Thanks everyone for the encouragement. We lost 3 fighters (2 A class, 1 female) due to severe injury/surgery; but credit USMF and Fairtex with still fielding a strong team. Captain Kwame knows what it takes to get it done and will be an asset in the corner. In 2004, the women finished 2nd to Finland (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) and several men won B class medals (3 bronze). Here's to repeating and building on that success!
JUNE 1st - Results (female)
Rima Sidu won a decision against Thailand.
Natalie Fuz lost a decision against Sweden.
Thanks for the pic, Pisand!
Best of luck to the whole TEAM USA!!! It's great to see Shawn fighting.
Peace.
Good luck to team USA bring it home CHOK DEE
Good Luck Team USA!! GO ERIC!!! KICK A$$! hehehe
We would like to document archive and
give all fighters credit for their
fights-but we simply can't when someone reports
something like this:
"I won my fight against "Norway", or I lost to "Khazikstan", etc..
I realize everyone is really pumped for their fight,
and are naturally very narrowly focused, but please try and
get an opponent's name if at all possible.
It really helps with accurate international ranking
when we have international fights to reference.
and this is the one great opportunity each year to get good
international ranking measurements.
Good luck to all,
dan
Team USA consists of 12 athletes, 6 officials, 3 media and about 6 supporters (family and friends of Team USA).
Fight result on Day 1 of Tournament:
Rima Sidhu vs Saichon Taichio (Thailand): Saichon took control of round one through her roundhouse kicks. Toward round two, Rima show great control in the clinch dominating Saichon. Round 3 was all Rima controlling the fight through clinches, kicks and punches. Rima is victorious by decision and move to round 2 elimination bout.
Natalie Fuz vs Pernilla Jonsson (Sweden): Pernilla came out very strong through her kick with cobra kai jab. In Round 2, Natalie came out circling Pernilla and was able to land punches to the head and strong leg kicks. Round 3 was Natalie’s round where she dominated landing solid kicks and punches. However it was not enough to win the fight. Pernilla of Sweden won the fight through points.
Matt Williams vs Shauk Halov (Russia): It was a classic David vs Golliath when comes to size. This was a tough fight since it was Matt’s first real amateur fight ever. Shauk is a professional fighter from Russia with over 60 fights. Needless to say, Shauk came in dominating all rounds by clinching, kneeing, and elbowing. For a first timer, Matt showed courage and the fighting spirit of NEVER GIVE UP, holding onto the fight to the very end. However, it was not enough, Shauk wins by points.
Eric Utsch vs Mudryk Andrit (Ukraine): This was a very close fight between Eric and Mudryk. Team Ukraine has won the World Cup Championship the past two years in the row. Regardless of this, Eric push forward challenging the Ukrainian medalist. Both fighters fought very well exchanging hands and kicks. The bout came to a decision which went to Mudryk of Ukraine.
Norman Valencerina vs Constantinosc (Cyprus): Norman came out very strong dominating his opponenent. Norman let go of his fists of fury to win the fight in round 3 by TKO. Norman advances to the next elimination bout. During the fight, Norman had kicked his opponent’s elbow which the doctor thinks he had fractured his front foot bone.
PS - Dan, often, as the Thai volunteers are putting the official information down for announcing, fight commentating and simply for the record, the names are written as the country, misspelled or completely butchered. Think of what we often do in the West when hearing a Thai name and phonetically spelling it. It takes some backtracking at the nerve center to garner more accurate information.
Go Norman! Hope the injury doesn't keep him from advancing. I've know this kid since he was a little tike and he's always been pretty athletic. For someone that's only done Muay Thai for 2 years, I knew he had a natural gift for it after watching his first Amt. fight. He'll go a long way if he sticks with it.
Good Luck to ALL The Fighters!
Have to say I thought Dan Ash was robbed yesterday, one of the best performances from the team I thought!
Not sure about the full results, supporting the team as much as I can outwith our own fights, but here is the current situation I think!
Amy Davis lost to Thailand yesterday.
Ali Casey is still in with a good win, can't remember against who, but she done well!
Jennifer Nguyen is still in to, it was a close fight with New Zealand, both girls punching really well, but Jen just the more busy fighter and more aggressive I thought.
Rima Sidhu is out, missed her last fight.
As I said, Dan Ash was robbed in my opinion, I missed the first round but everyone said it was all Dan's, but he is still smiling as always!
Not sure about Christina Martin.
Norman Valencerina had to pull out his fight due to his foot injury.
Natalie Fuz also had a dubious decision in my opinion on one of the first days, again I missed the first round or so, but thought she at least controlled the last 2 rounds!
Joseph Sampieri lost his bout, I missed this fight, but was told the other fighter really dominated the clinch, again the Vin Diesel lookalike is still smiling!
Eric Utsch (One of the funniest guys I've met on this trip!) lost his first fight, it was another really close one, but can't really comment as missed more than I saw!
Shawn Yarborough won my KO in the 3rd yesterday, to be honest it was looking like he would have to take the guy out, he was quite tense and not his normal self, but pulled it out when it mattered!
Matt Williams lost to a far taller opponent who new how to use his reach, Matt just couldn't match him at any range and fot a few DODGY stiches in the back of the head thanks to a downward elbow!
I'll try and keep you posted on how Ali, Jen and Shaun get on!
Ali Casey (USA) forced to stop in round #1 (shoulder disclocation) to Petra Janssen van Doorn (NL).
Christina Martin (USA) decsioned Adriana Sollberger (CH)
Christina fights for Gold!
Jennifer Nguyen (USA) lost a decision to Olga Ivanova (RU) and takes the bronze.
Ali Casey (USA) took the bronze as well in her division.
Christina won the final today and Shawn is in the final tomorrow against an English lad!
Christina Martin (USA) wins over Lisa Ostman-Sweden for the 63.5 GOLD!!!!!!!
She won the fight using all weapons, good straight knees, countering punches with elbows and landing good head kicks. Ostman is no pushover, the woman is tough as hell.
"Christina has to be one most coachable fighters out there, the young lady follows instructions perfectly!!
(Team Captain, Kwame Stephens)
Shawn did win a Gold in the B-class division.
congrats to all the fighters you guys must feel really proud to represent good job from all of us not lucky enough to be there.
@ Dan
