Topic:Power Of Scotland 8, The Lagoon, 1st May '10
Gary O'Brien
Posted: 2010-03-26 12:41:36

Power Of Scotland 8 returns to the Lagoon Arena on Saturday 1st May 2010. The Lagoon has proved to be a great venue for POS and the setup just adds to the great fight action!
Some cracking young Scottish talent again taking centre stage on the event as normal, here is some of the International main fights!

A Class

  • John Dick (GTBA, SCOTLAND) Vs. Davy Mac (Bad Company, ENGLAND) (56kg)

  • John Dick needs no introduction to the POS crowd, the current No.1 Featherweight in the UK, STBA Scottish Champion, IKF British Champion, ISKA British Champion is set to defend his UK No.1 spot in the rankings, as he defends the challenge of fellow Scot Davy Mac, who has now relocated to Leeds and now trains in the top UK gym, Bad Company. This fight has been in the making for the last year as Davy has risen to contend the No. 1 spot and there is sure to be fireworks when it finally gets under way.

  • Kieran McAskill (POS Fight Team, SCOTLAND) Vs. Gerald Smith (Bridgestone, IRELAND) (54kg)

  • Kieran McAskill, the up and coming young local fighter is currently ranked No.4 in the UK independent rankings and after 3 strong performances at the last 3 POS events and winning the ISKA British title against Darren Whewell in his last outing. He now faces Gerald Smith from Dublin, who comes to the ring with a strong pedigree behind him, as the Bridgestone fighters always come to fight and have excellent technique.

  • Jordan Calder (Caledonian, SCOTLAND) Vs. Mouni Nasri (Fatih Meric, FRANCE) (56kg)

  • Jordan is a future star in the sport and this with a great junior pedigree and collection of titles to his name. He is now making waves in the senior rankings and again takes on nternational opposition on the POS stage. This clinical young Scot can finish a fight with a variety of techniques, so don’t blink! He again takes on international opposition on the POS stage as he faces Nasri.

    B Class

  • Ritchie Hocking (NKT, SCOTLAND) Vs. Naoise Creven (Bridgestone, IRELAND) (80kg)

  • Hocking is one of the most poular fighters to ever fight on POS and has fought on every POS event. Since POS1 this teenager has grown 10 inces and put on 18kg and transformed into a monster of a fighter. Combined with his great technical ability, Hocking is now ready to climb the UK Rankings and start challenging for titles. On POS8 he will take on another International challenger from the very well regarded Bridgestone gym in Dublin, who always produce very talented and tough fighters.

  • Alan Weaver (NAMT) Vs. Aaron O’Callaghan (Siam Warriors, IRELAND) (56kg)

  • Alan Weaver is becoming one of the best up and coming fighters in the Scottish Muay Thai scene, he is currently training and fighting in Thailand, so it will be interesting to see his first performance back on home soil. He takes on a very skillful fighter from Cork in Aaron O’Callaghan in a fight that offers an interesting clash of styles.

  • JoJo Calderwod (Caledonian, SCOTLAND) Vs. Ferial Amweerodien (Bridgestone, IRELAND) (53kg)

  • JoJo makes her POS debut and puts her unbeaten record on the line against another International fighter in Ferial Amweerodien. JoJo is a very aggressive fighter who can end fights clinically, but when fighting any fighter from the Irish gym you can always expect a tough fight!

POS8 will run from 6-11pm, with doors opening at 5pm. Tickets go on sale this month and can be purchased from any of the fighters on the show or you can visit the Lagoon, Musclebound on New Street in Paisley. You will also be able to buy them through www.tickets-scotland.com. Or alternatively call me on 07790 788 368 for tickets, info or to book Ringside tickets . Seating is unreserved apart from the Ringside, so basically first there on the day will get pick of the seats and you’ll have the flexibility to sit in groups etc. However, the last three events at the Lagoon have practically been sell outs, so get in quick.

Tickets are separated into 3 bands, Ringside (£50), Tiered (£25) and Standard (£20 for adults and £10 for Under 16’s). Ringside tickets offer close proximity seating, some food and waitress service. The majority of the tables have already been taken, so please get in touch asap if you are planning on taking one.

For regular updates on the event, check out the website: www.powerofscotland.com, which will be updated regularly as the event develops. Thank you to everyone that has helped so far!

    Thanks Guys!

The show is still getting professionally filmed with a 3 Camera setup as normal and will be put onto DVD and looking at some other options. The reason it isn't on P4TV is purely a business decision, their was a significant increase in the quote to cover the show and my records have shown a fair decrease in non-locals travelling to come and see the show. I personally used to go to about 8-10 shows a year down south, now I only go the the big ones, as most of the other good shows I can watch from my house the following week in good quality. So should still have a mic for your Rab! LOL

Liam, well done on your fight, you were amazing mate! Will prob post on the MSA thread later if not tomorrow. You are class mate and always amazed how you keep evolving, hope you get to do part 3 in Raja! :)

To much to do tonight, but will try and post a couple more fights tomorrow at some point! Still a couple more of the C class undercard fights to confirm and that should be it pretty much done.

