KaOs Professional MuayThai Fight Gala
Saturday, October 16, 2010
Calgary, Canada
On Saturday October 16th, Mike Miles with the assistance of CAKMA (Calgary Amateur Kickboxing & MuayThai Association) promoted KaOs Professional MuayThai Gala. The event featured 2 title fights and was designed to raise funds for the children's charity 'Little Warriors'. This charity deals with sexual abuse of children and the education of.
"The upper case letters in the show name was to highlight "KO" for Little Warriors. I am not sure how well the concept worked as some people asked me why I spelled chaos wrong! Ha ha", said Mike Miles. "The show went very well, though people were late in arriving, after a few bouts the place was full!" Considering we were up against the UFC, home town NHL hockey featuring Calgary against Edmonton (a rivalry as old as the cities themselves), an Ernesto Hoost seminar, and about a dozen more events, I think the show did very well!
Main Event:
WKL PROFESSIONAL WORLD MIDDLE WEIGHT MUAYTHAI TITLE
Jesse Miles (Canada) 11, 1, 0 vs. Juan Chacon (Spain) 50, 8, 2
This was a very important bout for both athletes. Miles who had just come back from fighting at the SportAccord Combat Games in Beijing, China was now given a chance to add some hardware to his professional profile. Chacon too, having won the WKL European Title wanted to bring the World Title belt back home with him to Spain. The bout started off with a few probes by each other to test the other's defense. Mid way through the round, the pace had quickened as each athlete had presumably found out what they needed to know and were now content on
trying to hit and not get hit. As the pace quickened Miles delivered a left hook which wobbled Chacon. Trying to capitalize, Miles attempted a spinning elbow and while doing so took an elbow to the top of his head from Chacon which created a small cut. Round two had Miles stepping up the pace with Chacon fighting back but having difficulty scoring on his opponent. In this round Miles again started landing some solid shots, with Chacon's blows slightly off target. In the third round Chacon seemed to catch a second wind and he started off very aggressively. He tried to force Miles into exchanging with him.
With Chacon coming in, Miles delivered a beautiful elbow which caught Chacon on the forehead and opened a large cut. Seeing this Miles tried to capitalize with a jumping elbow and right after, a jumping knee which narrowly missed it's mark. In the fourth round, Chacon was still trying to force Miles to get into exchanging with him and though he was not succeesful in luring Miles in, he was still in the game. In the final round, Miles picked up the pace substantially, and between fakes, picked away at Chacon from every angle scoring lots of kicks and punches. This served to confuse Chacon. Miles would throw his hands and when Chacon would answer, Miles would not be there. At the end of the bout, Jesse Miles was unanimously given the win and is the new WKL Professional Middleweight MuayThai Champion of the world.
Semi Main Event:
PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL FULL MUAYTHAI PRESTIGE MATCH
Sandra Bastian (Canada) 2, 0, 0 vs. Catarina Valerio (Portugal) 4, 4, 0
Bastian has had a somewhat frustrating year in regards to keeping busy as an athlete, but she scored a credible opponent in Valerio for this event. Valerio is coached by retired World Champion Dina Pedro of Portugal. Bastian had always talked about fighting Pedro but with that option now closed, fighting her student was the next best thing. The bout opened and immediately the contrast between both styles was very apparent. Bastian moved very relaxed a la Thai style while Valerio took to her bicycle and moved and danced around the ring trying to avoid the corners and moreso avoid fighting close with Bastian. In the first round, both athletes probed with shots and neither scored convincingly. What was apparent was that Valerio knew of Bastian's skill in the clinch and Valerio used everything she could to try and get the clinch separated. In the second round Bastian became a little more aggressive and though she was not scoring with a high percentage of her shots, this round further pushed Bastian into needing the clinch to dominate and win the bout. In the third Bastian started breaking through Valerio's clinch guard and Valerio did everything she could to try and avoid knees to the face. In the fourth round, Bastian managed to score some knees to Valerio's face. In the final round, Bastian opened up and started landing some good knees in the clinch and over powered Valerio. Valerio gave a valiant effort and tried to fight on the outside but few of the blows scored and the ones that did, carried little authority. Sandra Bastian was declared winner by unanaimous decision.
