Hiriwia is an awesome fighter all he needs to be the full package is someone behind him to really get him fit.
If Hiriwia was at a top physical fitness level there is no dougt he would be a NZ K-1 CHAMPION.

Maybe something to work on for next year, eh Hiriwia.

He's doin that now.
thats why he did better than he has before.
And i think having his son Stuart in his corner was good 4 him as they both train together.
It help Stuart with getting experince,as some day he him self wants to be in the ring fighting.
By the way my names CHRIS ive been in "T" corner 3 times in auckland.

I can confirm Andrew Peck has been around alot longer than 5yrs.

He fought on one of my show's at the Glenfeild rec centre against Slade Leaf & that was back in 1990-91 which he won very easy.

Andrew Peck is no newcomer to the sport.

Te Rangi has always had bad stamina, every year hes lost fights because of it, and every year he has not changed. He either wins early or not at all, and against any decent opponent thats not enough to move him up the ranks.

Doug Viney has had a couple of defeats recently, hes good and can hit fast but maybe needs experience and more defensive work?

Top 5
1 Ray
2 Hunt
3 Suttie (lost to Ron but is still alot more experienced)
4 Peck
5 Ron (won K1 NZ but still need to see results to see if hes lifted himself to a new level. Always been close to becoming a top fighter, hopefully we'll see him follow in Rays footsteps soon).

One Question:

Outside of Ray and Mark, who has performed against Overseas Opposition in the past 12 months - the answer is only Jase and Ron

Ron Beat Percovic first up and should have got the decision in Croatia, He also beat Fujimoto in Japan all in 2003 and he has just won the K-1

Jase beat Marhold, Andrew, Tomihira, and Paul Robinson, and has only lost to Peter Graham (who is in the K-1 finals) and Ron (in a very close match up which could have gone either waY)

Both Jase and Ron are very evenly matched - of the other boys:

Dougie - is young talented and inexperienced and hasn't quite made the step up he has beaten Andrew and Ollie but lost to Juckic Twice and Jase.

Andrew - has looked great in his last two outings but hasn't put the icing on the cake with dominant wins. He has beaten Auckland, Clay and Terrry and lost to Tee Man (albiet contorversially), Jase, Doug,Marhold and Brodrocic.

To be ranked higher these two talented fighters (Andrew and Doug) need to start winning again.

in the case of the K-1 NZ, all the fighters defended their ranks.

Sorry Felix, was looking at rankings and Sio has beaten Mita, last year, was a pro/am as both fighters lost their opponents just before kick off.b 5 round point decision on Hape's show
Lightning Mike Angove
Posted: 2003-11-16 20:52:47
Lets start another long thread about Felix's rankings (LOL) - Felix, your rankings work brilliantly with one off fights but under the K-1 tournament format they leave a lot to be desired.

In fact I would go as far to say they are two quite different scenarios and the highest level. The best five round fighter will not always win in the tournaments and vice versa for the top Tournament fighter.

Given the most recent K-1 NZ results you can see the faults in the system surely. Te Rangi KO over Peck, Sefo pd over Suttie, Sefo PD over Te Rangi, K-1 Oceania Suttie KO winner over Peck, K-1 NZ 2002 Suttie KO winner over Viney, Viney Pts winner over Peck, Peck TKO wionner over Te Rangi ... Under your system none of these fights count for anything in terms of ranking. Surely this is flawed and yes I know we've had this discussion a million times already. (Sorry Guys this is the only comment I am going to make)

Posted: 2003-11-16 21:33:10
etk crew,

thanks. in this case, i believe i can make an ajustment since mita hasn't climbed the rankings. if mita rebounded and took the #1 rank [just an example], i wouldn't be able to adjust for sio.

lightning mike,

i know my list doesn't tell the whole story. neither does the list of K-1 grand prix champions. neither does the list of k-1 nz champions. to think that neither ray sefo nor mark hunt has ever won the k-1 nz gp.

one more thing, new zealanders don't have to fight each other to move up in rank. the nzl vs cro fights were a nice opportunity to bring some of the better ranks south of the equator. unfortunately, the croatians seemed to defend their ranks quite well and go as far as moving their own fighters up the list.

Hi Dixon
JUst a question about having a show of that. In ssome where like Christchurch or Wellington.
I know would cost alot but how bout taking kickboxing to new cities.
When was the last time a city besides Auckland hosted a Show of that standard.
Just a silly thought...
But dont u think it might bring ppl from all over the counrty and to the next NZ K-1......
If anyone can do something like that.U can........

