K-1 Kings of Oceania Round 3 Nov 18
With rounds 1 and 2 out of the way there is some interesting scenarios taking place.

Pool A has Peter Graham and Doug Viney both unbeatable in their group but Graham leads on points with 2 KOs giving him the extra bonus points totaling 6 points whilst Viney sits on 4 points. There meet in round 3 will be interesting. A win or loss on points will still have Graham leading the group as he has KOed the other 2 where viney has been victorious on points. Viney needs a KO victory to take Pool A.

Pool B is even more interesting Both Jason Suttie and Peter Sampson have had decision and TKO victories over there 2 previous opponents which has them both sitting on 5 points each, there meet in Round 3 will determine the winner of Pool B 100%

Pool C has been a mix and match pool with the withdrawls of McKinnon, Hepi and Te Rangi. The pool stands as follows.
Felise Leniu 3 Points
Chris Chrisopoulides 2 Points
Leamy Tato 2 Points
Leniu needs a victory over Tai to secure the pool in the event of Chrisopoulides and Tato,s result. Both Tato and Chrisopoulides need a KO Victory or a points victory if Leniu either wins by points or looses to Tai. Leniu needs a KO victory to guarentee his place in Pool 3.

Confused yet??? any way heres the confirmed match ups.

Peter Graham v Doug Viney
Jason Suttie v Peter Sampson
Andrew Peck v Matt Samoa
Reuben De Jong v Simi Tai
Felise Leniu v Daniel Tai
Chris Chrisopoulides v Leamy Tato
Jan Antolik v Aaron Boyes (80kg)
And other top bouts to be confirmed.

Hello Everyone

Pool C at the moment seems to favour the newcomers, and what an opportunity that is. Leniu dubbed the "FOB Father" should continue with his KO ways and extract maximum 3 points(should it happen), but the danger looms large with Daniel Tai who'll be wanting to hit back hard, and wanting the same. This bout will be an absolute brawl!!! Whichever way and whoever wins, Tai or Leniu...it will be a KO.

The Godzilla will be on full alert against a rampant "tyson" like Tato. He won't want to repeat what happened against Leniu. Unless Chris' gets a KO, going to be very hard for him to top the table. Godzilla is a class pro, and after Tato's impressive debut,he will only want to build on it. So all in all, the 3rd round has turned into something very interesting. We may very well see some of these new names, leave a firm marker and come out genuine contenders.

Jason and Peter.... I am expecting 3 rounds of technical exchanges, a bit of "chess" here. Be interesting to see whether this will be the main event? Dixon would you care to confirm pls. The "Psycho" fully deserves the honor of getting three back to back, main event fights all in the 2006 OCNA card. Wonderful!!! Fighter of the year 2006?, given that he has constantly battled injuries and odds stacked against him.

Not to mention the Matt Samoa V Andrew Peck, might very well be the fight of the night- both these guys will be pumped to leave a last impression on the calender. Carnage??? i am very sure, it will be explosive footwork from the Powerhouse against that kango hammer like over-hand right, which we haven't so far seen, from Matt Samoa. Predictions anyone????

P.S: Jan and Aaron set to keep up there busy schedules, and for Jan this would be the toughest examination?, against one of the best ring craftsman around. Wow.... Dixon, good on you. Card is looking mouth watering!!!

We wish all fighters an injury free build up....

Chok Dee!!!

Daniel Tai keep it very quiet but he had just got out of hospital the week before k1 with a kidney infection. He still had high blood pressure and was in no shape to fight. He has taken the loss hard and is already training for his next opponent.

Seriously, just jumping in the ring with a problem like that makes a champ.

Daniel has no need to be down about the loss. Too many times the glory of winning and the bringing down of a loss overshadows some of the true puglistic essence. Daniel took some shots and from where I was sitting those shots looked hard as hell. Yet, they didnt really do any real damage to Daniel, he weathered them. Sure he came up short in the end but lets not forget and actually realise there aint many fighters who can take shots like those. I like Rex's guy, he is new and got alot of pure aggression, he will be an exciting fighter for the future but he needs to work on his faking a bit, it looked a bit dangerous against someone crafty like Daniel. I will say that fight was one of the best of the night purely for the fact that Daniel could take those shots and the Porirua boy could throw solid, tight, Tyson like shots that hurt me just watching. The new guys has definitly got my attention.

Aaron, best of luck with round 3 and your fight brother.

