Yes we switched to an annual Tournament Championships in 2010, after running a bi-monthly circuit for 6 years.
Tournaments have a more 'K-1' feel to them, as there could be two, four or eight contesting a division title with Quarter-Final bouts, Semi-Finals and then Finals. It can be a little more exciting than 'Challeng' bouts ( 1-vs-1 ).
The A.K.A. Kickboxing circuit completed 36 shows every eight weeks, without break, during its time! Some going when you think about it!
A lot of Pro's on the circuit gained or expanded their experience with the A.K.A.
As for disclosing Amateur experience, I agree it should always be shared with match makers. I also believe Inter-Club / Sparring Days should be listed as Amateur ( Amateur 'D' Class for Draw decision bouts ).
Still, this is what AX is good for. Usually you can find out background on a fighter from this forum from postings ( and pics ) of results.
I don't think many of last years A.K.A. Champions have competed Pro. Those from my school have not switched codes.
Thanks,
Neil.
thanks neil i sent you a email too but just realised you had answerd this d'oh ...

Peter Fellows:
Most amateur sports people pay to compete as the amateur game is not really a spectator sport, but a participant sport. Of course, this has event costs that need to be covered. Ringhire, Referees, Medical Team, Venue Hire, D.J. etc... all charge the same for their time, wether it is for an Amateur show with 100 spectators/participants or a Professional show with 1'000 spectators and table sponsors.
On this event, Competitors are allowed £ 5.00 per ticket sale in commision, so they only need to sell five tickets to pay for their expenses.
Is a cup half empty or half full?
What I mean by this, is that it is common practise in the Pro. Game for Promoters to only match fighters who sell tickets.
Most promoters will want a fighter on their show to sell 'X' amount of tickets, then they give back to the Pro. fighter some of his ticket sales as purse/expenses and use the rest of the money to pay for the event costs. In effect if a Pro. fighter sells 20 tickets at £25.00 = £ 500.00 and gets back in return £150.00 by way of purse and expenses, he has in effect paid £ 350.00 fee to the promoter in order to compete ( promoter pay event costs ).
I have known many Pro. fighters not get the matches they deserve, as they cannot sell the tickets / ie cannot pay the event costs. In effect a Pro. fighter who is required to sell 'X' amount of tickets to compete - is paying to compete.
Is a cup half empty or half full?
Also, if there was government sponsorship for Amateur Kickboxing, I can assure you there would be no entry fees. Unfortunately there is not, and whilst there are students out there that would like to be able to compete on a low key event, rather than at a professional level, organsing such an event is more of a support gesture than a business venture!
Food for thought, I had two students recently pay £30.00 to compete in a hell run event. No trophy, just running over a muddy / hilly forest course. How many were on this hell run? over 2'000 entries!
Not many spectators though!
:)
Neil
I have been to many of these events and they are awesome.
Well organised and the atmosphere is superb.
Can't wait for this one, it's always that bit more special when it's local !
See you there folks
The Golden Buddha
The club from WhiteField seem to be doing really well! Who is the instructor?
Farhad:
Hi Farhad,
The school from Whitefield is coached by Richard Lewis, part of Master Skens association.
The students are always very technical, and well prepared - fitness wise.
Many keep active on Inter-club / sparring days, and the A.K.A. bouts are a perfect step up from this.
I have contact details if you would like them.

