Ozkan vs Boyes result

Anyone got the results of this fight & how it went?
Paul
Posted: 2004-02-22 13:17:47
It was a pretty tough fight.

Ozkan won a points dec.
Both guys rocked each other during the fight.
Boyes was a lot tougher than I thought and threw some huge shots. Ozkan got a deep gash over his left eye pretty early on, but I didn't see how it happened (not sure if it was a punch or a head clash.

Paul

Jordan didn't fight guys.

The kiwi kid that fought Tetoris boxing was pretty impressive.
Don't remember his name, but he won by K0 in the second I think.

Kara V Wissam was easily the fight of the night.
It was a thousand miles per hour from the opening second.

Wissam won KO.

This was as gutsy a fight as you will ever see... Aaron Boyes came to fight and came to rattle and shake Ozkan and he did all that and more.
He cut Gurkan over the left eye in the first round with a knee (as it was K-1 rules) and it was a bad cut but they stemmed the blood flow so it was okay to go on.
Gurkan looked tentative early, which is natural following his KO loss to Zambidis last time out... but this was Gurkan's return to his comfort zone under K-1 rules and at 78kg.
There were times when Aaron landed flush flush blows on Ozkan... in particular in round four in the corner he landed five HUGE shots to Ozkan's face and the crowd went wild... then Ozkan rallied back and showed flashes of the Ozkan of old with maniacal spurts where he went absolutely postal on Aaron but Aaron took his best shots.
Both men grinned, trash talked, tried to sucker each other in... it was a real stoush!
Great to see Gurkan back in the winners circle with a unan decision and hats off to Aaron Boyes for a magnificent effort. He gave as good as he got.

since when was k1 rules ozkans comfort zone?
the majority of his fights have been normal kickboxing and i have never seen him hrow a knee in my life,
anyway this was a good night and it has to be said that the KO loss to zambides has taken a fair bit out of gurkan,

Paul

I'm guessing that he'll fight in Qld.
Ozkan said that he's got a fight in 10 days time, all the while Tarik was pointing at his cut.

If you ask Ozkan what rules he is most comfortable at, he will say K-1. What weight, he will say 78kg.

Hey Mikey give me a call mate
Lee
Posted: 2004-02-22 21:44:27
why is that michael? since he never knees or clinches why would he prefer that? shorter overall fight length perhaps?
Paul
Posted: 2004-02-22 22:00:53
Ozkan kneed a bit last night, I was quite surprised.

Hey, have you guys noticed that even though he doesn't knee much, Ozkan has never really been troubled by knees except by Jacobs and Vermes. He seems to have pretty decent defenses against them.
Joe Blow
Posted: 2004-02-22 22:25:20
Maybe he has'nt fought a really good knee fighter yet,ie Daniel Dawson, JWP ect who can damage you badly if you cant grapple, great photos!

Ozkan's cut.

What do you blokes reckon, should he be fighting in such a short time from now?
Traad
Posted: 2004-02-22 23:05:12
Paul, when Songchai brought over some fighters Ozkan landed some heavy leather on the thai, then in the 2nd or 3rd the thai in a grapple kneed him in the face/jaw to end the fight. Against a good grapple he isn't experienced enough in the grapple IMO but does ok, i think he likes shorter fights
Paul
Posted: 2004-02-22 23:12:14
I was kinda basing my thoughts on the later K-1 fights against the heavyweights Traad. I just remember his defense being just folding his arms and sort of holding them against his chest to stop them landing on his head, and it seemed to work really great for a bloke who had so much height dissadvantage over the bigger guys.

But yeah sure, I've seen grapplers give hims a hell of a time. Jacobs stands as the most troublesome knee fight I've personally seen him in.
I haven't seen much before 99 though.

cheers everyone for your support. It was a real buzz fighting Ozkan on a Tarik Solak promotion. I have the upmost respect for both Tarik and Gurkan as both of them are true gentlemen of the sport. The treatment given to both me and my team in Melbourne was well beyond the usual treatment of fighters.

Although i lost the fight on the score cards i felt really good fighting at this weight again (78kg rather than 70kg) and was able to take Gurkan's best punches and come back with my own.

Gurkan is a very cleaver fighter who plays mind games with you in the ring, he is very good at disguising when he is hurt and stealing rounds by coming on stong at the end of each round.

Well its back to the gym now and i look forward to k1 nz vs oz, thanks Hape for your support in the corner on Sunday, my hands felt great!!

You must remember that K-1 is Gurkan's preferred rules... not modified or full Thai. Under K-1 rules you can't lock onto the back of the neck and Thai grapple an opponent and knee them consistently. You can lock, knee but then MUST release. People confuse K-1 rules too much with modified Thai in which you can grapple three mins straight with an opponent. K-1 doesn't allow that.
Gurkan has fought some good knee fighters, namely Vermes, Jacobs and Dendenai and all gave him problems in the clinch - all of these fights were under modified or full Thai rules. Hence his comfort zone is under K-1 rules in which he also likes the fact that some opponents will come in and try to knee and that's where he likes to come underneath with uppercuts or over the top with his overhands. It may not be the way to combat a Thai stylist... but hey, if that's what he's comfortable doing, it has worked for him in the past on a few occasions.

By the way... he WILL be fighting Scott Bannan. Confirmed that with him today. He's hungry for the megamatch.

Sweet as Aaron, I told you Gurkan knows how to make a good fighter look ordinary, well you got the experience out this, use it for your next outing. You got every one from Australia's repect.

You one tough Pakeha man.

Aaron, you have balls the size of watermelons mate!
Lightning Mike Angove

And you know we grow them water melons pretty big in NZ mate, it's the naturally fertile plains you see, not dry, arid and flacid like those aussie soils (LOL)

Its good to see that these unknown fighters from NZ geta chance to fight guys like Gurkhan,it lifts their profile and it gives them that well overdue exposure that every fighter deserves.NZ is full of talent and with the right match making they will be fully exposed to the growing kickboxing fans world wide. The only problem with being a kiwi is that we can t fly.HAHAHAHA but we sure can scrap.Maybe the Aussie promoters should be more concerned about good matchs instead of getting there boys to fight no bodies.Remeber Tarik when I said we had good fighters in NZ.DESTINY comes to he who waits, and its been well worth the wait.Way to go AAron you deserve all the accolades you get mate..Go NZ in the Anzac show.