It would be nice for the fans of Kickboxing to see a fight night like this in one of the other cities but the economics of it would probably not be in favour of that eh?

So long as it's on the tele I'm happy enough with that :)

Wellington Draws pretty good crowds to Dave's shows and the venue there is pretty Sharp

Also the Fights that Tank Put on in Dunedin Show that other centres can draw good sized crowds.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Wellington Hosting a Big K-1 show next year but obviously there are a lot of logistics required to make that happen.

Lol Richie! I'm with you bro! At the end of the day, Dixon has to pay the bills and $$ dictate that you put the show on where the most punters are. At the moment that's Auckland. However, with the exposure that we're getting with the K-1 events on TV and the increased interest in our sport hopefully we will eventually have a big enough national fan-base for Dixon to take the show on the road it would be great for the sport and great for the fans in other areas.

Dixon, wicked!!!!!roll on the 26th of March, I guess it's a bit early to start counting sleeps huh! not far away though ( which is great to keep momentium within the sport up, and what a lineup, sounds like it's going to be a hell of a night, can't wait to have again, with camera in hand what I consider the best seat in the house'

- and reckon it'd do the sport a load of positive things to take it to Wellington ( conditional that it isn't at the expense of any Auckland gigs' I mean hell that just would be on D) create publciity and increase exposure down that way - gotta be a winner all round Dixon

The NZ v OZ max matchups sound awesome and like everyone else I'm really excited about it but would there be any chance of getting the absolute top guns from over there ?

ie. JWP, Zambo, Daniel Dawson ?

I think Dawson is only Boxing Dixon, though i did see photos of him fighting at the K1 max event in japan wearing shoot boxing pants. JWP has a busy muay thai schedule with a number of fights set up for him in the superleague in europe. I could be wrong though.
PTB
Posted: 2003-11-19 16:26:24
I think that both jwp and Dawson have big issues with Tarik. Dawson has been boxing but bypassed Tarik to get a slot on that k-1 max show and jwp has got a 5 fight deal with superleague that will probably keep him pretty busy. It would have been great to see them here though. Zambides is tight with Tarik but as McIver said would want the big dollars
Dixon McIver

hey mr powerhouse..you say you KOed tee man last year, i think he was ripped off more than what you say you were this year. first of all if you look at the fight from last year he got an 8 count for not fighting back off the ropes..ripoff 1 and then yes you hit him with a spinning hand and knocked him over which im sure every fighter does when they get hit from the side but he was up straight away and that was ripoff number 2. right up until then the fight was even, you won the first and tee man won the 2nd, from where i was sitting at this years k1 you were doing the chicken dance when he hit you and you blame the ref...you poor loser. i just wish the ref let it carry on and then he would have knocked you out. and mike angove, you say you beat hireoa and you have to remember that i was there that night and remember you saying and the tee man saying that he only had a weeks notice..why say you beat him..if you gave him enogh notice i reckon he would beat you too..another is the jason suttie rematch..i wasnt there but saw it on video and even tee man took the fight on 1 days notice, and you say he got beat. when you say you beat hireoa or tee man why dont yous all say also that we beat him on such short notice...boing..boing

LOOK GUYS IF U WANT TO PROOF U BEAT TEE-MAN ,
Then proof to everyone and make a challenge again and this time give him more notice.......
I know for a fact that you guys would not take a fight on such short notice,
So give the Man credit where credit is dew and tell the fans the truth and not alot of crap.
a KO is Knocked Out not fight stopped
a TKO is fight stopped which i dont think happens in kickboxin
FOR A MAN TO TAKE A FIGHT ON SHORT NOTICE AND TRYIN TO HELP PEOPLE OUT,BECAUSE THERE IS NO ONE ESLE WHO WILL TAKE A FIGHT ON SUCH SHORT NOTICE.
In any sport or infact in anything that person is a LEGEND,has a Big HEART and helps ours out when he or she doesnt have to but does because they love the sport so much

Oh man, don't start all this again.

If Fighter X feels hard done by in his bout Vs Fighter Y then let Fighter X do the talking. All this conversation is doing now is causing a rift in a small community. It's not positive conversation.

You realise that possibly thousands of international viewers read this board. High profile fighters included. This is really not giving a very good representation of our Kickboxing/Muay Thai/K1 community.

These guys have all fought each other a few times now it would seem so rematches are of little value to their careers. Let them move on to new opponents. Would you rather see them try and improve their international standings or just keep fighting the same old guys and never get any further than NZ?

