Mike / Nickos,

List all time funny / tragic scenes in Australia kickboxing.

Some of mine:
Dennis Alexio's shin snapping from possibly one of the weakest leg kicks i have ever seen.
Steve Pap's (friend of mine) lower leg snapping clean through due to shin splints and a well aimed kick in round one at Dallas Brooks Hall.
Tony Torcasio at the same promotion getting KKO'd and not getting up for about ten minutes (same show).
Ziad Zacharia coming into the ring looking like a human anatomy chart and then getting knocked down about a dozen times due to dehydration (he was so ripped you could see the veins in his chest - same show).

Must be many others.

I remember that Torcasio KO. Steve Vick kicked him in the head, Torcasio didn't get up for about 10 minutes, you're right!
The famous Alexio-Stan fight, the kick that did the trick was hard! Alexio's method of checking with the lower part of his shin was not too smart though. The footage of his leg collapsing under his weight when he tried to step on it is still gruesome.
Anyone remember the America's Cup show in Perth in 1987?

Hey, this was fairly recent, only 97 or so, but do you remember the all in brawl at the Nick Tetores vs Amir Shafipour fight? We'll talk about it in 10 years like we talk about the Ilhan-Tasis riot!

Didn't see that one Nickos, but the recent brawl at the boxing in Geelong was a bit exciting.
What happended at America's cup in '87 - i can vaguely recall some controversy?
What about the dancer at the caged combat event in Sydney doing her routine with one breast (i am being politically correct here) hanging out. Definetely worth the price of admission.
The Kitten Club round girls at Springvale in 2000 - boy do they enjoy their job and i definetely enjoyed the performance. Sandy would have loved it.

Classic fights Down Under
Well I realy don't know where to start or how! How about this for starters.

AUSTRALIAS BEST 5 PROMOTIONAL SHOWS EVER!
1/ Clash of the titans. Stan V Dennis 1992. Capacity 12000 Melb/ K.O 1 Stan.
2/ Fight of your life. Maurice V Stan 1991. Capacity 8000 Syd/ W12 Maurice.
3/ US Heavyweight Title. Stan V Charlie Mr C. 1989. (The Booming Start of kickboxing down under!) capacity 6500 Melb/ K.O 3 Stan.
4/ World War. Stan V Branko 1992. Capacity 8000 Melb/ W12 Stan.
5/ Revenge. Stan V Satake II 1993. Near Capacity 7000 Melb/ Draw.

It's funny how the promoter for all of them bar one was chris chronis, and it's said how he will be teaming up with Stan for a last dance together, in December!
The Maurice fight was promoted by Sum Body promotions, forget their names..Do you guy's remember them? The ring came down from the roof tops! That was original!

AUSTRALIAS BEST CLASSIC OLDIES!
1/Dana Goodson V Lee Rice 1985 (20y.o Stan as the semi main event fighting for the Aussie title against some guy, what was his name Nickos? Both Dana and Stan winning in CLASSIC fashion.
2/I don't think there was a better teams fight than the Greeks V Turks on the undercard of the Stan/Charlie Archie fight. The atmosphere was fantastic, with the Greeks winning..the late Pantali Aprikidis was awesome!
3/Tassis Petridis V The late Geral Ilhan More action outside than in!! Nothing will ever beat that brawl!
4/Ian Jacobs V Geral Ilhan Great fight, with action movie style moves thrown and LANDING!
5/Nick Tetoris V Amir Another great fight spilling out of the ring and into the crowd, with the ring collapsing!

I gotta think of some more! What do you guys have in mind!

Sumbody promotions, they did Maurice vs Stan and brought Maurice out again the follkowing year to defend his title against another American, Jeff Hollins. American vs American in Australia! Didn't work out as attendance I believe, but brave move! But their concept of the ring coming down from the ceiling, a bit crazy but fun!
Mike, Dana Goodson vs Lee Rice...I cannot remember if it was Craig Butcher or Ronnie Smith that Stan fought for the amateur Aussie title. Think it was Craig Butcher. I have photo's from this ancient show, quite a sight to see, especially interesting to see Dana in his fighting days complete with a mean afro! LOL!
Piranha, what was the story with Dave Hedgecock being shot?

Nickos,

I dont know the story behind it and wont pretend to. All i know is that he was shot in the car park of the Lower Plenty hotel about two days before his world title fight - dont know who, dont know why! He could have been one of, if not our first, official world champion! I think Paul Fyfield had beaten johnny moncayo before this however that was a non sanctioned fight hence Moncayo kept his title. No rematch eventuated.

What year was it Hedgcock fought for that title? Must have been 85 or thereabouts.

