SuperShowDown Glasgow Bonfire Night 2011

Its over 400yrs since a mad Scotsman? ;-) living in York tried to blow up half of london.

Now this year another Scotsman plans to blow the MuayThai Scene Apart in the UK with the next SuperShowDown event to be held @ the PlayDrome in Glasgow on November 5th ..

The inaugural event in february was a massive success , this event looks even bigger & better..

Part of the StarStuDded card will include a prestigious 8 - man tournament @ 59kg

This will sell out quicker than Sparklers on Guy Fawkes night..

1st of the 8 to be announced very soon...

not only scotlands best show but one of the best iv fought on ever in the uk...all the best mate will defo be there to watch my irish mongrel man friend and old man gandolph blow some folk to smitherines.

With massive thanks to SuperShowDown @ Brian Calder we will be hosting the Scottish leg of the Celtic Championship Challenge on the day of the main event , this will replicate the evening show and will showcase the very best talen from the Celtic Nations & England..

The weigh in will be 9am for a 10am start and there will be 25 decision bouts with upto Celtic 10 titles on the line..

It will be £10 entry for all , with the option of a discounted ticket for the main evening event..

Really looking forward to this one, the 8 man tournament will be explosive going by the weight division and the guys at that weight available to fight. Can't wait to hear the rest of the card.
I missed the last showdown event as I was fighting the next day, so will make up for it this year and catch up with all those jock bastards I've not seen for ages ;-)

Q1.. Congratulations on the big Toyota win how was it ??

A.Hey Pete thank you- the tournament was my first, I trained damn hard, with Watcharachai Kaewsamrit doing most of my padwork along with Tam and berm from Jitti gym- to be honest after all that hard training the fights were a pleasure lol.
I enjoyed the fights and although the first two were very tough opponents I grew in confidence by the final and felt comfortable - knocking out the current number 1 at Lumpini in the final was the stuff of dreams- and hasn't really sunk in yet. Although after a few days rest and recovery I am already focussed on this next fight and started back training already.

Q2..Whats it going to be like Fighting on the SuperShowDown stage in Glasgow November ??

A.I can't wait to fight on the super showdown show - I missed the last one as I was fighting the day after, but heard so many good things and when I watched the fights on P4TV the atmosphere seemed amazing. I am good friends with Brian and have a good crowd following me up to support me so I am looking to please all, as usual, but now I also have the added pressure of defending my name as it stands in Thailand - so I am going there to win.

Q3..Can you give the uk fans an recent insight into your opponant ??

A.Samingprai, is a very well know fighter in Thailand as well as the world, he's a very clever fighter, with good technique and a good eye.
He has fought a few times since the last showdown show, twice in Australia I believe. I have bumped into him a few times at weigh ins and fights at the stadiums and we have always said hello and had a chat, he is a good guy, very polite and friendly so I look forward to having a few drinks after the show with him and his trainer Rob Cox.

Q4.. And your tactics ???

A..I don't really like to go into a fight with too firm a idea on tactics, I more like to prepare for the unexpected, I have watched a few of his fights and have a rough idea of his style, but like I said before, he is a clever fighter and will no doubt change certain things to fight me.
I suppose we really have to wait for the first couple of rounds to have a look at each other - bit I predict this will be an excellent fight, and great entertainment for the paying public.

Q5..You are going to get a great reception over the border are you looking forward to it?? The last show had a great party atmosphere around it , its going to be a great weekend xx

A..Yes I have some great friends and training partners living in Scotland, and can't wait to fight up there again- it has been nearly four years since I last fought over the border, when I beat Scottish champ Rab Burt on the power of Scotland show.

A2: It doesn't really matter if it's in Bolton, in London or in Glasgow, fight is a fight and no matter what show it is i always try to give my best.

A3: Yeah, that he got beat last weekend :) Thats enough, lol


Q 4. And your tactics for the Fight ???
A4: I don't like to have fancy tactics, as most of the time when you step into the ring you realise that what's happening there, is completely different compare to what you expected. I like to go there and just do my stuff.


Q5 . Being a local fighter you will get a great Reception are you expecting many people coming to watch your fight ????
A5: Yeah, that's always a good thing, to fight for home crowd. I definitely expect many people coming to the show. Will they come to see me fighting? I am not sure about that, but they will definitely be there :)

A6: Yeah, i am slowly starting to pick up my training, i am lifting a lot of weights to get stronger , should be a great show.

haha i'm not sure about being one of the first to know about it but i'm pretty good mates with Brian Calder as i used to train with him and Jordan so we speak quite regularly and i was delighted when he asked me to be part of the show!!

I really can't wait for this one, the card is amazing and with the main fights and the tournament i've no doubt it will be a contender for show of the year.........he's really raised the bar for shows in Scotland and i think the amount of people traveling from all over the UK and Ireland to watch SuperShowDown says it all really.

Q 3. Do you know anything about Gery , seen any footage , was he on a Dan Green show ????

