Topic:Doolan V Rung World Title Is On! Sep14 Glasgow
guy caledonian
Posted: 2008-08-18 08:16:49
Undefeated Scottish Muay Thai champ James Doolan challenges ISKA World champion Rung in Glasgow, on September 14, in Oran Mor. There is a full supporting card including some of the best Scottish talent taking on the English.

This thread is only going to address the muay thai bouts on the card, please go off topic for all others.

James disposed of his last challenger with a devastating 2nd round k.o of alan jamieson, who has previously fought rung at the first p.o.s. show, with rung winning by a v. close points decision, this is shaking up to be a belter of a fight, and worth the ticket money on its own. The muay thai support card brings yet more quality to the event -
Tommy Young v Wayne Fisher
Jojo Calderwood v Christi Campbell
Jordan Calder v Scott Dixon
Mitchell Flett v Dave Nicol
Ryan Hurley v Conor macEwan
plus more tbc....

Thanks to paul hennessey for ISKA sanction.

As James Doolan is a relative novice, I will go with Rung to retain his title.
I accept that James may have done very well in his sub-ten fight record, and I understand that he has dynamite in his fists, *but so long Rung is training for this, I think it will only go one way. Chokdee Rung!
(*Note the terms and conditions to this bold statement!) :)

Good luck to Tommy, Jo-jo and Jordan.
With Jordan coming off a great win at Lumpinee Stadium, I look forward to seeing this emerging star go from strength to strength.

I agree with Noi666, this fight will go only one way.
KO win for Doolan inside three rounds.

It's bound to be a cracking fight either way.

Best of luck to Tommy, Jordan, Jojo & James

I spent some time with rung before and after his fight at the leeds show, and he knows he's going to have to train for this one, he's seen doolan fight and knows that his cardio is going to have to be on the ball. We've had problems getting james matched as he's 15 and 0 in kick and thai boxing, and his other past-time that the off topic thread mentions, he's 14 and 3. Ultimately, this is a meritocracy and as undefeated (and unchallenged) national champ, he has a right to contest a world title. As a promoter I'm really excited to see the bout take place. I also appreciate the risk rung is taking in putting his title on the line, and giving james the chance to put his flag on the map.

Post script to stevie nisbet...you'll be picking up the hotel tab for rung then?? :-)

Tickets are on sale and going fast, any fighters wishing to obtain tix, please get in touch, or ask your coach to do so, regards, guy.

Doolan should be in rankings surely? where will he slot in?
guy caledonian
Posted: 2008-08-19 09:32:13
yeah, he should be, part of the problem is a geographical one - if you're fighting outwith uk scene its difficult to get the u.k rankings, as most people are ' who the hell is...'. doolan is scot champ at 63.5kg,so he's no.1 in scotland, i've spoken with paul hennessey to remedy this, so hopefully we'll see james on the rankings board. this fighter has got so much to offer the thai scene, i'd hate to lose him to the dark side, but you have to go with the match ups you can get.
r.e the iska title - rung's title is at 64kg, but a gentleman's agreement has been reached, and they have agreed to fight at 62kg, nearer rung's natural fighting weight.

Stu, i've kept your tix, no worries.

we're going to film this with local production and hopefully shoutfight will take on the footage - budget reasons as the venue is small, not enough bums in seats at the mo,this is a co-promo with the dark side, but we hope to get the shoutfight squad up for dougie macadam and tommy young's event oct 26th in glasgow. there we go, first plug dougie!
if any shoutfight staff can make it up for the crack, they'll be welcome! (vinny...)

There are no tix left. at all. unless we get some returns on sat at weigh-in, or sunday a.m, they are all gone. which is great....good for us, good for the sport, we could have possibly gone to a 1,000+capacity for this card...onwards and upwards for sportfight scotland. It's created a great buzz locally, celebs and journalists showing a healthy interest too. Now if only my phone would stop ringing and i could stop shi**ing myself.

A huge thank you to Pete Feeley and his Spartans for filling the gap as Wayne from Carlisle had to pull out with injury. Dan Hadfield will now be fighting Tommy Young which will be a cracking match - both lads are strong and technically great. The majority of Dan's fights have been in Thailand (I think).
Thanks Pete, safe journey to Glasgow.