Peter and Doug is a nice sounding fight and the main one of interest for next round. Andrew Peck and Matt Samoa is also an interesting one that looks like it depends on where the range is fought at. I like thse kind of fights. Hey, on that note, BIG UPS for Andrew after the last round. He looked in great shape and looked great in there too.

It s great 2 c the boys r gettin fights consistantly, how ever K1 must do something 2 insure the top tier fighters in Oceania r gettin world class fights more often......Cheif and Jason have locked horns on how many occasions yet r a class above, personally I d rather watch them fight in K1 then Sapp or Choi....It won t b long b4 we could lose them to PRIDE or another fighting organisation, non the less K1 prefers these fights to quality match ups.....all the best boys

I think K-1 has taken a much better direction this year... you cant say their Osaka show wasn't chock full of talent and great fights... as for Choi, anyone who takes LeBanner an extra round, who defeated Semmy (controversiall, but did well), and continues to step up against the best with only a handful of fights under his belt certainly cant be dubbed just a freakshow cos of his size. He has some solid skill.

Looking forward to final round of Oceania! Woohoo!

Big Kabosh,I was implying that the top fighters in Oceania are well over due to step another notch..Specifically Cheif,Jason,Slowinski and eventually Dougie simply because they are the elite in the Oceania region....I did not imply that the freaks such as Sapp and Choi were not crediable, all I was sayin was that Oceania s elite heavy weights are technically superior. You look at their credentials Cheif.WKBF World Champion and a great heavy weight boxer too,Jason,5 X World Champion and in 5 different weight divisions,Paul WMTC World Champion and probably the weakest of the bunch but he s that won threw to tokyo, how and why goes hand in hand with K1 s seedin system, and finally Dougie a Olympian in boxing and the former Oceania boss...in all honsety how can these men be left out for guys like Sapp and Choi....A here s a idea how about puttin on a super show in Australia with the afore mentioned Oceanaia fighter s taking on Choi,Sapp and two others...My moneys on the boys, simply cause they are better equiped and they have dreams, that are yet to be forefilled.......Super fight MARK HUNT and RAY SEFO II....Don Kings got nothing..Kabosh love yr commentary on fox and my regards to the hammer.......

Thanks Dangerous... and YES I AGREE... the boys deserve a crack... guess they will just have to win/impress at the Oceania GP in March to get the shot like Paul did.

well said dengerous butour big boys have been to japan and had a crack. slowinski won the gp that we had in nz and went on to fight in the top 16, graham fought remy, koed badi hari, and fought many other big names.
it would be great to see some of the big names like sap down this side of the world but the reality is, why would they come down here.we couldnt generate the hundred of thousands of dollars these guys get to fight.
dixon done a great job of bringing a round of the gp here though and put some huge names on the card.

Ki ora Rex and yeah u r right but in all reality our boys need fights regularly on the international scene, firstly to get that mental stimulation or conditioning and then to be able to test them selves against the worlds big guns....Been a former sparring partner of the big cheif and seeing how hard he works and watchin his desire deminish is sad bro,so what he signed a few too many contracts and had various organisations after him ,i put it down to youth full exuberance and a lack of contractual know how....As for Jason,my head strong Samoan brother who has the heart of a lion and would never give anything less then a 100%,and who i beleive would be a real threat if he was a natural heavy weight, would rather die then lose has proven time and time again that he is World class. As for Dougie I beleive once he has gotten rid of his ring rust and has had a few more fights he ll prove to be a real force in the K1 ranks in years to come.Other then Ray Sefo no one in the K1 ranks has single k.o power in either hand, like Dougie....With Lollo there he s a threat every time he steps in the ring.As for Paul Slowinski,no disrespect but either one of the afore mentioned could beat him and beat him easily...in closing i heard you had your birthday Rexy hope it was a good one bro and you left that rather large lookin sister with a mou alone, hahahaha

Hey Bugs

Nice to see you online again. We all kind of missed your comments.
Paul was optimistic when he spoke to me @ the last K-1. Which was good. So yeah I guess its upto Dixon now to work his magic and get him fighting. Who will it be? Big Pauli from ETK ... or the T MAN himself? It would be a spectacle alright.Unlikely to be the T-MAN.

Oh BTW bugs, give us some commentary on the next show... and i must say some of the debutants last time are looking very sharp. This 3rd and final round might be the best we would see for a while to come.My prediction more KO's to come!!!

Hey Dangerous... good analysis on the business(contractual) side of fighting. Having said that Dixon does bring that professionalism into the fight sport. That has a lot to do with how far and popular K-1 has become.