Yeah i've seen a little bit of him and know he is Italian Champion and supposedly one of Italys best fighters so i know it's going to be a very tough fight, he looks very awkward for sure!!. I watched Damien Trainor beat him last year for the WMC MAD World title on Dan Greens show and watched his fight from the Kings Birthday last year in Thailand so i know he has good credentials and is used to fighting on big shows! I'm pretty sure he has had a successful amateur career as well which people often don't hear about but at the end of the day i'm going to concentrate on my own training and fighting my fight rather than worry too much about my opponent

Q 4. And your tactics for the Fight ???

I don't think it's ever good to go into a fight with a definite game plan or tactics as things don't always go to plan and 1 shot can change everything but im sure Richard will have some good ideas and things for me to be working on up his sleeve ;-)

Q5 . Being a scots fighter you will get a great Reception the last one your supporters made the most noise by far ...are you expecting many people coming to watch your fight ????

Yeah i was blown away by the reception i got last time. Loads of people i spoke to after the show were talking and laughing about some of the songs my idiot mates and family were singing so hopefully they are on good form again, i know Liam cant wait for it as he was singing one to me the other night in the gym lol

Yes i really cant wait for it and its great that there are so many of us that know each other and are good mates all on it together, some people maybe don't realise just quite how good mates some of the fighters are even though we have to fight each other

A.I had to mull it over for about 2seconds before deciding

A.I think to say i fought on the last SSD would be a stretch, i was really looking forward to my last fight with john but sometimes these things happen.
So i'm looking forward to showing people what i can do properly this time round

A.All of the fighters in the tournament are class acts, they have all fought at the highest level against some quality opponents ,ilias just fought rungravee :o meleady just beat karpowicz, varela beat danny taylor, o'connor is in thailand winning fights, copestake just fougth 1 of the countries best in jordan calder, jonno regularly fights the best at his weight and every1 elses weight for that matter lol, and loz is coming off some great wins over davy mac and john dick. who would i prefer? any of thembecause at the end of the day it doesnt matter who i get its going to be really tough

Q 4. And your tactics for the tournament ???
A.not really, just my usual fall forward with aggression and hope to land something that hurts my opponent more than me lol


Q5 . Being the Home Fighter your going to get a great Reception , being the local fighter is that an advantage ??
A.hopefully but i know that the crowd at SSD have a good appreciation for proper MT and know that all fighters have to be shown respect. unless my opponent feels pressure then theres no real advantage, its still only me and him in the ring.

A.aye, i went out for a few pints with a huge cast on my leg lol probably not the smartest thing i've done. it'll defo be a busy weekend for me, with fighters then travelling down to leeds the next day for my bhoy coreys fight for a commonwealth title on dean whites show. so it'll be a few jars on saturday night and then home to my bed early :(

There are some top fighter in this 8 man from all over the uk and ireland i think its gona be the most exciting 8man to be held in the uk so far. I dont fancy anyone in round 1 i think because of the quality of fighter in this there is not gona be any easy match ups, we all have different styles and we are all dangerous on our day.

Q 4. And your tactics for the tournament ???

I dont think you can have tactics for a tournament because your not only training to fight one person so just train hard and take each fight as they come.

Q5 . What sort of Reception are you expecting over the border & are you looking forward to it ??

I hope i get a good reception but it doesnt really matter once im inside the them ropes i dont notice any thing outside the ring. Of course im looking forward to it have been excited for this since last january ha.

Q6 ..The last show had a great party atmosphere around it , its going to be a great weekend.

Ha im dying for the after party already its gona madness as usual when all us drunking thai boxers hit the town and hopefully i have 3 grand in me back pocket for it ;)

I've known Brian since i was 17 , ever since i fought on Where eagles dare against his son. After the last 8 man and all the hype about who is the top dog at this weight , i think he sensed the need for another with a few different names in.



Q 2..Whats it going to be like Fighting on the SuperShowDown stage in Glasgow November ??

Its going to be amazing , just thankful for the oppertunity to fight on such a great show.

Insight , well.\
Stephen Meleady is deffinatly the man to beat in this tournament. Been consistently gritting out big wins for a while.
Darren O' Connor has alot of experience and has basically lived in Thailand the past few years.
Jose Valera just had a big win over Danny Taylor.
Ilias just fighting Runggravee,
Keith doing so well in the last tournament.
And Carl who is awkard and has a great record.

Id prefer Carl in the first round , no disrespect but since i have already beaten him i feel i have and know what tools to used to do the job again.



Q 4. And your tactics for the tournament ???

Not what people are going to expect!.
I'v been known for a little while just as forward fighter , before then i was known as quite a techincal fighter. I think the latter would suit the tourny better instead of just bowling in and injuring myself.


Q5 . What sort of Reception are you expecting over the border & are you looking forward ??

A good one , i know most of the people down there who are into thai and it should be class.

I was at the first show and it was amazing then my coach and promoter of the show Brian Calder asked me to fight on this one, I was over the moon when i got asked cause its a big stage to fight on.

