time and expecting to have the rough footage in about 2weeks then will take a couple of weeks to edit, so will keep you all posted. I'm looking forward to seeing it, sounds like I missed some good fights. Will be good to see how the fights panned out to help with future matching.

I posted a couple of other pics of the setup on the other thread if anyone is interested.

right then finally got 2minutes to write a few thank you's.

firstly i'll start by thanking gary for putting me on such a great show, it was brilliant mate, hope you are proud of yourself. i love fighting in scotland the atmosphere is great.

i wasn't very happy with my performance but going to hold my self judgement until i see the dvd and see what it was actually like. seb was really tough and made it a good fight, great to share a ring with him and would love to again some day. Spoke to him at the after party such a down to earth guy, funny that you meet most of the nicest people you could ever ask to through this sport. I felt my rib go in the 2nd round, thought i was gonna snap so just tried my best to mask the pain as i don't think he realised i was hurt so must have done a half decent job, while in my head my body crumbled lol.

Thanks to tony for all the hard work he has put into me, gutted i could continue mate but hopefully bounce back stronger.

i loved Robinson vs douglas, really classy and technical well done liam proud of you mate. see you back in the gym for my next beat down when i recover.lol infact i'm calling hoody to come down for back up when i come back!

damien trainor has been a legend in helping me get ready for the tourny, cant thank you enough mate. Hope to repay you some day, so helpful and by the looks of some of your kids on your show you have a bright career in muaythai as a coach after your fighting years.

i was gutted for Andy H, really looked like he was figuring varats out then he got cut, Never mind mate.

Thrasher looked sharp and bashful as usual, great performance mate, looked like you enjoyed yourself in there.

cheers guys! oh yeah and thanks to my good friend wainey!

vinny where were you baby, missed you mate! drunk antics just were not the same without you.

Well done Gary for another top drawer show. The new venue was great, even better atmosphere than Braehead. Well done to my fighters Raj, Alan and John for 3 superb performances. Good shift guys.

Right, on to my rant now. The referee, Frank Watkins has been getting mauled on here for making a couple of mistakes, none of which affected the outcome of any of the fights. Frank has been refereeing smaller shows for a long time and IMHO he’s earned a shot at doing the bigger shows. I think (with the benefit of hind sight) that having two referees for a show that size would have been a better idea as it’s a hell of a lot of work for one man making it a horrendously long day.

Yes Frank made some mistakes but making mistakes is a part of the learning experience, we’ve all made mistakes in the past and I’m sure we’ll all make more mistakes in the future. The difference is when we make mistakes we don’t get savaged on internet forums.
Frank would be the 1st person to admit that he’s still learning and I’m sure he’ll look at his performance through critical eyes and learn from it.

Also the comments on the kickboxing fight I thought were a bit off. I thought Lex showed the grit and determination of a champion to adapt his game plan because of his injury. I was watching the fight and remember seeing his leg give way, I thought that would have been the end of the fight but credit to the big man as he managed not only to stay in the fight but to win it as well.

On the whole I thought it was a brilliant event and I’m looking forward to watching the fights in full that I missed like Liam’s war with John, the MMA fight and the rest of the 8 man bouts.

mistakes are one thing but in one of the fights he flying elbowed one of the fighters i couldnt believe what i was seeing! i thought the boxer was gonna chin him! i think it was in the 1st fight with that guy who did the crazy monkey dance to the ring!
DaveA
Posted: 2008-05-08 07:15:22
Yep saw that as well Liam. I understand there's a learning curve involved and accept that as a ref he's up and coming, but it wasn't the last time that he did that to a fighter on the promotion.
Liam R
Posted: 2008-05-08 07:31:18
wasnt the last time? hes done it since? lol he better not ref cadden then please might cut him lol to be fair to the guy theres lots of shocking refereeing that goes unnoticed but he just got exposed on a big show where there was a fair few people who know the rules. a few bits of positive criticism would help the learning curve suggestions on lower back grabs, when to break clinch and when to count a boxer from a seasoned ref. im confident would ensure the same mistake didnt happen again. i havent seen the flying elbows but i would like to.

First post, I was the referee for the MMA fight and have to take exception to a couple of comments made regarding the stoppage.

Firstly, Nathan was dropped by a heavy knee from John Cullen and ended up in a fetal position. John dove on top of him and started landing unanswered shots to the face. As Guy Ramsay has pointed out the rules of MMA are quite clear, if a fighter is not intelligently defending himself then the referee must step in and stop the fight to help protect the fighter. Had he tried to reclaim guard, or go to turtle there would have been no stoppage. He didn't so I had to step in for his own safety. Funnily a number of experienced MMA guys have told me it was a very good stop, both ones who were thete and who have seen the footage of the event.

Second point is regarding my experience, I've either judged, kept time or refereed at various MMA, BJJ and sub grappling events in Scotland for over 2 years now. I know what I am talking about when it comes to MMA and am at a lost to explain why someone who doesn't even know me would choose that as a point to attack me with.

Oh and on a positive note, thanks to Gary O'Brien for the opportunity to officiate the bout.

Thought your stoppage was spot on mate. I was up in the Tiers, and even from there you seen the guy was going to get pounded out. Fighter's safety is paramount, and well you did him a favour. Live to fight another day as they say.

There wont be many people on the UK MMA scene at his weight/experience level that will beat John.

nzlion, I'm assuming you mean Paul Sutton. He helped arrange Varats to come for the show and has a close relationship with him as he spent a lot of time with him when in the UK last time. He basically didn't agree with the decision, I asked Paul to leave it till we were out of the ring and keep it professional. I never actually seen the fight, but the large majority of people I spoke to agreed Ocana had a great strategy in the final and won clearly. I actualy pumped into Tony Myers after the second round and he told me Sebastian was winning at the time. I'm looking forward to seeing the footage.

I've not had any constructive feedback this time, I usually have quite a few emails and like to use them to try and improve things for next time. I have my own things I need to jump on and address, but any constructive critisism would be great! Even anything else you'd like to see from it in the future etc. Thanks, Gary.

Maybe not getting any emails of critisism means it went perfect mate, I couldn't see one thing wrong with the whole show it was class, great venue, well run, great fights matched well. A show i'd love to fight on myself but i'm old and getting grey is there a senior league?

Simon, that's when I pull the dyslexic excuse out mate. Thanks for the nice comments, glad you enjoyed it! Don't know about perfect, but that's always the aim. I 'm usually running around mental & don't pick up on lots of things, so its been really helpful in the past to try and speed up the learning curve. As I said, any feedback, here or through emails etc would be brilliant.

While I'm here, was thinking of making the next one a Sat night. Also, a lot said they couldn't come because it was the Bank Hol & they were away or had other stuff on etc. Any thoughts?

Andy, I was wondering why you were so desperate for the DVD! lol.