Rexy... hopefully Leamy is pounding away and will be in A+ shape for the fight against Godzilla. Good luck bro!!!

yeah Im with you boa.. With pauli in etk and a good team behind him I reckon the tman will get hammered, but then again he is a very unpredictable fighter, as for the last k1 here it was pathetic.. jason made simi look stupid, leamy fought a very unfit daniel tai, mat samoa is one big man and felise finished godzilla with the same punch samoa finished him off with a few years ago.. this is getting to be a joke like in japan... but good on k1 for coming here to nz. i might stay home and save my money this time. be good to see the next fights.

Hey Bugs...

LOL... OCNA's biggest critic is at it again with his scathing analysis.
Dont think think Hiriwa fights as much as he used to, more focus on his gym he's running. Plus T-MAN jnr is coming along, so i guess we will see him in a trainer/mentor role which is great. Would be awesome to see him back again though. One tough cookie that T-MAN,one of a kind.

Oh BTW Simi, Leamy and everyone else is in good shape. I reckon the upsets will continue, these guys want a piece of the big time. They will only turn into top grade pro's as time passes. So hold onto the thoughts for the moment.

Whilst BUGS will be not be the most popular critic, he will certainly be the biggest shit stirer. Good candidate for the Howard Stern show- you could spend the money on booking pink panther the movie on SKY BOX-OFFICE. Anyhow take care and stay well clear of Matt, Leamy and Simi...and oh yeah Mr Felise Leniu.

Update again. Paul Slowinski has since pulled from the Ustinov fight which has left us in a dillema as to an opponent fro Ustinov so heres how it is.
Chris Chrisopoulides has taken the fight against Ustinov which has allowd Steve Mckinnon to step back in the circuit. Steve will be fighting Leamy Tato. Paul Kingi will not be fighting a superfight which is unfortunate but none the less the card is strong.

Yet another intelligent comment from Bugs ...

Mate you've magaged to annoy Matt and Hiriwa with recent posts ... now you insult the entire fight card ... good work mate ... fyi your anonimity on a site like this is not as sacred as you may believe ... you should stick with being the funny wabbit and not the insulting everyone bro ... other wise Wiley Cyote might end up feasting on Wabbit stew ... lol

This is a public forum and regardless of what anyone thinks, bugs has a right to say whatever he likes wether anyone likes it or not.

Everyone else has the same rights in here.I dont agree with some of the things he puts down here but he does throw the cat amongst the pigeons and makes for entertaining reading and participation when all of you whom chastise him bite on his carrots that he distributes in the form of posts.

Love him or hate him,the fact remains that people like bugs are the reason that forums such as this survive and dont end up as................."Sorry we cant seem to find tha page".

As for the Oceania K1 this weekend go the vicious tongan, woooo what a fight thats gonna be.

Granted darkside - and my comments are a little tongue in check ... as I think the stew would taste a little bland and sinewy as bugs is too hornery ... but there still needs to be just a smatterring of respect for the fighters ... who deserve it ... going down the this an open forum road and we have the right to make comment is fine ... but that school of thought on its own also jsutifies someone say f..ck you suck and I have a right to say it so there! ... there's a little middle ground that Bugs loves to cross over at times ... most of the time he is funny and knows the game ... but recently he's managed to be fairly rude to the fighters them selves as opposed to making informed comment ... any way bring on the weekend

Hey Bugs

Good on you mate, keeping it like the Howard Stern show... LOL, freedom of speech is a great aspect of society be it foot in mouth or not.
Nothing interesting on TV this weekend i think, so better off at the K-1.
My prediction is at least 4 KO's!!!
Bugs if you are gonna be there, say hello to us and intorduce yourself. Who knows Pulp sport might have a spot for another host. None the less you do give us a laugh or two.

Will have a brief tomorrow from the press conference, which should be an interesting one.

