JWP KO3 Alex Tui
Chapman W3 Mahoney
Behic KO2 ?? (Papua New Guinea opponent)
Zambidis KO2 Billy

SEMI FINALS

JWP KO3 Chapman
Zambidis KO3 Behic (fight of the night)

FINAL

Zambidis W3 JWP

Great night all round, Zambidis vs Behic was the fight of the night. Zambidis dropped Behic in the second with a right and busted him open twice with knees to the head, Behic showed unbelievable heart and fought with everything he had until the ref stopped it in the 3rd with Behic bleeding badly and taking too many shots.

Final was very close, Parr outworked him with knees as expected, Zambidis outworked him with hands and kicks, particularly leg kicks. May have been fatigue but Parr appeared buzzed a couple times. Very close but Zam toughed it out. One judge had it even, other 2 had Zam by a point. Zam's rally in the last
round got it for him. Good fight, but nowhere near the fireworks of Zam v Behic.

Hi guys,

I'm a Brisbane boy, but just wanted to know if those who were there could clear a few things up -
1. My mate was there (formerly from Brisbane) but now in Melbourne, he felt the final, Zam v JWP - should have gone to an extension round or JWP should have got the nod. But being a Brissy boy, I thought he could have been biased, but some of the guys on the Sportsblitz site, believed that also!!!
2. Screens on Fox 11, on Friday 20th Dec. 2002 at 8.30pm in Melb & Syd, and at 7.30pm in Brisbane.

BTW Paul, that first photo you put up was chopper and JWP wasn't it?

JWP looked fitter, than he did against Jenk. That's what training with Paul Briggs does for you.
I personally doubt that their is a fitter fighter, currently in this nation than Paul Briggs.

Look forward to more pictures Paul.

this was certainly one of the better shows from recent times,
congrats to zambides for a great night, commiserations to jwp for just coming up short although looking great during the night as well.
behic vs zambides was awesome, the biggest highlight being zam's new kneeing skills! his jumping knees to the head busted behic open twice and he kneed jenk in close several times to the head. behic showed balls like i never seen in that fight.
zam vs jwp was a close one, it depended on what you liked.
for my money zambides superior punching, leg kicks and the fact he looked like he had jwp hurt in the last round and at the end of the first got him the win. muay thai purists would feel jwp won with superior knee work but this is k1, not muay thai and knees do not or should not be placed above everything else. jwp complained but i felt he was outhustled in the end. i went with a group of 7 and 5 of us felt zambides won, two felt it was even. zambides fought like he really wanted in the last round. on my card he won that round and edged the first particularly because he appeared to stun jwp at the end of it. either way great fight.

Guys, my oppinion . I was there cheering for Wayne. I found myself freaking out during the last 30seconds or so because I felt that he laid off with the knees, and thought that he needed to do something more to absolutely secure a win.

I was hoping for another rnd for Wayne's sake. So I thought the fight could have gone either way. I didn't think it was some sort of obvious rip off.

Though, after the fight I spoke to a couple of industry people, one of whom regurlarly judges fights. And they felt that Wayne had just done enough to win, the other dissagreed and felt Mike won without question.

So, a rematch with fresh fighters has to happen.

I'll put some more pics up soon.

No problem steve. I had to double check a couple of times.

Wayne said at the end of the fight that he felt he had won.

Tarik said that he felt it was close and could have gone either way.....but that he will look after Wayne's interest by trying to get both fighters into the Japan show.

I'm certain we'll see these guys face each other in a super-fight within 6 months. Tarik is a smart guy and I'm sure he'll want to put it on while it's still fresh in people's minds.

Hey Guys, back online after my fight, I had a good win on tuesday night, it was good to gey it over and done with.

Great night of fights all round, what I saw of it anyway, Jenk showed a temendous amount of guts in his fight. That guy is awesome to watch. J.W.P and Zambidis had a good fight, it was very close, but i thought J.W.P should have scraped away with a close decision. Zambidis, while still on the balls of his feet, looked drained after a tough fight with Behic.

Paul, as usual, great pics, keep em coming!

Felix, almost time for me to go on that list of yours isn't it? hehe

My initial opinion is that JWP won every single round against Zambidis but it will be good to see it on T.V as there were some so called experts that agreed with the decision. Zambidis landed some big shots that rattled Parr but I didn't think they were enough to have taken the decision, in fact Parr was landing punches of his own as well as leg kicks and knees.Zambidis had no answers for the knees which drained his energy.I guess the telling factor for me was that throughout the fight Zambidis was on the back foot which was unusual for him and JWP was taking the fight to him with good defence{ most of the time} .

