If you ask me....... No!

There will never be another Andy Hug, just like they’re never will be another Muhamed Ali, Elvis Presley or Michael Jordan.

(If you get my point and understand my "strange" way to compare?)

maybe a fighter who people can see andys spirit or heart in.

as a person or a fighter people may remind you of him but never replace him.

G:

I truly respect that you DONT like Andy Hug, there is also a handful of fighters that I don’t like. But I do not understand why you can not show this great human and fighter just a little respect. Why do you over and over again, have to talk badly about Andy Hug, I just don’t get it?

If you don’t like Andy, well.... Fine with me! But the man is dead, show some respect, ok. You DONT have to write: " good thing there will never be another Andy!"

Think twice before you write you next message!!!

i respect him. but hes no Ali. he may have bin the gratest Kyokushin guy when he foght in kyokushin rules (but i even here feilo kicked his ass there) but in k-1 he is not #1 hes part of the top 8 but not #1 and you guys make him out to be the best thing that has ever happend but it just sounds you got sucked in bye markeding. hes good but Artes,Hoost,Labaner,Bernardo, etc theres to many to name that are way better if not just as good. eh it good you like him just don't say hes better then he was. and it sounds to me you just like him cuse hes kyokushin/seidokaikan. heck i cheer for the MT/Kickboxers in K-1 but say if Feilo won i would say its about time even though i don't cheer for him (hes good). (i hope that made sence and i probly miss spelled 100 words)

Hey, I into Thai boxing, but I still say that Andy was my favorite fighter. Plus correct me if I am wrong but, Andy beat Hoost, Aerts, Lebanner, Bernardo etc. I think that you (G) are giving him a lot less credit than he truely deserves.

G,
let me put this in perspective for you.

"i respect him. but hes no Ali."

you seem to put ali in a class of his own.

do you know about the cut glove in the henry cooper fight?
dundee cut ali's glove and pulled the stuffing out to buy his fighter time after cooper flattened him.

do you know about the liston fights?
they were both fixed? liston punched ali's gloves while ali did whatever he wanted.

do you know about the ernie terrel fight?
ali thumbed him so badly, ernie had to fight like 10 rounds with only one eye.

how about decisions against ken norton?
why did foreman never get a rematch when everyone did?

he didn't go to vietnam because his religion is against violence. yet his own church assassinated malcom x. isn't that hypocrisy?

i have tons of respect for ali. he was great but i don't buy all the rubbish people have created.

hug made it to the k-1 finals three years in a row. you know who else has done that? no one. he fought injured in 99 and died before the 2000 gp. no one denies his loses or weak points. what we think was special about him was his way to overcome them.

think about it. you step into the ring and you've got the weaker chin, shorter reach, smaller weight and softer punch and you still win. you're the only karateka to win the gp. you're not only a cross over athlete but to compete against you opponents had to take the sport up a notch.

at the end of your career, the karate spirit takes over. you start to think about teaching. you take a group of fighters and prepare them. bajrami beats crocop and van dams in the same night. mcdonald goes on to beat pettas, feitosa and knocks crocop out in one round. kusatsu goes the distance with abidi.

ali, as great as he was, never became a teacher. no one expected him to.

your right that there are other great k-1 fighters. hoost for instance will probably became a fine trainer. i doubt aerts, filho, bernardo or lebanner will.

I respect Andy for things he has accomplished...in fights where he was the underdog. Let's face it...Andy is the ultimate underdog. He excelled in many fights where people didn't expect him to do much of anything. If Andy stepped up against a top opponent, they didn't get an easy win.

And G, if you have points to make, cool. If you're typing shit just to piss people off then I'll happily show you the exit door. I can't stand punks and I don't want them on Ax.

Felix - You are a little off base with alot of your comments. You make alot of accusations with no proof and merely damage your reputation. Andy Hug was a great fighter and people who say otherwise are kidding themselves - and we all know that. But Ali was a man who changed the thinking of a nation. Liston was heavily involved with the mob and was killed by them when he was still a young man. He ALLEDGEDLY threw the first fight because he was in debt to some dons but the second fight was a clear KO win to the greatest. George Foreman had a mental breakdown after losing to ALi in the Rumble in the Jungle. He didn't fight again for years - that's why there was no rematch.

I have watched his bouts against Ken Norton and had absoloutely no problem with his win - but again - it is a subjective sport and you can hardly blame a boxer for the decisions of ringside judges.

And Felix you are way out of line criticising his refusal to go to war - because his actions brought to the attention alot of things about the situation in Vietnam - and it saved alot of lives. I think you should research the full story of his stance against Vietnam and those who would send him off to die for a country that wouldn't let him ride in a bus if there was a whites only sticker on it.

Felix you get angry at people who have disagreed with your support of Andy HUg - so in return you try to ruin the reputation of a great fighter and a great man. Hug showed true spirit as a fighter but Ali battled far greater oppression in and out of the ring. He lived with constant threats of violence against him and his family by those who disagreed with his politics. You shouldn't attempt to diminish another's reputation just to get your own point of view across - it is not a good way to argue and reflects poorly on you.

Dirk:

Thanks for the kind words my good friend - again! I don’t know if I am the biggest Andy Hug fan on this planet? But I do like and respect this amazing fighter and human a lot! Andy has been a big inspiration to me when I was a young Kyokushin fighter and student in the late 80’s, and I have respected his talent, spirit, technique and strength ever since. So yes, I am a big fan of this great champion and human.

Felix:

As always you have done your homework, I like your messages and I respect your enormous knowledge, and your point of view. It is always great to read yours and Dirk Stal's messages, because you both know a lot about material art - and about the fighters your write/talk about.