CANADIAN AMATEUR SUPERLIGHTWEIGHT MUAYTHAI TITLE / TEAM CANADA
ELIMINATION MATCH
Hakeem Dawodu (Calgary/Miles) vs. Rob Xoumphonphakdy (Toronto/Yodkeripauprai)
In September, Hakeem Dawodu had qualified to represent Canada at the 2010 IFMA World MuayThai Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. Dawodu defeated Red Deer's Sean Enright and then matched up in the evening against Calgary's John Hamm (who was given a bye and was well rested for the final bout). Dawodu won this bout as well. At the KaOs event, Dawodu vs. Xoumphonphakdy was set up as Rob had wanted to enter the Team Canada Trials. Unfortunately for Rob, a few problems occurred and he could not make the trials. In the spirit of friendship and competition, Dawodu offered a match to Rob and if Rob was to win, he would have taken Dawodu's place on Team Canada for the prestigious event. Rob and his coach Ajahn Suchart accepted and were very appreciative of the opportunity. The bout opened and Rob attacked with a low kick which was blocked by Dawodu's knee which brought a grimace across Rob's face. Midway through the first round, Rob was dropped and given a standing eight count. Rob continued with his attacks trying to find an opening. Dawodu maintained a very calm demeanor through the first round and none of Rob's attacks got through. In the second round Dawodu picked up the pace, and started landing some very good shots. Mid way through the round Dawodu, dropped Rob with a good shot and though Rob made the count, he could not continue giving Dawodu
the win and the belt. Congratulations to the new Canadian Superlightweight MuayThai Champion Hakeem Dawodu. Dawodu looks forward to fighting at the IFMA World's in Thailand and then in the new year is considering turning professional at 140 lbs. Dawodu claims he has his sights set on a fighter already.
FULL MUAYTHAI BOUT
Peter Arbeau (Calgary/Miles) vs. Ruel Copeland (Toronto/Yodkeripauprai)
As was the case with the Dawodu/Xoumphonphakdy bout, this bout was also offered in the spirit of friendship and competition to Copeland by the original Team Canada winner Lindsay Rae. Copeland had won a silver medal at the 2009 IFMA World Championships in Bangkok. Copeland too was unable to attend the trials this year as well and in respect for his achievement last year, Rae offered this bout. Two days before the KaOs event, Rae had caught the flu and on the day before the event had to withdraw from the bout. Ajahn Suchart returned the spirit of competition and accepted the replacement Peter Arbeau for the bout. So in fairness to both athletes, they both had one day of preparation for their prospective opponents. Copeland has not been as active in the last year as he would have liked and Arbeau was coming off a knock out loss to Troy Sheridan. During this bout Copeland was to work on getting rid of a little bit of ring rust while Arbeau was to 'test' the waters. In this bout Copeland was to press while Arbeau was to move, hit (not dancing but more countering), and score. Arbeau looked somewhat nervous and Copeland looked a little frustrated as he just did not seem to be able to pull the trigger like he wanted. Regardless of both athletes not being 100% on their game, both gave a very entertaining account of themselves. At the end of the bout, Arbeau was to win the decision unanimously.
FULL MUAYTHAI RULES BOUT
Mark MacKinnon (Calgary/Miles) vs. Deaglan Davidson (Toronoto/Yorkeripauprai)
These two were both game on fighting. During the bout, MacKinnon looked good on the outside using good timing to keep Davidson off balance with well placed kicks. The Toronto native kept trying to press but was having a hard time scoring effectively. Of interest during the clinches MacKinnon delivered some excellent elbows to the body. This surprised Davidson and everyone in the audience. MacKinnon kept looking for the big right hand which fell short due to trajectory and Davidson not wanting to get hit. The bout was an unanimous decision for MacKinnon who now looks at fighting Anson Pops for a Title in November.
MODIFIED MUAYTHAI BOUT
Max Carruthers (Calgary/Miles) vs. TJ Dubas (Red Deer/Cheney)
This was the opening bout of the evening. Carruthers stepped into the ring for his first amateur fight and Dubas stepped in for his seventh. This bout was fought under modified MuayThai rules (no elbow attacks and no knee attacks to the head) while both athletes had to wear full gear (head gear and shin pads). In the opening round Carruthers looked very much out of his element. He shelled and protected behind his arms and seemed to have trouble settling down through his nerves. In the second and third round, Carruthers seemed to find his feet and he started fighting back effectively. At the end of the bout, Carruthers was given the decision unanimously.
EXHIBITION MODIFIED MUAYTHAI BOUT
Alana Dunbrack (Calgary/Miles) vs. Teri Treiber (Red Deer/Cheney)
Dunbrack was originally set to fight Spain's Sarai Guerrero. During her travels to Canada, the Spanish girl was stopped in London, England along with the coach. A problem was discovered with the coach. Things escalated and the Spanish girl decided against travelling any further to Canada. Dunbrack is a small woman and finding her competition has been very tough. Her opponent at the Team Canada Trials did not attend and the result was Dunbrack not having a fight there as well. Desperate for some fight work, props go to Mr. Lyle Cheney who offered up Treiber as an opponent to work with. There was a large weight and height difference for Treiber but the bout still was very entertaining. Dunbrack showed increased skill in the speed and technique department. Hats off to both girls stepping up at the last minute. Big respect to Teri Treiber and coach Lyle Cheney.
Mike Miles would like to thank his team of top trainers... Kru Scott Clark, Kru Erik Lollike and Kru Gun. So much appreciation to you all.
The next event takes place on November 6th, 2010. It is called New Gladiators 5. This is a small card featuring 1 Canadian Title fight, several other fights and a few smoker fights. The next BIG event promoted by Mike Miles will be in January, 2011. Negotiations are on with a few other professional MuayThai athletes from Canada as well as a team from the former Soviet bloc. 2 major seminars are coming up as well. Stay tuned.
