I think you guys are missing the point that Felix is (correctly) making.

Whether you agree or not, "jap" IS a racial slur here in the USA. If it is not considered a racial slur in your part of the country - then great, but just be aware that if you are talking to an American or a Japanese... or especially a Japanese-American then you will almost certainly be offending them by using the word "jap".

The fact that British is shortened to Brit and Swedish is shortened to Swede is pure coincidence, and does not eliminate the FACT that in the USA, people consider the word "jap" a racial slur.

I could gather up 300 members of the Ku Klux Klan and get all of them to agree that the word "nigger" isn't a racial slur, but it doesn't make it so.
