A Goodridge Bernardo rematch?
oooooooohhh :-)
My predictions:
Yoshihiro Takayama vs. Bob Sapp = Sapp by some crazy ass beating
Hidehiko Yoshida vs. Masaaki Satake = Yoshida by Japanese tea bag
Kazuyuki Fujita vs. Mirko Cro Cop = Fujita by lay and pray
Qinonton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Cyril Abidi = Jackson by another "lucky" punch
Gary Goodridge vs. Mike Bernardo = Bernardo by crushing hook to the head
Yasuhito Namekawa vs. Wallid Ismail = Namekawa by some booosheeet technique
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Daniel Gracie = Gracie...can't bet against a Gracie
Tadao Yasuda vs. Jan "The Giant" Nortje = Yasuda by sling shot

Hear what Jackson has to say about his first fight with Abidi.
HAHAHA,Rampage is hilarious.
does every MMA guy that beats a K1 fighter have to do a rematch???
Geuss the Cro-cop match spoils my conspiracy theory.
Justin
1. Jan Nortje beat Tadao Yasuda (R2 0:57) by TKO (towel throw).
2. Daniel Gracie beat Shinsuke Nakamura (R2 2:14) with a cross armbreaker.
3. Wallid Ismail beat Yasuhito Namekawa (R3) by decision.
4. Mike Bernardo beat Gary Goodridge (R1 2:12) by KO.
5. Quinton Jackson beat Cyril Abidi (R3) by decision.
6. Mirko Cro Cop beat Kazuyuki Fujita (R3) by decision.
7. Masaaki Satake Retirement Match: Hidehiko Yoshida beat Masaaki Satake (R1 0:50) with a front sleeper.
8. Bob Sapp beat Yoshihiro Takayama (R1 2:16) with a cross armbreaker.
2 things: Bob Sapp is improving as predicted. His 2 point foot ball stance killed me.
And Mike Bernardo is funny.
I like the last picture . . . conquering the butt of Goodridge.
That last Bernardo pick is hilarious.
Lots of photos here:

I was impressed with Sapps armbar!
As much as I hated him before. If he continues to learn real fighting techniques, I will become his biggest fan.
Sapp, seriously for a big giant man passed the guard well and slapped the arm bar on pretty well. He is improving great. Can't wait to see how his standup progresses.
Here's more:
His guard pass was wrong but it worked against a fish like Takayama. I loved how he looked at his corner before going into the armbar. It looked like he couldn't believe his luck...
sapp proves one thing. if you give someone soft like takayama a big enough beating, he'll be too dioriented to defend against your armbar. seriouly though, i'm glad they are giving him pussys to fight. he should get satake next.
fujita was surprisingly bad. it's hard to imagine this is the same guy who beat kerr and shamrock. his game plan was completely shut down by crocop's sprawl. his stand up reminded me of takada [i know, no one is as bad a takada].
satake only trains if there are cameras filming him in the gym. what a lazy bastard! he actually made it to the k-1 final in '94.
This was Satake's retirement bout I believe.
hehe. whatever that means. how many retirement bouts has frye had?
I don't understand how anyone can get away with simply a sprawl to defend takedowns against someone who wrestles. Good wrestlers should know how to work the takedown further, AFTER the guy sprawls. They shouldn't even attempt double or single legs takedowns during the moments and from the distance that they typically do. They should setup the takedowns and do them in closer range when their opponent is attacking. That is when they cannot sprawl well. But, if they do attempt the takedowns from 50 feet away and the guy sprawls on them, they should get arm control, grab a leg, turn them, attack the hips, drive, get head control, drive again...voila. If you watch really good wrestlers in wrestling matches, they work really hard for the takedowns and it often takes 4-5 motions to get the opponent down. They use combination moves, just like in Kickboxing. It takes a more advanced wrestler to defend against a takedown like this. That is why people like Kerr, Randleman, Coleman, Tito, Jackson etc...would take people down so often even if they sprawled like a madman.
