And now he wants a peice of Danny Steel. This fight looks like its gonna happen. Does Danny have a good chance or is Hector been gone too long?

God only knows the last time Hector fought. The last time I personally saw him fight was against Coban, but he was also KO´d against Ramon Dekers and he KO´d Tagami, the guy the Urquidez ``beat`` in 1993. He also fought on the first Draka card in 1992 and lost due to a cut if I remember right. Juan Torres was the only American to win on that card. Come to think about it, he beat Yoel Judah, Zab Judah´s dad in 1990 or so in a full-contact match. I doubt he has fought in the last 8 years or so, since 94 or 95 at least. I don`t see Danny having any problem with him, even though Danny`s skills arent what they once were. I saw Ivan Silva try to pulverize Danny with punches and they just bounced off his thick skull as if it were armour. Ivan Silva was a much, much better boxer than Peņa and a much harder puncher. As far as kicks and knees go, Peņa wont have a chance in that department either. I pick Danny Steele by 4th round KO.

HHHhhhmmmmmmmm......very intering Doug.I met Juan Torres here at a boxing camp in San Diego. He was doing pro Boxing at the time. Great Guy/great fighter. Victor Zamora took me to this ranch in Santee and he was trying to get me inn to get paid as a sparring partner for these guys. But I was still an Amature fighter at the time and would have to be licensed as a pro.I think I had a fight coming up at the time so it never panned out.

Remind me to tell you the story he told me of when he fought Peter Cunningham.

Post it here dude. I actually have that fight on tape somewhere. It was a non-legkicking match that was very competitive. I think Juan had very few fights at the time. I also have Juan on tape against John Adams. Be busted the crap out of Adam's legs and Adams looked like a totally shot fighter, and this was 1992. I am amazed when I still see his name on Dennis Warner posters as he is completely shot. Anyways, post what Torres told you. I always love hearing behind the scenes stories.

Oh yea, Torres was the only one to win the Draka fight in the first one that I mentioned before.

Pena fought in Puerto Rico I think 1996. I believe he beat Gilbert Ballentine.

Juan Torres has a detached retina. He retired. Torres beat Zab Judah's dad in kickboxing? I remember Zab Judah beating Juan Torres in pro boxing. It was a quick knockout. I guess he was getting revenge for his Dad!
Doug

I meant to say that Peņa beat Judah. Zab stopped Torres in one round if I am correct.

I thought he had lots of potential.

He would knock guys out silly.

Some of his wins were against
as mentioned, Joel Judah, Asuka Nobuya, Tagami, Gilbert Ballentine,

Some losses I remember off hand. Coban Lookchaomaesaitong, Samrantong Kiatbangchong, Ramon Dekker.

Had two controversial technical draws (refused to continue) Changnoi Sirimongkol, Manu Ntoh.

I asked him what was it like to fight the great Peter Cunningham. Was he legit(which everyone knows if you seen him fight).Juan looked me straight in the eye's and said he's legit and then some. He had nothing but great things to say about Sweet Pete.He said he was suppose to throw that fight and they would give him the rematch. But when that round came his corner said your arm hurts right? and juan Said no it doesn't I think I can take him.And he said he tried, but Pete was too good. Don't know if there was a rematch.Great guy..
Great fighter.

Juan Torres was supposed to "throw the fight" against Cunningham? That's kind of funny cuz when Zab Judah knocked Juan out it did not look right to me. I kind of had the idea that something was not on the up-and-up. But, hey, I wasn't in there taking the punches and I don't like to think that a fighter like Torres would do something like that.
Doug

I've seen plenty of "fixed" fights in both sports. Sometimes its pre-arranged, and sometimes not. Sometimes the opponent is hired not to win and just take the easy way out. I was real surprised with Torres' loss against Zab Judah, as it did look funny. But, you just never know what one punch will do. I heard that Peņa got locked up for wife battery, but I may be very wrong on that and I hope to God I am.

Hector fought Manu at the end of 1989. This was at the Hollywood Palladium. Pootpardnoi brought two students, Manu must have weighed close to 145 or less at that time. Hector would try and bomb away but Manu would relax and cover up. When it was Manu's turn, it looked as if every kick Manu threw buckled Pena. In the third round there was a kick to the inner thigh and Pena claimed that it was a groin kick. They tried to give him some adequate time to recover but either him or his corner refused to have it go on.

An almost identical performance in 1996 against Changnoi, he looked like he had the upperhand in the first round. When Changnoi turned up the heat and grappled with Pena, there was nothing Pena could do except grab the ropes and have the referee break it. Finally he fell to the grown and I remember the referee (Nelson Hamilton) motioning him to get up as if there was no real call for him to take a breather from a groin shot. The ref consulted some other guys from the commision and they called it a technical draw. Lots of boos for that fight.

Oh yea, he was one tough cookie. He probably had over 50 amateur fights as well and was very good by the time he turned pro. The ¨Jet Center¨ produced a number of great fighters in the 80`s: Pete Cunningham, Hector Peņa, Ricky O`Kane, ``Thunderwolf``, Efren Contreras to name a few. They also promoted cards at their gym at least once a month. I fought there twice in 1985 and it was such a thrill to meet the Jet in person.

How about my first amateur boxing fight? 1981!!!!!!First kickboxing fight-1984!!!! I missed my prom because I had a fight. Well, that and I couldn`t get a date. Luckily my new style mail order bride is 10 years younger than me and that keeps me young. Of course, she wants more babies and that makes me feel ancient considering that my first daughter is now 18 years old! No, you cannot date her :) Besides, I dont want her going out with looser kickboxers, I prefer the looser guy in the lowered KIA that thinks he`s hot shit. Wait until the surprise he finds when he gets the ``chance`` to spar with me :)
