My understanding was that the padding over the instep under the ankle support was there to protect against injury. I saw it being used a lot with certain gyms and fighters, and when I questioned it I was told that they allow it in Thailand.
As I have done more research, I have found that it does increase the hardness of the effect of the kick. Also, the fighter is more confident in throwing a kick with a bad leg if they have them in.
Im not sure of the official ruling on them (and I will find out soon)but I dont allow them if Im reffing as do feel that it is giving an unfair advantage. With this fight, as I have previously stated, I missed them when I checked Artem before the fight (normally they are very obvious to see)but when I spotted one of them, I ripped it out there and then as everyone can see. Then between the round, I checked his other leg, and he had one there too so I removed that.

Agree, more needs to be asked about the Swedish judges scorecard??? Was way off!

Watching that fight reminded me though just what a fantastic performance Steve gave.