Just to let everyone know, the demand for Ringside tables is the busiest I've had yet and all have been reserved but not all confirmed, so if you were thinking about it let me know, as it should be sold out. Plenty of Tiered and standard though.

    Hi Gary,

Looks like a class show. All three of our Bridgestone fighters looking forward to it and all determined to put on a good show, Ferial visa problem all sorted out so she is looking forward to her clash with Jojo. Have kitted them each out with a spare petrol can and a tow rope for trip from airport just as a precaution, hee, hee.

    See you soon mate.

    Paul.

Sorry I've not kept everyone updated, but everyone has been annoying me to get full lineup on here, so will get it up today. Adjustment to above is that Alan Weaver's fight is actually A Class now, everything else remains unchanged above.

Ringside Tables are now sold-out for this event, so looking as if its going to be a busy night!

John Dick vs Stephen Meleady was a close and competitive fight. Its unfair to say that stephen stopped him "pretty easily"

meleady walked through everything and had won every round til it was stopped.

meleady walked through everything and had won every round til it was stopped. you want my bet then??????????
    Raj Singh
    Posted: 2010-04-20 03:50:25
Disagree with you there, it was a close fight till John pulled out before the 5th and no way was it won easily. Yeah i'll take your bet, £20 on John to win and remain UK's number 1!
    AndyBC
    Posted: 2010-04-20 04:25:54
Raj you was there obviously yeah? As was I and thai boxing scoring Stephen walking it, john went backwards from start to finish, nothing he did hurt Stephen, he walked through every shot therefore not showing effect or scoring, and Stephen was landed hard shots knocking john back and off balance all the way and then stopped him.

Davy and stephen was a close run thing but Davy had a big 3rd and last round and took it was an amazing fight. So your taking my £20 bet then yeah?? I'll take your cash off ya no worries :)

I think the problem that John's had, is that he's not he a decent challenger over the past few year, Stephen Meleady was a wake up call for him and i'm sure he'll prove why he's the no1

    Thanks guys!

Don't worry mugger, my lads aren't underestimating any of you guys! Ritchie might have the advantage in terms of ring time, but is still only 18 years old fighting strong developed men, coupled with what I would expect of any Bridgestone or any Irish fighter for that matter, we're expecting a very tough fight! Every Irish fighter we've had over has been tough as hell and has been strong with excellent technique and have won the vast majority of the fights over the years. However, the big yin is looking good in training, he always does to be fair, so should be a top bout. Kieran is also looking good now, had some injury concerns left over from last summer and had to delay his training a bit, but looks 10% now and has quickly got his fitness up and his eye in, so looks like a tasty match with Gerald or Brian! LOL. Both lads actualy met a couple of years ago and Farmer asked about a future match, so I know he's had Kieran in his sights, so again, expecting him to be going into win. I don't think Paul puts them in unless he thinks they can take it! LOL.

John and Davy will be a good fight and just good to get it on, as its been in the works for a while now! Strange that John is defending the rank and seems to be tipped in Davy's favour in terms of odds. The only thing is John likes to be the underdog, so going to be interesting!

Interesting to see how Alan Weaver will have changed after his time in Thailand aswell!

Just as John Dick got in the ring someone set the fire alarm off. We all had to evacuate and stand in the car patk for about 30 minutes. It was already 12.30am. Police and fire brigade were there and eventually gave the all clear.

Both guys still wanted to fight and it was a right scrap!it must have been really hard for the guys to stay up for the fight after standing in the car park for half an hour not knowing whether they were fighting or not. There was onl
y a small crowd so a lot of the atmosphere had gone but it took nothing away from the fight.

Davy was great and John is a very strong tough fighter - well done to both guys for getting back in.

As the circumstances were so unusual and it was such a great fight we will offer a rematch as soon as John and his camp want it.
Other than the drunken idiots and the fire alarm it was a great show. Well done to Gary OBrien for putting it together.

Well done to Jordan Calder on another great performance. I was also very impressed by Kieren MacAskill.

i left early as im not feeling too good.i also took the car so was sober and one thing i did notice was the atmosphere in the crowd was changing the more people were drinking.i personally dont think drink should be part of a show bcoz the people mostly getting drunk are neds who come along to watch a fight without knowing anything about muaythai.as i said i left early but saw about 8 fights and i thot out those fights the boy with the pink shorts(sorry dont know his name)looked a good fighter and i thot the derek v timucin fight was excellent.

Just a quick post to say well done to all the fighters and thanks for everyones hard work and support! There was so much that changed in this event and I was let down a little bit but have to take the responsability for the delays earlier in the show, which ended up making it a long night, that won't happen next time. Not sure what happened with the fire alarm yet, but was a nightmare and it was a shame it ruined the night! That is actually when the little fight started and probably the reason for it, but it was sorted within about 10secs by the security as I was just next to it. For John and Davy to then go out and come back in and put on such a great was amazing. Both agreed to do a rematch under better circumstances, which I think was the fairest thing to do.

