By the way the rules are simple. Some of the fights will follow Kyokushin traditional rules while others will follow K-1 rules. ( i doubt knees will be allowed since the event takes place in France)

Glaube Feitosa & Igor Peplov is the two best names on the poster. Alexander Pichkounov beat Nicholas Pettas by KO and Glaube Feitosa on points back in 1999, but his career has not been that successes full ever since, and as I see him, he is not on the same high level as Glaube - but still he is one great fighter.

I hope to see Lechi Kurbanov in action at the event, he is in my eyes the best Kyokushin fighter in the world today.

Lechi Kurbanov will be fighting a french guy under traditional Kyokushin rules.
Igor Peplov, Alexander Pichkounov and Glaube Feitosa will be fighting under K-1 rules against Sheik Kango, Rani Berbachi and Cyril Diabate.

I've never seen these guys fighting under K-1 rules. I'm curious. I know that Igor Peplov has been fighting in Japan under Kickboxing rules (in NJKF events??).

Can't wai to see this. I think this is positive for the development of Kyokushin Karate. It would be nice to see also Kyokushin Karate fighters under free fighting rules. The best way to do this, i guess would be organizing an open event only for Karate schools.

I say this because it's frustrating for some Kyokushin fighters who wish to try other forms of testing their skills. I think Hajime Kazumi, Ryuta Noji and even Ryo Chonan is a good example of this.

However, there are some Karate schools who already organize this kind of events such as Shidokan, Zendokan and Shinbukan amongst others. I hope the Kyokushin Kaikan follows the same (or a similar) path.

By the way tnks for the pictures.

ichigeki has really got to shit or get off the pot. put the glove on and fight a full card of kickboxing. kyokushin is cool and all but without the blows to the head it is a sport the can do all day. filho and kazumi have each done 100 man kumite. it makes not sense to bring the stars in to fight one karate match only.

if kyokushin is really nervous, they can just put one karate guy against another karate guy. there, karate wins guaranteed and we see kickboxing.

if i want to see karate, i'll expect to see most of these guys fight 4 or 5 times over a period of hours against increasingly dangerous opponents.
Sonik
Posted: 2005-02-21 08:42:29
Hum.. Felix are you europenean? Because this wil take place at the Bercy M;artial Arts Festival. It's a Kyokushin Karate demonstration. I guess it's normal to feature matches with tradicional rules and matches with kickboxing rules.

However, I would like to see them fighting under free fighting rules as well. I think that's the most realistic form of kumite. Of course Kickboxing may sound more exciting to watch beacause there's no grapling envolved (meanig that odds are that most of the fights won't be boring to watch, the guys will be punching and kicking each other out until one falls or quits).

Anyway like i said before i think this is good for the development of Kyokushin Karate.

The last picture backs Pauls comment.

Putting TOA in any top class promotion, let alone with a great fighter like Glaube, is a joke.
Oliver Sperling
Posted: 2005-02-24 01:19:51
Then all K-1 is a joke.

Having Botha in any class promtion, alone with Remy Bojansky is a joke. Having Jefferson Silva to fight Hoost is a joke, having Mark Hunt to fight Nakasako is a joke, having Amada to fight Jerome.....

haha fair call!

All the circus stuff didn't really bother me (thought it was all kind of funny and entertaining, as long as other good fights), and I couldn't understand why it upset people so much. Then along came TOA and now I understand.....

Yeah i heard K-1 is hiring another Sumo wrestler......As far as i know he's gonna fights in the K-1 Seoul event.

I don't mind seeing some beasts such as Toa, Akebono or Montanha Silva once in a while but these guys don't deserve to be treated like the top of cream cuz they're not.

Superleague is doing fine in Europe and i hope Ishigeki comes up as a good alternative to K-1 as long as they don't follow the same path.

Would be nice to have a another event like K-1 Dream back in 1998 when Kyokushin and Seido Karate fighters were matched against top kickboxers. Those were days....

Posted: 2005-02-26 10:46:01
Do you know who the french fighters are? The Kyokushin guys will be facing Rani Berbachi (Team Lebanner), Cyril Diabate (who's also a great fighter), and Sheik Kongo( this guy i've never seen him but i heard he's good although he's more experienced in free fighting).

Notice that this is will be an Ishigeki demonstration, i mean, there won't be many fights. The resto of the bouts will be under traditional Kyokushin rules.

I think this is will be a good show. Honestly i think it was a huge step for Kyokushin to step up in the ring against top kickboxers such as Peter Aerts, Jerome Lebanner, Ernesto Hoost, Stefan Leko bacj in the late 90's. They should have begun with easier opponents. I guess they learned the hard way and it's positive to see more Kyokushin fighters into K-1/NJKF competitions. I hope to see them as well in free fighting events such as Pride, Shooto and UFC.

If it was up to me i would organize and all Karate styles tournment with two kinds of rules: K-1 and UFC rules. I think this could be a huge success in Japan and maybe in other european countries. Just think about it, having Kyokushin, Seido, Daido, Shidokan, Seishin, Shinbukan.... in a single tournment under these rules.

Aerts, Remy, or Carter Williams, since they are all busy at a K-1 in Korea.

Sonik:

The K-1 Dream 1998 show where kickboxers was fighting a karate team, had all the big names on the poster, but it was not a great show.

I mean, Nicholas Pettas was in his first K-1 fight standing face to face with Leko, and Glaube who also was wearing gloves for the first time, was to fight Mike Bernado. Talking about throwing the lams for the wolves!

