Just seen JWP is quite a good performance against Jordan Tai.
Quite an interesting concept - i know it's been done before by promoters, but to have a big name like JWP endorsing/promoting it is quite interesting.
It is an interesting concept. 4oz gloves obviously changes the dynamics of the striking, making the hands much more dangerous.
I often feel, that when watching "Modified Muaythai for MMA" ( what some often refer to as Cage-kickboxing instead of Thai-Kickboxing ) with level changing between a higher and a lower base stance and the takedown defence etc.... that you are watching what closely resembles the Muay-Boran styles.
Its a shame that the unified rules that are widely used in M.M.A. do not allow the downward elbow from 12 to 6 O'clock, as it would be great to see more jump-downward elbows along with all the flying knee's that we see in the Octogon, ( it would be even more Muay-Boran style then).
Maybe "Caged-Muaythai" will take off. World-Combat-League, in a circled area rather than a ring, seems to be on U.K. sat television quite a lot, ( not a fan though ).
Doh! Wonder why I put 7oz gloves. Clearly meant 4oz.
Agree that the gloves do change the dynamics. Jwp looked sharp in this. Would like to see more of the higher level fighters taking part as opposed to the mediocre, unclassified (pro or am??) Bouts that take place in a lot of parts of the UK.
Neil,
I think they're trying to find synergy between Muay Thai and MMA. I'm sure it's legal and a good way to work around the current ban on MMA in Thailand. More than likely, events like this will encourage a ressurection in Muay Boran/ Muay Kaad Cherk.
If it aint in Thailand should it be a problem? It's still thaiboxing - same rules etc with exception of padding and arena.
Also, isn't DARE fighting still going ahead in Thai?
Awesome and have been respecting and liking JWP for years a true advocate for Muay Thai Inside and outside a true consum, ate professional and gentleman !!!
And re: the Cage etc: Its a interesting concept too
just a few Quick Q's ? :-p
1. how do you "jump the top rope"/cage entrance?
2. how do you seal the Ring / cage? 8 bows? / corners
3. wheres the neutral corner(S) in a knockdown?
Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place! On his fb he's saying that he has been coping some flack from senior Muay Thai die hards teling him that he can't use the words "Muay" or "Thai" in nameing his new concept/venture because it is not traditional Muay Thai. So he started looking for a new name. Then on the other side he now has his wife telling him to stick to his guns and name it whatever he wants to. Hell, I'm with Angie, you call it whatever you bloody well want to JWP!
Sandy. Apparently he found doing his the Wai Khru a little odd in having to work the extra and odd shaped floor area. Can you just imagine the damage if you misjudged your reach when throwing your best roundhouse and catch your little toe on the cage? I'd strap my fighters toes with sports tape for protection but may need to develop some new way to do this so it holds on.
He should stick to his guns! ( Just like John Wayne ).
There are plenty of people who have modified their Muaythai knowledge, either for M.M.A. , for K-1 Kickboxing, to coach just purely for fitness, or to coach modern self-defence combatives.
It does not mean that they have turned their back on Muaythai, if anything it is a credit to the method that it can be succesfull under so many varied applications.
People who critic this, or anyone also using modified methods are the real fools, especially if those being knocked are succesfull.
JWP has always been, and will always be seen as a great asset to the sport.
Forget the FB haters, if they dont like it - then it is their problem to deal with, and they should just avoid it.
JWP is helping to 'promote' Muay Thai by what he is doing. These so called senior Muay Thai need to see that he is keeping to the original rules but opening it up to a new audience -the cage fans!
I totally understand why certain people favour traditional methods but don't knock people that are investing time, money and effort is promoting the sport, even with a twist.
JWP should stick to his guns and carry on. There's too many haters in all aspects of martial arts, it's pathetic.
interesting point ref neutral corners for knockdown, as in mma there is no such thing as a count for a downed opponent right? if he goes down thats it the ref will jump in if he's out ...so what will be the rules in cage mt? obviously different kinds of knockdowns in mt ...
Already plenty of Muay Thai in a cage shows to date, and Lethwei rules in Burma which many farangs do is the far more ancient form where you see Muay Thai stylists with no padding.
JWP hasn't really done anything new or controversial here. He's just combined several elements and stamped his name on it for a complete marketing package. Fair play to him.
I'm not a huge fan of watching Thai stylists concede to this rule structure, but I'll definitely tune in to watch Pornsarneh in 4oz gloves.