Posted: 2006-11-16 13:04:35

Rumbles it wasnt me mate who bagged mark hunt, infact i liked him when he use to fight at the powerstation in auckland before he became who he is... and i can name quite a few who havnt taken a beating in k1, but i can name alot who have and even who will get one this weekend..

my predictions this weekend

felise leniu over daniel tai.. felise by power bombs over another unfit tai, if tai comes in very fit it could be a diferent story

rueben de jong over simi tai.. to big and too strong for the little man

suttie over sampson.. TIMMMMMMBERRRRRR here comes sampson

antolik draw boyes.. havnt seen antolik but i say a draw as boyes tough and will never give up

peck over samoa.. should be close but sluggish pecks thunder kicks and samoas earthquake punches, i just felt the earth shake samoa must be warming up

mckinnon over tatoo.. what can we say but mckinnon by knockout

ustinov over chrisopolidis.. just by his record above and chris weak jaw, but if chrisopolis can hold his ground like he did with musashi he could twist the fight his way

graham over viney.. as graham has been more active than viney but will be close with vineys new found hunger in K-1 again

anyone else with predictions for when i come and do my special commentry in the box with the 2 mikes.. it will be the mikeys and havoc show, boa i can only see one knockout on the cards

On a humid but windy afternoon, the K-1 kings of Oceania press conference had a very exciting feel to it. All the fighters were crammed in to a cosy room which was packed to capacity weren’t short of laughter, humour and aggression. Kind of like a well done soup as a starter before the main course. On that note…

Everyone seemed to be anxious to get in the ring and a few absentees who will be arriving later today from Australia. The highlight of the gathering was undoubtedly Peter “The Chief” Graham, blinged out to the max with the gold X chain, mouth grill with Diamonds and a gold Rolex Submariner watch to boot. Oh yeah, forgot to mention the cool shades and the red-retro Lionel Ritchie jacket. To go with it were some words full of praise to Doug “Vicious” Viney and some harsh words of warning to Paul Slowinski, who was obviously not present. After the pleasantries and referring to kiwi fighters as being too modest, he dug deep and swung hard at Slowinski and quote “He’s an arrogant F**c*…and needs to be beat”, there we go, and much to the delight of the crowd Dixon McIver promised Slowinski V Graham as a super fight for next years showdown. And Graham quipped that he may have to be arrested by the cops for murder after he’s done with Paul. Hmm, this guy sounds extremely fixated about winning and has a new-years wish list. One thing is for sure, the chief never fails to entertain, and he can back it up. Exactly what the press conference needed, the star appeal and the attitude of Donald Trump.

Anyhow everyone else showed each other loads, I mean truck loads of respect. Jason Suttie added to the stern menu of words and laid down his intent to stop the rising star of K-1 NZ, Peter Sampson. This will be the real test for the punishers up against arguably-pound for pound the best K1 fighter in the scene. “I am real fired up and want to show everyone once and for all….”, when quizzed by the big kabosh on the hype about Sampson. Jason looks set to take the pool and he strode off in his awesome Harley Davidson sportster.

Jan Antholik and Aaron Boyes were an epitome of the spirit of NZ K-1 and paid each other the best compliments possible, however I sense it is only the calm before the storm. Respect or not, once in the ring it will be absolute mayhem and I sense this one going the whole nine yards, not to mention some bruising blows. Jan is in for the fight of his life, no doubt. The bomber if he finds the radar early enough with a right, could see a quick finish. Jan is class and will be up to it… too close to call.

Who did I miss…. Of course, how blind would I be if I didn’t mention the Russian man-mountain Ustinov. I was a midgetised standing next to this guy and big Chris the Godzilla will surely have his work cut out for him. He is one big monster and has the sense of humour to match (much thanks to my Russian interpreter, the lovely Yana). Something of interest is that he is an ex-police commando from Moscow. Good thing cops here aren’t all that big.

The Powerhouse Andrew peck was looking super sharp and dressed for the occasion, and I sense something special from him- a blue dress shirt with a gold tie assures his confidence, along with the 6”10 Rueben De Jong who promised lots of leg work and a few “surprises”, and added that it “would be nice to go out after the fight, as opposed to go home with an ice pack”, surely the quote of the day. Furthermore as usual the rest of the fighters were content on saying few words as possible and doing the talk tomorrow in the ring.

Mr Dixon McIver made a very promising announcement by saying kiwi K-1 fighters now have the opportunity to fight in the Moscow leg next year and long overdue shot at the world stage. Fantastic!!! So K-1 please take note, another OCNA K-1 GP champ is not far away from beckoning. Kabolicous!!! The Kiwi amalgamation with the Russian connection could prove to be a pivot, and finally we could see more of OCNA on the world stage regularly.

So folks, let tomorrow night come and I have no doubt we will see a very interesting show worth savouring. My gut feel is that some of the lesser known fighters will take the major honours, and people who have written them off will have to take off their blinkers. How ironic would that be, indeed… Irony can be very ironic. Just like how if the Kiwis make it to the tri-nations final and win it.