Anyway...it frustrates me when I see a fighter like Cro-Cop stay on his feet simply because he sprawls.
well the first fight i'm sure was a work. this one, i suspect.
How the hell di Jackson win a decision over Abidi?! That's incredible. I'll be looking forward to watching that one when I get home.
Crocop V Fujita
Crocop V Fujita
brian i dont know much about mma, but watching a couple of ufc broadcasts
this year i saw a couple of fights that had one fighter refusing to go to the
ground by sprawling or whatever else and succeeding at it. one was bj penn vs
matt serra. serra is a gracie student that is supposed to be a great takedown
artist ( shooter?) but was unable to ever get penn on the ground.
another is this guy chuck liddell who is supposed to be a pure striker with a
muay thai background. ive seen him fight a couple of times and never seen him
taken down.
Apparently Mike shared his feelings with everyone else.
And it made Mark Coleman mad. I guess he challenged Mike to afight directly after he put his foor on Goodridge. HA Mike rules.
"chuck liddell who is supposed to be a pure striker with a
muay thai background."
Chuck Liddell is indeed a Muay Thai striker, but he was also a D1 wrestler.
Yeah, plus BJ Penn is a better wrestler than Matt Serra. Matt Serra is more of a straight BJJ artist. BJ Penn is more well rounded. BJ Penn is easily one of my favorite fighters. I can't wait until he learns more standup skills.
And Lidell was a college wrestler...like Matt said...and he has trained with Tito and the word is that Tito had difficulties in taking Lidell down in training. Lidell has excellent takedown defense, and it involves a lot more than simply sprawling. He sometimes gets taken down, but he can't be held there.
Example above, in this pic with Cro Cop vs Fujita...
Fujita could've secured Cro-Cop's arm and do a gator-roll, which would take Cro-cop off of his base, and then Fujita could've scrambled from there...gotten head control, perhaps rotate like a clock dial...break that body lock, anything but sit there. Fujita should not have easily let Cro-Cop get lock his arms around his body during the sprawl. Wrestlers instinct should be to go for hand control, especially during a sprawl.
The thing that makes MMA quite different than pure wrestling matches, of course, is the striking. Wrestlers sometimes get knee'd or punched and sometimes forget about wrestling. I think that is what happened to Mark Kerr in a couple of his matches that he lost (Vovchanchyn, Fujita).
mark coleman challenges bernardo? HA! i challenge coleman. i'm dead serious. i'd kick his ass. the man would be humiliated by my skill to juggles 3 balls longer than he.
what? you don't think he challenged mike to fight k-1 rules, do you?
anyway, it is pretty clear that i suck at reading lips. i thought coleman was saying
"hey mr. bernardo, sir, i would like to congratulate you on a great win over a dumbass with no kickboxers or kickboxing coaches in his corner. we humbly apologize for gary holding and hitting and for his disgraceful attempts at hitting you when you were on the ground yet again. i found the bronx salute quite amusing and that lion hunter pose had me in stitches. might i also add that his tits are sagging. what a loser! thanks for knocking him out because none of us wanted to rince his stinky mouthpiece. ichi-ni-san-duh! happy new year. by the way, i took a dive against takada."
the mirko-fujita fight was just weird.
does anyone remember the mirko-takada fight where takada walked around the ring switching from orthodox to southpaw and back and forth and back and forth with absolutely no intention of initiating an attack [before all the butt scooting]. this fight was like that. fujita did sweet f*** all for three rounds. hell, my wife could have replaced mirko for that fight and come out without a mark on her too.
Felix are you calling this fight a work?
i suspect a work.
either that or fujita is way overhyped and really knows nothing about fighting. i swear yasuda was better than fujita and he got stopped by nortje.
..."mark coleman challenges bernardo? HA! i challenge coleman. i'm dead serious. i'd kick his ass. the man would be humiliated by my skill to juggles 3 balls longer than he"...
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHA!!! Go Bernardo!!!! Good to see him winning again.
Crocop in action...
