Ruth Ashdown: Gong Yan Li may be the KO Queen but she’s never been hit by me before!
KTMMA 3 has a stacked card of top-class England versus China bouts but one that stands out to be a potential fight of the night is the match made under WLF rules over 3x3 minutes between Lumpini Crawley’s Ruth Ashdown and China’s Gong Yan Li. Li is a Chinese superstar, the Chinese and Asian Sanda Champion with a record of 24-1earning her the nickname ‘The KO Queen’. For her part Ashdown also has an impeccable pedigree, as she is the ISKA and WBC World Muaythai Champion and has experience of Chinese opponents. “I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to fight in China, twice, beautiful Country and people. The fights I had out there were tough, as it's their way of life, what they do from school. Over here we have to work full time, and train. I look forward to them visiting our home town and seeing the way we do it. It will be a spectacular show and an incredible fight, I know I've trained hard and I'm ready!”
With international bouts it’s often the case that little beyond a formal record is known about an opponent but this is not something that phases Ruth- “It's been nice to see her face on the poster but I try not to look into them too much. Every fighter will fight each opponent differently depending on their strengths. I've learnt to expect nothing and be ready for anything!” To this end Ruth treats International bouts exactly the same way she would a domestic fight but not more so, as she sees every match as an honour. “I love fighting, this is my life and my passion. I feel honoured with every fight I am offered, although I cannot wait for this challenge on such a great show with this large federation. It’s going to be big! I'm well known for my walk outs and getting the crowd going!”
The crowd may get going for another reason and that’s because this bout has the potential to be explosive and the thought that it could emerge as fight of the night really excites Ruth. “I'd love it to be the fight of the night!! My preparation is hard but this is what I love. I will be more than ready on the night. She might be the KO Queen but she's never been hit by me before!” As previously mentioned, the fight has really captured the imagination and Ruth can’t wait to make her KTMMA debut on such a prestigious card-“I've read a bit about KTMMA and seen how amazing the shows are but never been lucky enough to see one live. I can't wait and feel honoured to be a part of it now.”
