He is a fighter, no doubt. (An unforgetable fighter).
BUT he is a kyokushin fighter. He just fought under muay thai rules sometimes.
Btw: Have you recognized the picture was taken in a karate dojo? Seen Oyama`s pic on the wall...?

Peter was a great Kyokushin fighter, and I will never forget his fight against Hiroko Kurosawa at the 4th Kyokushin World Open Tournament in 1987. What a fight, one of the best in the history of Kyokushin!

peter must stop fighting,because he had an injury on his ankle,two months ago he's operated and everything is o.k now !! he have his own sportschool in schiedam / holland called ,,hurricane gym,,.
good to hear he is still in the game,he was a hell ofa fighter in his day.Paul Briggs even took the "Hurricane" tag from him after meeting him in Thailand as a kid.

Is this Peter Smith's own karate belt on the picture above, where he stands together with Benny "the jet" Urquidez? As far as I know, Peter Smith was a sempai 2 Dan in Kyokushin, and not a 4 Dan sensei.
On the belt there is 4 Dan, was Peter really a sensei? (The belt also looks like it is far to long, maybe it is Michael Wedels belt?)

i think that the belt is from peter his trainer and coach sensei jan vleesenbeek,because peter was in japan for his kickboxingfight with andre mannaart and these pictures are from the day after the fight.

Great karate picture of Peter Smith in action! (It is the 4th World Open). Peter Smith had one of the best fights at the 4th World Open Tournament against Hiroki Kurosawa, who today fights in the K-1.
Peter was an amazing Kyokushin fighter, I highly respect him as great fighter!!

This is cool, I had heard alot about Peter but never knew what he looked liked, plus I never knew he did so much. By the sounds of it he was a legend. Glade you have so many pictures of him. would love to see more if you have any.

well,i have a lot of pictures of peter,we grow up in the same neigherhood here in dordrecht and i was following him through his career.i'm a good friend of him and he was a great fighter: european champion kyokushinkai lightheavyweight and european champion w.k.a kickboxing lightheavyweight and worldchampion w.k.a lightheavyweight and worldchampion muay thai.

well,i will do and i give peter a big ,,osu,, from my dear friend oliver from denmark.this is peter smit on the cover of an old dutch fightersmagazine,that was a picture of 7 september 1986 in weert/holland. this picture is of the final open dutch kyokushin championship between peter and rob v/d velden. the winner was peter,of course !!!!!!

It was one hell of a great Dutch Kyokushin team back in 1987. Michel Wedel as the European champion, strongest fighter and biggest star, the two Gordeau brothers, Constancia who also won the Danish Open Tournament, and then Peter Smith.
To me, the 4th World Open Tournament back in 1987 still stands as the absolute best Kyokushin tournament ever. With fighters like Matsui, Andy Hug, Ademir da Costa, Michael Thompsen, Masuda, Kurosawa, Wedel, Kenji Midori etc... It was simply the World Open tournament.

peter smit was an excellent fighter,a fighter with a very great fighting spirit,he's a friend of my for more then 36 years and we grow up here in the same neigherhood.he's very strong and he's operated a few months ago on his injury on his ankle,so maybe he can make a comeback.if he try i will help him the best i can and i can tell you,if he fight again,i'm there where ever he fight on this planet.

The picture of a very young Peter getting a medal of Shihan Jon Bluming is great, and new to me!! I have never seen a picture of Peter Smith as a blue belt (8 or 7 kyu) Kyokushin karate-ka. How old is Peter on that picture. I guess that it is from the early 80's ... 1980 or 1982???

here a personal thing of him of that european championship.
1987 was a great year for Peter!
First he became Kyokushin european champion, and the he had the best fight at the 4th World Open Tournament against Hiroki Kurosawa. The fight between Peter Vs Kurosawa is for Kyokushin, what the fight between Muhamed Ali Vs Geroge Forman is for boxing.

the fight between peter smit and costa padoulitius was a fight under the rules of the w.k.a,it was a 7 x 2 minutes fight and the winner in that great fight was peter smit on points.

I'm sorry to hear of Leo passing away.He was a great fighter.
I heard alot about him when i first started fighting and his and Ramon Dekkers name along with Peter Aerts were the bigest names around at the time.He fought everyone including Kaman,wow I seen 1 fight of him and he just went crazy at this thai and KOD the thai.I saw it in 1993 Nathan Briggs had the tape.Glad you showed the pics,Thanks awesome.Another Dutch legend.