Posted: 2002-11-27 06:57:28
I thought Mike Zambidis deserved it. And it will be great to see him in Japan, I am sure the Japanese will love his style. In my opinion it was very close but he did enough in the end to clinch it. To be honest I was a little surprised that there is such a divergence of opinion, but I guess this illustrates that we all look for different things and see different things when we watch a fight.
I had it first round to JWP, second and third to Zambidis. Zambidis was certainly tired from a draining battle with Behic and picked his shots carefully, but he rattled JWP on a couple occasions. JWP did a lot of great work in the grapple, Zambidis was I feel busier and more effective with hands and low kicks.
Although I scored it for Mike, I would not have cried foul if JWP got the decision. It was that sort of fight, nip and tuck.
One thing is clear, both warriors were tired from a hard night and they deserve to go at it in a one off fight when both are fresh! Not taking anything away from Zambidis who earned it with gruelling battles, but this great feedback will whet the appetite for the rematch!
Although I could see why JWP has stated he would not want to fight Mike in a 12 rounder under normal KB rules. With the knees, it makes for a closer fight.

They should both fight each others styles or revert to K1 style which should suit both there styles excellent fight I thought JWP for his knee techinque but having spoke to one of the judges he says that they were not connecting so he gave it a draw, JWP got rocked into the 2nd or3rd round which I guess made a difference EXCELLENT fight ....
Excellent Show...

what a night of fights.
I had a great time in Melbourne fighting at the town hall. All the boys gave it there all and all the fights were tough battles.
The Zambidis fight was close but i still think I did enough to win. First round I used my range firing off front kicks every time he would go to step in. He was trying to leg kick but I blocked 90% of them and then would counter with kicks of my own. When he would try to punch I would lock him up and knee him non-stop while he just stood there doing nothing until the ref would break us up. In the second round I did match the same walking up to him and putting the pressure on. I think it was in the second I threw a nice hand combo that rocked Zambidis, I seen his legs wobble and his eyes glaze over for a second. I then grabbed him and started to knee him to the body again. In the third Zambidis knew he was behind and came out hard, he threw some nice punches that landed but I would lock on and start kneeing him again. I think he won the first half of the third but I did enough to make it a close round.
At the end they told us not to take our gloves off because it could go a extra round. When the ref bought us together and Andy Raymond said the the scores, 29-29 30-28 29-28. I was waiting for my hand to be raised but then they called out Iron Mike Zambidis.
I don't know how you score these K-1, I threw hands, kicks and plenty of knee's (which I know don't score the same as muay thai but at the same time must score). I blocked all of his leg kicks pretty much over the three rounds then would counter with my own. All he landed was punches in the third round. I walked forward keeping the pressure on him for almost the whole fight so what is it that you have to do?
I would like to thank everyone in Melbourne and around Australia for giving me great support on the night. Hope everyone will turn in when it is shown on Fox so you can make your own judgment.

so who is going to represent oceana in the k1 max now? zambithis can't can he?
John Wayne Parr
Posted: 2002-11-28 15:47:55
I am not sure what happens. When I was in America I was not allowed to fight in the K-1 Max USA because I was not a American citizen. The Promoter wouldn't let Jongsanan fight either because he didn't look American and it would not have been fair on the other American qualifiers. I don't want to say any thing bad about Zambidis because he had nothing to do with the decision but how can he represent Australia when he can't even speak english. I know a lot of Thai guys that would love to come over and fight in the K-1 as well here in Australia, what would be the rules there if they fought and won?
Lee

last year there were supposed to be thais in the tournament. i guess if there were and they won they would have been in Japan as well,
i guess its called k1 oceania max becuase its held in the oceania region, but not 100% exclusive to oceania fighters.
obviously zambidis will be representing greece.

How does that work? I think the Yanks have hit the nail on the head.We have a chance to get an Australian fighter to Japan and we send a Greek instead. Now I am giving props to Zam for winning but that is just stupid. Secondly If you have time to answer Wayne, Do you think it would have been any different if Bulma reffed the last fight instead of Hedgecock.

Obviously the case with Zambidis being allowed into the K1 Max and the Thais not allowed last year is because of the amount of tickets that Zambidis sells.
We all know how K1 tournaments are run.

just a thought, perhaps because he is represented by australian management in stan longinides? and an australian promoter in solak.
and really if he's not in the oceania tournament, and aus is like a second home to him now anyway, then in what tournament do you possibly put him to qualify for the k1 japan?
nong 0 i was pretty sure the thai's weren't dropped last year because they weren't allowed.

Hey guys,

I just read a couple of posts further up where some of you totally bring up a valid point.

Should we be sending Mike over to Japan instead of an Aus or Oceania resident?

I think that's a fair and reasonable question but,

Check out the line up without Mike. There was room for more of Oceania's best to be duking it out with Wayne and Chapman. Personally, I'd like to see a couple of Oz eliminators prior to the event. Queensland has many hard guys in or close enough to this weight division

Surely we are greatful to have Mike in our country (many times now), to make the card much more exciting. I am sorry also If Wayne doesn't get to fight in Japan this time, but these questions should have been asked before we invited such a great fighter. As far as I'm concerned Mike is just about an Aussie anyways. He is much loved here by thousands of fans as is our own JWP and Chopper when visiting.
