14th May judging course, 15th May fights.

I will be holding a judging course run by Tony Myers at my gym in Bury, Lancs on Saturday 14th May. Most people on hear Know Tony and his credentials so I won't over sell him and the course.

The day after I will be promoting a fight show at the Heywood Civic Centre, mainly novices but a couple of A/B class fights on as well.

Anybody interestd in either please don't heistate to contact me at

As a GFC student/instructor, I'll definitely be attending both.

It'll be good to meet some of you regular axers at either one.

The show will mainly be novice and c class, there aren't enough shows around for people to start. Got a couple of fights on, martin Shivnan v Daniel Walsh (king's gym, Bradford). Laura Craig/Stevenson v Channel Borgan. Looking to match Andy Thrasher also.

PS can I bring a real thai boxer from up here, Nick Hewitson (see fighters magazine thread) Basil's a big fan and wants his autograph and wants to talk to him about his 1500 fights without a loss. He also wants his training secrets so he can build up such a manly thai boxers body that will take the impact of a juggernaught.

Im there too Basil, looks like a good line up, shame that Andy Thrasher aint fighting now though, and the Shivnon Vs Welsh fight wouldve been good to see, one of our lads saw Danny Welsh out in Bradford though last week and he said he had mumps so i had my doubts as to wheter he would still be fioghting or not. Good luck to all the Badcompany lot on the show, ill be there hurling abuse at one and all.lol.

Obviously I'm gutted that Andy can't fight on this show, but there is no way he can get in the ring at the moment, not and put up a performance worthy of him.

Still trying to find a replacement for Daniel to fight martin. Possability of Billy Waterworth doing it. Billy had a five round war with Danny Brown last year, who is ranked number 2 at Lightweight! Just trying to sort it out.

Still got 14 fights on,

and the good news

Master Woody (siam Orchid in Manchester) is doing the Thai food. Same person
who does Master A, so mark lee isn't allowed in till ahlf way through the show to make sure that others get a luck in.

Billy Waterworth is a tough fighter, he's been in with Michael Dicks, Alex Sneddon and had a war with Danny Brown last year. Apart from getting stopped in 30 secs by Liam Harrison Martin hasn't realy mixed in that class, tough test but Martin wants the fight!!

I will keep this updated if any last minutes changes or additions are made so it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

On King Street in Blackburn, they used to have over 50 pubs.
It was apparently the longest pub crawl in the country.
I work just off King Street, and not many of them exist anymore.

Darwen (where i live) has loads of pubs. Around 50 (although some have been demolished now, and some are just closed), and we're only a small town (population 30,000, that's about 1 pub for every 600 people! :-) )

I've just got back from the judging course at the gym and want to say how exellent it was, I learnt a lot more than I thought I would in such a short space of time. I really think that if anyone involved in Muay Thai at all gets the chance to do a course like this, they really should jump at the chance. As Tony said during the seminar: How would you win a game of football if, the only way you were winning is by kicking the ball towards one end of the pitch, not really knowing that the only time you scored was when you got the ball between the posts? You just couldn't compete with a team (or a fighter) who knew the rules of the game when you didn't.

Thanks again to Tony for lending his expertise.
dazzathethai
Posted: 2005-05-14 13:22:29
Have to agree with Basil, the course was excellant! I will say with out fear of being wrong there are LOTS of people out there who think they know how to judge Muay Thai as it is in thailand and do Not. Everyone should do this course!

How can you coach a fighter if you ddo not realy know what scores?

Thank you to everyone who was there and supported helped with the show. Most promoters will tell you it is harder to put on a show with mainly novices, b class fighter know how to look after themsleves, they know how to make weight etc etc, but this kind of show has to be done or else where will the lads (and lasses) make their first step

Big thank you to Billy Waterworth who took the fight at such short notice after such a big lay off!

A big thank you to Dazza for putting on the judging seminar, and for those who attended. We were well looked after in sunny Heywood, even though all the pubs there were full of people even older than me. I would like to say a special thank you on behalf of Liam for arranging the hen party at the hotel; it was above and beyond the call of duty.

On the show there were some well matched and exciting fights and although the majority of fights were mostly novice bouts, the show was well run and well attended. Congratulations to Martin Shivnan who capitalised fully on Billy Waterworth's low guard and hit him with some tremendous punches. Even though Billy has had a lay off he is a tough lad and not easy to stop, so very well done.

The fights were ace to watch, especially seeing the GFC lads tear up the place in fine fashion.

Mike Williams - Points win, Mike came out of the blocks fast, boxing hard to force an 8 count in the second (if I remember correctly), it was a close fight after the final round, but a great win for Mike in his first fight.

Ste Conlon - TKO Loss, but in no way disgraced himself absolutely refused to go down even though he was taking a lot of punishment towards the end.

Ryan Mercer - Points win in a hard fight against a good opponent, Ryan's knees were the difference between the two fighters.

Martin Shivnan - TKO Second round. How Billy managed to stay up after taking some of those early shots amazed me. Great result for Shivsy and once again, kudos to Billy for stepping up to take the fight at short notice.

Scott Quigg - Points win. What can I say, came into the ring with a big grin on his face and was explosive from the first bell to the last. Scott's opponent, James Dean, wasn't for standing there and taking it all, though and fought back well, busting Scott's nose, but ultimately it just wasn't enough.

Well done to everybody who took part in any way whatsoever, but especially the fighters, as whatever your result, you all had the balls to step into the ring in the first place, so none of you have anything to be ashamed of. Kudos.

I got some decent shots of nearly all of the fights, I'll post them up later.

It was good to finally meet some of you regular axers I've not met before, Tony Myres, Liam 'Boakow boy', Liam Harrison and Richard 'Noi666' Cadden; plus some of you who I already know, Callum and the exiled Sandy Holt. See you all again at some other shows in the near future.

I really enjoyed myself yesterday. Really good show, even though the fighters on were mostly novices.
Quite a few bloodied noses.

Commiserations to John Banner from Bolton, who got knocked out after just 30 seconds of his fight. He seemed really gutted.
But congratulations to Ricky Swift who did the opppsite.

I met fellow Rover, Buakow Boy on the way out too, but i was dying for a slash, so didn't get a chance to talk proper.

Saw a couple of the Bad Company crew zipping around too, but didn't get a chance to meet them, Mr C stuffing his face with a massive plate of curry (great curry too). Doesn't look quite as orange in the flesh. ;-)

Sounds like a top show, gutted I couldn't make it.

calmck says "Commiserations to John Banner from Bolton, who got knocked out after just 30 seconds of his fight. He seemed really gutted.''

Don't let it get you down Bruce theres tons of people loose their first couple of fights then go on to great things. Just keep strong and training hard for the next one. It takes the world supply of bottle just to get in the ring in the first place. I only got the txt off sandy saying how you had done this morning otherwise I would have given you a ring yesterday to see how you were doing. (I was busy sleeping all yesterday afternoon after a gruelling hikeing trip). We'll have the crack when I'm down Bolton for Sandys next interclub until then be proud of yourself for getting in there and remember never give up.