Word to bugs… despite the highly gargantrous and comical (but none the less entertaining) commentary, your predictions look probable. I guess only tomorrow will tell, and it will come for sure.

Good luck to everyone and make sure you get in early. I will have some rather interesting photo(s) or two later on. So stay tuned in…

great fights. is the no leg holding a recent rule? i seem to remember you could hold and punch, but only once then you had to let go. this new rule seems ridiculous, it seems like k-1 is trying more and more to turn it back into a karate event.

On a day where the weather was see-saw, and with a start to the Saturday full of gloom, after darkness there must come out the light. We witnessed which was arguably one of the best K-1 shows for sometime, and I would assume sometime to come. Without further due a brief run down...

Fight 1: Daniel “Hitman” Tai Won Vs Felise “FOB Father” Leniu – Majority Dec.

The opening tussle had the makings of two evenly matched brick and tile state houses. Leniu started by controlling centre ring and Tai circling round the ropes. Tai with his kicks and Felise with rockling fists. Tai piled up the points with some effective rib kicks, Leniu struggled a tad with punches which weren’t well timed. In the second Tai gave the fob father a nasty combo of punches which opened the drip in his nose. Smart fight by Tai who worked his opponent cunningly. Dissapointing for Leniu who could have promised so much.

Fight 2: Reuben De Jong Won Vs Simi Tai TKO : Did not answer bell for 3rd

Simi Tai seemed to have learned the first three chapters from Jason Sutties fighting manual, and mirrored a similar stance and game plan. And as he worked the giant around opened a cut on his nose and followed with some nice front thigh kicks. Having said that strangely in the second Simi played Rope-a-dope and took a hammering on his front thigh, and it turned purple in a hurry. And wolla…. He didn’t answer the bell. Disappointing end for the manawatu man, and redemption for the nearly 7 foot monster. Simi in my opinion would be very unlikely to see K-1 action again. Deserving win for the humble giant.

Fight 3: Peter Sampson WonVs Jason Suttie Majority dec.

Strolling to the ring to the track “Sunshine in the music” by Kool and the gand, Suttie got the crowd revving. Oh yeah!!! And not to mention the eye-balling and strolling around the ring …woah
Round one saw Sampson pull out the full range of his karate kicks and Jason work his body, with fast four combos of punches. Sampson used his longer reach to better effect and connected with his teep (push-kicks). Suttie was trying very hard to get in, and on 2 occasions connected with over hand rights. In the third the tempo was upped and the Punisher used the ropes to good effect and made points with his leg work. Desperate to get in to it, Suttie opened up and swung toe to toe. And on the final bell, Sampson sealed the fight with a beautiful high kick to Drop the veteran and pick up the majority win. Are we seeing a change of the guard? Perhaps I speak to pre-maturely. Upset of the night. Wild card is now the only hope for Psycho, who admitted who had an off night.

Fight 4 Super Fight: Jan Antholik Vs Aaron Boyes

In a Napolean V Wellington like dual, both these ring scientists were repeatedly warned for catching kicks under K-1 rules, and amidst the warnings what broke out in the middle was a cracker of a super fight. Both guys traded clinical punch-kick combos and the veteran was unfortunately cut with a late high kick, and a point deducted from Atomic man. The bombers approach was brutal with his leg work and showed the guts of a tiger. Both guys traded some clinical but brutal kicks and in the end the fight lived up to its billing as a super fight. Aarons guts which was written on Jans ribs (not to mention the technique) got him the majority win. What a fight!!!
Aaron showed the fitness of a refreshed and well prep’d pro. Kids take note.

Fight 5: Andrew Peck Won Vs Matt Samoa TKO Leg kicks

A relaxed and smiling Samoa as usual, as opposed to a motoring and fired up Powerhouse stormed his way to the ring, with signs of his former physique (abs and all) With the bell Peck made his intentions clear and unloaded with some solid punch kick combos and the claret was visible on Samoa early on, who was his usual casual self. Coupled with the inability to check, he went down for 3 separate counts inside the first 2 rounds were chopped down in typical Powerhouse style. Simply awesome!!!. Samoa just couldn’t break his duck and Andrew landed some vicious leg kicks, possibly 30 plus. Yes people, Peck is “Fu***n*-back!!!” Good show man and you have well and truly defied your critics, including myself- I admit.

