ISKA/IKF World title fight

12 rd WORLD TITLE FIGHT

San Jose California November 12 th 2004

Schwartz Faces Bottone
In World Title Unification Bout
Schwartz Faces Bottone For IKF/ISKA World Kickboxing Titles November 12th
By Mike Afromowitz - muaythaimes@aol.com

Undefeated and number 2 ranked Super Middleweight (172-pound limit) kickboxing superstar Brian Schwartz (Left, *16-0, 9 KO/TKO's) and four-time world champion and number 2 ranked Middleweight Tommy " Bee" Bottone (Right, *41-4, 19 KO/TKO's) will square off with one another to unify the vacant International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) and International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) full-contact rules, Super Middleweight titles during a 12-round fight at San Jose, California's Civic Auditorium on Friday, November 12th. The matchup will be contested as the main event during a 14-bout "Strikeforce Kickboxing" card hosted by promoter Clay Brasuel.

At 30 years of age, Schwartz has emerged as one of the brightest competitors in professional kickboxing's full-contact genre, the rules of which permit kicks above the waistline as well as punches, including spinning backfists. The 6 foot 3 inch, San Mateo, California resident began his martial arts training at the young age of six when he took up the Japanese-rooted discipline of Taekwondo under the direction of trainers Chris Jensen and Debbie Pedersen. During his teenage years, he added former boxing and kickboxing champion, Eddie Croft, to his team in order to strengthen his western boxing skills. Schwartz, who has made five successful starts during Las Vegas, Nevada K-1 fight cards, was last seen in action during a March 12th Strikeforce Kickboxing card when he stopped fellow contender Shannon Ritch with a ferocious side kick in the opening round of action.

Bottone of Long Island, New York has carved out a dominant position in the sport of kickboxing during his outstanding, decade long professional career. His last world title defense came on September 21, 2001, when he gained a split decision win over veteran rival, Tony "TNT" Ventura in New York City. Bottone made his last start on September 11th of this year when he took part in a four-man, single-elimination tournament on Long Island, New York. After stopping his first opponent inside of two rounds, he fought Peter "F16" Keljavic to a draw during the championship round of action.

Tickets for the November 12th Strikeforce Kickboxing event are priced at $30, $50, and $100, respectively, and are available for purchase online at www.tickets.com. The event's preliminary bouts will begin at 5:30 PM Pacific Standard Time and the featured bouts will commence at 7 PM.

Strikeforce Kickboxing is a Bay Area, California-based martial arts fight promotion that hosts bouts contested under a variety of martial arts fighting rules including K-1, Full-Contact, Muay Thai, and San Shou. Launched in 1990, the distinguished organization has since promoted nearly every major kickboxing champion and contender and, in doing so, has played host to some of the most memorable matchups in the sport's history. Strikeforce fights have aired consistently on ESPN since 1994.

Thanks, PJ

I am very excited to be fighting in California again.

I am already in shape as I just fought and am already training very hard for this battle.

I have seen Brian fight A few times in Las Vegas and he is A sharp very left handed fighter so I am very much looking foward to the challenge.

These are the kind of fights that keep me excited about the sport .I wish there where more of them.

That is your choice, Do not watch the fight and it will not torture you. I take no offence at your opinions.

As most poeple on here know I love all fighting sports and compete in all as well.

My students and myself have fight in many different types of rules and let there be no mistake my hardest fights have been my full contact rules world title fights. There are very few people that can fight hard for 12 rds in any fight.

I have fought nothing but Low kick rules fights including A 12 rd low kick fight since 2001 due to not being able to fight in NY . I am very excited to be fighting against A very good ,strong fighter in his home town at his weight.

I learned A very long time ago that rules do not make a fighter or A style exciting the fighters make the fights great no matter what rules they are fighting. I equally enjoy all fights in any rules as long as it is a good fight. This is how we have always trained and I think this is why my fighters get to compete whenever they want to as they have the ability to fight just as good in all styles of fighting.

I have never understood why people feel the need to put down any other style from which they practice as it will not help them in any way.