Hi neil
i think you forgot to tell people that, if they win the belt they have to pay £200 to take it home??
i understand that you have to pay entrance fee, but last year, charging people £200 was a bit silly. these belts only cost 40-60 dollers from online.
kam_boxer :
The Amateur ranks are run differently to the Professional ranks, as most people know and accept. For example...
In the Pro. code, you would not expect to pay to compete - but in fact be paid. NOT SO WITH THE AMATEURS.
In the Pro. code you would not expect to pay for your flights and accomodation expenses when competing abroad - NOT SO WITH THE AMATEURS.
This Amateur event is an open tournament, with 30 divisions possibly being contested. Due to the Amateur event having such a small budget when compared to a Professional show, it is obviously not possible to sanction 30 title belts. Even a Pro. Show could not cover that sort of costs.
Therefore this event has Medals, Gold-Silver-Bronze. Last year the association members asked if there could be an option for a Champion to purchase a title belt also - and this was arranged, as it will also be this year.
I have domestic and international organised Professional and Amateur Thai-Kickboxing events longer than a lot of people who post on AX have even trained!
On the Pro. events I have promoted some of the biggest names out there. Fighting on my shows have been the likes of Hudders, Keddle, Matthews, Brown, Roye, Cadden, Howsen, Trainor, Airlie-James, Chu, James, Jose....
Never are there negative posts made when I do a Pro. Show as people understand the game.
Yet when I organise an Amateur event, everyones a critic!
Amateur is not Professional, so do approach it like it is.
I can assure you that if I wanted to make money I would be organising a Pro. Show. It takes just as much time to do - and therefore should give the same returns, yet it absolutely does not.
So when someone 'PICKS UP' on '£££'s and thinks - Neil Holden, BAD GUY, you might want to give it some deeper consideration, because I am certainly not organising an Amateur show to make money!
However I do intend for it to cover its running costs, as any sensible promoter would, be it a Pro. or an Amateur event.
I have said it many times, if there was government sponsorship - then it would be different.
Regarding the title belts... The A.K.A. has never charged £200.00 for a Title belt. Also, the cost of manufacturing a belt, then needs additional costs added such as, custom badging, carriage, sanction fee.
Also, there are in fact some Pro. Thai-Kickboxing associations also charge for their title belts. It is a sign of the times economically, that event costs have to be trimmed where possible.
£10.00 to Spar on Interclubs in a gym with no rent, no medical team etc....
£20.00 for 'children' to compete in national championships - and their parents then have to pay to watch!!
Two things to remember...
Not many things in life are FREE!
Don't view the Amateur code, as you would the Pro. Game.

.....The titles are sanctioned through the I.K.F. with Bronze, Silver and Gold medals . Division winners also have the option of an official title belt......
Thanks,
Neil
thank you for reply. but i have txt msg on my phone from you last year which clearly states, the winner can take home the belt but will cost £200. if you want when i find my old phone i will forward you the text which you can read your self.
Really? That is interesting, as too is your identity and the gym you represent.
Yes please text me - 07973 43 18 18.
Neil
Hmmmmm O.K. no text.
Not to worry if you cannot find it.
The actualitiy is that optional title belts are available for division champions as this is a tournament with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, as stated at the opening of the thread and on the A.K.A. website.
If a winner would like to buy one, they may, as several chose to last year, although some were more than happy with the medals which were of the highest quality.
I can tell you that seeing product costings in 'dollars online' does not always carry over to the U.K. as simply as some people strangely imagine - and I am sure there are no official I.K.F. title belts costing $40.00 - $60.00. even at www.ikfkickboxing.com
I am interested as to what you think you would charge people, to help cover the costs of an adult amateur show?
I am also interested as to what you think the costs are to cover such an event with ABSOLUTELY EVERY COST taken into account?
Neil
Cyber Bullies!
Why is it that when I am involved in organising Pro. Thai-Kickboxing shows like the recent one Dan Green and I did at the Parr Hall featuring Dean James, Craig Jose and Simon Chu in international bouts etc..... There is no negativity on ax!!!!
Then when I organise an Amateur event, people feel the need to post negative comments on the thread - for NO OTHER REASON than to dissuade people who maybe considering participating.
What suprises me, even more is that people feel so strongly that they have to go out of their way and even register a false email address, to then register a false name on ax, to then ....post a comment!!
Incredible really - and quite sad!!!
There are kickboxing formats out there that I am not a fan of. If I see a thread on Full-Contact American Kickboxing, I simply pass it by. Same too with Draw-Decision Muaythai Interclubs-sparring days. I don't even read it, and I certainly don't critic it, or those involved.
At the end of the day - it is a free world, and on the whole a lot of the different formats feed fighters into other formats, as their skill sets or confidence improves.
For example, I was speaking only yesterday with Steve Logan - an associate I have worked with for over 15 years, and probrably one of the most respected and successful Muaythai coaches in the country. He was saying he strongly felt, without a doubt, that the A.K.A. format over the years had been very successful in helping to prepare his fighters for the step up to the Pro. division.
I post this, merely as a counter balance to negative postings.
There is quite an impressive list of Pro. fighters that over the years have competed in A.K.A. bouts or even won A.K.A. titles! Yet 'trolls' and 'cyber bullies' never seem to acknowledge this - or are that ignorant to the sport that they did not know this.
Yesterday in my gym, a member was asking about getting tickets to watch Gavin Rogerson, and also about going to watch Dave Kopestake and Nathan Epps. All great fighters to watch!
Amazingly, from just one conversation alone, you have three people who have A.K.A. Amateurs experience on their resume - headlining on Pro. Muaythai events.
With that in mind - hopefully the trolls will go back in their hole, and we can leave the negative posts off line.
If you don't like me, or just don't like the A.K.A. format or how it is financed, ( as there are no negative posts when I do a Pro. show ), then pass the thread by, or contact me directly like a man!