Fight 6: Leamy tato Won Vs. Steve McKinnon KO Punches, thunderbolts

With Rex the Rumble Redden in his corner the big ex-league player (with a heavily strapped shin) was up against the “smooth” sailing, movie star like McKinnon, with brother Stu in his corner. Anyhow… whilst the battle in the ring was about to brew, so was the ringside battle for eagles eye view by the photographers. (LOL….)
Steve started with his usual kicking game but got caught by a storming combo of handy work by Tato, which was reminiscent of clubber Lang and got an early count. Due his inexperience and not retiring to the neutral corner, it gave Smooth the grace he needed and probably cost the quickest KO of the night. Holy heck!!! I witnessed the making of a new champion brawler, with Tyson like grit and the eye of the tiger one of the best Muay Thai fighters in the scene was rocked, cropped and dropped like a hot potato. Those left and right hooks could destroy a mammoth. Steve did make a brief comeback was that was all smashed to bits. Watchout for this guy with the sinister black trunks and one who fights like an angry doorman, and fears no one.
Warning : do not trade toe to toe with this man.

Fight 7: Alexander Ustinov Won Vs Chris Chrisopoulides KO Left Hook

With the Russian community being a significant majority in Auckland tonite the giant 6”10 champ made his way to the rapturous applause and biggest cheer of the night, bar the pervious Laemy KO. Godzilla was focussed as, probably sensing his career on the line.
In one of the most vicious AND BULLY-BOY LIKE KO’s, Ustinovs left flattened the Godzilla and the ref immediately called it quits. He systematically harassed and brought a swift end to the super-fight and (probably Godzilla’s great career). The crowd went ape sh**!!! And broke into shattering glass like applause, shrill whistles and chants. It was like little Moscow. Chris protested the KO but obviously he was jaded (as he did last time round with Leniu), or should I say pole-waxed. K-1 take note, Alexander the great is coming. Perhaps he will have Choi, Bob Sapp and king kong in his sight. Good candidate for a Peter Jackson movie, maybe when he does David and Goliath.

Fight 8: Main event Doug Viney Won Vs Peter Graham Unanimous

Despite the early stumble while entering the ring (a possible bad omen), the Chief found his feet early on in the fight but Dougie returned fire with some beautiful kick punch combos and had the better of the exchanges. Peter looked a bit worried and was a tad shaken. Doug was looking delicious and firing fast and furious. Dougs left kept finding the target of Peter face and the chief couldn’t get inside. Viney was continually making the points and the Chief only answered with knees to ribs and a few sharp punches which hit his opponent.
The crowd was at a boiling point and in a magical third, the chief high-light reel style brought out rolling thunder which sort of connected on Vineys Neck but he displayed a granite chin and the roof was taken off the stadium. What a fight. Doug was a bit gassed and Peter had a few reserves, but it didn’t matter as Dougs superior handy work got him the unanimous dec. What a show, and a disappointed chief would miss out on the final. Fight of the night and lived to the billing of the main event. With this win Doug wagered the support of the entire stadium and a fair few fillies in the crowd. Good for him and NZ K-1. I repeat, fight of the night and fighter of the night. His comeback is now complete.

Well, well, well my prediction of the 4 KO’s have come right and we could see the change of guard in the OCNA K-1 scene. With both Suttie and Graham missing out, and there places taken by Tato, Sampson and the comeback kid (or should I say king) Doug Viney: we are indeed seeing a transformation. Perhaps I may have spoken too soon, it is only an observation which will have to be proven over time with hard evidence. Only time will tell, and that time will be next summer. Long live K-1!!!

Thanks to Dixon and co. for the excellent media facilities and I enjoyed the sushi-rolls. They were yummy as, and the Fast Fours Ring girls who were equally yummy looking much to the delight of an appreciative crowd.

Hey Darkside

On the night Leamy was the hungrier and he seemed to listen to his corner. On the two ocassions Steve dropped his right, he let rip with that kango hammer left and flattened him. That was the difference and i think he was out to prove a point, and leave a marker on the K-1 stage. Steve be it at his present weight, or another 10 KG heavier has the tools of destruction against anyone. To his misfortune Leamy came prep'd and did his homework after his last fight in Wellington, and knew when to get out of range and take the shot when the opening came. Thats how I saw it. To Rexy's credit, Cornering is an art and his tactics came handy for sure. Note: Jason Suttie's corner had a huge absentee in the wonderful Roger Earps. All these factoids count at this level, where the margin for error is very thin and often harshly unforgiving.