If the fight brings attention to the sport and draws A crowd which will get to see other styles as well than this is good for the entire sport of kickboxing.

Good luck Tommy Bee, it should be a great fight. I can't wait.

GKCFiST - You're from the San Francisco bay area, right ? Have you ever been to one of these Strikeforce shows before ? They're not just Full Contact. They always have a variety of rules : FC, Muay Thai, International rules, San Shou - a little something for everyone. They're awesome. Even a world title fight, the 1st one in years. You should be supporting major events like this when they happen in your area and also supporting guys like Tommy Bee that travel a long ways to come out here and give it their all. Go check it out.
GKCFiST
Posted: 2004-10-13 02:20:25
Hey Gee Tee, to answer your question, yes I have been to those events. And when a full contact fight is coming up, majority of the people (including me of course) would go to the bathroom or buy hotdogs, food, beers, etc. If a full contact fight is on TV, I just change the channel and watch something else.

Tommy Bee, you're right about that. If people don't like full contact, they can just do themselves a favor and not watch it, very simple and no offense to anyone of course. Good luck though on your fight.

well said Farhad, I agree its the fighter that matters not the rules. I have laways fought anyone any rules and have a lot of admiration for Tommy for having the same value
legkick
Posted: 2004-10-13 11:22:51
Most of the people do NOT ignore the full contact fights at these events. They get just as much spectator support as all the other fights. A good fight is a good fight and the crowd will generally support action and drama and skill no matter what the rule style.

Good luck to the fighters.

Can you tell me. At most events in the UK now the promoters have someone recording them, and they make copies available on both VHS and DVD. Is this the case in the US and will this event be recorded??

I like to see any good events, and I can see maybe some exchanging going on between those of us on AX if we want to.

Anyway, if someone could answer this I would be grateful.

PS. I see the old MT v FC arguments go on in the US as well as the UK LOL.

Gee Tee
Posted: 2004-10-13 15:23:58
legkick is correct. The FC fights are sure as hell NOT ignored when they happen. I'd say the majority stay and watch, especially when Brian Schwartz is fighting. He is one of the most if not the most popular fighter here. The crowd goes absolutely nuts when he is fighting. I love watching all rule styles. legkick said it right - a good fight is a good fight regardless of rules.

GCK - If you'd rather spend your time in the bathroom or standing in line for 15-20 minutes for a crummy hot dog or overpriced beer instead of watching the FC fights, that's your choice, but you're missing out on some good action.

Colin Payne - The promoter tapes the event, but it probably won't be available to the general public. I've never seen them for sale anywhere. ESPN used to show all the Strikeforce events on tv, but they haven't for several years now.

Gee Tee, I don't think I'm missing out on any action cause a lot of people just can't stand full contact. Not trying to talk smack here but serious, a lot of people don't really like watching that.

Also every single time at an event when there's a full contact bout coming up, I see a lot of people get up out of their seats. Why do you think there's always a line at the food court and bathroom whenever a full contact bout is on? There's a reason. But of course, no offense to anyone. Just my 2 cent.
GKCFiST
Posted: 2004-10-13 19:35:43
Also, I heard full contact is a dying sport, so that's probably why a lot of people doesn't like to watch it. It's just plain boring in a lot of people's opinion.

I have seen Brian fight and he has A very good following as he is a strong fighter. This is why I want the fight.

legkick
Posted: 2004-10-13 23:04:07
I can pretty much guarantee the crowd will be yelling and screaming at this full contact fight just as much or more than the other fights. The last time I saw Schwartz fighting on one of these events the crowd was loving it and personally I thought it was one of the best fights of the night with two of the toughest athletes on the card.

These guys come here to promote their fight and all you can say over and over is that you don't like the rule style? Who cares, man. Plenty of people don't like each and every rule style out there. But hey I ain't talkin smack and no offense and just do your own thing and peace and love brother.
Lightning Mike Angove
Posted: 2004-10-13 23:56:13
I come from a Thai background, and aren't neccessarily a fan of FC but - I'll always watch it.

