Whats your thoughts on them Fighting?
Whats happened to Minimum age to fight head contact ?
Used to be 17
then last year it was pushed by some orgs: to 18
and now most of us are having 13 ? 14 15 16 17 YEARS doing Head contact
Right?
or
Wrong?

I would say right, as long as it wasn't compulsory and would have to be agreed by both camps, as a junior I always wanted to fight head contact and found junior rules very restrictive. Although I can see the other side of the coin to the argument, especially if someone really young was to get hurt, but i couldn't see a problem with say 13+ optional head contact in fights or something like that

Ukmf rules for 11+ elite kids is boxing only to the head, and from 16+ is C class with head guard and shinnies
I think some youngsters are better than others and keeping them from progressing is unfair on them. But also some instructors need to realise when a kid is not ready for head contact

Good question Sandy, I would say Keith has to be one of the best people to answer this with the amount of top class kids coming from his gym. The hardest training lad in my gym is 14 and has his 1st fight in 2 weeks under UKMF junior rules (no head contact). If we want them to learn Thai scoring as it is implemented at the moment as per Tony Myers judging courses etc then no head contact and training them accordingly is good for developing the Thai style scoring (focusing on kicks to the body, knees and good dominant clinch). I grew up as a kid in the sport and trained and sparred full head contact, unfortunately this didnt prepare me for junior competition with no head contact so I was easily outscored by fast body kickers when I had been focusing too much on boxing, head kicks and low kicks.
I actually like no head contact for novice kids but once they progress to elite kids level like TJ Everett from Keith's gym they will be seriously held back by not fighting head contact. Its down to the instructor/coach to be responsible and look after the kids safety but also not hinder their progression if they are ready!

i think its right but in some cases can be wrong its down to the fighter really some can be disheartened by it at a young age etc But..
id say its right if both fighters/coaches fully agree on it! its a good way to progress instead of it just becoming a shock when there adults and they get smacked in the face Ha Ha!

That boxing to the head only at 11 years is crazy imho, encourage the kick and clinch more not boxing to the head:)

2 sides of the coin mr Robinson and .......

People Tax discs run out every 6 months or 12 if you pay for the year

point is New Blood and Teanagers turn into a teanager every day and new Blood into our sport

do we Protect and Nurture them?
Or expose and ruin them?

this line Liam, thin line !

18+ having fights with protection is ridiculous imo, 16years old should have a choice whether they want to fight pro rules or amateur

yes Colin BUT moreso on Trainer and Parents

heres a question for you?
and ive got to say this
i personally agree that teanagers should fight
and be allowed head contact etc:
"BUT" i also think there should be some Guidelines and restrictions

If there was a Vote on it with a Government Association / Rule / law
Then id propose this
13-15 always shin pads and 12oz & 14oz gloves ( like we do 8 and 10 with ADULTS )
16 + 17 shin pads and 10oz & 12oz gloves ( like we do with Adults )
And the weight catagory with gloves with Adults is up to 69.9kilos
is 8.oz and 70kgs Up is 10oz.
so with teanagers id propose
13-15 up to 59.9 12oz 60kgs up 14oz
16-17 up to 64.9kgs 10oz 65kgs up 12oz

I think 13-15 is alright wearing shin pads, 14oz gloves is a bit too much may aswell spar and 16+17 I think should have choice to fight without shinpads I think 18 is a bit to strict just my opinion.

when are kids classed as adults (serious question btw) is it 16 or 18...i mean in life here not in thai boxing!! surely until they are 'officially' an adult then its entirely up to the parents if the kids fight at all let alone whether its am/pro etc?

Legally a person is an adult if 18, that's the age required to be able to give medical consent, enter into a legally binding contract etc.