leamys weight was 98kg for that fight and that was walk around weight.
steve fought well with his kicks but was still groggy from being caught early in the first with that left hook.steve is still a champion fighter and should have a few fights at 95kg to get hold of his new found weight.he is still a hell of a force to be reckoned with guys.

whats the difference with weight look what kowklai did to mighty mo and what jason did on his way up through to the heavyweights taking world titles in every division darkside i think, steve cant help he has cross eyes and was probably looking at 2 lemons coming at him and if steve was in the last k1 he could have won his pool, so really he did lemons a favor and boa what a pity roger wasnt there or my prediction could be right

yeah that first left won the fight, it was only a matter of time i reckon till the second one would catch up,mkinnon might have the technique, but damn that leamys got some raw power! farrk, he shit himself after that first knockdown!

Lightning Mike Angove

Steve's a great fighter but Lemy exploited his tendency to expose himself a little on attack ... the first left hook caught him cold and he did well to get up from that ... the KO right hand caught Steve cold coming in doubles the impact and their was no coming back ... Steves style has been to walk through many fighters as his own weight but as he goes up the power ratio has changed and he just needs to readjust the game plan and learn a little more patience as well as sharpening the defensive and counter attacking side of his game. He will come back with a vengence as all great fighters do.

Remember Jason Suttie in his first step up against Hiriwa - he was KO'd, Sefo got Stopped by Enrnesto, Enrensto's step up into the Heavyweught game had a few KO losses too ... Nathan Carnage Corbett was Knocked out by a Canadian at Heavy weight a couple of months back and Paul Slowinski was KO'd by Mitch Ohello when he moved up... this isn't the end for Steve its the beginning.

thanks for your comments people i am enlightened and speaking of mitch ohello i remember when he fought the Tman and pummeled him all over the ring for 8 rounds in a shceduled 10 round kickboxing fight in australia.Tman was getting smashed solid and you could hear the cries "stop the fight".

Tman was down 2 or 3 times during the fight then out of nowhere he comes back and knocks mitch out in the 8th.
I am very fortunate to have this tape ,By far the best comeback i have ever seen in all combat sports which is a big call

Very inspiring Tman the Kiwi destroyer back in those days. you gotta see it to believe it

this was in todays dominion post.
article.

LEAMY TATO pauses at the door to Rex Redden's Porirua gym and looks up at the massive poster of himself that spans the wall behind the newly installed boxing ring.

Tattooed arms folded, biceps bulging, face staunch, ``Tyson Tato'' is dubbed one of the new stars of K1's Kings of Oceania series.

As he examines the poster, it's hard to tell whether Tato is basking in his recent success or puzzling over how his sporting career has twisted and turned its way to a kickboxing gym on the edge of Onepoto Domain.

It's a bit of both.

In the space of three months and three whirlwind fights, the 32-year-old has gone from a relatively unknown former rugby league player with one amateur bout and two professional fights under his belt, to a rising K1 star _ posters and all.

ntsGOne hundred fight veterannte Daniel Tai, a 100-fight veteran, former Kiwi muay-Thai champion Charlie Smiler, and last Friday night, Australia's former world cruiserweight champion Steve McKinnon, have all fallen victims to Tato's thunderous blows.

A place against Oceania and Asia's best in K1's grand prix in March is secure and the door ajar to bigger fights, bigger pay days and bigger posters.

But Tato's story runs far deeper than just three short fights.

Born and bred in Porirua, he's been chasing a professional sporting career since he left Bishop Viard Leg 1College in 1993. A junior Kiwi that year, his dream was to play in the NRL, and by the end of a tour of Great Britain and France he had a three-year contract with the Manly Sea Eagles in Sydney.

The solidly built back made an immediate impact first in the Manly under-21s, then the reserve grade and, in his final year, the premier team.

But while things were going to plan on the field, off the field it was a different story.

He was lonely, homesick for his family, friends and girlfriend (now fiancee) Sharon Maoate, who remained back in Porirua.

``My family were here, my missus. It was hard because none of them could move over to Sydney. I took it hard and I ended up coming back,'' Tato says, his disappointment with himself still evident 13 years on.

``I asked Manly for leave and they granted it on the condition that I go back and train at the end of the New Zealand season. But I was back in Porirua with the family and I was happy again, so I never went back.''

It's a decision he has regretted ever since, but kickboxing has given him a chance to put the past where it belongs. ``I'm doing all of this for my family,'' he says, as his eight-year-old son, Dorian, races past chasing his little brother, Nasser, 4.

