"Childrens / Kids Future or Not in Thai-Boxing MT?
Sandy Holt
Posted: 2004-07-26 20:13:25
We All Know- "Kids are the Future" !
( LOL ! The Americans Super Model or Actor in their "World Peace Speach" )
Anyway..........
Ive been Teaching now for 2 Decades and Allways had a few Kids in my Classes and about 15 years ago started Kids Only Clases from 1 to 2.3 and Now we Have 4 a week !
And are very Successful ! And getting Busier and Busier! :-))
(how you guys Finding it ? feel about it ? Do you have Seperate Kids Classes in your Thai-Boxing / martial-Arts Gyms? )
Its probably due to the Worried parents ref: the Big media Presence in the Bad and Negative Name of Paedophiles and Child Abductors etc: etc:!
So Our Classes are done as A protection Class re: Being Aware and as well as the Positive effects of the Mental and Physical Self-defence and sport Aspect Of Thai-Boxing and the such like Exercise too etc: !
Bullying too !!! One i can Speak from `my Past and Personal Experience`
is Highly featured in Real Life too ! Goes on Everywhere and in all Class and Walks of Life too !

I Really Do Wish Thai-Boxing and the Martial-Arts was in the School Curriculum !

Have got Kids classes in our gym, actually the kids classes are bigger than some of the adult classes. There are just as many girls as boys as well so thats cool, none of them have haircuts like you though!

sandy you was bullied as a kid,, well if i had a hair style like yours i'd be bullied and all man,,lol
but i think that we should mix the adult classes with the kids classes, this is something like confident boost for the young uns and they'll be more determind to turn up to the sessions,,, plus the will learn more on the side from the more experienced people in the club

Posted: 2004-07-28 05:40:35
I dunno, I think kids should prove that they are commited and can concentrate for an hour's lesson before they are allowed in an adults class. Then by all means let them in.
TinyThai
Posted: 2004-07-28 07:19:11
Our gym has a "Beat The Bullies" class for kids and that gives them confidence
not to go out and bash kids heads in but to know within themselves that they can handle a bullying situation, as i posted before my son was bullied at school aged eight, we took him to this class once a week, now aged twelve, he trains religously five days a week and has been made a Junior Assistant Instructor to help out with younger kids.It depends how far a kid wants to go in Muay Thai whether they want to fight or purely a fun sport (again involving slap and tap, back to back and other simple fun games that help to build basic groundwork for Thai boxing without being boring and regimental)As posted above,
kids can learn a lot training with experienced fighters even if they are only watching and listening. So yes, i think kids are definately the future of Muay Thai and hopefully future Champions!

50 Pence Nope and Yugs right ! we used to have Mixed classes and its mahem and dangerous !
we Continually having Accidents ! Big uns standing on Little uns ! !! Not Good !
Plus i hear many Complaints from People Who have moved into Gyms with Matts and Fully Padded Floors say its Much safer than Wooden Sports centre Floors ! Which IMO are also Dangerous and a thing of the past, those and church halls etc:

hey sandy.. i know whats its like kicked around everyday. although, for me it was always emotional damage. ;O it changes you. i think part of the reason i took so much sh*t was i was always quiet, i dont like to talk much. i just like to work. I've walked away from people swingin on me, tryin to get a street fight outta me. it helps me work damn hard, though. i can push myself till i feel like a machine, i just dont get tired. well, i get sleepy tired (every now and then), but i dont get exhausted from working out. not like i did when i first started playing sports..( when i was knee high, maybe shorter)

if you was joking about the bullying, please disregard my post as skitzophrenic blabbering.

Im Deadly Serious About the Buullying ! The Positive Elememts are thus:-
I was lucky to be able to Fight for `3` Different Thai-Boxing Titles / Championships !
These are the Result of me "Turning" it around and being Positive And Dug Deep into martial_arts and thai-Boxing and This is the Realistic and Positive Thing it did for me !
21 Fights and Only 2 narrow points losses !
I had a Motivation !
But instaed of Bullying back ???
or Degressing and Being Depressed and Poss: doing a Stupid Suicidal thing ???
I Went the Right Way IMO, And A positive One ! Its made ( they the Bulies ) Have made me partly who iam Today !
Thankyou Bullies !!!!

i see it every day, man. its like people point out flaws without even looking for the good points. judging by looks, or physical traits, and not even getting to know the person. it can even be dangerous in the ring, if you see your opponent, and think somethings "wrong" with him, dont prepare properly. the fighter that has something wrong with him, blocks out all insults, and distractions, and just trains. and the stuff that does get into his skin, makes him train 4 or 5 times harder. so he's 50in deadly in teh ring.

i hope i made somewhat of a point...i just got back from my first thai boxing class.. i gots the weirdest pains.. ;O

baz...the thing i dont understand is.. people put someone through soo much sh*t, right? as soon as someone wants to swing on someone thats hurt em bad emotionally, they're the bad guy. thats what f-n pisses me off. i'm not sayin we should be allowed to shoot up a school or nothin, but still. we should at least be able to protect our names. i mean, half the time people are sayin sh*t about me, they're usually trying to see how i fight. so, i figure, why not let em in on it, huh? but noo..there's that whole court/ fines/ jail time thingy. damn red tape.

hey,
this is an interesting topic and beeing a young un' myself i thought i'd share an opinion. ive been training for about a year and a half with JWP, i was doing the kids class for about a year then they stopped cos' JWP was to busy with fighting. i then started to get interested in the fighting aspect of muay thai and so i progressed up to the advanced and fighters class. in doing this i learned and improved so much in 6 months than i did in 1 year (mentally and physically in my opinion). Just watching the fighters and what they were doing helped me, i would watch them then go on the bag and practice something till i could do it as well as the things that JWP and others were teaching me along the way.

