Weight training was actually something I neglected when I was fighting, instead choosing to focus the sport specific training of pad work and sparring.

I think if it's used correctly it can really benefit a fighter. There are so many different ways to train your body these days that your bound to find something to suit your body type. I wish I hadn't neglected weights when I was fighting as it's the only training I really do now and I feel fitter, stronger and faster.

Sandy,
This subject depends on Blood type, ethnicity, body type and culture.
Some people can gain Muscle mass fast, while others struggle and some people can lose weight fast, while others struggle.
It also depends on the local diet. Just eat salad.

The term "weight training" is far to generic.
Strength & power training is probably a better term to use when talking about combat athletes. Unless they intend to move up in weight class you would generally steer clear of training types that main outcome is muscle gain.
In reality if you train for a strength & power outcome and get your eating pretty good you will lose some body fat and gain some muscle as a bi-product of this.

The option on the right is far more tasty and enjoyable, I do however now have to iron my shirts with a wok :(

Anybody tried the 5x5 strength training program for a fight? Or anyone have an opinion on it?

http://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5-beginner-strength-training-program/

Its jus big compund movements, no isolation, and the goal is to keep trying to lift more weight, 5 sets of 5 reps.
Would it help a fighter doing this twice a week or so? Surely it would help with power?

Weight training is far to loose a term to use, there are so many different ways to use weights and resistance equipment. You would be hard pressed to find a top class athealete in any sport that does no do some kind of weight based strength training.

I've used weight in four of my fives sessions so far and each one has been a different type of training.

This morning I did a new circuit, take five kettle bell strength exercises (a to e) and five body weight aerobic exercises (f to j, for example mountain climbers, burpee, squat jumps etc.

you do 40 secs of f, 10 sec rest 40 secs of a 10 secs rest then repeat twice more making a five minute round. You do the same with g and b etc until you have done five five minute rounds. Its disgusting, its aerobic and it uses weights.... so what is it?

Aerobic exercises using weights burn more calories after you have finished training then any other kind of training.