``This is the best way I know how. I always looked at sport as a way to make some money. I stuffed up with the league and I regretted it later, not going back to Manly when I should have.

``When this [K1] came along it was like a second chance. I thought I'm going to take it.''

So far Tato has taken it with both hands, or more accurately both fists and both feet.

His timing is perfect. In the wake of long-time star Samoan Mark Hunt's retirement and Ray Sefo entering the twilight of his career, K1's promoters have been searching for a new Polynesian star.

In Tato they have found a marketable product, launching him as a kickboxer in the mould of former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson.

``They call him `Tyson Tato' because he's a replica in the ring,'' says former world kickboxing champion Redden, Tato's coach and mentor. ``He punches the same way, stalks his opponent the same way and finishes them off the same way. It's like a spitting image.

``K1 love him because the crowd loves seeing the smaller guys fight the big giants. He's fighting guys who are 110-145kg, 6'8'', 6'9''. Leamy's about 100kg, 178cm. He could make some huge money.''

Tato admits he's still coming to terms with his sudden emergence in K1 and the associated hype of live TV audiences and big name opponents.

``Sharon usually keeps me calm, but at the last event I went up by myself and I was a wreck. They were hyping this guy [McKinnon] up, talking him up like 28 fights and 25 KOs, and I was thinking, `What have I got myself into?'

``I rang Sharon the night before and told her she had to come up here... as soon as she arrived I was sweet, I felt strong again.''

McKinnon lasted two rounds before hitting the canvas, sending Tato into an eight-man tournament next year that will include Oceania and Asia's four top fighters respectively. Not bad for a guy who stumbled across kickboxing after several years in limbo playing club rugby for Northern United.

``It was the end of the season in 2003 and all the boys were getting into the off-season training, but I was bored with rugby training. I'd been doing it hard-out for 10 years."

``I was going for a run in Porirua and I ran past this kickboxing club and that's where it all started, really.

``I just walked in and thought I'd have a few goes on the bags. Then I thought that I may as well do it for the off-season training [for rugby].''

Inside the gym that night was Redden. He recognised Tato's talent immediately and suggested he ``give it a go''.

That proved a challenge in itself.

``All through 2004 we couldn't find anyone to fight because there's just no heavyweights here,'' Tato said.

``It was never our intention to go straight into the K1, we were trying to find guys of my experience, but there just wasn't anyone around.''

He finally got his first amateur fight in 2005 and hasn't looked back.

``I had no training, no nothing and he had about 20 fights. Even though I lost on points, I thought, `Hey, I quite like this'.''

``It was the adrenaline. I have always been a physical person. In rugby was a back, trapped in a forward's body. When I played rugby coaches were always saying, stop running so straight, try and swerve around people, stuff like that.

``In league I was a centre/wing playing like a prop. Now in kickboxing, again I'm short compared to these other fellas, but I love the physical nature of it.''

One thing he's still unsure about is the comparison to Tyson.

``Hopefully they are talking about his early days and in the ring.

``That's flattering but, as I said on TV, there are heaps of Mike Tysons down here in Porirua. I'm just a product of that.

``There's heaps of talent here, but I'm the only one who wants to train this hard. If you relax in that ring you are going to take a pounding. I realised that and that's why Rex, and [trainer] Mike [May] push me to my limits. ''

Hey Rexy

Nice to see the mainstream press or should I say "Borad(er) sheet" news print writing about the K-1 and rising stars. Encouraging to see such interest, wonderful!!!

And to Leamy... nothing like the thrill of the fight and the adrenaline. But i'm sure most educated crtic of the forum Bugs has something to say. LOL

Good work Rexy, you got the PR machine rolling. When K-1 moves to the windy capital it'll be "Tyson mania"? i guess. I suppose the proof will be in the pudding (or should i say KFC...)

Not rubbing salt in any wounds.

I liked what Lightening Mike said during the commentary.

Last I knew Mark was taking on another fight with Hero's or Pride. Maybe in the USA. I cant see him leaving the ring yet, he has too much heart beat.

Bugs, bro, lighten up a little mate.

The rabbit calicivirus, which causes rabbit calicivirus disease RCD, also known as Rabbit Calicivirus Disease and previously as Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease, RHD), is a candidate biocontrol agent for rabbits. The disease, which was first noted in China in 1984, occurs naturally and is currently reported to be effectively controlling rabbits in some parts of Europe - most notably in Spain.