50 pence,
your tottally right with the mixed classes i think. well not to the extent that they are getting pushed around at all but more that they are another responsibility and they fool around more cos' they arent getting full attention like they do in a "kids class".

Tyler
TinyThai
Posted: 2004-08-05 06:40:09
Well said Tyler.
What age are you?
My son is twelve and it would be a dream come true for him to even watch JWP
train never mind be trained by him.
As i posted above each kid is different by what they want to achieve in Muay Thai but the dedicated ones show through in the end.
Tyler O'Neill
Posted: 2004-08-05 06:50:08
im 16...
JWP is my hero, i certainly dont take it for granted that i get to train with him and by him. its more than a pleasure and the best thing about it all is he is the koolest guy. he's one of my good frends and proud to say it.
for me and my future in muay thai, i will fight and just see where i go with it. i dont wanna say that i want to be a pro fighter because things change but it would be kool and full of excitement as a career. its a big decision to make IMO so i'll go with the flow for the moment.
is your son fighting yet TinyThai?

TinyThai

Tyler,
My wee boy Jake, has been training for four years and fighting for about a year and a half.We live in Bonny Scotland and the Muay Thai scene here is getting better every year bringing with it more opportunities for juniors and adults.
Sounds as though you have a mature head for a young un Tyler,I'm well impressed with your attitude to training with such an awesome trainer ( IMO )

My kids train just before the adults.

At the end of the adults class the kids are allowed to stay and watch and mess about in the ring whilst the adults train. I agree it gives them something to aspire to.

I think the kids progressed faster back in the days when the kids trained alongside the adults. It was a seperate class but held at the same time!
TinyThai
Posted: 2004-08-05 16:02:02
I agree totally Dave.Kids training with decent fighters does give them someone to look up to.Going back to the trainer thing, every trainer wants there fighters to be better than they were so by passing trainers knowledge and fighters knowledge onto kids they can only be better fighters in the future.
If ya know what i'm trying to say. After all there only pups for a wee while
and then they start to whoop the old dogs asses!Lol

Adults, Kids Read this:-

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids
in the 40's, 50's, 60's, or even maybe the early 70's probably shouldn't
have survived. Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based
paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets,
... and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. ( Not to mention the
risks we took hitchhiking.) As children, we would ride in cars with no
seatbelts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day
was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not
from a bottle. Horrors! We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda
pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always
outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one
bottle, and no one actually died from this. We would spend hours building
our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we
forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to
solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as
long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to
reach us all day. NO CELL / MOB: PHONES!!!!! Unthinkable! We did not have
Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels
on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal Mobile cell phones, personal
computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and
found them. We played Footballand other ball Sports, and some times,
the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth,
and there were no lawsuits / Being Sued from these accidents.
They were` accidents`. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents?
We had fights and punched each other and
got black and blue and learned to get over it. We made up games with sticks
and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen,
we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us
forever. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the
door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them. Little League
had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn
to deal with disappointment. Some students weren't as smart as others, so
they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors!
Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our own.
Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke
a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that! This
generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers
and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation
and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we
learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them! Congratulations!
Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as kids,
before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good !!!!!
People under 30 are WIMPS !
:-p

Baz is back, been busy for a few days. Sandy I've sent you an e-mail about them shorts.

Cheers Man

Predator, your right more def needs to be done about bullying. Thing is man we all get our own back in the end half the daft knobs who are cock of the walk at school end up in crap jobs. Plus I think bullying encourages you to achieve more to prove a point in some cases. a lot of schools are really starting to crack down on bullying now which is a good thing.

TinyThai
Posted: 2004-08-06 02:36:23
Tyler,
Jake,s had about 10 fights between interclubs and fights, all padded up.I'll probably get reported to child services for this, but he and the other juniors
at his club prefer head contact and no padding. Two boys at the gym have been training since they were four and theyre now 14 and 15, i think they've been training longer than most adults in our gym.How about you, hows your fight record doing?
ThePredator
Posted: 2004-08-06 04:05:45
baz.. i know what you mean about proving a point. if somebody says i cant do anything, or thinks they can do something better than me, i bust my ass till i can get it perfect. sometimes i enjoy not saying anything back to bullies..gets em pissed. other times, it pisses me off people can be so cruel. but i hold it in, let it out when i get to the gym/ dojo/ track/ ring. even if i dont say anything, mind my own business, somebody always has to open their mouth. they dont always say it directly, but i hear whispers and often had people tell me stuff other people said. half the people i know dont believe i'm a fighter, i'm so quiet and shy all the time. but then again, they only know me at work, they havent seen me train. so i guess the yolks on them.. ;p.

as far as the schools doing more about bullying.. what took em so long? get tired of the damages done by classes and school hallways getting shot up? people getting stabbed? bomb threats? took em this long to realize something was wrong?

Alright Sandy!
You don`t know me but I currently train with Master Sken and know that you are a good friend of his. I take my little girl along with me and although she is only 5, she shows a great interest and if she wants can start training when she is 6. I think it is great for kids to take an interest in sport of any kind and being able to defend themselves properly. Respect to yourself too for your dedication to the sport!

well i had 1 padded fight last year and got a draw and ive had 2 non-padded fights this year and won the first by KO in the 1st round and my other fight i won on split decision so it was close but the other kid had had around 10-12 fights so i was stoked. its so hard over here in Aus to get fights at my weight 40kg-42kg. Not many kids train to fight which is a shame. sounds like there is plenty of kids over there in scotland.
