Topic:Www.thaifighter.co.uk Fighter Of The Year 2014!

Posted: 2014-08-31 12:37:14

At the start of 2014 we approached a number of the UK`S most respected Officials, Commentators and Coaches with the intention of recognising both Male and Female "Fighter of the Year" awards. Judged along the same lines as the "Sports writers award" in Thailand the aim is to acknowledge each year, the outstanding athletes currently competing on the UK fight scene

Results will be taken from January to December with the criteria simple, all boxers based in the UK can qualify, there is no set amount of fights nor does winning all neccaserily guarentee being short listed, same can be said for a loss. Its simply down to quality of opposition

On the first drafft (March) we had 21 males and 11 females listed, this is a short list based on the year so far, activity both past and future has been taken into account but boxers can be added or taken off. It is merely a starting point. Some fighters have had a slow start, some have big fights lined up, its more a reflection of the information submitted by you, the coaches and fighters on the scene rather than a final draft.

Please feel free to nominate fighters, or suggest who you think deserves a mention. The final short list of eight fighters (5 male & 3 female) will be voted on by a number of respected people within the sport, the two males with the least (one female) votes will be cut then a vote on the finalists will determine who is the Thai Fighter "Fighter of the Year 2014"

Nicola Kaye from Bad Co deserve's a mention for the female of the year as well i reckon. Unbeaten fighter and has beat Leonie Hardman amongst others, This year won the ISKA British title in a dominating performance and then went on to face and beat Sofia Christolodou to take the UK NO:2 spot.

hard to believe greg wooton is not at the top of this list, his fight with pakorn and his win against phetboonchu are head and shoulders above any other uk fighters achievements this year..... very strange
weazeldeazel
Posted: 2014-12-11 10:44:09
@Peetee, its a tough one as Greg has fought 3 times this year. 1st round KO loss, Loss on points and a win. YES he lost to Pakorn but he lost, he got Stopped in a round and obviously a great win in Scotland but its "fighter of the year". If it was "FIGHT of the year" it might be different.
Raymond Bennett
Posted: 2014-12-11 11:44:42
so what are the criteria? just number of wins? number of fights without loss? irrespective of the level of the opponents you fought?
Raymond Bennett
Posted: 2014-12-11 11:50:00
from the opening post:

"Its simply down to quality of opposition. "

I think 5 rounds with a current Lumpini champion, Pakorn, and a win against the current Thailand fighter of the year - Petchboonchu pretty much qualifies as the best opposition anyone in the UK has fought this year.

Raymond, it's a tough one obviously and you do have a point however I'd say merely getting in the ring with a fighter is not enough on it's own. The bout should be competive, depending on your point of view many people commented that fight with Pakorn was not (that's not my personal opinion but it is a fact). He did also get stopped in a round. So there is also an argument that a very good win does not constitute "fighter of the year" although it may well qualify as performance of the year/fight of the year however these are awards that we are unfortunay not looking at

I dont think greg is too bothered about being nominated but i do believe he should be, if he was to fight 5 national level fighters and stopped them all he probably would be but A win against petchboonchu is arguably THE biggest win anyone on these shores has ever had. Not a criticism your doing a tough job and doing great, trial and error for the future i guess.

Posted: 2014-12-11 23:02:10
totaly agree with tino, , can understandyourpoint weazeldeazel but i think one fight and especialy a win over one of modern times best nak muay entitle him to be fighter of the year, and if we are going on wins and quality of opponent then panicos yousuf should win based on this criteria
weazeldeazel
Posted: 2014-12-12 06:58:12
That's the beauty of it Peetee, we all appreciate different things and judge it on our own criteria, that's why I have 14 of the industry's leading figures all voting on the winner. Takes away any bias as all cast 3 votes for both male & female so hopefully we will have a worthy winner.

The finalists I believe are all very justified and it was tough to get it down to 5. We could all debate the merits of those not shortlisted but as this is the first time we have done this Id like to think the UK Thai community will continue to get behind this as they already have, recognition amongst ones piers is surely the highest accolade

"we approached a number of the UK`S most respected Officials, Commentators and promoters"

Due to the nature of AX and it's tendency to give people with no virtual identity a free pass to stir and generally abuse I'd rather not say exactly who, however, the obvious ones are myself (UK rankings), Dave Croft (Thaifighter.co.uk) and as he outed himself on FB Phil Sheddon (Main Event). The rest as I said are well respected in their perticular areas and are all heavily involved in pushing UK Muay Thai.

This has been awarded by the thaifighter team, we considered a number of factors which included but not exclusive to: number of fighters in the rankings, level they are regularly competing and winning consistently on home and away shows.
