For those who haven't heard of Samart...

Samart Payakaroon, once called "The Bruce Lee of Boxing", was both a Muay Thai champion and the two time world Jr. Featherweight boxing champion (in 1986 and 1994), defeating Lupe Pintor by KO in the fifth round. Largely unknown in the western world, Payakaroon was a lighting quick boxer with tremendous knockout power. Regarded by many as the greatest Muay Thai fighter in history...

I had never seen Samart before, but WOW, he's sooooo quick it's scary. I was expecting someone his age to be a lot slower... ;)

Great if you can post the video it would be good to see him even in a demo. Samart was a brilliant fighter, possibly the best of all time- particularly of the modern era. Great to hear he is still doing at bit. For those interested in MuayThai who have not seen him at his best, take a look at the recently released best of Somchai 2 VCD. You will see the evidence of his devastating punching and teeps. As far as I remember his last proper fight was in Europe (Paris) where he completely outclassed his opponent. I think his opponent was Comery and the referee Kouider (France). Samart stopped his opponent very early in the fight.

Thoroughly nice chap too, he was at a barbecue at a friends house near me with James Wattana the snooker champ last year and Preecha the chap liam harrison fought at skens.Shame he didnt do anything to do with thai boxing when he was here :-(

Is Samart the guy who also recorded a few music albums?
erichaycraft
Posted: 2005-04-05 09:01:44
Samart's last fight was in the USA in Los Angeles. He lost a dec.

Samart did indeed record a few albums and was an actor for a while.

wow buakow_boy you got to meet the legend!
Good skills!

His teeps were out of this world, so well timed, and a tidy boxer too.

it was before id seen him fight and yes i think he stopped a few careers with front kicks!

i think he did some acting work in the soap-opera's in thailand as well.
as well as the thai-pop record thing....he is a champ at everything he turns his hand to!!!!!

I met him in 2002 in BKK. Me and Ralph Beale got drunk with him and PhitpatNoi's on his French wine after the IFMA World Championships.
There was a load of other top ranked stadium champs there as well but too drunk to remember all their names. Ralph and I had a photo taken with all of them.
While we were posing Samart said he was #1 thai boxer of all time, Phitpatnoi was #4......he then pointed to me and said you 394....
.....I thought not bad, considering!!! :) he he he

(Unfortunately, Ralphs camera got stolen about 3 days after that...would have been a great photo!)

Would Phipatnoi be PudPadNoi who resides in France now?
Fredric Rosenberg
Posted: 2005-04-05 16:23:04
Hey Eric ... Pudpadnoi lives and teach in Sweden now , he is trainer at Vallentuna Boxing camp that got fighters such as Jorgen Kruth WMC World heavyweight champ , Martin Holm etc ....

TonyMyers
Posted: 2005-04-06 13:28:46
Yes, That is Pudpadnoi. Brilliant fighter, good referee and a real nice guy (who does like red wine). The only time I actually saw him fight live was in a demo fight in Paris against Krongsak, even then he had brilliant kicks. A real MuayThai legend.

I have some great Muay Thai vids of Samarat.
He was beaten by Jeff Fenech in international boxing losing his world title belt but he looked almost unbeatable under Thai rules.
cheers

Cheers pachanga for taking the time to share the video clip. It was good to see Samart still has a 'good eye' and is still sharp.

Colin, it was a pleasure mate. Although it's a bit off topic, things are really coming together now in Scotland; a good set up with the school of excellence and nice to see everyone unified and working together.

I couldn't believe Samart was that quick...You can clearly see how he just dodges everything that's thrown at him...I wish I would've took my camcorder instead of my digital cam...

Rob,
Can you post some of Samart's fights? I'd love to check them out!

Amazing how popular Samart still is. It never fails that every time I go to a Thai restaurant and mention his name, the smiles that I receive. He is easily the Sugar Ray Leonard of Muay Thai in regards to recognition.

Samart is Still acting to a certain extent here in Thailand...especially on variety shows, as a threesome with...Somluck Sor Khamsing and Khaosai Galaxy.

All 3 of them...(Smart/Khaosai and Somluck) own their own gyms here in Bangkok.

Khaosai just opened his last year.

Samart has 2 good boxers in the higher weighs, but has 2 very good young fighters who are just kids now.

His gym is quiet expensive to train at but a beautiful facility.

Samarts FIGHTS were a beautiful beautiful pleasure to watch.

Thanks for sharing the video :)

he is always popping into Sityodtong (which is where he came and for from) ... always says hello and always has time for the fighters, especially the younger ones .... its a shame but his brother (Kongtoranee) always seems to be over looked he was also one of the greats ... and now an unbelievable trainer.

Couldn't agree more there with ya about "Kongtoanee"...but I always put it down to the fact that "Samart" got the looks in the family :P

lol yes mate there is that ... Samart was and still is actually a bit of a play boy ... Chard has the sort of face you know means business .... I was there a few years ago when a few bikes with big big eastern Europeans turned up ... the atmosphere changed instantly at the gym .... Chard calmly got up from his chair walked up and bitch slapped one of them , knocked him straight on his arse ... they all turned around walked away , never saw them again ... never did find out what went on lol... Chard def has a face for radio lol

Trained with Samart back in 2009 i think it was....there are thai boxers....and then there is Samart.
he is really beyond compare, even now his skills are mad. A few people round his time like Den Muangsurin and Dieselnoi could probably hurt him but evertyhing combined, punching , power, teeps, combos all insane never been anyone like him