David Lucas, Matt Serra isn't all that hot and to see him fight BJ Penn was sad thing indeed, BJ is just too nice. This event looks like a Pride show. Is that the case?? If so how come it wasn't advertised on Direct TV PPV?? I'm glad Rampage won, I like that guy's style and he's one heck of a vicious fighter too! One more thing, why is Goodridge fighting K-1 rules?? Didn't he get KO'd before while fighting K-1 rules????
El Capitan
"serra is a gracie student that is supposed to be a great takedown
artist ( shooter?)"
I wouldn't call Matt at great take-down artist. He pulls guard more often than he shoots for takedowns. He is a great no-gi grappler though. BJ has pretty good boxing skills and IMO is a better fighter.
I agree Matt BJ Penn is too well rounded a fighter and his skill level is way above Serra's. Plus Serra, gets too cocky too fast and most of the time it works agaisnt him. However, he is a pretty good grappler and submission artist. But his stand up game needs lots of work, just like his brother.
El Capitan
guys i dont know diddley about these guys in ufc, im just asking about what
the announcers say about these guys.
i did wonder why bj penn chose to stand up as much as he could against
serra, and serra was totally unsuccessful in trying to take the fight to the
ground.
so a more general question is, if a pure striker goes to mma, can he be successful if he just learns to stay off the ground? and what kinds of things\
does he need to do to stay on his feet?
Dave, My own opinon: The days of any one dimensional fighter doing successfully in any NHB arena are over. Unless You're Bob Sapp of course.
BJ knew Serra had poor stand up. Attack you opponents weakest area. I'm sure you know that.
You have to train on the ground to learn how to escape from the ground. After he spends the required amount of time learning to defend takedowns, positional escapes, and subs, he is no longer a pure striker.
It is very hard to defend a takedown from a top level wrestler. It is very hard to escape a top level BJJ fighter on the ground. It is very hard to stand and trade with a top level striker.
I'd say COLEMAN just wanted to beat the shit out of BERNARDO! the thought of rules were probably not in his mind. Mark has no business in K1 and he would be the first to admit that :)
In MMA he would takedown and beat the absolute piss out of BERNARDO or Mirko for that matter. In a street fight likewise. Don't jude all wrestlers by FUJITA.
Justin
oh yeah. then why was he chief second in a kickboxing match? LOL.
Because he is garys friend and trains with him, I would HOPE that there was someone from a kickboxing background in his corner??
Bottom line Put ANY K1 fighter in a MMA bout agaisnt the best MMA fighters and they will loose. Seems that a few MMA guys can sneek a win or 2 in K1 though. You would even have to consider Vanderlais bout v Mirko a moral victory for MMA.
Justin
ps not gonna make many friends here am I :)
i was laughing at the ring entrance itself. my father in law didn't get it until i said none of those guys walking behind goodridge were kickboxing types.
and justin, your observation of kb vs mma is easy to explain. zero grappling vs an mma guy is cake while little striking ability has a punchers chance in k-1.
"and justin, your observation of kb vs mma is easy to explain. zero grappling vs an mma guy is cake while little striking ability has a punchers chance in k-1."
Lost me re this so I'll explain my theory as best I can.....
In a MMA match with a cro-cop/lebanner (eg..) I would give them a "punchers chance" of beating a TOP MMA fighter in MMA. With top wrestlers being the hardest asks eg.. COLEMAN or ERIKSON who would control a tight GnP game unless they got tagged. The liklehood of the GnP is far more likely. Evidence can be seen in the way the Pride v K1 rules are structured.
In K1 bouts naturally the K1 guys have the upperhand, just that some of the MMA guys are big and can punch. Eg Rampage & Goodridge (if he gets his shit off, he is no Roy JONES jnr though), SAPP.... Well he's a freak and is a bad eg. But that aside he beat the current and most winningest k1 GP champ HOOST twice. LEBANNER v FRYE is what should happen to MMA guys in a K1 match.
All in all I think if the $$ improves in MMA we might see some name guys get in the game and train up for it seriously. I had herd rumors of LEBANNER going to do this under chute boxe.
I love K1 and all types of combat sports. My favourite is naturally MMA due to its completeness.
