Tony Myres Judging Course

Tony Myres Judging Seminar, 11th/12th July 1pm to 5pm
O’B Gym will be holding a judging seminar with Tony Myers on 11th and 12th July at the new gym in Johnstone. This great opportunity for both students and instructors to learn more about Muay Thai scoring and techniques that could decide the outcome of a fight. We will be doing a seminar and optional assessment. I know not many people actually want to take part in the assessment they just want to increase their knowledge of how to score a fight.
Prices are Adult £25, Juniors £15 and a percentage of all profits will be donated to Steve Sheddon Cancer Fund which we are proud to be supporting as a club.

Please contact John O’Brien to book a space quoting which date you require:
Email: johnobrien63@hotmail.com
Mobile: 07748 071581
Gym Address
9 William St,Johnstone.
Please note the gym entrance is through Dimity St car park.

with the assessment, if passed are u then a fully qualified judge or referee or would u hav to do further assessments?

TonyMyers

This assessment is being conducted on behalf of the STBA, so John will be in a better position to answer that particular point. However, those passing the assessment with 80%+ would also be eligible to be used as a third judge by the UKMF if they wished. If a third judge demonstrates competence over a period of time, they would become a fully qualified judge. The course will cover judging and not refereeing (which involves a different course and a different assessment process).

Craig if your looking to take up judging or refereeing talk to Frank Watkins who is the STBA official for rules regs judging and reffing!!! You will be required to shadow judge at a few shows before you become a judge!!!

just to say good luck with this, john, Ive contacted a pile of people outwith the normal community and let them know about this, as I'm fed up getting into discussions like the one i ended up in after Guys last show where a fighter who has been in this game a long time clearly did not understand how to fight Thai.
it gets me down listening to the same bullshit constantly.

What I'm trying to say is that there are a lot of people on ax from Scotland who may not normally support an STBA event, which is fair enough, however for your own sake come and learn so that the next time you get into a discussion you can do better than "they don't score the first two round to suit the gamblers, its all f****ng corrupt over there"

rant over

Many thanks to Tony for travelling up and doing this course for us.Very informative and those that attended learnt a lot or realised how little they have learned when it comes to scoring Muay Thai.

Thanks to everybody who made the effort to attend, if you havent got your scores from the assesment give me a call and I`ll pass on your score. Tony will be hosting another seminar at Kenny Burnetts gym in September so if you didnt make this course get you ass up to that one.

Got to agree Colin !! you just think they just sit there watching fights . but i noticed yesterday how easy it would be to let your mind wander, dont know if that was to do with watching the fights in silence, but i have a new found respect for the guys who make the decisions.

I would like to think i learned a bit more about the sport and got a better understanding of the scoring criteria, thanks to John for putting it on & Tony for coming up.

Thanks for having us down John. Found the course really helpful and interesting. May stick to fighting for the forseeable future though as I'm no great shakes as a judge (2 out of 5 in asessment lol)

A tony myers judging course is an absolute essential to ANYONE with an interest in muay thai.
Whether youre a fighter, a trainer (even trainers of kickboxing should go on one IMO) , an official and especially a promoter who puts on thai fights this course should be made a pre requisite.

Thank you for all those who gave up their time to attend over the two days and put themselves through an assessment. A special thank to John for both organising the seminar and for your usual outstanding hospitality; always a pleasure, cheers mate.

It was great to see some old friends and some new faces. Judging is not an easy job as Phil pointed out and can be a thankless one. Hopefully with continuing understansing of rules and scoring by coaches and fighters judges will get less grief.

The results of the assessment do show how much understanding has improved amongst judges and coaches in Scotland since the last assessment a few years ago, which is excellent news. Out of the 25 sitting the assessment, 14 people obtained the 80% pass mark with 8 obtaining 100%. I think only 7 passed previously (from a larger number of assessments). As John mentioned, Kenny Burnett is holding another seminar in September.

For those not training as a judge the 80% mark is not really important (although it would perhaps suggest that it might be unwise to shout too loudly about bad decisions LOL) but it is just a formative experience that is useful to gauge current understanding and to use as a platform to continue to further knowledge. Certainly a number of people on the assessment a few years ago who only obtained very low marks then got 100% this time around, which is a real credit to them for not being put off but continuing to develop.

Thanks for the seminar plug Farhad.
