A K A : Action Pics and Results – 22/07/2006


The fourth A.K.A. Kickboxing event of the 2006 season was held on Saturday the 22nd July. This was promoted by Lee Green, of Higher Level Gym, and staged at the Urmston Leisure Centre in Manchester. This competition had as the headline bouts, a five match International team contest, between England and Turkey.

The World governing body for A.K.A. Kickboxing, the International A.K.A.- (I.A.K.A.)- coordinated between A.K.A. England (A.K.A.E.) and A.K.A. Turkey (A.K.A.T.) to contest two European titles and three World Title contests.

Originally it had been planned that the International matches would be between England and Belarus, however due to unforeseen circumstances the card had to be reorganised as the Belarus team could not attend on this occasion. It is hoped that Belarus will be fielding a team at the next A.K.A. event, planned for September 2006 which is being promoted by Pele Nathan of Altrincham.

This event was organised thanks to the support of the official 2006 sponsor for A.K.A. Kickboxing, one of the worlds leading martial arts equipment suppliers M.A.R. International (www.qualitymartialarts.com). Everyone involved within the support would like to thank Mr Ali proprietor of M.A.R. International for this.

DVDs are now available of all the 2005 events for just £10.00 limited while stocks last. The next two A.K.A. events are, September ( Altrincham – Pele Nathan ) and November ( Darlington – Craig Willis ) all featuring amateur Championship action.

how comes there are between 7 and 9kg weight spreads? thats a ridiculous amount of weight

Players are still matched as closely as possible by weight, and many are matched at exactly the same weight.

However, in order to keep active some of the athletes will take matches with a wider spread than is usual in the PRO. game.

Amateur safety armour is worn, and heavier more padded gloves are used. Also the rules format allows for wider weight divisions.

The A.K.A. Kickboxing system, using Olympic style 'open scoring' (score machines) inclines the players to use technique and speed to score points wins, rather than look for stoppage wins with power shots. Especially as we have the T.K.O. stoppage by Outclass ( Player leads by 20 points ).

Also too, the rules allowed for techniques are K-1 style, so there is only limited clinch-holding with the knee-kick, where weight can make a lot of difference.

Due to these reasons, the weight issue is not as important as it is in the PRO ranks.

The weight classes are spread over 7 kgs primarily for rankings and title bout purposes.

You will notice on the results, that some contests are listed as CATCHWEIGHT contests.

If a 69kg welterweight is matched against a 71kg middleweight - this is classed as a 'Catch weight' contest.

However the player’s results will be used to rank the athletes accordingly in their actual weight division, as opposed to ranking them in the heavier division that they competed in.

We have had 15 A.K.A. Kickboxing shows, bi monthly for two and a half years now which is a lot of bouts, and the system is working brilliantly.