How much are the aka title belts please?
Just_love_kickboxing!
As I have already explained, this is a tournament championships, with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.
A winner of a 'GOLD MEDAL' is recognised with the title of being a 'CHAMPION', just as someone that wins a 'BELT' in a challenge bout ( 1 vs 1 ) is also recognised with the title of being a 'CHAMPION'.
There are potentially 30 divisions open, therefore it is not possible to have 30 belts due to costings. With this in mind, at least years championships A.K.A. members asked if there could be the 'option' of a title belt as well as a medal for the champions.
As organisers we arranged this for those divison Champions that asked us, and we are doing the same this year.
Why should this be a problem for someone posting on AX without their identity?
The official cost of championship title belts, ( sanction and shipping ) are listed on the website, and are pretty much inline with many other organisations ( I have santioned WAKO and ISKA in the past ).
Should we get a large amount of requests, then we will be able to negotiate discounts. With that in mind, I could not give a price on what an optional title belt would cost a gold medalist this year, until after the event and we have the numbers.
Checkout the website, www.aka-england.org
Menu options are on the left side of the page, see
"Medals and championships belts".
I am sure you will find out all of the information that you want.
Neil
neil...no way did i mean to be a cyber bully or troll as you say.
and if it sounds like i am trying to put yr show down, then i am sorry as that was not my intention.
i strongly recommend people enter your competetion as it is very good, well run. good warm up areas, excellent entrances including dj and even fit ring girls! anybody stepping up from interclub level this is highly recommended. and the show is a big improvement and class from the ones you used to put on every 2-3 months, this is alot more high class/ professional feel.
i no way meant to put you, or your show or any1 off to entering your show. i simply was saying that charging so much for a championship belt was too much, and did not agree with charging so much.
Kam_boxer,
It is the usual practise for trolls to register with a false name, or 'handle', and then post negative comments or comments to try and make a person look bad. As I could not find Kam-boxer posting on any other threads, for me this flagged you as a potential troll.
If someone has an opinion on something, they can simply contact me directly - especially if they have my mobile text message number.
I would like to say, thank you for your latest post, and at that I accept that you are not intentionally trolling.
You have posted some very complimentary comments on last years event, even saying that you felt that the 2010 Tournament Championships was better than previous A.K.A. events.
Well when you consider that the entry fee had been reduced by almost 20% from £30.00 to £25.00, a drastic cut in the working capital, and that many things these days actually cost more than they did years previous, maybe we are not doing such a bad job!
Please accept my appology,
Neil
Thanks for the reminder... Ring Girls booked!
:)
Neil
Yes the Girls are booked!
Even more incentive for the guys to win!!
i agree they are good shows i av competed in one of these a few years back and i can say they are exellent and well run
Hi Leroy
Thanks for your comments.
Which gym were you competing out of?
Leeroy:
Cheers for that!
If you are looking to step up, from Gym 'Interclub' (Sparring Days) Draw-decision bouts, yet looking for a middle ground before going Pro. on a large venue, the A.K.A. is a great testing ground.
1.
You have the opportunity to experience the pressure from the fact that there are decisions instead of automatic draw-decision ( or non-decision )contests.
2.
You compete at an actual venue, rather than just in a gym.
3.
You compete compete in a competition sized ring, instead of a floor ring or small training ring as used at most interclub ( sparring day ) events.
4.
There is an official medical and weight check, again something that can be quite worrying for a novice competitor, and the experience will lift this worry should they purse Pro. bouts at a later date.
5.
Ring entrances, Ring Girls, M.C's - all things that a novice competitor can de-sensitise to due to gaining the experience before competing Pro.
6.
There are opportunities to compete for prestigious titles, co-sanctioned by the International Kickboxing Federation ( www.ikfkickboxing.com ) one of the worlds leading authories on Thai-Kickboxing, be it in either a Grandprix Tournament format, or a straight Challenge-Match.
7.
Both competitors are fully armoured, in matching colours according to their corner.
# This may not seem like a big deal to some, but for others presentation is very important ( there is no need for amateur Thai-Kickboxing events to be portrayed below the standards aspired to, as standard, by other sports ). Checkout the many hundreds of photos from A.K.A. Amateur Kickboxing events on AX!
8.
There is an additional safety element, due to the scoring criteria - which is similar to the 'Olympic Style Rules' of Boxing - whereby should a competitor be trailing on points ( due to poor defence and taking too many hits), and he is clearly being outclassed, a contest is stopped!
# Not everyones cup of tea, just as some people do not like Amateur Olympic boxing, however there are a lot of people that the format appeals to.
So....
Last few days...
Are you an Amateur O.S.R. ( Oriental Style Rules / K-1 ) Kickboxer!
Do you regularly compete on Thai-Kickboxing Interclub-Sparring days or Amateur fight nights?
Format - Oriental Rules :
Kicks ( including holding knee-kicks )
Boxing ( including spin-back-fist )
Limited clinch-holding-defence of 3 seconds!
No Sweeps, No throws, No overhook / underhook catching of a kicking leg.
Outclass Rules in effect ( 30 points trailing = T.K.O. stoppage ).
The click www.aka-england.org
Should anyone be following this thread and be considering entering - entries close on Monday 21st.
Everyone welcome!
Neil
Had a few email enquiring wether the event will be filmed.
The event will be filmed, and the DVD's will be available approximately one week following the Championships.

