A number of the things some people seem to find confusing are actually not peculiar to Muay Thai. This particular rule (as are a number of others) is the same as international boxing. While some boxing bodies use the term TCO rather than TKO the same rule applies if the referee feels a fighter is in need of medical attention before they have reached the count of 10 it is not recorded as a KO. For example the BBBC have this rule but call it a TCO.

"BBBC rule 3.33.3

A Referee shall have the power to interrupt the count where he considers that a fallen Boxer is in need of urgent medical attention and in such cases the opponent shall be declared the winner by a technical count out (T.C.O.)"


KO would be possibly better described as count out (CO) rather than knock out (KO) as although it may sometimes involve unconsiousness it isn't directly related to it and can be the result of a number of other causes where a fighter can't beat the 10 count.
