140099 : Mike Tyson Vs Bob Sapp?

Oliver Sperling
Posted: 2003-08-17 05:03:19

Will this fight ever take place?

Do Bob and the K-1 organization have the money it takes, to get Tyson in the ring under K-1 rules, and why should Kancho Ishii spent so many money on Bob Sapp, when the outcome of the fight will be a 1st round ko to Tyson?

What do you think?

i think it would be a big mistake. both tyson and sapp have a strong draw but that doesn't mean they have to fight each other. if sapp fought lebanner and tyson fought mirko, the audience would be just as big as if sapp fought tyson but said audience would get a better show.

I don't know if I agree that would be the case Felix.
I mean, I think what you say sure makes sense, and I would prefer your suggestions, but I do think the Beast Vs Beast fight would draw bigger audiences.

I don't know if it always would apply, but as an example. Here in Australia we've had Gurkan Ozkan and Mike Zambidis fight on the same card a couple of times and the crowds have been around 2000 or so people. But when facing them against each other, the promoter is getting a venue that will seat about 10,000. Just how many will attend I guess is just speculation, but I reckon it will be at least triple the number we had when they were last on a show together.

Felix / Paul,

I am in two minds whether I would like to see Sapp V's Tyson. I was a massive fan of Tyson when he was a credible champion but I have no respect for Sapp.

The one thing that this match up would do is bring K1 to a much bigger world wide audience. If the press got hold of this it would really sell K1 to the world................Problem is that it would not do K1 justice!

It would be nice to raise the profile of K1 to the world but with the right kind of fighters and those two are not the match that would do K1 any favours.

Any thoughts?

sapp alone on a big show can draw 35% of the tv audience in japan.
sapp with tyson sharing the card. who knows? let's say 45%
now with them fighting each other. i don't think we can crack 50%.

tyson in the states vs. sapp or any other unknown fighter will be the same.

if they do have tyson fight sapp [they likely will since k-1 has been crap lately] they had better have a good undercard cause the main event will be so short, the whole US will think k-1 is barefoot boxing.

tyson would destroy sapp.
anyone watching (who didnt know better) would think sapp was a true representative of k1 which would do nothing for the future.
tyson v sefo or hunt etc would be truly mouthwatering

Sapp Vs Tyson
Beast Vs Beast
Would be a case of who would bit who's ear of first.

Now that would be interesting, It would look like two pitbulls locked on to each others ears.

Not a fight that would look good for kickboxing's reputation.

Oh!!! thats right our reputation is just about F@#ked anyway.
may as well let it go ahead then.

tyson may not fight under k-1 rules so sapp is as good as any k-1 fighter under straight boxing. i mean sure mirko would last longer but as soon as the fight goes beyond the 5th round, no k-1 fighter has the experience to survive. not even bernardo.

the card itself would still be a good sell. tyson would destroy sapp pretty quick and the rest of the card would be seen by the american PPV audience.

I think Sapp is a joke and would get beaten by Tyson - love to see it. Don't think they will come to agreement with money though.

Sapp has already almost succumbed under Hoost's uppercut and as far as I reckon Tyson's one will do better. Tyson has to be careful to obstruct him when he starts to throw windmill stuff and catch an opening, then RIP Bob :)

If this happened I think it would have to be Sapp vs Tyson rather than say Tyson vs Sefo or Hunt. Sapp vs Tyson would be a spectacle. Although Tyson is only a shadow of his former self, he would still take Sapp apart and the show would have the car crash factor, i.e it's ugly but you just have to watch! Tyson vs Sefo/Hunt/Cro cop would be a fight. It would be awesome because it would highlight the skill and power of K-1's elite but wouldn't generate the same hype. Also, if Sefo (for example) who has already had quite a few professional boxing fights, beat Tyson or had a good close fight, it could draw the attention of boxing promoters (if they fought under boxing rules). Top level boxing offers heaps more $$$ than K-1 ever will and the K-1 would run the risk of losing one of its stars. Ray has already said he would love to return to boxing in the future but that he gets more money being one of the top fighters in the K-1 than he would if he had to work his way up the ranks in boxing.

Sapp vs Tyson is a no-lose for the K-1. They attract a wider audience and Sapp is unlikely to give up his K-1 meal ticket until he's ridden the wave as far as it will take him. The only problem would be offering the big fulla enough $$ to take the beating Tyson would give him! Actually, it would probably have to be a 'work' for that reason.

Just my thoughts anyway

...wouldn't be surprised for Tyson to take a dive if the money was right. He is after all bankrupt.

bankrupt is one thing on legal terms here but it does not mean tyson is broke.
he is a LLC and as one mike tyson the comp. maybe liable but the LLC protects him as a individual so don't be fooled.
And honestly do you think he'd fight for less than what he got on his last fight....what was it $10,000,000 or close, doe's anybody know??
would K-1 one pay him that????
Would he draw that much?
maybe?

I heard 15,000,000 for Mike and 1,000,000 for Bob Sapp...Bob is bigger than life in Japan!!! And Mike was compensated for being at the k-1 that's why he was so happy!!!!!

Mike Tyson will put Sapp to sleep faster as hell...

The money has to be very big, just to get Tyson to Vegas to watch the K-1 show. I mean, don’t try to tell me that Tyson was watching the event just for fun, or because he is a kickboxing fan. Kancho Ishii or someone high in the K-1 organization has paid Mike Tyson for being there, and for walking up in the ring talking bull with Bob in front of live TV.

Getting Tyson to fight a clown and C-level fighter like Bob the beast Sapp, will cost much more than Budweiser beer spent on commercial in primetime, at the NFL SuperBowl. We are talking big money, especially if the fight is talking place under K-1 rules in Japan. Tyson will have a handful of million US dollars just to step into the airplane to travel to Tokyo, steeping into the ring will cost double up - so this I will like to see before I believe it.

Boxing rules or K-1 rules, the first hook from Tyson to the body or chin, and Bob Sapp will fell pain so hard, that the punch CroCop gave him will fell like a soft kiss from Cinderella.

This is a very risky idea for K1 and for standup MA. If Sapp gives Tyson a beating then it will really raise the profile of K1. It will make the newspapers around the world.

However, if Tyson KO's Sapp then it will prove what western boxers have said about KB for years - use all the kicks and knees you want, cos we can beat you's just with our hands!

Iron Mike V Sapp

Ouch, ouch and well ouch!
Can't see past Tyson hammering this dude.
Would be great to see someone like Tyson in K1 would give it some excitement. Don't normally watch K1 that often but definately would if Tyson was appearing regularly.

Remember Mikey said 'under Marquis of Queesbury rules'.

It would be boxing, not K1.

Mikey also said he was retired.

Don't think it'll happen, but its fun to speculate!

And I can call him Mikey, my new best buddy - I got to hang with him in Vegas! Ok, about 2mins, and he was on medication - but at least I got a piccy with one of the greatest and most controversial fighters ever!