Satake was fighting Matt Skelton, Hoost was fighting Musashi…. I mean, I find it hard to see the value in this event? As you say yourself; "They should have begun with easier opponents".
Felix
Posted: 2005-02-28 03:19:53
at first, i blamed k-1 for rushing the karate guys. now i think it was the kyokushin side that wanted the top guys against top guys. when glaube lost to kucharsewski, tension between k-1 and kyokushin got very very tight. losing to lower level fighters is an embarrassment to kyokushin so they make sure it never happens. in short, glaube has to fight aerts and hoost.
Oliver Sperling
Posted: 2005-02-28 07:45:09
I think that the reason for the crazy matches at the 1998 K-1 Dream, was all Ishii’s work.

He loved to see the best Kyokushin fighters in the world loose on row. The Kyokushin organization had nothing to do with the many disgraceful judgment in Glaube fights against Satake and Musashi, Filhos fight in Las Vegas against Sergie Ivanovich, Pettas in K-1 Japan against Musashi etc.etc.

Ishii love to see Kyokushin in a bad spot!
Sonik
Posted: 2005-02-28 19:21:49
I know K-1 Dream was a bad day for Kyokushin. But defeat should be taken as a learning experience. Pride sometimes blinds us. Kyokushin fighters need to be humble and learn from others as well. I think that's the spirit of Kyokushin. To adapt the most efective fighting techniques of all other fighting styles into your own style and learn from your defeats. To know yourself. Your weak points and your strong points. That might be even more important than knowing your opponents.

Even though Nick and Feitosa lost their matches back in 1998, Filho still managed to pull a win over Aerts (with some luck though).
Nevertheless, i think these Kyokushin guys have improved a lot from back then. By the way, when i was saying that K-1 Dream was great it's only because of the concept (Kyokushin vs Seido vs Shidokan vs Muay Thai ....). Of course it ain't nice
to see an unexperienced karateka steeping into the ring to fight a top kickboxer.

As far as what concerns Ishi, i'm not aware of all those schemes against the Kyokushin Kaikan but i guess things didn't turn out very well for him. As far as i know he's in jail right now. If he wanted to embarass Kyokushin he should take a good look at himself. He has dishonoured his own Karate school (at least in the japanese point of view,i mean, just wonder, a guy comes into a Seido dojo and the sensei there tells the student that the kancho is locked up in jail). And Nobuaki Kakuda ain't no saint either. In fact, Seido without Andy is almost nothing. Lucky them to still have Sam Greco, Petar Mastorovic and Yasuhiro Kazuya on their side but even these last two will hardly ever get the same consideration Andy and Greco got.

I am not sure why people get the Roufus's mixed up, but Rick has never retired 5 times. I believe you might be referring to his brother Duke.

As for the fights I posted about, I heard those rumors from another site and was trying to verify them. I finally talked with Rick himself who said he has been in talks with K1, but nothing has been set in stone. He hasn't gotten the call for any upcoming match.

From talking with him, I don't really think getting a fight is about the money. His new gym in Arizona is pretty successful. (When I was there, there were around 20 people on the mats, and a group of us was waiting for Jiu-jitsu to start) He is doing very well right now. What I got from talking with him was that he is just itching to get back in the ring. He likes to fight. He has a family and a new baby on the way, and I think he wants to work out some frustration.

I came asking a serious question and I get ridicule from a bunch of nobodies. God Bless the internet.

Cyril Diabate vs Alexander Pichkounov
Should be a good fight. Last Ichi Geki
Pichkounov fought well, but a little
conservative. His skills seemed pretty sound and
he may be able to make the transition to glove fighting.
Diabate will be a real test for him.

I have never seen Sheik Kongo fighting but he's agot o good record so far (14 victories by KO in Muay Thai). He's also experienced in MMA. I think he's a good opponent for Glaube.

By the way Paul, what do you think of Hajime Morigushi? He will be fighting Rani Berbachi who trains with Jerome Lebanner nad has great experience in Muay Thai.

Lechi Kurbanov Vs. Alexandre Rodrigues sounds to me like the fight of the event.

Alexandre Rodrigues is a good opponent to the great Kurbanov, he is big, heavy and strong, and has lots of routine fighting on international level. Alexander is on the paper, one of the strongest super heavyweights in Europe. But... Still there is one world in between his skills and Kurbanov's, who in my book is one of the best Kyokushin fighters in the world today. Kurbanov has the most powerful and dynamics kicks money can buy, he is a very strong puncher - he has amazing movement, and the ability to change the pace in fight when needed, round after round. I will not be surprised if Kurbanov wins this fight on ippon.

Alejandro Navarro from Spain is also a new exciting name, who just has won the 2005 French Open, and Spain Open last year in the heavyweight class. But if Rodrigues is going to get his hands full against Kurbanov, I can’t find words for what there are going to happen Navarro, when he is standing face to face with the Russian silver medalist Sergey Plekanov, from the 8th World Open in November last year.

Sergey Plekanov is a machine, and the only reason why he didn’t became world champion in IKO1 Kyokushin last year, was because the Kyokushin organization had decided to give the title Kiyama, even before the event began. At it also happened to Matsui back in 1987. Corruptions one of Kyokushin weakness!!

Apparently it was televised live Eurosport that night, so the hotel staff told me when we got back to the hotel. Dont have any more info on that part.

The rules were K-1 rules but with no knees.
France Kickboxing rules due to not a Muay Thai event.

Alexander Pichkounov (Russia) did what he had to do to win.
I thought Alex did very well, considering his opponent is a very experienced South Paw.
Alex is also making a good transition to glove fighting.
It was a very good fight for Alex and much respect to Cyril Diabate he is one tough fighter.
