That was agreat shot eh Boa.That photo not only captures the moment, it shows that the shot was actually a foul (allthough obviously accidental) and the main reason most sanctioning bodies (ones that dont fight with elbows )outlaw the spinning back fist, because the backfist was so easily (though accidentally)converted into an elbow strike when the opponent moved forward unexpectedly and simultaneously with the launching of that spin technique.
I had 2 Muay Thai rules fights where i did the opposite. I was throwing a spinning back elbow and noticed the other fighter stepping back and therefore out of range of the elbow,so my elbow missed but my converted backfist didnt.
As for fighters choosing to use the backfist as a last ditch panic response, who cares why it was thrown? I actually learned this technique because after my first two fights i watched the videos of both of them and noticed that i tended to turn out of the way of punches and i knew it wasnt because i was scared as such, but because i hadnt been taught how to defend yet, so turning was my only way to avoid facial rconstruction and therefore a natural instinct. I turned this instinct into a spinning backfist and the very first time i used it i knocked the guy down 10seconds into the first round. He came forward so fast and i turned my weakness into my biggest assett until they banned it.
