Eddie Walker set to face Steven Wakeling atGlory5
Glory has announced via Twitter that the UK's Steven Wakeling will now be fighting America's Eddie Walker (@EddieShowtime) at Glory 5 in London on March 23rd. Wakeling was originally announced to be fighting Simon Marcus (@SimonMarcusNo1), but with Marcus signing on to fight Artem Levin (@ArtemLionLevin) a week before at Lion Fight 9, it was pretty clear that bout would not happen.
Wakeling was last in action when he fought to a controversial draw against Artem Levin. Many felt that Wakeling had one the bout and questions about one of the judges score cards surfaced to add to the controversy. Walker was in action in "Road to Glory" middleweight tournament a few weeks back in California. Walker won two bouts on the night to make it to the tournament final where he lost to Mike Lemaire. This will easily be the biggest fight of Walker's career and a win would catapult him to international status.

oh jesus christ!!!!!! thats a bad fight, real bad mismatch! the fight will be over any time wakeling decides! that walker lad seems cool but come on this is a terrible fight for him!
really bad match making on this easy win i think ko 4 round Steven Wakeling will run him over
have to agree, fair play for taking the fight from walker but this is a baaaaaad match Wakeling by demolition or as Paul says whenever Steven decides to turn up the heat... Shame for Steven, gets mugged via judging vs Levin and then doesnt get to fight Marcus.....
Fair play to Walker, but for right now Wakeling does have the advantage.
Looking forward to it gentleman. Hope to see all of you there.
It's three rounds isn't it? Wakeling is a living legend I know both Eddie fair play for taking it best wishes to both.
I like Eddie Walker and he is a real up and coming talent, but I'm afraid I agree with the rest, bad match! Would have loved to see Wakeling vs Hak Parpanyan.
I give up predicting in the fight game nowadays. I just want to see a damn good fight/show. Best of luck to both.
Much credit to Eddie W. for stepping up for this fight. Plenty of others would have gone the route to pad their record by fighting cans. He's willing to get in there and face strong opponents.
credit for taking the fight eddie but jesus steve is in a totally diff league to the likes of schilling in every dept .

"really bad match making on this easy win i think ko 4 round Steven Wakeling will run him over"

The bout is Kickboxing not Muaythai, so 3x3's.
k-1 rules isnt it, can catch leg and strike and is it 5 second clinch in glory?
"K-1" is a brand name for a "Kickboxing promotion"
This Kickboxing promotion's brand name for this event is "GLORY". ( A rival to "K-1" ).
The ruleset used by both is regarded internationally as 'KICKBOXING'.
Even "K-1" now uses officially a logo clearly stating what sport the "K-1" brand is promoting. ( See picture ).
"GLORY" also state 'Kickboxing' on their promotional material ( posters, website etc ).
It is wrong to say the rules on a "GLORY" Kickboxing promotion are "K-1".
The rules, of course, are "KICKBOXING" as stated on the "GLORY" poster.
Even "K-1" now officially uses a logo clearly stating what sport the "K-1" brand is promoting.
See picture, or visit the official "K-1" website.
Note the event poster for "GLORY 5", does not sat "K-1", but "KICKBOXING".
People need to realise that intentional dis-information, will only hold back the sport of Kickboxing and result in a detriment to U.K. fighter opportunities and possible fighter purses that a long deserved.
Support the sport - Kickboxing!
Best of luck to Wakling, hopfully this bout will lead to great opportunities for the fiture!
Does wind me up the amount of 'K1' champions in the UK who have never even been in K1!
oh dear neil...oh dear me.
It's not kickboxing if you can clinch. Not MT either. It's a whole new ball game. Kickclinching.
lets have k-2 rules, where everyones fights on a mountain
k 9 rules, only dogs allowed
Neil, don't you have more important things to do?
Why is it not Kickboxing if there is a clinch in it? Who says rules cannot be modified? It's almost like saying low-kicks is not kickboxing because they don't wear long pants and kickboots. It's incorrect.
For those saying that k1 rules is not Kickboxing, then how dumb must organisations such as K1, It's Showtime, Fight Code, Glory be if they can't even describe their product correctly? (sarcasm). Maybe some Ax'ers should write in to them to complain.
Re the use of the term 'K1', I think it's now commonly called k1 as a descriptive term for the ruleset because it's easily identifiable.
K9 ha.