G:

This is my last message to you young man. You are only 16 years old, and it shows in your messages and lack of respect to Andy Hug, and to all of us on the Axe Discussion Board. It is simply waist of time to read and answer your messages!

You write in your last message that Andy Hug sucked, and that we all just should screw it. What are trying to prove, and what is your goal? We are all adults on this board, and we are all far too intelligent to get mad on you little young G. So please don’t waist your time trying to piss us off, read a book or go out playing with your friends instead. You should rather use your energy and spare time, to do your homework and to prepare yourself for school tomorrow, believe me G, you need it!

I highly respect that you don’t like Andy Hug, that is more than ok with me!! But... There is a big big difference, not to like a fighter and then to talk the way you do about a human and fighter, who gave hole his life to the material art. And G., please don’t forget that Andy Hug is dead, you simply don’t talk about dead people the way you do.

I know that you are trying to piss me off, but if you really would like to get me mad, do it with style and with respect, by proving a point! The way you have chosen is to primitive, and it tells more about you, than it do about Andy or us on this board.

dan,
why would liston taint the eyes of ali with a caustic substance if he was going to throw the fight?
and if you believe that liston was so badly hurt by that lil punch ali landed, i have a bridge to sell ya.
as far as his refusal to go to war. i have no problem with that.especially back then and the way he's people(our people)were treated.but i wish he felt so strongly about his religious beliefs pertaining to his wives.

dan,

ali is one of my favorite boxers. i can't choose between him and joe louis.

the point i was making was that, as great as he was, he doesn't deserve a halo and wings. i plan on seeing the will smith movie, but i expect a nice piece of fiction based on a true story.

i'm not angry with anyone. it broke my heart to find out the truth but in the end, i still respect him as a great fighter.

oliver knows andy has been flattened. why can't he look beyond that and admire the fighter for his successes?

Ok ok I kinda blew up with the Ali thing and Andy hug sucking thing I said. I mean he wasn’t that bad but the point I’m trying to get off is that the K-1 and some of you treat Andy hug in higher regard then say arets and hoost. Its true hug beat them but I’m pity sure you count up the times they KOed each other (/wins) that they beat him more then he beat them. Also look how old Hoost is and how he still in it (thou the age is showing) I mean I’m not saying aerts and hoost are the best of the best of all time but I just think they all the top fighters should be treating the same and not one picked out as a poster boy because he’s say affiliated with Seidokaikan. I hope that made sense this time.
Oliver Sperling
Posted: 2001-12-22 14:02:06
G:

It make no sense at all, not for this time or for the many messages you have posted in the past. I really don’t want to spend more time defending Andy Hug or writing messages to you.

You know nothing about Andy Hug, about his long fighting career, about his life in Switzerland or in Japan, or about how much he was respect by his opponents in Kyokushin, Seidokaikan and in the K-1. You simply just don’t know, and it shows. I understand that you don’t like Andy, and that is fair. But at least keep all the negative and primitive words to yourself young boy, because I really don’t want to read the immature disrespect you are writing.

1) Andy Hug does not need to be defended! His amazing career and life speaks for it self, wetter you understand it or like it?

2) I don’t want to write or answer your messages, because you never learn any way. You are to young to understand what many people are trying to tell you... But if you are ready to "learn" and if you want just to have a few friends on the Axe, think about this:

"If you are looking for mistakes, don’t use a binoculars, use a mirror".

G,

if you look only at the numbers, i can see how you would reach that conclusion. no one is really saying that andy could kick everyones butt like ali or joe louis.

think about the other things. hug entered the ring and he gave up punching power, reach, weight and chin. he was also had to learn a new set of rules.

if you're a kickboxing teacher and you want to have your students watch someone fight using learned skills more than natural gifts (iron jaw etc), you'll suggest andy hug. you won't pick aerts because you can never teach someone to absorb punishment like that.

again, no one thinks andy could kick everyone's butt. he was usually the under dog.

it may be correct to say that there will be not exactly another andy hug, but some similiar guys will exist in the future with some similiar anatomy, skills ,approach, way of thinking, menthality and attitude ...however, not in k-1 ( may be in kick boxing and kyokushin & ashihara fields),since less weighed and not sufficient tall guys would most probably not have too much chance by the improving quality of fighters in the direction of physical skills...

from another point of view, although we feel respect to andy (due to his persistancy, menthality, approach) it is sure that there were better fighters and always will be also...however, we have to let him peace in the future and remember that he was a good guy in the fighting arena who has brought some alternative color...

In defence of G.

His last post he basically said sorry and explained what he ment and you guys still kept at him...

I agree that your earlier posts G were not well worded and somewhat rude but from the few times we've met and from what your last post says I think I understand a little more.

Guys-Gcame across sounding a bit rude but read his last post again and take it from me. Hes quite a nice guy and I think he just needs to watch his wording a little.

I think many people have a lot of respect for Andy because of how he treated and related to others. Of how he acted in defete etc...not just on his abilities as a 'kickboxer', though maybe that also.

I heard very good things about him from those who have delt with him...I didn't care for him greatly as a fighter but I can still respect him(if the infos right i never new him either way to say either way) as a person and as a fighter for being a fighter.

Makes sence G?

I didnt get to watch alot of his fights but the ones i did manage to I was overwhelmed.

I was never a huge Andy Hug fan. I allways liked watching the big hitting guys, but I have to admit it used to take me a long time to get through some of his fights on video. I mean because I was allways rewinding the tape back to see how incredible and spectacular his kicks were. I thought he was the most technical of all the fighters on the K1 Circuit and will miss seeing those beautiful moves he used to pull off so easily.