Onward and upward. NZ Kickboxing is going places ya know? Don't dwell on the past.

How times have changed,Andrew POWERHOUSE Peck used to train under Sam Marsters at Fort Street in central Auckland.I used to train him along with Roger Earp,Bikim and any one else who was keen to train.Andrew who I 1st met was always keen on trainning but was a bit down on confidence. He I recall had his 1st belt on the Steve Message VS Clinton Simmons under card which was held at the Down town convention centre. He won a close decision against a Sir Dorr fighter and rested a bit after that.He had already had a Karate back ground and was showing a lot of potential, until he left for Japan. That was 14 years ago...The shock I got when I seen him K.O. everyone in the NZ K1 was HEART ATTACK material.I could nt beleive that this was the quite shy kid who was always keen to train but just a little shy.I am glad for you mate.....You should have seen the look on my face when I was watching the video.Non the less people change, and so has Andrew........Stay focussed mate , don t worry about what has gone on in the past.Win or Loss, you can waste a lot of time dealing with the public..Train hard and the results will follow.Focuss on the Aussies and you will win.Denver,My regards to the boys.

ok image girl it is like this..and i have no attitude just supporting the fighters BUT..it is ok to go round saying you beat a fighter like hiriwa but these guys mike and jason say they beat hiriwa..come on..yes they did beat him..but if you look at how much notice hiriwa got like with jason 8 hours and with mike 1 weeks notice i dont think its fair on the guy to say they beat him..why dont they say yes we beat hiriwa but on short short notice while we trained hard for 2-3 months for the fight with hiriwa and hiriwa was still injured when he fought jason as he fought in a no rules fight the week before and still went the distance with jason, you tell me caitlin whos gone the distance with jason and i bet those guys were more prepared..is that the only way to beat the big man, on such short short notice..if hiriwa was more prepared i reckon he wouldve beat them pretty convincinly..and if hiriwa trained for 2-3 months solid i bet mike or jason wouldnt take a fight on 1 week or 8 hours short notice to fight hiriwa..COME ON MR ANGOVE we still havnt heard form you yet...what do you reckon

yeah - fair enough bugsy that's fine but all I really meant was about the perhap slgihtly smartarse sarcasism that that you sometimes use to get your point across - that's all

and in regard to what you say above - yeah I do see your point but it is Tman who choose to take the fights on at short notice yes!? he wasn't made' to take them on No?! - and that's great respect to him for that, shows his confidence in his own abilty and consistant form perhaps, not to mention his love for the sport - - but you take a fight on at short notice knowing the risk you take by being perhaps less prepared/trained etc - and when you lose those fights you can't suddenly tag on all the buts.. I don't think - and to speculate about who'd win and lose if trained for same time and so on or even if Jason and mike would take them on under those circumstances is exactly that Bugsy, speculation -

I don't doubt you support the fighters Bugsy not at all don't get me wrong -

Cheers - image girl

Gee Well, Bugs just notcied this debate ranging on T Man and who beat who.

Firstly Tee Man is the toughest fighter in NZ bar none - he has taken more fights on shorts notice than anyone, he says no to no one and always puts on a sprited show. The only other fighter in NZ who can make that claim is Daniel Tai. He is also one of the oldest fighters on the circut god only knows what T mans real age is but he has been 35 for a few years now.If he had only trained to his full potential years ago he would be in K-1 Japan right now.

The best things about the most recent K-1 was that Hiriwa had clearly changed his training routine to include plyometrics, and anerobic recovery as opposed to his previous training routine. And it worked - he retained power through out his fights and in to the final fight with Ron who was bloody sore for days after the fight due to the punishment taken.

With Regard to taking the fight on short notice - Tee Man vs Me: Tee Man had less notice than me, I had three weeks and weighed a shade under 88 kilos for the fight. I believe, although I'm not sure T had a couple of weeks notice. In the fight he clearly faded from the 2nd round onwards and ran out of puff so I got a comfortable points victory. But credit where credit is due - this was my 2nd pro fight and 13th fight in total, T weighed 115 Kilos I weighed 88 so the weight difference was 27 Kilos, he had also fought top professional Heavyweight fighters from around the world and had anywhere between 40 and 50 fights - so although T was not as fit as he would have liked I think some of those other factors should be taken into account. I'd also point out I've never made any commments on this fight other than I got a points decision and that T kick bloody hard, (my ankles were swollen for two weeks after the fight !!!)