We could have K3, whereby fighters have to wear white hooded robes and masks and walk into the ring carrying a burning cross.
Heard it's popular down Texas way.
Or Special K where everybody just gets off their face on narcotics and fights under the modified limited clinch format of mooey kick Thai fighting code.
Actionpromos i think you've got it arse backwards, kickboxing is the easily regonisable term joe public uses. Most of my mates still think and say i'm a kickboxer. If i told them i was a k-1 fighter they would be clueless.
I think for those who need to know the rules,
Kickboxing - above waist kicks no knees.
Kickboxing w lowkicks
K1 - kickboxing w lowkicks &limited clinch
Muay thai.
Calling it kickboxing is clever marketing since everyone who doesnt know calls it that.
Maybe a good analogy being everyone calls Orcas, "killer whales"
Because its similar to a whale in size but since it has teeth, curved dorsal fin, active hunter ect its actually a dolphin. No matter what the fat man at seaworld calls it
Honestly who really cares
We all know what k1 is!
If people wanna call it kickboxing let them
If people wanna call it Muay Thai let them
Does it matter?
U could say it is low kick kickboxing with knees
U could also say it is B Class Thai with limited clinch
Lol
But on topic
Top fight for wakeling I think he will win with ease
But good on Eddie walker for taking the fight
Neil do you correct your missus if she is cleaning the house?
"now listen here love you are NOT hoovering you are merely removing the detritous from the floor with a mechanical vacuum suction device - how many times do I have to tell you !"........
Lol - the fun of AX.
Is this where the hits got through the roof and Brian sends me a big cheque for all the pay-per-click adverts on the thread!
Hey what is the big deal some people ask?
I agree, terminology correct or incorrect is not such a big deal in the sense that it does not effect my life, or my business what people are saying on AX.
However, I do have a passion for a sport I have been around for about 30 years. I do feel sad that the sport has not moved forward from what in my person opinion was a peak and a tremendous achievement....when Grand Master Sken brought over the top Thai’s like Coban to fight the best Europeans on the Supreme Muaythai Championships shown on screensport.
I only feel sad, because in the U.K. we have such talented fighters that are so dedicated and such highly skilled athletes that I feel they do not get anyway near the financial rewards or recognition that they deserve when compared to the people competing in the combat-sports of Boxing or Mixed-Martial-Arts.
Likewise too, the trainers should also be getting these such rewards for their knowledge and dedication.
The fighters and trainers in the combat-sports of Boxing and Mixed-Martial-Arts do not work harder or risk more than those involved in Muaythai. You can only dedicate 100%, and fighters and trainers in all three sports, especially at the top level, all do this.
More importantly for me, I see children training and competing that have such enormous potential. They are so talented, and unless things change their future in 20 years time could be as the U.K. scene is still today. Small hall shows, and very small purses.
So this is where my passion kicks in, or why I sometimes bother.
Is this a bad thing?
Some people may not be bothered about the U.K. scene, or want things to change as the current circuit suits them and hence take any and all opportunities to dis anything that could lead to making a difference.
Christ on a bike...will this ever end?
Regards the fight...I too fear this is a step too far for Eddie. Eddie is a mate and has balls of steel...he entered Enfusion having only had about 4 pro fights or something like that.
He beat Schilling despite again being the underdog.
Steven Wakeling though is literally WORLD CLASS...different league all together.
If Eddie gives a good account of himself and doesn't get hurt then I'll be happy with that.
Fortune favours the bold and all that.
Regarding correctly stating wether something is K-1 or GLORY….
Well, when millions of pounds or being put on the line in BRAND and PRODUCT recognition it is extremely important!!! Especially when success rides on everything, even down to the smallest details being correct.
Product…. KICKBOXING.
Right now Kickboxing is booming once again. In part due to promotional companies such as K-1 and GLORY and SUPERKOMBAT several others that are doing very well but also because there has been a wider fan base built up to watch combat-sports where fighters use Kicking as well as boxing. This is due to the boom in the combat-sport of Mixed-Martial-Arts, driven mainly by the promotional company that uses the brand name U.F.C.
A lot of people that have been exposed to Mixed-Martial-Arts like the action while the fighters are standing up, but do not like the groundwork.
This has opened up the opportunity for a promotional company to trail blaze what a particular audience wants, hence the boom in Kickboxing promotions.
