I just thought id bring this thread to the top ;)
All the names mentioned on this thread were good and great fighters who all would do sooo well fighting in todays era,in particular I think Steve Holt was a great fighter as was Peter Hopkins, another quality lad not mentioned is Thomas Ncarthy(Toddo) anyone remember him? agree?.:)
My opinion these guys were not near the level of the modern uk guys. Mainly tough guys with kick boxing style fighting under muay Thai rules
This is the gold era of mt
by a mile jonno! the quality of coaches and fighters through out the country is way stronger than then, then there were 3-4 guys that were muay thai "masters" and very few gyms but now there are loads of credible peope that have trained with high class thais coaching here in the uk taking the level up loads
I agree with your last post Paul, however all of the fighters mentioned above from previous eras would be the equal of todays fighters given the same training and following the same ruleset.
As a fighter and coach from that era and this era I had fighters then that could compete now Im 100% sure of that,In fact I had fighters compete In Thailand in the early 1990s as Did many other coaches.
Our main problem was the ruleset we followed meant we had to train the technique that was scoring over here ie low kick and punches with bog standard clinch.
These are the areas that have improved the most recently over here I think(reffs, judges and rule format)mainly due to Mr Tony Myers and the people that have followed his good work, also the opportunities to train and fight regularly in Thailand have meant our standard of actual Muay Thai rule format has risen loads,so yehh I agree the golden age is now but stick the old timers in todays gyms and they would still be champions imho.:)
Agree totally mate but they didn't have the same opportunities in that day! They were good at what they did but it was real correct muayThai as we play today
I was wondering how long it was gonna be before someone decided to point out that just because it's back in 'Nam, doesn't make it "The Golden Age". As Paul says, virtually everyone of these guys couldn't compete with the fighters of the same weight class today.
Anybody wanna do the Rocky Balboa thing and see how a computer will predict a fight between an oldie and a current champ? how about Sandy in his prime versus Liam. I know who I'm betting on :-)
Ok we all know what that outcome would have been and i think it is a very unfair comparison!!!
Ronnie Green however, didnt he used to beat the Thais regularly? Also what about the likes of Pele Nathan and Winston Walker?
How's it an unfair comparison? Wasn't Sandy the best at his weight class at the time? Think so. Is he the guy who called "the Golden Age"? Think so.
In fact it seems like a completely relevant comparison.
wasnt comparing them just the humble beginnings as to how we are where we are !
The wheel had to be invented ! wood at the start then improved with Rubber but its still a Wheel and still works !!!!!!!! :-) x
Paulinthailand Writes:

I believe Steve Holt,PeterHopkins and Pele Nathan would still be best in the country now at 67,70,72.
Taking whatever into concideration.
i dont think they would mate. i dont know of peter hopkins. pele was very good but wouldnt he have been waklings weight? i dont think steve holt is nearly as good as jordan at that weight!
"virtually everyone of these guys couldn't compete with the fighters of the same weight class today"
Would not entirely agree with that! Some of the fighters where very skilled and many turned pro boxing too !!
However... I think some of the names mentioned where exceptional in their time and these days there are more of the same skill level - But certainly not able to compete is a gross miscalculation.
hummmmmmmmmmmm not too sure
But that said It will Never happen and we can have this same discussion ( in 20 years and say the same lol )
Lets say this
This was thee Golden Age.
Now its the Platinum lol
