i was part of the security team last night and had to address Alan Weavers support on several occasions throughout the night, (blocking fire exits/routes to the bar etc) as this was not my event i did not want to appear heavy handed and asked them on each occasion politely to move , they were not the easiest crowd to deal and were clearly becoming more "boisterous" as the evening progressed.
When Alan's fight started the surged forward, when Alan went down they went "Tonto" and a drink was thrown into the ring, the guy who threw the during was immediately removed. and the security team made a cordon round the rest of the support, some left and the rest calmed down (a bit).
there was another altercation with them outside although I'm not sure if they were fighting with each other or anyone else.
One thing that made matters worse was that Alan Weavers corner team were standing on the edge of the ring actively egging their supporters on while the security was trying to calm them down, this was done to such a degree that I told one of the corner men he would be removed from the building if he didnt settle down.
Speaking for myself as a promoter and this can be taken any way you want, any time i go to a show i watch fighters, i look for good fighters with good support and activity target them when i am promoting. when promoting a show i take into cognizance all areas of the promotion and take very seriously the safety of my audience, i will not compromise their safety by promoting gyms/fighters who are unable to control themselves, and as i say i can only speak for myself but i know for a fact that the incident last night was witnessed by 6 Scottish promoters. not a good advert when you want to promote your fighters from a gym who are now developing a reputation for this type of behaviour.
one other thing happened last night that absolutely disgusted me one of the kids fights was brought to an end prematurely and a child was in the ring injured, some adults from his opponents club were screaming "Easy Easy" I'm sorry but these are the type of people channel 4 actively sought out a shows during baby fight club, and are in my opinion vile!!
on a more positive note , the show as a whole was run well and the fights in general well matched, Kieth Middleton stood out for me he put in a really good solid performance and was great to watch him, Reggi Agu and Colin Anderson was a nice fight and the main event was superb ( if unfortunately one sided). Didn't recognise John Douglass fighting he just didnt seem his normal self although his Irish opponent was a bear, as solid as a tree trunk.
well done to OB1 he did his best to put on a quality show at credit crunch ticket prices and was let down by some clowns, and despite many of the negative comments remember guys these incidents were over with in a relatively short period of time, and should not distract from an otherwise great show.
