just thought id drop a thread on after a converstaion last night in the gym ...... basically it revolved around the importance of breathing out ! seems daft but its amazing how many students / fighters panic and concentrate that much on getting air in they dissregard the importance of empying their lungs properly !

LOL...... Your right! Many forget to exhale completely the air from their lungs which is very important!

with a short hard exhale there is a reflexive tightening of abdominal musculature

make some noise it helps

If your core is functioning properly it will be supporting your shoulders and hips, meaning your punches and kicks etc will be stronger...

If getting hit - well thats an easy one to figure out

I read about a breathing technique to be used when you are trying to catch your breath during strenuous exercise. It's where you tighten the mouth and restrict airflow and then exhale really hard so it makes a noise. The result (supposedly) is a build-up of pressure in the lungs which causes the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange to be more efficient. I dunno what exactly is going on, but I've tried this technique a number of times when I exercised until I felt out of breath and it did feel like I was able to recover my breathing really quickly after that and get my "second wind".

I've seen something similar used in Yoga.

Yeah, I also remember having a breakthrough with my endurance when I learned of the importance of exhaling completely. Exhaling well is so vital.
