i want to get my tongue pierced but i am now wondering if it is worth it. apparantly because the tongues a muscle it can heal up within half an hour, so i would have wear it whilst training. i also want to start fighting once i finish uni. does anybody know someone who tains with a peircing. is it safe. i dont want to get it done then have my tongue ripped out and on the other hand i dont want to spend the money if it heals up the next time i train.

I think it is okay, from what I undertand you can os a soft plastic insert while training. I have heard that they possibly cause long term tooth and gum dammage but has little to do with fighting.

Well I know ppl that DO train with them but dont fight. That seems to work OK so long as you are careful I suppose.

however, I know someone who somehow managed to bite on his when he got hit in a street fight and it kinda shattered his tooth. Not cool at all.

I suspect that even with a mouthguard in, you could damage the bottom teeth. I wouldnt risk it.

How are the rules set out when it comes to tongue peircings and competition bouts?

I have trained and fought with a toungue piercing, and had no problems with either. However after 8 years of wearing it I decided me teeth meant more to me then the peircing as I would chip them every now and then from biting on the barbell whilst eating. When I took it out about 4 years ago the plastic barbells weren't really on the market, I think they would definately help with this problem. So if you are worried about biting on it whilst fighting/training I would definately replace the surgical steel one with a plastic one.

i have had no trouble with my toungue piercing in hard sparring - havent fought tho. a mouthguard offers enough protection for the top teeth and i find the bottom ball of the barbell doesnt even touch the bottom teeth because it sits right at the bottom of the mouth

once you have been pierced for a while you can take it out and put it back in easily enough

i used to have my bottom lip pierced twice and used to take them out for sparring. once while holding pads i hit myself in the mouth and gave myself a fat lip - had the lip rings in then. due to the swelling i couldnt remove one of the rings so i tried to pull it apart with a pair of pliers and vice grips ....... dropped the vice grips while i was trying to pull the ring which ended up pulling the ring out. along with a bit of pain and blood.

Hello mate,

If you are that worried, and to put your mind at rest, you gotta ask yourself one question:

Fight or piercing?

If you plan to take your fighting seriously, then you do not want this little dilemma playing on your mind before you enter the ring. (fight ring, that is!)

I used to have about 7 or 8 piercings in each ear but got that fed up of putting them in and taking them out every day that in the end I left them out so long that most have healed up. We may like those bits of metal hanging off our faces but I like my ears more.
