Southpaw Kids Training Orthadox.
It has come to my attention that all left handed kids while training in my classes find it hard to pick-up tecniques while in there natural southpaw stance but when i change them to an orthadox stance they find it really easy to pick up tecnique and feel really comfortable staying in a right handed stance and eventually become quite natural at orthadox but are very left handed in everything else they do.
How many other trainers find this the same???
Very interesting - I am curious to hear more peoples thoughts..
I haven't noticed this but I may have missed - typically left newbies I get going left handed...
Anyone else?
theres a young boy in our gym whos right handed and left footed. hes started using orthadox stance but when sparring he just kicks off the front foot being his strongest leg and doesnt use his right much at all unless told to. whats the thoughts should he go south paw and use his strongest leg to its best or orthadox?
Even my 7yr old Daughter & 11yr old Son are left handed but find it really hard doing anything in a Southpaw stance but can do everything really good & natural from an Orthadox Stance. I also have 3 other kids in my classes that are the same & i have also had others in the past ?????
batey1983,im the exact same, left footed and right handed.my nephew is left handed and right footed but its never hindered us in any way.tell the kid just to practice left hook right body kick and youll be amazed at how quickly he'll adapt.my right kickin is probably more powerful than my left now.as for keith(my nephew)hes now the stba 63.5kg champ and is probably the best switch hitter ive seen.was u get used to doing things that were alien to u it can bcom a major advantage.

Watch people and study it i,m a southpaw and i did and trained a few Dean wilson was my 1st champion he was a southpaw too x
Most novice right handers wanna have their right foot forward. Its natural. Betta to give them time to get used to a southpaw style. Brendan Ingle swears by having the strongest arm as the lead though as do some other boxing coaches. Does adding kicks change things? I think strongest side to the back is best tho.
i personally would do simple combination jab, cross, roll, cross, hook then next combination jab, cross, back leg round kick... do both combinations from southpaw and orthadox and see where the body looks more natural... POWER, TECHNIQUE, BALANCE whatever looks more comfortable for the fighter then adapt from there :)
Styles make fights :) I personally would work kids both stance is all especially if fighter only kicks off one leg encourage the change ;)
Right or left foot forward... what is natural? (or already ingrained)
To see what is natural have new student (if trained already then not necessarily accurate - also consider other sports/work that could influence) stand with feet together, go behind him and push him and see which foot steps forward.
Got this from talking with snow boarders for seeing which foot to put forward. makes total sense to me...
That said you can train either way for any combination
i am a left handed orthodox! its good that ur strong hand is at the front but u need to really work on the right hand for good fast power shots!!
I teach all students to be able to use the basic offensive and defensive techniques in both stances. Unlike Boxers, Kickboxer and Thai Boxers are always going to find themselves landing in the opersite stance at some time in a fight so need the basics in that stance to keep safe until they can create the space to switch back. Bruce Lee always taught to have your dominate/strongest hand in front but self defence is a total different thing to competitive combat sports. A typical street fight lasts about 20 to 30 seconds, so does not compare to fighting a minimum of 3x2minute rounds. I understand that forcing children to use their non-dominate hand for everything is actually a damaging thing. Many left handers were forced to write with their right hand at school up until about the 1970's but this practice was stopped as it was showen to be damaging to their development.
