Can anyone explain why a Hindu god is popular in a buhddist country? Or is he revered in both religions? A relative of mine used to travel to India regularly and would bring back comic books that told the lives of all the Hindu gods, "Archie" style. Hanuman and Ganesh were some bad mofo's.

nah,
thailand, indonesia, cambodia, burma and laos all practiced hinduism before buddhism came.the wai-khru is hindu not buddhist.so these countries even though their so-called buddhist, all heavily influenced by hinduism and magic.that pic is cool.....

As buddhism coexsits with shinto in Japan pretty much the same happened before in the continental Asia. Buddhism at the beggining was totally denying to be a religion rather than a way of life, and was also extensively tolerant with local religious practices in the countries where missionary monks arrived. Hinduism as nowadays was innitially conceived as a reaction to the Buddhism and especially Mahabharata and the Krishna cult were aimed to stop the popularity of the new current which was perceived by the Brahman cast as a threat to the accepted order (as Buddhism plainly rejected not the Hindu religion in itself but the rigid stratification in social layers). In time India came back to the Hindu religion, Buddhism being now a pretty small minority, but the other countries converted to Buddhism and especially those in continental Asia suffered a massive infusion of Hinduism through the third process - of the Buddhist monks trying to peacefully assymilate back into the Buddhism the Hinduist reaction to their cult rather than opposing to it by aggressive means. Things were not so smooth as described, religious war was raging constantly here and there but nevertheless Buddhism proved as a solid ground to integrate many currents which were innitially opposed. Ramayana and Mahabharata as we know them today are versions dating from as late as maybe 16-th century A.C. whilst the Hinduist reaction to Buddhism was at climax around 7-800 A.C. so it is rather hard to know how things really happened, the more that early Buddhism had a point of honour in not writing any dogmatic writings but conserve a pure master-to-disciple path of transmitting tradition.

>Hinduism as nowadays

excuse me : wanted to say :

Hinduism as we know it now was not the supreme attempt to unify old Indian religions into a unique current but also a reaction to the Buddhism.

Hi,
I have the Hanuman tattoo, it was done the traditional way (painfull), in the ring of the Sasiprapa Muay Thai Camp in Bangkapi, Bangkok.
There was quite a ceremony involved prior to and after the actual tattoo.
I also had to pay the amount in 'nines' which is lucky as nine in Thai means 'move forward'.
Some of my assistant instructors have since had the tattoo and blessing as well.
The writing on my tatt is ancient script and is part of the Hanuman 'chant'.
If you'd like any more information or pics please let me know.
Yours in Muay Thai
Al

yeah the ceremony is supposed to be more important than the actual tattoo, more upperclass people get the tat with clear oil so i doesnt show.

Hi,
Hey XMIKE, I'm obviously not upper class ha ha ha!.
You can view pictures of my actual tattoo process at
http://www.mightyoak.co.uk/wakt/Galleries/Thailand/index2.htm
There's not a very good pic of the tatt itself there, but I'll try to get one if anyones wants a look.
Have a great weekend.
Al

I believe the lettering can only be done by Ajarn and blessed correctly if you get the lettering done by any one else it is supposed to make you crazy later on in life as well as the person that did it.

Mines certainly not traditional...but fortunalty i dont need to dodge bullets or anything, I just like the Hanuman image, its my club name and it means alot to me. (...a bit like most peoples tattoo's!)

I spoke with Duwoa about getting one ages ago, and he said I should shave my head and get it done right on the top....Ouch !

i have been debating getting one my self Russ, i was thinking of the scene where Hanuman is battling an opponent below him and having it come upwards from lower back to middle back/ribs

I used a little thing called the "search" function :-P

Craig Hanuman, in case you're interested... if you come over to Bangkok you can still have the lettering applied & get it blessed by an Ajarn, many of them appreciate the present method of tattooing, but not when it involves the lettering

here are various photo links to Yant:

I got one(hanuman) on my shoulder with thai writing,A proverb which i like.
Hellfighter
Posted: 2008-05-08 07:08:02
having thai writing such as you have is good because it has meaning, but when it is copied from a photo or drawing in agkara lettering and it is incorrect... that is when bad things can and do happen

*now before I go any further, PLEASE don't start post silly comments about the voodoo and witchcraft... this magic is tried, tested and does work and myself, many other farang and S.E.A.'s believe in it, so please think before you post*

the writing that is used around a Yant is "agkara" or pali sanskrit... it is used through out India and is still taight within Cambodia

many Yant are surrounded by Khmer writing (Cambodia) as that is where the magic was originally created and is still utilized in Thailand today

travel to Northern Thailand you can receive Yant that is only pali sanskrit or Lanna lettering

if anyone has any serious questions please ask and I will try to answer them as best as I can