Agreed Tom. I think it's more part that JWP is such a well known name and he is behind it. We know a lot of smaller promoters do it (won't name a few UK ones but their standards leave a lot to be desired), but it's good to see a major name experimenting.
seems more he is coping opposition not so much for doing it but for calling it "Muay Thai" and by people who apparently believe Muay Thai should only be fought in a square, roped, ring. JWP's is a round cage so you could say that he has the only "true" ring. It sounds like it is more advise and views he has had from people he acknowledges and respects rather than fb haters having a go at him. fb fans are all behind him on it. IMO just because somethings develop and become slightly different don't mean everything has to be changed, renamed or that its not true to its roots. Sandy, about sealing off the ring, well if people are serious about their superstitions then they just seal off the octogon, simple & no issue. The intent and belief behind it is more important than the number of corners you stop at. If you can walk in through a door then you don't need to go over the top. Going over rather than through the ropes is just to keep the head above the feet so walking in through a door will not be an issue to the superstitious.
As I understand the rules are still FTR except for the glove weight and it is just a matter of padding two opposing posts with white pads for netural corners.
Surely it's still muay Thai regardless of a ring or cage or size of gloves?
I've no idea about the actual traditions of the wai kru?/ram muay (forgive me if that's incorrect) but as far as the sport itself goes then it seems like it is still FTR. I mean football is still football if played on a pitch or back lane, boxing's still boxing whether in a ring or doing Bare knuckle, surely.
You could say JWP is taking Muay -thai back to its Roots!!(way after it had moved on from the battlefields)
A 'Ring' was eastablished by a circle withen a crowd not what we regard as a 'Ring' today- ropes with four corner postes in a square shaped?
Also with the 10 oz/ 8 oz gloves added for safety as so many deaths in the ring between 1920-30 where it was banned in Thailand.
I was ring side for this show and as a spectator was great to watch! alot faster pace ,bit more brutal but it ws Muay-thai Raw!
Best of luck to him sure it will take off and i personally cant waite til the next one !!
i like the idea, you would have to be 10+ fights c b a class before fighting this rule set surely. imagine tim thomas at these rules he would be deadly
G'day rob Mitchell am guessing your based in Auz as well. Missed the show myself due to illness but have heard it was a cracking show!!! How do you think thompson would get on against l Harrison? Would be interesting match up in the ring or cage. Would love to see fave uk fighters coming over for a good blue. How did your lad get on? Jwp seems onto a win with this fad every fighter in auzzy wants a bash at cmt.
Hi Mate, yea living on Gold Coast and working at Prophecy Gym.
Would be a great match up between Thompson and Harrison,Both aggresive fighters that dont take a step back.
Thompson won first round and 2nd round put Pornsaneh down twice but he came back in the third.
It was a re-match for my lad, my lad beat his oppononent 5 weeks ago on another JWP show was main event but lost on split decision this tme,in the ring my lad got him the corners and smashed him however what was interesting with the circular cage was no corners and his opponent used it well hit and run tactics just cirlced, learnin curve for us! but was great mate! was honored to be there and part of it!
hey rob im just up the road in briz vegas. Thompson harrison would be a great match up could think of a feew others regurding oz/uk fighters. have been over in au for 2 years seen some awsome shows domination and epic over in wa and total carnage and evo in qld. really enjoy the fights shown on fox sport. hard line s for the laddo but as long as he can take something away from it, its all good.
All good mate! he was happy enough! Tomahawk e.mailed him and said he thought my lad won and it was up on a few blog's that he got robbed but its the way it goes,we just happy to be there to be honest,it happens in every fighters career!
The owner of the our gym Propechy is putting big show on at Beenleigh Dec 1st come down for it Adam.
Are you training up there in Brizzy, if so where mate?
In all honesty I've never regularly trained for about 2 years since I left Perth. Was at riddlers gym found it to be great place to train. Have been to corporate boxing just round the corner from where I live but with no classes to speak of and no training buddy motivation is at a low. Find the humidity real draining as well but that's no excuse. Would be up for a show 1st dec what's the promo called and I will keep a eye open for it.
Got some great gym's up there Nuggets being prob on of the best,
The promotion is called 'Eruption' got some great match ups on there with main event Aus vs Thailand.
And to answer Sandys questions as never really thought about it before last sat as we we're the same? where's 'our' corner? where's the 'neutral' corner? and no the fighters never sealed of the 'Ring' as cage too high! we we're pointed to where our corner was and was told ref would order fighter to opposite side of where fighter fell for 'neutral corner.
I just heard that the concept is under scrutiny after one of JWP's top fighters 'Flip' street has had to retire due to injurys occurred whilst fighting on CMT .
Its brought up that whilst UFC use 4oz gloves they dont contact as much to the head because they also have ground work etc?
Where these bouts are 3x3s and 90% of strikes are directed to the head?