The match making is going very well.
We only have one entry thus far though in the 70kg division for the British title.
If there are any interested late entries that would be able to compete in this division, as there would only be two entries, it would automatically be a division final, ie Gold - Silver medal.
Please text me on 07973-43-18-18
Thanks,
Neil
As well as only one entry for the MENS 70kg MAx British Title, we only have one entry for the LADIES 70kg MAX British Title.
As stated earlier, if there are only two entries, it would automatically be a division final, ie for the Gold - Silver medals.
If anyone is interested in these matchups, please text me on 07973-43-18-18

I didn't know butter bean done the aka
Peter rather than being insulting why dont you see if you qualify to compete in the AKA?
Then you can show us all how completely awesome you are?
Every competitor that steps into the ring is worthy of praise and respect.
Peter Fellows:
The competitor in the Blue Armor that you are refering to, is actually a highly respected individual by many leading trainers and promoters in Thai-Kickboxing.
He recently won his Pro. debut too, by first round stoppage!
Very sad comment by you there.

Your right im sorry. Good luck with the event

Had a bad day have we?
This photo was taken when Gavin was an amateur champion and was to highlight the purpose and importance of the amateur circuit.
Gavin has gone on to achieve further success with his training at jittis in thailand and yourself - fantastic!
I NEVER said which gym or school ANY of the fighter on ANY of the pictures were from - not boosting myself/negating other at all. This only benefits the fighters themselves!
Thanks for the best wishes.
David
Definately Mr Green!
I have had about 5 hours sleep in the last 5 days.
Pullouts.... we have gone from 6 referees down to three in the last 24 hours!
It's usually the competitors that cause this type of problem!