Posted: 2001-05-22 02:10:28
I think it was '84 Nickos - i will have to check. Sorry about the double post. BTW you cant be too far behind me age wise - good to see some old(er) fighters are still around.
Do you remember Ziad Zacharia's debut that night at Dallas Brooks Hall?
Mike,
I wasn't aware that Pantali had passed away - do you know when?

The tough guy fights staged in Ivanhoe by $crooge Madigan and Craig Larsen - LOL. Some abosolute classics.

Wow! do you guys have some memories of the early days of kickboxing
I wish I was able to remember some of the fights you have mentioned.
Sumbody promotions were top guys who promoted good shows
I will never forget when the ring came down from the ceiling I was judging on that night and looked around and said where is the ring? I think Benny the Jet was inside it when it came down....
The largest show in Sydney would have got to be Stan Vs Maurice Smith
at the entertainment Centre Sydney..
Alex Tui winning his Pro World Title against Kash Gill 1991 August (Ithink)
at the Homebush Staduim Promoter Marie Stratton who has now passed away.
Alex Tui Vs Hape Ngaronoa it was a draw excellent fight promoted by Marie Stratton.
Chris Cronis did a show at the Hordern Pavillon Sydney that was good
but I think Grant Barker did not show up that night.
MarkMay won World title off Gurkhan Ozkan Jez Promotions EG Whitlam Centre Liverpool Sydney West..
Alex Tui fought Darren Hedgcock in Melbourne Chris Cronis show I think
I have forgotten some of the dates.
Rick Kulu Vs Nick Talakiris would have to be the most courageous fight I have seen of the decade on Rick Kulu!s behalf I think that was on the under card of Stan The Man and Branko Cicatic.Nick Talakiris won that on pts.
Well thats all for now that I can remember...........

Lucy, that Sumbody show you're thinking of, that was Pete Cunningham vs sakad Petchyndee, the Thai fighter, in the main bout. That was a real showcase for Pete.
I've seen Alex Tui vs Kash Gill, what a war. I didn't know Alex fought Hape Ngranoa.
The Chris Chronis show at the Hordern Pavilion, Stan vs Grant Barker, is that what you were thinking of Lucy? That was a real grudge match, Barker had recently smashed Mike McDonald and was talking some serious smack afterwards. That was an awesome atmosphere that night.
Lucy, whatever happened to Mark May?
Piranha, Pantelli died in 98.
Lucy Tui
Posted: 2001-05-22 08:07:26
Mark May had to get out due to some personal stuff, have not seen him since Stan Vs Steve Jez fight in 1998....one of the best fighters I have ever managed real sad to have seen him leave the sport...
Alex Tui Vs Hape Ngaronoa definetly one of the hardest fights I had ever judged in my whole career, they were both good with there hands and feet
Hape had awesome legs he fought like Ian Jacobs...
Hape and Ian Jacobs fought and Ian bet Hape, that is when Hape got sick
and was unable to fight for awhile,it would have been a cracker if Hape wasn!t so sick..like I said Hape had awesome legs.he could kick your head off...
Dave Hedgecock and I were talking in Japan about the old fights and he mentioned Hape as a very good hard fighter and he had style and good legs and hands.......it was Hape!s illness that shorten his career I am sure he would have picked up a World Title.....
Stan Vs Steve Jez was a excellent night there was some very good fights on that night,it was ashame it did not go to air due to the guy that had taped it left the country for a year and he just gave Stan Vs Steve Jez fight,
I will try and chase that guy up and see if he still has the fights of the night....
Grant Barker had some good fight nights at the Cronulla leagues Club
he was a exciting fighter to watch..........
Rick kulu was another fighter that was good to watch from Sydney he fought some wars.........
Neilson Taione another good fighter..if he had off just listen to me he would have made it to Japan to the K1.but wanted to do it his way..had alot of talent but ended up with the wrong crowd......
Best Regards
Lucy Tui
Ps* Nickos any light on the June 16th show,Prince Amir told me he might be fighting Michael Zambidis, they are just waiting for a answer, that came from the horses mouth...well that will be interesting what do you think about that fight..??????????............

Nickos
Posted: 2001-05-22 08:27:01
I heard about what happened with Mark May, Lucy. Shame.
Not sure what's happening with Mike and if he'll fight Amir next month. Have to see what happens. Though it's not a good fight for Amir to take after so long a layoff, that's just my opinion.
Lucy Tui
Posted: 2001-05-22 09:02:01
That was exactly how I thought when he told me so I ask why he wants to fight him he said because he feels he can beat him and the money factor...so I thought well if Amir thinks he can beat him and if he can get 100% fit for the fight then good luck to him....
Best Regards Lucy Tui
Ps* I just don!t think the public would see it as a crowd pleaser.......
Amir is one hell off a tough fighter..........if he is injury free it might be the fight to see....just a thought,,not a fact...

