Just you and me Sandy, the only milk drinkers out there! I can't even put vinegar on my chips without feeling tipsy!
Zero alcohol for me buddy, totally tea total. In fact I don't even drink Tea or coffee (except green tea) so I guess I am milk total! :-)

I gave up the demon drink 2 years ago, best thing I ever did. I wish I could persuade more young Thai Boxers to keep off the drink. It saddens me that young people can't go out and not drink.
I have so many people in my gym who are completely ruining their talent because they prefer going on the drink v training, especially on the weekend.
Its all about personal choice of course but there is more to life than alcohol. I know lots of people who follow a clean diet and train hard through the week and ruin it all on a weekend drinking and smoking. I am lucky enough to have a personal trainer working in my gym, he is teetotal and makes Sandy look chubby!! He is an inspirational figure to a lot of the young lads who want to achieve a physique like him. He drinks cold green tea while he is training instead of plain water and coconut milk following training instead of whey protein. He has been a big influence in education for the younger ones re nutrition etc. and has managed to steer people away from the red bull and onto more natural electrolyte drinks etc.

plenty of lads here in Phuket fighting in Bangla Stadium and Patong Stadium that have the talent to do more, but get smashed three nights a week and fuck morning training off, miss days etc... guys with less athletic/MT talent smash two sessions a day, privates, do hill runs, chill and maybe get stoned at the weekends, and do just as well or better

yet plenty of Thais here drink most days and smoke yabba and they're still quality fighters. That's more due to doing it all their lives though, they can afford to smash themselves to pieces more and still be class fighters for 3-5 rounds.

I drink every day though, hardly train and haven't fought in a stadium yet so fuck what I say ;)

Boozing is fine in moderation, most top athletes will enjoy a drink between bouts of training/activity.

Drinking is fun, there's no doubt about it.

I have not been drunk in 20 years but I do very very occasionally enjoy the odd magners here and there. I don't think drinking is the problem I think it's knowing when to stop drinking......

Wasted too much of my youth in bars when I should of been in a gym. I enjoy the occasional drink but no longer get drunk in public. If I'm going to have a beer at fight events I won't do so until after my fighters have fought. Don't want to be cornering them smelling of drink or having my dicision making/emotions effected by it. I have a blanket ban on fighters drinking after their fights, need to wait 24hours and reasess their injuries before they do. Studies have shown that having just 3 standard drinks of alcohol after physical training, exercise or competition delays recovery by up to 60hours. Do serious sportspeople need this?

live and let live! we train hard but enjoy ourselves too! if people are fighting they dont touch alcohol for 8 weeks pre-fight, but any other time they can do what they like and we would never presume to tell them any different or tell them how they are allowed to spend their time! during fight training they know whats required, but thats as far as it goes! when people are fighting 3, 4 or more times a year with a good 7-8 weeks training before hand (sometimes more) thats a pretty big chunk out of each year spent pushing their bodies to the limit.

being a fighter f**ks with fighters lives! it can ruin relationships and put huge stress on friendships etc. not everyone wants to have a relationship with someone who literally has to give up their life for 2 months at a time, who cant go out for food or go out for a drink on a whim, who is moody as hell whilst dieting and inadvertantly taking it out on everyone around them!

so yeah, they should be able to live their lives a little bit in between and for some that will be getting drunk with their pals/partners, for some it might be different things!

I used to drink but i have stopped. One night i dropped a my car on a cat and it died.
You can never fully be in control of yourself when you are drunk.if you want to perform at the best level you should not drink. it damages your body over time and will effect your later performances.

i have been t-total for 9 years this november and being 51 its the greatest thing i have ever done.
when i boxed 20 odd years ago i drank and can honestly say it hindered me.
i think its what level you want to take yourself to as a fighter there was a open class fighter at our club who never drunk and and had a terrific fight record.
i remember ricky hatton having a bottle of budweiser after he beat carl wall at everton park sports hall in his only senior year as a amateur and i remember him saying that he 1 bottle after every bout and 1 bottle only . but alcohol is a dangerous drug so if i myself had the chance again i would never would have drunk in the first place and maybe i might of had a better amateur career pax

I woudl imagine the majority of the of the worlds top athletes across all sports will enjoy the odd drink.

The only reason for abstinence is if you don't know when to stop.

A light hearted quote from the author jamnes Crumley that made me laugh:

""Son, never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers""

It's all a question of choice of course and, more importantly, responsibility.

I can see the pleasure people have in a cool refreshing pint of Cider, lager etc on a hot day. However, I can't see the pleasure they have in throwing up, wetting their pants and falling over y drink to excess.

I got drunk at 15 and was soooooooo ill, I puked up into my paper-bag on my Sunday paper round the day after!

I was also influenced by Bruce Lee's line in Enter the Dragon when Braithwaite asked him 'Drink?' 'No thanks' came his reply.

So I decided not to drink, bear in mind I was in the RAF for nearly 14 years so peer pressure was high too!

I was told by a wise old lady once ' If you smoke or drink then you know the potential dangers of your actions and therefore should be prepared to accept any consequences that may result from this'

Right, I'm off for a pomegranate juice ;-)

I do self defence courses and classes on occasions and my usual opening intro is that if they want to save time and money I can give them a 3 step self defence plan that will see their chances of being victim to violence cut by 80-90% so won't need to do the rest of the course and can go home and live in relative safety. They are:
1, don't drink alcohol. ( you hughly increase your chances of either becoming a victim or perpetrator of aggression & violence)
2, don't go to places where other people are drinking alcohol ( increase your chance of becoming victim of a some drunken & cowardly idiots violence)
3, don't spend time in the company of someone who has been drinking alcohol in the last four days. (hung over people are moody and easially aroused to aggression. 2-3 days later the alcohol induced depression sets in and everything that goes wrong will somehow be your fault and potenally lead to aggressive outbursts or violence directed at you)
Not practical for everyone but is a good warning of the typical behavioues and reactions of using alcohol.
And I am yet to meet someone who can drink themselves smarter!

Hell I enjoy the effects of alcohol as much as anyone, in fact so much so it easially becomes too much and for years I didn't recognise the harm I was doing. The simple fact is that no one ever has a drinking problem, it's just thoes who have to live and opperate around them that have the problems. Problems of putting up with mood swings, depression, aggression, violence. Problems of seeing their kids dissapointed because dad/mum forget their bithday again, missed seeing them compete in sports again, missed seeing them growing up because they were too busy with their drinking or getting over their drinking. Yep plenty of people can drink with restraint, most of the time, but everyone who has drunk has at least one story where their drinking led to unpleasent, unsocial, risk taking, embarrassing, dangerious or damaging behaviour. I hate seeing fighters drinking straight after their fight & ban mine from doing so. Ever fighter takes hits to the head. Any the damage is hidden and needs time to be assessed and the brain needs to recouperate before inflicting the effect of alcohol onto it. Yep, keeping off it in the 6 weeks lead up to a fight is good but then leave it for a another 24 hours before drinking again after your fight.

andyc nice quote and very true. drinking is the drug that causes the violence. I probably wouldnt care if it was banned but also why are people so judgmental. if you don't like it fine but to hate something you know so little about is very narrow minded. if it wasn't for booze and date rape concoction you would probably be a virgin. when you take a lady out I bet you don' miInd her gettin black out drunk so you can slam her!