This is definitely my biggest fight so far against Mark and to be having that fight on such a big promotion like SuperShowDown is ace.


Q 3. Can you give the fans an insight into Mark your oponant in this big domestic fight ????

Emmm Mark is the current UKMF Scottish Champion at around 69kg I'm sure and has had over 10 fights with quite a few knockouts , he trains out of my old gym SMTC aswell. So really looking forward to this.

Working on alot of things up the gym thats all I can say haha, dont wont to give anything away:)!

I've Sold around 30 odd tickets so far then everyone from the gym will be there and got people coming from England who Im friends with so hopefully they'll be cheering me on aswell, should have adecent crowd there

I heard about it officially back in june when I was asked to fight on the show. cheers to Brian for giving me the chance to fight on the biggest show in the uk, Im delighted!

Its going to be fantastic, like I say its the biggest stage in the uk so its going to be a real buzz! I was at the last one and it was huge!!

I've never met Gordon but I know he is a big name not just in scottish muay thai but UK muay thai. he knows the sport well and is very experienced.



Q 4. And your tactics for the Fight ???

I fight how i fight so I wont really have any set tactics, apart from leaving it all in the ring, something I've probably not done in my last few fights, to win this fight i will have to do this. if somethings not working for me I'll be prepared to change it, im comfortable fighting at range or in close.

My dad will be there and probably a few mates. a few of my mates are also fighting so its exciting to be on the same show as them!

1, At the start of the year when I fought on Brians first supershow down event, I was due to fight Robin Downer and the winner was gonna go into this tournament.... however my opponent pulled out of the fight at about 2 oclock that afternoon haha so I went straight into it..

2, Well i've fought in Scotland twice before and one of them was on the first Supershow down event, it was a good venue with a big crowd and I expect it to be the same again but better.

3, I'm not bothered about not fighting a particular person in the first round, if you go there with the attitude of I don't wanna fight this guy or that guy and then get drawn against them well what are you gonna do?

4, tactics are to go to Scotland, win 3 fights, get 3 grand.... and come home

3. I've never seen him fight, but a few folk at the gym have and they've assured me he's a good technical fighter so it should definitely be a good fight to watch.

Due to the massive floods in thailand the fight between Andy Thrasher & Samingprai has had to be cancelled..
The Salaya village in Bangkok ,Where Samingprai Kiatphontips gym is located has been totally flooded and these people now have nothing , the foods have ruined the gym and they living in seriously bad conditions, with hardly food & water..

Samingpra has had no preperation for the fight and it was Rob Cox who passed on the news that Samingpra has had to pull out..

Its a promoters worst nightmare but we would rather the news be in the public domain today..We we be holding a fundraising raffle on the night for The Salaya village ..

Brian - one of the best shows for fighter talent and match-making I can remember. Loved watching Yetkin fight. A real treat to see fighters of this calibre on our doorstep.

Gordon Smith was outstanding. Cannot get over how calm, methodical and powerful he was.

I've never seen Davy Mac better, cracking performance from him.

davy mac was tops, 1 of the few fights i got to see, but the we italian was a good fighter too and made it a high quality mt fight between good nak muay :) but that wa me being a purist and enjoying the traditional style than the evasive style which for some works (and works very well as i found out to my detriment lol)

FWIW, from my vantage point I would have given the count too; I've not reffed as regularly as Rab, but I have reffed. Interested to watch the P4TV footage when it's available as it will be 180° from where I was.

I would just like to thank everyone who helped me with my show there are too many people to mention, the show was amazing and I am really happy with how it went. All the fighter's did there gym's and themselves proud, I will continue to put on World Class events because that is what the public imo want to see, true muay thai at the highest level. I am already working on my next show and have been for the last 4 weeks. As already has been said Yetkin Ozkul is a World Class fighter and there is no shame in losing to someone of that calibre, bringing guys like that to Scotland is what it is all about for me, I hope it inspires fighter's even more seeing guys like that fight live, I know it inspires me. I love promoting these shows and everything that goes with it and I can't wait for the next one, watch this space.

Just watched the Chipchase vS Varela fight, you had to feel for Jonno who was clearly winning right up until that slightly dodgy 8 count... To be fair to the ref, he did go down like a sack of shit and I think the ref had made up his mind to give the count before he could notice how unfazed Jonno was by the knockdown. All credit to Varela for his efforts though, the last half of his third round against Oskul was pure class. :)

Just want to say a huge thanks to Brian Calder for having me on this massive show and to everyone at Bad Company who helped me train for this fight and to uncle Vinny ;-).
Tournament was really exciting, just watched the fights back and thought Gordon Smith was brilliant, hopefully he will get a few big fights now and maybe a British title shot or something.
Always good on shows like that to catch up with old mates and make some new friends, agree with Keith that Jose Varela is defo coolest man in the world, very funny out the back(had a few odf us in stitches a couple of times) and great attitude!
