Many memories from the very early 80’s having attended various shows mainly at
London’s Pickets Lock (promoted by George Sfetas), Brighton in the Centre
(promoted by the Sama gym), Ipswich (Mick Blackwell) and Newton Aycliffe (Barry
Norman), plus others. The PKA days.
Have to agree with some of the earlier comments, many unsung hero’s during that era. In no particular order:
Arthur O’Loughlin, Howard Chager, Segy Robles, Pat O’keefe, Gary Staff, Phil Shields, Charles White, Rudy Van Damme, Chris Kent, Sylvester Lewis, Terry Roomes, Steve Tabener, Alan Bradley, Lloyd Cobin, Chris McNeish, John Cooney, and fellow axer Paul Pearson.
So many quality matches back then, the main clash I recall was between Chager and Robles at Bantam. I think Chager was signed up by Micky Duff.
One lad we had from out gym Chris Chappell could kick like a mule. Was warming up kicking pads in the corridor pre fight at Pickets Lock and his opponent looking down our way. Can recall having been smug, like this is what you’re facing, only for Chris to be out kicked and beaten by Vince Jauncey.
Referee’s I recall were mainly Mick Blackwell and Bob Hunter, and Hee Il Cho was the main demo man entertaining during intervals.
I have some old Combat mags that includes several write ups and coloured pics, so if ya think they may assist with the book Linda then let me know, though I hear Paul Pearson has possibly the best library of Martial Arts mags ever.
