I too visited Ashley a few times in hospital. I was there every day for a while, as my wife was having a kidney transplant.
I couldn't believe it when i saw Pele walking down the corridor one day, and i was totally shocked when i heard what had happened.
Anyway, if you remember he was wiggling the fingers about and hoping the tendons weren't too badly damaged, and was always pretty cheery etc.
I can't believe it's five years to attempt to fight again. I still watch the fight when he beat Dida quite often, and i only hope that he can rebuild to somewhere near that level again.
I guess everyone will want to try to get his name on their records now.
IMO he was probably the best Muaythai fighter we have produced in this country (apart from Pete:-) and if nothing else, he can inspire a new generation of fighters who missed seeing him in his prime/youth.
