Honesty is the best policy.

I teach a group of boys aged 10, during my first session with them, I was spat at, called names and one even tried to pull my hair! I pinned the ring leader to the floor, got their attention, and now 4 months on...there's discipline in the dojo.

What we have learnt from each other is mutual respect but also the importance and value of honesty. I expelled 2 for lying. The following week one of the students kicked another student (who started crying). I asked him if he had kicked him...and you could see the thought going into his response.
Does he lie and maybe get away with it?
Or tell the truth and be disciplined?
He told the truth, got disciplined and carried on with his training. I felt really proud of him.

Most of the kids in this particular class are statemented (regularly being suspended from school). And although I find them hard work, I really enjoy teaching them. The school's run out of funding for next year but I'm going to teach for them on a voluntary basis. I see alot of potential in the kids and teaching them is a reward in itself!!