As a professional fighter, particularly as a journey man fighter (i.e. a fighter who has yet to really crack the bigger time and will fight anyone anywhere, any time) you need to keep your self in 75 - 80 % shape at all times. If you are a professional this is your job, so stay in shape. Also a professional you make professional choices in choosing when, where and who to fight, some manage their careers cautiously and choose their fights while others like Tee Man fight any one any where any time. I won't comment in which is better but at the end of the day the results are what people look at. Mind you look at what Mark Hunt acheived when he pulled finger and got focused in winning. T could quite easily do the same.

Tee's 2nd fight with Jase was a one day notice when the Dutch fighter pulled out at the last minute, Tee probably helped save the show, but he would also have been paid pretty well to do so. So again it is a matter of choices.

Finally - Tee Man is a Legend in NZ, he is as tough as nails and a bloody good entertainer who people pay good money to see. If he trains properly this year he could kick every bodies ass, and he will have plenty of opportunities because there will be at least four K-1 events in NZ and Aust and possibly further a field he has an opportunity to fight in. At the end of the day as a fighter you are only as good as your last result. If T beats a Jase, a Ron, a Peter Graham or A Slowinski or one of the Eurpean fighters all this debate won't matter. He'll have done his talking in the ring. Which is where these sorts of discussion are always decided.

Good Luck to all the Kiwi Boys this year, it is a big year and an opportunity for some one to step up to the big time.

Just before we close the book on 2003 - I am finally putting the finishing touches on the follow up feature on the NZ K-1 I was supposed to have up before Christmas! The article contains the fighter's (well most of them anyway) reflections on the NZ K1/K1 Max and their opinions on the various controversies. I apologise to Brian, the fighters, and all of you fans for the delay but work and family crises and commitments have made it impossible to post before now. It should be up on Ax news sometime tomorrow and while it might be a little bit past its use by date, there are a number of comments that I'm sure you will all find very interesting. Also watch out for articles on Jason Suttie, Lolo, and Ray Sefo in the near future.

Nearly there! It's a monster (it's alive)! It's about 7000 words long but hey, I did interview 13 of the 16 fighters!! I am just giving it a final clean up and will get someone to cast an editorial eye over it and it will be up for you all to see. Who knows, maybe it will prompt another 107 posts worth of arguing/discussion/debate!!

How can anyone be bored with the plans for this year:

K-1 ANZAC and return match
K-1 NZ
K-1 Max NZ
K-1 Oceania
possible K-1 vs Europe event
K-1 Osaka
K-1 Tokyo
K-1 Los Vegas
K-1 Paris ?
K-1 Max Japan ?

And possibly a couple of others

All televised on TV2, and most shows featuring one or more kiwi fighters.

So huge opportunities for our boys to prove themselves and for new guys to step up.

I'll be great to see the Kiwi fans united vs Australia ... giving them hell.

Time to start reving up the Aussies for K-1 ANZAC at the end of March /Early April.

Well, it's taken a bit longer than anticipated but the 'NZ K-1: The aftermath' article has had an editorial eye cast over it and approved by those who need to approve. I just need to add some photos which I will do tonight so look for it on Ax News tomorrow. It's a monster! I was originally going to do about 5 smaller features but was unable to do this in time because of the reasons mentioned previously. So what we have is essentially 5 features in one huge article. Some really interesting comments from the fighters. Hope you all enjoy it!

He's actually a good fighter but I don't think he's quite up to Rex's calibar, it'll be good to see a rematch though, I missed their fight last year in Auckland but I heard that Rexy won.
Just my opinion, no offence intended.

I Hamid's defence - He is a nice bloke who may or may not have made a stupid mistake, I think we should just get over it and let him fight, if iot happens again then you know it wasn't a mistake and can act accordingly but in the meantime lets just get him fighting again and let the fists and feet do the talking ...

the problem with that fight is no one will pay me more than $800 yes $800 to fight him cos they know it is an easy fight ( according to the auckland promoters). I dont wanna fight for that sort of money anymore! I have to sacrifice time with my family and time of work (unpaid) cos I run my own business. This year I just wanna fight the on dixons shows and on daves shows cos they are high profile and you get good money when you are fighting k1 max fights. I have gone up in weight now aswell and will be fighting at 69-70 kgs so 66kg is out of the question. so wont be defending that title anymore.
maybe if I start giving prince more shit and rarking him up publicly this fight might attract a bigger payday.hmmm whats it going to be?