From a coaching perspective, I was very proud of my team last night! We had 12 fighters training for fight sover the last month, so everyone really pulled together to help each other which was great! Jay, Scott & Jamie done really well and listened to our advice to get some good wins. I thought Marc looked like a different fighter, only been training with me for a couple of months and he thought he was a boxer before, but showed great Muay Thai skills against a much more experienced fighter and was well in front, just got caught flush with a few heavy shots, but at 17 he is going to just get better! Chris just didn't turn up last night and was a bit of a mental battle for him to finish the fight, but was very pleased he did against a talented fighter in Jason Dick.

Big Ritchie was excellent again, very skillful performance from such a big lad, using all his tools, brilliant! Wee Kieran was amazing, Muay Thai Porn IMO! So proud of them all! Thanks to Tam and Joe for their work with the guys, absolutely love my team!

Just want to say thanks to Gary for having me on the show and treating us all brilliantly, huge thanks to john and his team for giving me the fight and opportunity to fight for the number 1 spot, couldnt meet a better guy than John and the rematch will definatley happen as i dont think either of us fought anywhere near our capabilities.
Biggest thanks has to go to everyone at the gym that trained me not only for this fight but for all my fights since i moved down, love you all!! thanks so much to Richard, Andy and Lisa for coming up and Brian Calder for his help not only in the corner yesterday but for everything over the last 5 years or so, sorry i nevr really listened to anything yesterday lol!
Jordan you were amazing i heard and are a stick on to be a world champ one day and i cant wait.
Great weekend with the Irish guys as usual and hopefully catch up soon enough!!
sorry for long post!!..........huge thanks to uncle vince as well for EVERYTHING x

Yeah, got to echo some of the comments above...
Kieran looked brilliant and another solid performance from Big Ritchie.

The Irish lads (and lass) were a great bunch of folk, really hope to work with you all again.

Jojo was brilliant as usual and young Jordan Calder once again showed why he is definitely the UK's NEXT BIG THING.

I couldn't believe it when the alarm went off just as John was about to step through the ropes, I thought that some greater force was at work and that the John Dick v Davy Mac fight was not meant to happen.

The respect John and Davy have for eachother is really nice to see.
When we were out in the carpark, I suggested to Davy to jump into my car to keep warm, we were sitting there with the heater on when he saw John standing in the cold...he said "Dougie, go and invite John in to keep warm, he'll be f**king freezing out there"
Quite a surreal moment, the two guys sitting in the car chatting with their robes and mongkols on, haha. Pair of mentalists.

Glad they've agreed to rematch, whichever way the fight went, I thought there was grounds for a rematch anyway.

Thanks again to Gary for having me present the show.

Finally, a HUGE thank you to everyone who came back in for the last fight. I'd guess there was little more than a hundred there. Everyone came ringside and between us we created what I think was the best atmosphere of the night.

Well if that ain't sportsmanship then god knows what is. Pretty classy. Although the two of them in the car all geared up had to be a Kodak moment. No one think?? LOL

Davy is a great guy and I think the world of him. To see his opponent in the cold in the car park and suggest that he comes into the cars just shows what class he has. Its also what I love about this sport.
For both guys to still be prepared to fight when it was 1AM and they'd cooled down completely shows what warriors they both are. A lot just wouldnt have been up for fighting at all.

The fight itself was one of the best I've seen and shows how good they both are.

Another thing I'd like to say is how well Dougie the MC (Fight Sport MC) handled it. Most of the crowd went home when the alarms went off and the atmosphere at first was pretty flat. There were probably only a hundred or so left and its a big arena. However Dougie kept the atmosphere up and did a really good job.

Its also worth mentioning the judges and referee and everyone working at the show and the venue who all stayed late and did a good job to keep the show going.

Really enjoyed the night. Some good fights and some excellent production value! Jojo's fight was great. Just pure domination! Jordans fight.. well what can i say was amazing. Always good to see him fight. Absolutely brutal leg kicks! Congrats! Looking forward to seeing who steps up for his next fight. Also, one of the C class fights was an all out war. Lots of punishment given and taken by both fighters. I wish I could recall the fighters (as i'd love to see the fight again) to give them the credit they are due. In fact there were a few really good C class fights (a belter of a knockout) but I can't recall them all (long night!) Overall, it was an awesome night. Also, the MC was great.

    On the downside:
There were far to many steaming neds shouting abuse at the fighters and generally looking for fights themselves. I think the barstaff should have nipped this in the bud and not served anyone already drunk. It really punished the atmosphere. The late start meant a late finish. Some fighters looked like friends in the ring and their fights suffered. Once we were all papped outside we had no idea what was going on and ended up going home missing the last two fights. Gutted! Especially as these were A class fights that we were really looking forward to! I know it was probably some drunk ned who hit the fire alarm so the organisers can't take the blame but i hope whoever did it got a kicking as that was some of my hard earned money down the pan!

I'm glad to hear the fights went ahead and have a lot of respect for the fighters for fighting after being frozen outside! Overall, a big congrats to all the fighters who left it all in the ring.
