dicks victory over kaoponlek
Michael Dicks last weekend took a hard fought victory over kaoponlek in Lignano italy.
Tragically for Dicks the victory was soured by the MC announcing the win to kaoponlek, but once the judges score cards were inspected the correct decision was enforced it was smiles all round. Scores 10/8 9/10 9/10 10/9 10/9 Dicks.
There is a link I can post showing the whole fight without editing and hope to post it shortly.
just befoe the link goes up its worth mentioning my personal thoughts are that the round one score was unjustified. I cannot see any justification to score the first round like that but then i was'nt the judge.
the fight was very close and i had anticipated a draw. but certainly kaoponlek did'nt win.
Well done to Michael,Paul and all the team at Darlington Boxing and Martial Arts gym.
Thats one helluva scalp for Micheal and Darlington Gym.
Is he the only UK fighter to have beaten Kaoponglek so far?
Great result , Well done Michael and the Darlington team- Paul and co.
im struggling to put up the link. ive asked dan green to link it. hold on tight

I take it a string of ? marks is a snide dig at the result once you had watched the fight. Im not sure its warranted frankly but its your choice.
Personally having watched it again I am wanting to say a draw. tragically a draw is often lazy judging but I feel can also be a just statement "did either man deserve to lose?" or "either do enough to win?"
and for sure if we disregard the overly generous rnd1 score from the head judge it adds up to a draw, disregarding the emphasis placed upon later rounds.
I know that the mc announcing a pre determined result before checking the scorecards was poor form. Always nice to get the decision on camera eh? but like Juk and Damian Trainer mistakes happen.
and before this rolls out into a opinion poll of who thinks what. Michael Dicks fights for Paul Hamilton. give paul a call if you have any constructive critism or opinions to discuss.

No! Kaoponglek is a legend, win lose draw not important, i was ??? as confused about the whole result announcement as they raised Kaopongleks hand are you saying the promoter overturned a judge who has overturned it back to Michaels favour?
Soz pal. with ya.
yeh it was very confusing. and for michael disapointing. shit happens.

R4 - Even
R5 - Dicks
This is just my observation.. How did you see it?

for my two penneth I had a round a piece and three even with michael edging them by initiatiing the exchange. which in the absence of any other scoring criteria could sway the judges view of the action. I believe the italian judging panel did consider this an element. I repeat for me a draw with note to michael being the aggressor.
Well, if we're posting scores...sorry to be the unpopular one.
50-47 Kaoponglek.

there really seem to be at least on AX and perhaps in UK two factions...proper Thai scoring and "fight" scoring based on aggression. Effective aggression accounts for 70% of the wholistic score, only 10% on raw aggression as I've been told in thailand and by mentors...in the UK. Michael was aggressor, but Kaoponglek was the more effective.
and there in lies the subjective factor. the word effect. if body shots that landed upon target that michael is seen to disregard then for sure kaoponlek "scored". as for being unpopular because you offered your opinion i must say i doubt it. there are three judges for a fight and potentially all may have a different view and opinion, whilst not ideal it is possible. I disagree with your scores. but so what? its a subjective art.
what i would say is in the fourth or is it the fifth? without checking i cant recall now michael hooks kaoponlek who drops his guard and walks off to clear his head. And I know that Kaoponlek had three cuts. deep deep cuts requiring ten stitches. Mind you michael had five of his own ha ha
I still go with a draw. Which is less favourable than the judges score cards on the night. And also its worth noting that its easy to score with a freeze frame, fast forward facility at your disposal.
and i did say aggression is not a scoring criteria. But that michael initiated the exchanges. And that in the absense of any other contributing elements might? thats might!? be considered by the judges.
I just watched it again and feel michael had control of the pace. measured against the techniques from kaoponlek a draw seems an honest assesment.
I scored it :

I watch realtime, Dave, for "rescoring" these close contests. As close to live as possible. There is indeed a subjective factor. I love Kaoponglek. LOL. But I really do respect and admire Michael Dicks...first time I saw him fight, Guy Ramsay told me, the man feels no pain. And in every fight I've seen someone who should be dubbed the Wooden Man #2 after Jongsanan. He's hard for sure. Has a no-nonsense forward moving, wrecking machine approach. But in this case, I still award to Kaoponglek.
To quote TonyM: "Judges should be attempting to award a fight to the most effective boxer in Muaythai terms. Most translations of the rules include some suggestion that techniques should be strong to score. The issue is how judges should make an assessment of a strong technique (or one with power). If judges only made an assessment of power from the actions of the boxer who delivers the blow they have only a range of very subjective cues to make that assessment, and the agreement of observers can be quite low when only using those cues. However, if judges assess the effect of the technique they have much more easily agreed upon cues with which to make their assessment. These cues include moving an opponent or causing them to lose balance or show pain."
Michael doesn't show pain, but does lose balance and position here, and as debated in his points loss to the Thai (blanks on name) earlier this year, that was another extremely entertaining and close fight with the same arguments.
its a good job you fuckers were'nt there judging eh? ha ha.
it was a great scrap in which the score cards went michaels way. i do think its unproductive to analyse every result to abstraction. and wanted the world to know about michaels win. not solicit opinion. but then thats the danger of an open forum.
Sorry I posted before reading your post. good points
fair score brian..... but showing that you gave the edge to kaoponglek in round 2 and round 3 would be a justified means of giving round 3 a 10-9 in favour of kaoponglek ;) round 5 looked close on a 10-10 but the later part of the round the kicks unanswered from kaoponglek would have resulted the round a 10-9... excellent fight and all credit to michael always marching forward always great to watch ...