The guys now days are much better with their hands and the kicks by the top fighters are spectacular - the best guys at FC are real athletes and any top sportsman can apreciate the skill level of another top athlete. Kind of like Rugby vs Rugby League in NZ.

We all get a little too style orientated on AX from time to time, ultimately although I have my personal preference (for thai and K-1 rules), my ultimate preference is for a bloody good fight - regardless of style.

At the end of the day a kick in the head is a kick in the head - after wearing one you won't be asking which style / rule set it was sanctioned by you'll just be picking your ass up off the ground,

One of my favorite fights was Ernesto Hoosts FC fight against Rick Roufus where he broke Rick down and KO'd him at his own game in the 11th (I think)...

Good Luck Tommy and all the guys on this promotion

legkick - Amen, you said it right. When Schwartz and Bottone get in that ring, those fans will be in their seats. Speaking of boring fights on these shows, a couple of the most boring Strikeforce fights I can remember weren't FC. One featured a well known MMA fighter taking on a well established local fighter under MT rules. The fight was so one sided in favor of the MMA fighter it was boring. The other was the main event of the evening and featured a local World Champion from the Bay Area in a MT rules fight. Neither fighter wanted to mix it up and it was very boring, very little action at all. The fans were booing pretty much the whole fight. I had never seen these fans boo like this ever, and it was a big name local fighter they were jeering. There were several FC fights that night and none drew the negative crowd reaction that this fight did. And I'm not biased towards FC either. I like the International rules fights the best. The fighters make the fight not the style or rules.

Lightining Mike - Well said - I second that.

Gotta cheer on Brian in this one cuz he's a Bay Area boy. Plus, Brian's fights are usually pretty exciting for FC rules. Hope you've trained hard for this one, Tommy. From what I've seen, dude hits hard and he's got a wicked sidekick that've dropped quite a few opponents.

Hey Abe , That is cool that you are sin support of Brian.

He is A very good fighter and I am looking foward to getting it on.

I will be very ready for this fight.

I have seen Brian fight and he has very good kicks and decent boxing ability. I have been in the ring with some of the best kickers in History such as Don wilson and Ken Hewski above and have fouhth some of the hardest punchers in the game of there time.
I have even fougth A fighter which is taller than Brain "Erik Regan" so there is not much that I am not prepared for . The question will be has he ever foguht anyone like me before.
I can guarantee the people will get there money worth for this fight. You will see 2 fighters at the top of there game both coming to win a very important fight in there career.

i totally agree. tommy told me a long time ago that it doesnt matter what style your fighting. a good fighter, is a good fighter. thats why he spends so much time training in all different styles of the game. that concept has also dissipated all of that "which style is the best" brainwashing that many of us has been subject to throughout the years. whether it be kicking someone in the legs or kicking someones head, we should practice it all.

hey bee. nice pics. my arm is still hurting from that spinning back kick you threw. after we worked the pads i was teaching my girlfriend how to do a hip throw. she freaked out when my legs went up in the air, so she let go and dropped me on my head. it's been a very painful day for me.

I just returned from California.

I want to congradulate Brian schwartz on his victory.

I guess it may have looked like we where noit willing to committ. The thruth is that brian did a very good job of using his height advantage as he is 6"3 and has an awesomwe side kick. He stuck to his game plan by utulizing the side kick to keep me at bay for the entire fight.
I trasined very herd for this fight and just could not get my plan into motion as I tried harder in each round in many different ways to make it into a fight but he would not alter his plan and he won.
he caught me 2 times early in the fight which stunned me and I got up to fight hard and tried to close the gap.
After the 5 rd i thought that i was getting closer to him and just could not get himn to stay and fight. he did a great job of side kick and move. I was blocking most shots and avoiding them after rd 6 but could not nail him down. believe me I tried.
i was getting to him in the last few rounds but it was too late at that point.

Brian deserves alot of credit for sticking to his plan and winning.
I want to thank ken hewski,Kadir kadri ,and peter keljavic, for helping me with this fight.

I did my best and will learn from the experience.