My pick of the classic fights are:
Steve Vick vs Alex Tui (1/2)
Paul Briggs vs Sakard.
Paul Briggs vs Jomhod.
Ian Jacobs vs Jason Suttie.
Tony Hill vs any thai he fought!
Ian Jacobs vs Hape.
Scott Bannon vs JWP(because JWP won easy and made proved the critics wrong that Bannon was better.)
The best Queensland shows where the Conrad shows and the Festival Hall shows from a few years back.Always good fights and you got your moneys worth.Nuggets shows are the closest thing now to those shows.

Nickos,

Percy Lanciana - remember his fights?

One of the best value for money shows i beleive was the Dallas Brooks Hall promotion (the one where Tony Torcasio was kocked out by Steve Vick) - every fight that night was either exciting or controversial and all for the grand price of $30 bucks.

what happened in the jacobs v suttie fight?

Piranha, I feel the glory days for kickboxing in this country were the early 90's.

Posted: 2001-05-22 21:42:46
i would have to agree with you although we are doing good now, lots of exciting current and future prospects - sometimes hard to keep up with all the bloody promotions though. I tell you one thing that gives me the shits though - people booing opposing fighters as they enter the ring. Takes a lot of guts to get in there one way or the other - should show some respect even if you aren't barracking the fighter.
Nickos
Posted: 2001-05-22 21:47:37
True.
Do you remember Blitz Kickboxing promotions? They used to do some solid shows!
Piranha
Posted: 2001-05-22 21:53:21
Yeah, what happened to them? Who was behind Blitz? A few promoters seem to have dropped off the face of the earth.

Nick Telakouris was always good to watch, very courageous fighter. A shame what happened to him, i thought he had a very good career in the hands of Dana.

Scooter,
Tony Hill was excellent, what happened to him?

Jacobs vs Vick.

Great thread guys.

Did Briggs beat Sakad?

Paul
Piranha
Posted: 2001-05-22 23:25:57
Ah Paul cant remember who won Briggs - Sakard - i have a feeling it was Briggs?

Nickos,

What do you think of Vitor Belfort - excellent pair of hands. Just picked up UFC Brazil (have you seen it?) - fights a Brazilian Thai fighter (a long name - Vernabeel?) and drives him across the entire length of the Octagon with absolute bombs.
Paul
Posted: 2001-05-22 23:26:33
BTW, because I am a fan of Amir's, I hope he doesn't take that fight just yet. I would love to see it happen with Amir at 100%, though, I reckon he should get a few warm up fights first.
Lucy, wasn't Amir in need of some surgery, has he had it yet?

Paul Briggs lost to Sakad,I think he got stopped in the 4th but what a fight,at one stage Briggs had Sakad out on his feet but you know what Thai's are like they dig deep and come back twice as strong.I remember the Thai corner going ape shit that their fight might lose.
As for Tony Hill he was always awesome,I met him up here on the sunshine coast and he's a top bloke and doesn't mind a drink or 2.I think he just retired and is working.
Ian Jacobs beat Jason Suttie but what a fight both were exhausted by the end,it was under kickboxing rule,it would have been great a rematch under full Thai rules.
As for Vicks and Jacobs fighting I think they trained together.
Those shows at Conrads where awesome, then like you said about the Blitz shows they just stopped.I don't know why they where always packed.
I think thats where JWP started out fighting the Thai's.

Dawson Vs Behic a couple of years ago was a great fight
It was non stop action all the way.
Dawson Vs Amir was pretty exciting stuff.
Parr Vs Chapman was good, but the one that sticks most in my mind as action packed was
Zambidis Vs Nezif

One Aussie fighter that I have never seen fight, not even on video is Ian Jacobs. I have read lots about him, mostly on the fighttime site, which can favour the Queenslanders some times.
During the last couple of years there have been rumours several times of him making a possible comeback.
How old is Jacobs? Would age be a problem if he did return?
I have read posts that claim he was one of the best fighters ever in Australia, and his name is often mentioned when talking to people about the best fights they have seen. Is that an exageration?
I would love to see some video's.

He was a great kickboxer,I don't think he ever fought full muay thai.
I heard he wanted to but there wasn't any Thais that wanted to fight him he had an awesome reputation.Get a copy of the Ozkan vs Jacobs fight it was a great fight.

Couldn't find a Thai that wanted to fight him?? I find that very hard to believe, why not drop him off at Lumpinee? I'm sure one of the champs would of.

A Thai friend said he was ment to fight Thais afew times but always pulled out for different reasons.I was half being sarcastic when I made that comment. They always go on about how great Ian Jacobs was but he was never a proven Muay Thai fighter(talking full muay thai here.)He was a great kickboxer but as we all know there is a world of difference between MT and KB.To be regarded as as this countries best ever then I believe that he should have fought atleast 1 Thai !?