As a promoter and coach it's difficult to maintain a diplomatic balance, particularly when you train with the guys that are fighting on the same event. I've deleted this post three times already, that little voice in my head telling me to let it go, don't rise to the bait, the other louder voice telling me to go for it...i'm going to make an assumption about the last post- that'll be the doolan rung fight you are talking about? If it was a mixed m.a v thai boxing, then the rules would be somewhere in between. They're not. It's a muay thai match. Between two muay thai champions. Scored under muay thai criteria. Novice aggression?? what the f..k are you on about? hoho that must be rung you're on about? because doolan is one of the most composed, technically precise strikers, in all ranges, that i have had the pleasure to get a kicking off. rant over. actually, there's more, doolan has been in rings and cages 32 times, aggressive? yes, but then that's fighting for you.novice? get the f..k out of here. if i have assumed wrong, please forgive me, i'm a little stressed.
guy caledonian
Posted: 2008-09-10 15:57:02
urg! now my post looks like the rantings of a madman - the previous post that gave me the rage has been deleted. the above post was directed purely at them, no-one else, either on the show, or uninvolved. I got a few txt msgs gently warning me off as the post was made by a troll.grrr. I fell for it. So...back to the plot!...this show is going to be rocking, i'm getting a few returns this week, so if you are needing tix, let me know, we may have 5-10 coming back.

Oh Brian Brian Brian.....i hate to say i told you so.....but,lol. Good little show, fight of the night was jojo vs christi, christi never stops she's outragously fit. was a close fight in my oppinion if you took away that alot of the sweeps and trips from the clinch where fouls, hooking leg around. a great performance though, she is defo 1 of the best girls at that weight and proved it today. Rungs the man, not to take anything away from doolan but you could see the big difference in class from the start, and the cut was hideous, even worse than the 1 he gave cadden at town hall.

Tommy Young won. Was a tremendous match up with a lot of respect between two ludicrously fast fighters. A joy to watch such a technical thai bout.

Jojo is a great fighter and took the a split decision on the night. Fair enough. For what its worth, I felt Christi edged it, being the stronger fighter in rounds 3,4 and 5. Jojo definitely faded as the fight went on. Hey ho, thats just my opinion and its what close fights are made from!
However, for us the fight was ruined by the ref allowing illegal heel hook trips. It wasn't the occasional one, it was constant throughout the fight - four or five of them in every round. From memory, only one of the heel hooks actually struck Christies standing leg away, the rest were trips. I have no idea if the judges gave Jojo credit for the trips but regardless, it made a huge difference in the grapple where Christi's strength and especially knees to the head were spoiled every time. Add to that, the confidence Jojo must have felt with her corner and the audience roaring their approval. If the ref had have warned Jojo not to trip, the fight may not even have gone the distance. We will never know.

For my part, I complained (shouted!) to the ref throughout the fight., and in in between rounds I assured Christi that the trips were illegal and not to be disheartened by them. Afterwards, I asked the ref if he felt the trips legal? The conversation went: word for word
me "Were those heel trips legal?"
ref "You are not allowed to do judo style hip throws"
me "Yes, ok, but what about those heel trips?"
ref "You are not allowed to intentionally land on your opponent"
me "Ok?"
short silence
me " So were those heel trips legal?"
The ref smiles and shrugs and I take it that the question has been answered.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not contesting the result - it was a close fight and Christi enjoyed it. And I'm not having a go at Jojo, I'm certain she would have stopped tripping if the ref had told her. My complaint is to the application of the rules (or possibly my understanding of them?). I like the ref, its not a personal thing, and he has a huge amount of experience but someone was wrong. I will be writing an official letter of complaint to the sanctioning body and will be asking for a breakdown from the chief judge. This will be done in private with the sole aim of helping me to be the best coach I can. After all, if the sanctioning body says they are legal, Ive got to start training them too!

Thanks to Guy and his team (esp Hillary for ferrying us round), your hospitality was relaxed and impeccable. It was a great show. We would love to be invited back :-)

Rungs elbows were awesome. The stuff of nightmares!