Lol!
Apparently the machine at the engravers broke down.
Life is never simple!
Still they are superb quality, large, very heavy, and look the biz.
Hope the event goes well Neil and Co,I really enjoyed the AKA events when we were taking part:
Hi Paul,
The event ran very smoothly thanks. Dave put in a lot of hard work in the weeks leading up to this ( as always ), and i think due to this we surpassed last years 2010 Tournament Championships.
You and the firecobra team are definately missed at the amateur events, ( even though your guys usually took all the wins ), and the A.K.A. events that we organised were always very popular ( cracking atmosphere on our Darlington shows ).
There were some great guys on this years show from the Newcastle area, ( from Mark Platts and also from Barry Normans ) - so the North East were still well represented.

I would like to add a big THANKYOU to all who helped to make this show the success it was.
We CANT do it without the support of our fellow instructors and atheletes who all pull together to create something excellent.
I will also thank my good friend Neil Holden who always works tirelessly on these events too.
Mr Pearson,
It was always a pleasure having you and the awesome fire cobra team at our events - I personally loved coming to your (very well organised) AKA events too.
The AKA amateur circuit really was a great success and our new championship format is a testament to that.
Thank you all once again.

Well done on the event guys,Im sure there was some exciting contests:0
There certainly was Mr Pearson!
A whole year had passed since the last A.K.A. championships - and you forget how exciting the format can be for the audience.
The crowd were roaring on several contests, as one athlete lead on the scoreboards, only to be taken over by his opponent, who then in turn pulled it back, only to then fall behind again!!
Exciting, and pretty exhausting too for the teams cornermen, whipping their race horses to the finish line - lol!

Neil
Hey guys just a quick thankyou from me and the Higher Level team to both Dave, Neil and the rest of the competitors for an entertaining day / evening! there were some cracking bouts on the night and some evenly contested bouts that went down to the wire! Great performances all round!
An extra special congratulations to Aaron Brignano who won both his bouts in his first outing in the ring to become IKF Middleweight Champion not bad for a first timer and plenty more to come :)
Also a huge well done to 17 year old David hope who stepped up in class in his first time in the ring against a more experienced fighter from Warribgton to contest for the British Title as a last min replacement due to a pull out!! I had confidence in Dave to rise to the occasion and he more than did that!! A close fought contest to the last round until Dave lost his way slightly but none the less a cracking performance from both lads!!
Finally congratulations to Pete Zebedee who also entered the ring for the first time in another closely contested bout!! Very close indeed this one and IMO Pete should of took the decision but there's always a next time ;)
All in all great performances by the Higher Level crew well done boys look fwd to the next outing :)
Thanks again Dave and Neil, hope you will both be supporting me at my show in feb for some more Thai Kick action!!! will catch up with you both soon ;)
Congrats on what looked like a great tournament!!! Is this open to anyone or just fighters from England?
Biggs:
The A.K.A. Tournament Championships is 'Open' to U.K. competitors.
The World Classic Tournament Championships is 'Open' to all competitors.
Both are great I.K.F. events.
Biggs:
Details for this event are already available on
www.ikfkickboxing.com
Thanks Neil, I live close to Belfast. Is it mainland or are you including N Ireland in it? Thanks
Biggs:
The next event will be open to Northern Ireland, when we do a U.K. championships, ( this is pencilled in for 24-11-2012 ).
However, I have been asked to run a European Championships ( for the third time ), but the costings are just incredible and as for the time that would be required to be spent on the logistics.
Still you never know. I sent out a sponsorship proposal yesterday, and we will have to wait and see what they say.
Hoepefully - I will get to meet you next November, wether it is a U.K. or European Tournament Championships!
Merry Christmas and Best wishes,
Neil
Thanks Neil. Also let me know when your dvd is ready, I'll take one!!
Please contact the promoter - David Eckersley for the dvd's as my work on this show is now completed, ( I was the event co-ordinator for the A.K.A. and I.K.F. rep ).
I suggest texting David, his number is 0044-77486-612-070.
Thanks,
Neil
I would like to say thank you to David for asking me to take photos for The Leigh Dragons.
It was great to get back to the events after such a long break and yes I think that spark has re-kindled the determination to start training again.
I'm looking forward to training in 2012 and hopefully re-visiting the AKA events as part of the Leigh Dragons Team.
Awesome event guys, many many thanks
