I am a former FC fighter, but I have switched to pro boxing and will have my first fight December 1st. I know of a few but are there any other kickboxers who have switched to boxing/vice versa?
The ones I know are:
Vitali Klitschko
Carl Thompson
Damon Hague
Matt Skelton
Trev Tacey
Ricky Hatton started as a kickboxer dint he?
Jonny Thaxton
Andy Lowe
Pele Reid
Hatton never fought or anything just went along to a couple of classes when he was a kid. Benn never kick-boxed, he started out with Lau Gar kung fu under Neville Wray.
Look in hattons biog and there is a picture of him thaiboxing as a kid.(fightng not training)
im pretty sure benn was a champion at some level of kickboxing... also nazeem used to come down and have a knock about with us and was a big fan of authur o'loughlin naz loved the points ideas and aproach to landing shots at off balance angles and the no guard show boating we used to do was actualy a nice kid back in the day cant vouch for him now tho been over 15 years lots have changed,
but back on the subject great kickboxers should make a very easy transition into boxing however it is the most fixed sport be careful you will be used as a journey man to give some up coming fighter a punch bag seen it happen over and over if your face doesnt fit not got a prayer local to me is inlge, rhodes, and coldwel good trainers and promoters trust me the game is rigged to fuck... oh as always if your a ticket seller you will get easy fights if not train hard fight easy, the boxing society is a very cold place compared to warmth and comradery that there is in the martial arts world, but there is the bigger recognition i had my chance could have done it anytime but saw how others had been treated my good friends fred an martin from pro am yorkshire who are big figures in the aba's gave me good advice but hey its your sport your training if your passionate about your move keep your chin low and your spirits high and battle through.... oh and most importantly sell the tickets to get treated like you exist... lol
best of luck yours in sport meeeeeeeeeee!!!
Trevor Ambrose
Kevin Morton
Bertil queeley
Nigel Benn did kick boxing and so did Ricky Hatton(thai Boxing)
Jeph Loeb(USA)
Tim Sale(USA)
The Harrison Brothers
James Warring(USA)
Peter Manfredo as a jnr(USA)
Dragon foot............spot on!!
Nigel Benn kicked boxwd for a few years before joining the Army that's where his Boxing career tookoff. As Dragonfoot said the kickboxers get used as journey man example used for the likes of Amir Khan (his first pro fight) and a few later on. Matt Skelton has done really well Hope that he can beat ~ The A Force Audley Harrison.
Mr Paul Newby former K10 champion, top man all round!
cheers mark boxing has had its day... MMA rules the roost bores the tits off me like but the paying public no nothing of skill and class all they want to see is a knock out and a bit of blood, MMA is like the fast food of contact sport in and out knock em out... near naked sweaty men rubbing up on each other and rubbing their ball sacks in each others face isnt my idea of entertainment but elton john always on the front row...lol serioulsy i appreciate its a hard sport but if i had my time over and had the options of carreer change cage fighting is were the home town legends are being created... never mind kickboxer, boxer, soldier tell them your a cage fighter they shit there pants....
but kickboxer is what i started and were i will finish not got one regret...
Mr Craig Burke, K1 fighter karate champion, trained by the great Big H form Sheffield! now theres a real boxing figure!
eh craig burke... nice lad would have had it all in kickboxing his first fight was under me in weston stuart should have some footage, K1 not for him he would have been very well respected in kickboxing and world champion by now big as fuck and power in kicks christ i fealt guilty for the assault happening to the other guy but boxing cant see it, got a big punch but his head not there...
Jon Thanxton
Graham McGrath
Danny Norton
Sam Soliman
Danny Green
Paul Briggs
Jasom De Lisle
older school.................
Khaosai Galaxy
Troy Dorsey
Howard Brown
Ronnie Green
Rick Roufus
Peter Cunningham
Mark Prince
Baby Doll Riley and Lucia Rijker to add a few big named females.
Personally, I see boxing as a brother to Thai boxing. Many of the top Thai fighters aim for boxing also. Somrak, Samart and even Kaoklai for example have all boxed (Kaoklai amatuer but Pan Asian champ). To many fighters there is a goal for conventional boxing due to the pay days involved too.
Troy Dorsey!!!
that is old school Niel remember the tape"fights of the century"(from Bernards shop) where he fought Graham Mc...........oh jees the blackcountry bomber
ah Graham mcgrah,Graham tried boxing aswell.
Jan Cree, Cathy Brown, Terry Butwell Jr, Gunther Roomes, Mark Elwood,
Chill John, Julius Francis, Gary McAllister, The Klitchos!
Pretty sure Ricky hatton's invovlement was junior and minor, no big influence on his boxing now at all I would say having read his book.
Lee, Nigel Benn did kickbox and I have seen the video of his win over Pat O'Keefe. A fight that proved one thing, Pat is one tough guy. Stood up to everything Benn threw at him.
Benn was with at the time a guy called Alan Davis. Alan was one of best blokes I ever met in Martial Arts. An Ishinryu guy under Ticky Donavan who opened his eyes to other things, so I met him doing Wing Chun, he introduced me and lots of others another time to Silat and the last time I saw him he was teaching Tai Chi. A proper Martial Artist and good guy. He died about 7 years ago and it's a shame more don't know of him. A bit off thread I know but worth mentioning.
Others for the list:
Chris Long..still active
Steve Russell
Howard Jackson (No longer with us)
Eric Regan (just lost to Sergio Moya from Contender)
Dave Clarke, still active, fought matt skelton early as a boxer
Ramon Dekker also turned pro boxing then went back to Thai Boxing
I think Graham McGrath more than tried boxing ,He had
over 100 pro fights and that was on top of the 80 plus kickboxing
and thaiboxing fights he`d already had.
Trevor Tacey
Mark Halewood
Elvis Parsly
Roy Rutherford
Scot Welsh
Ok, so more specifically, which former kickboxers have succeeded in the boxing world?
troy dorsey, a proper world boxing and kickboxing champ
Hughie Ford and Michael Armstrong both won British super featherweight
title and Dean Phillips did well in his boxing career.
Wahid Fats caused a bit of a stir after switching codes when he knocked people out with (never seen in boxing before)jumping punches.
And lets not forget current world class middlewieght Aussie
Sam Soliman and also John Wayne Parr.
Don't forget JWP and Don Wilson
>>>> that is old school Niel remember the tape"fights of the century"(from Bernards shop) where he fought Graham Mc...........oh jees the blackcountry bomber

Chris Okoh went from boxing to kickboxing! So did Coco Collins
Paul Brigs
Tassis Petrides
George Katsimpas
Micheal Gomez
Ricky Hatton had 5 Thaiboxing fights junior level 2W 3L !!! When his gym closed down were he trained he went to search for another gym & went to Sale West to train under Pele & Lisa but chose the wrong night & Am boxing was on with coach Mr Paul Dunne the rest as they say is history.
What was George Katsimpas kickboxing record like? He fought on a show I was at recently, powerful guy!
George didnt have many fights as a kickboxer but fought at a high level from the off.
John Orchard stopped him in 2 rounds but he beat the likes of Darren Forrest, Steve Primrose (I think) and Genna Tkachenka
He beat Cello Renda at the show I saw him at, I think he is 4-0 now.
Mike Nevitt is currently IKF World Lightheavyweight Kickboxing Champion
with a pro boxing record of 12-0. Fights again this Friday.
Cicero, Illinoius USA.