Tommy youngs technique is text book, very nice to watch, also as was his oppoenent danny from spartan!!! was a great match up and close fight they were like watching clones of each other!
Jo and christi was one of best female fights ive seen, fitness, desire to win, technique was all amazing!
Jordan Calder and his opponent was also a close fight Jordan gave him too much time and space and nearly payed for it in the 2nd round when he got caught with an amazing jumping knee, the other boy was very tough but jordan could have made the fight much easier as he scored very well when he wanted with the big kicks....sort it out fagman lol...hope you were careful washing your face and dint nearly spark yourself ha ha..
Thanks to guy for having us there always a pleasure to see the caledonian guys who seem to be gettin better all the time...was very dissapointed brian dint where his coat tho :(

Well done Guy and the Caley crew

Danny Hadfield's dad was one of the first UK fighters to fight in Thailand, very very long time ago. I know from speaking to Pete after he (Danny) fought on one of my shows that there was a bit of a contrast in style between what his dad wanted him to do and what Pete wanted him to do. Seams to have sorted itself out.

Yet more confusion on legal and illegal techniques, this needs sorting!!!!! See the scoring criteria thread

i'll post fully later, but absolutely understand the concern for reffing / judging needs to be brought into a consistent line..i only spoke with the head judge, and he discounted any of the 'trips' in scoring, but i think some judges may look to the ref for pointing these out and/ or warning fighter before the judges make record. yeah, we should all check the muay thai scoring criteria thread and sort it out..i'll try not to get moderated by swearing at the sexist drivel that appeared in that thread this time! i was rendered inarticulate by the bigoted postulations of two axers who ought to know better...anyway, post later once i know everybody is back home safe, and all my people are good. cheers.

guy if you had ignored NMTs post and read the later post on judging etc you would have seen it said decent females the same as decent kids for 5x2 min rounds decent as in technique and ability not looking. Anyhow who was refereeing and judging this as i didnt get a chance to see it but heard a fair few reports, when is dvd available? thanks.

just to add my ten pence worth, was a great show really enjoyed all the fights and love going up to glasgow for Guy's shows, thanks for asking me bud! Myself and Guy discussed the scoring at lenght throughout the event after i thought some of the decisions went the wrong way or were slightly off. All the heel hook trips were discounted by myself and i actually punished jojo for repeatedly executing them in the either round 4 or 5 (cant remeber now)and gave it a 10/9 the other way. Both girls fought really well and it was nonstop, I scored this a draw! I know there are discrepencies when judging but i think 50/46 to jojo was ridiculous, im not mentioning names but i cant see how that came up from the fight I watched. Tommy and Dan's fight was brilliant and technically the best of the night for me, well done to both. Also brilliant shot by rung to finish it in the 2nd. Jordan never looked to be struggling (bar the knee to the head) oops! but didnt seem his normal self to me, well done to Jack Roberts on a good peformance. well done to all great day.

The post above is rather interesting, are thai judges allowed to penalise fighters for what they perceive as fouls even if the ref lets it go?

Not asking for malicious means, just curious about thai scoring which still confuses the hell out me!
noi666
Posted: 2008-09-15 15:29:28
If I judge, and someone persistantly fouls, I will penalise a fighter even if the ref lets it go. Its part of the basic scoring.
Either the fighter who scores cleanly, on target and with effect OR the fighter who fouls less will win the round.

I remember judging once and one guy kept on grabbing the ropes, hyper-extending the back in the clinch and hip-tossing.....he was blatently the stronger fighter, but due to the fact of him persistantly fouling I gave it to the other fighter.

Thanks for clearing that up as it's quite substantially different from MMA (where the referee is the only one who can dock points for a foul), there does seem to be some confusion though as to whether the "trips" Jo used were legal or not however, is it not the case that if the top of the foot/shin is used in a kicking motion then it is not illegal? It seems to indicate here http://www.muaythaionline.org/disciplines/judgefouls.html that is the case.

Good scoring craig i gave it same as you, taking trips away gave it a draw in my eye's. Saying that though i don't think jojo was her normal self either, wasnt in as good as shape as normal so maybe struggled a little lossing last bit of weight, i also think thats why she was fooked in last 2 rounds she was tired where as christi looked like she had only just got going, her fitness is mental. Well done both girls best fight ive seen in a long time female wise and would be an awesome rematch that has just gotta happen. Well done guy with the show and thanks for having us.