Now, would the UFC promotional company have one of its contracted fighters state in an interview that he has a BELLATOR ( rival M.M.A. promotional company ) fight coming up? The answer is No! They would be allowed to say they have Mixed-Martial-Art bout though as this is the widely used name of the sport that explains to an audience what the product is.
The product is a martial arts fight. Which style of martial art? No exclusive style but all the styles mixed. Mixed-Martial-Arts. The product name for the sport - easily recogniseable to a wide audience
Likewise would the GLORY promotional company have one of its contracted fighters state in an interview that he has a K-1 ( rival Kickboxing promotional company ) fight coming up? The answer is No! They would be allowed to say KICKBOXING though as this is the widely used name of the sport that explains to an audience what the product is.
The product is a Kickboxing fight. People will expect to see Kicks and Boxing. Kickboxing the product name of the sport - easily recognisable to a wide audience.
The GLORY promotion are looking to do for the combat-sport of KICKBOXING what the UFC promotion has done for the combat-sport of MIXED-MARTIAL-ARTS.
If they can, this would be amazing for participants! At the moment anyone that is talented and would like to earn what they deserve from combat-sports has to move in Boxing or Mixed-Martial-Arts.
So what do we do? Do we support such an opportunity that is being hard driven by the GLORY promotion to take the combat-sport of KICKBOXING to a similar level of Boxing and Mixed-Martial-Arts?
Which could result in the more than deserved financial rewards and recognition for our fighters and look to make things better for those talented kids in the gym today - when they come through from the grass roots events…....
or do we look to hold things back by purposely using dis-information.
Calling the Brand name of the promotion company GLORY by a rival name for a bit-of-AX-fun,
Or calling the PRODUCT name of the sport KICKBOXING by the name modified-thai, again for a bit-of-AX-fun,
Personally I would like things to be better for the fighters of today and for the fighters of tomorrow.
Each to their own!
will these fights be going to a forth extra round in the event the judges cant decide a winner?
Jonno: I am in agreement with you so i don't know how i've got it arse first.
Two questions for anybody:
1) Why does the K1 organisation refer to it's style of sport as 'Kickboxing'?
2) And is this prestigious, pioneering organisation wrong in doing so?
KICKBOXING is a generic term for certain boxing & kicking sports such as:
K1 is a 'form' of Kickboxing.
As is Full Contact.
As is Low Kicks, aka Freestyle, aka International Rules.
I would even put Muay Thai under the Kickboxing 'umbrella' sporting list, much to the sheer gut-wrenchingly disgust of the muay community regarding such a thing :) (joke)
BUT SERIOUSLY, IF K-1, GLORY, SUPER KOMBAT, ETC, CAN LABEL THEMSELVES AS KICKBOXING SPORTS, THE WHO ARE WE TO STATE DIFFERENT?
If i took full contact and said i was now going to permit elbow strikes, does that not still make it kickboxing? It no longer makes it full contact, but surely it's still KB.
And yeah, back to topic. Looking forward to seeing the upcoming Glory fights, can't wait.
http://www.wak-1f.com/#/news/4560627176
there's a reference in there regarding the use of the k-1 name and some clarification that WAKO are not reps of k-1 and shouldn't be using the name, which goes for anybody else, from a legal stance that is. Even though i stand by the fact that if you say to a fighter "fancy a k1 bout next month", that they'd naturally know what you were talking about and not meaning the real K-1 organisation.
Yes if the fights are considered a draw after three rounds, it will go to a fourth.
Im after a couple of ringside seats for one of my lads , he's been looking himself but cant find any ...
anyone got any and how much are they ??
Fair play Eddie Walker. I hope he is coming to fight, because he's a fighter right? But none of those guys are a scratch on Wakeling.
if it was muay thai i think eddy gots no chance but seance it 3 rounds no elbows no clinch and Wakeling dont use his hands to much eddie gots a chance
Your only going to get better by fighting the best. Good luck to you Eddie.
Got to agree with a few other on here though, it is a bit of a mismatch. I reckon the 1st round should be a cracker alone. How long it lasts after that is up to Wakeling. He is that good!!
Good luck both guys ! What weight is this matched at anyone ?
i think simon marcus and wakling is the fight at this weight, simon is big at this weight and clearly very good and iv known him for quite some time but i too fear wakeling would be too good for him too! still suppose wakling on the other hand will be happy to get a fight none the less? not many are up to the task and i truely wish eddie walker all the luck in the world!
Anyone wanting to bet against Wakeling please message me...
