Fight report and aftermath
The Balmoral promo had a few early setbacks with many a fighter pulling out last minute due to injury. This left Lollo Helimuli in a dilemma and last minute adjustments. But all credit to him, BLG put on a show to excite with fighters stepping in @ absolute eleventh hour notice. ROGUE and fight fans hail their commitment.
The cold winters night was one to remember as Hori "The Soldier Belass", did what he said he wanted to do. Become a wolrd champion. So thats one more to add to the house of champions. Well done Hori! Kia Kaha.
The Match report
Fight 1 :
In the opening cruiserweight clash Pat Afoa a fast up and coming hardy youngster from ETK got the better with a clear points win over Highlanders Jerryu Tewhau who took the fight at short notice. Pat did have a bit of blood on his nose and well done Jerry for going the distance. Decent Opener.
Fight 2:
Jonah's gym fighter Mike Russ sporting a Fu Man Chu beard took on BLG Tono Tusaui, who took out Mikes front thigh and piled on some punishing points. The heavy boys entertained, one Clear winner. Well done!!!
Fight 3:
The next exhibition fight was a peach. The juniors from BLG PJ Heem and Sam Hutton showed some of the seniors about foot work, and landing combos and moving away. These kids will go all the way, I have no doubt. We should be proud of such quality and technique (moreover the heart) shown by these kids. 10/10. Muay Thai was the winner!!!
Fight 4 : The fight of the night
Cruiserweight newcomers Sivarn Hermez from ETK and BLG' Taytum Hutton went blow for blow. They traded, shook off some meaty blows and kicks to the face. The crowd rose to their feet, and it was entertainment. Both fighter went the distance with the BLG fighter getting the judges call. Taytum landed a flush shin to the face but lacked the experience to finish Sivarn off, despite frantic calls to push forward by his corner. Great fight.
Fight 5:
The fiesty womens lightweights of Lauren Pringle from BLG and Debbie Griffith form Marty Taranaki, was a classic. Both women showed great technique and Lauren who got the split points dec. loved the clinch and grapple. She got some telling knees, ahead of a peach of a teep (push kick) and some nice thigh kicks by Debbie. Well done girls!!!
Fight 6:
ETK' big boy and debutant Paula Lakai went head to head with Ben Reinsfield of Rotorua Freestyle. Both showed plenty of enthusiasm, and Ben got the points early up and eventually the match on a split dec. He opened a nice little shiner on the bottom of Paulas left eye. ROGUE learnt later on that it was actually a draw. Some confusion exists on the dec. Will clarify shortly. Not the most entertaining fight.
Fight 7:
Vini the Hurricane Mahoni took on Charles Smiler who didnt have much to smile last night. Vinni completely dominated and won a clean, crisp fight. He is the fighter who impressed me the most and his step to heavy should give other fighters something to think about. Great ring craft and nice tech. He piled on the points and Charley tried his best to put a brave face on, and went the distance. One way traffic.
Fight 8:
Exhibition was re-defined. Shannon Foreman and Simon the Spike Chamberlain reminded me of Michael Owen and David Beckham trying Muay Thai. Big ups to them for filling up the fight card and which ever way the crowd got a fight, well something like that. Spikes hair was spikey, Toni and guy?
Well done gents!!!
Main Event:
Big Glen Sewell from Australia (defending WMC World champ) who took the fight at short notice with a flue stricken Hori "The Soldier" Belass under full thai rules, went the distance of five rounds. Four out of five were hard to separate, and probably in the fourth Hori did slightly better in the clinch. Some big knees and good repeat combos did the scoring. The ring couldnt hold them, literally with both of them having near misses on tossing them self over. Hori and Glen both traded some meaty front thigh kicks but my biggest disappointment was not seeing a single elbow. Glen was graceful in defeat and Lollo paid a glowing tribute to him, "at this level it takes time to prepare and well done and thanks Glen, for taking the fight at such short notice..."
Glen said "i have no excuses although it was short notice....well done to Hori on his win...". Both fighters showed professionalism and it was nice to see them acknowledge a warm crowd. Hori said he wanted to be World champ before the fight and he did it. " I am really happy i won, and want to thank my trainer and fans". When ROGUE asked him what next, and maybe a K-1 debut, he said " Its upto my trainer now, i just want to keep fighting" Good job Hori. NZ is proud of you.
It would be a tough proposition to contain a 100% fit Hori Belass. He did BLG and a gym ROGUE know very well in Thailand proud, Sasipara. He wore the red and gold trim with the BLG in front and the Sasipara at the back. He did them proud and especially Lollo, on a fantastic event and produced yet another champ. "I am proud of Hori, especially that he was in bed with the flue last 2 days..."
Await the complete works and edgy side to the show on ROGUE Magazine coming to a stand near you in AUGUST!!!!
Cheers and thanks
