The Main Event Arena Tour

Today we begin to release the details of our next arena event, which we have been working on for several months. Following the huge success of The Main Event in June, which drew a UK record crowd, we are absolutely delighted to announce that the fantastic Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham will play host to our next Arena show! Capable of holding up to 13,000 spectators, the Barclaycard Arena (formerly the NIA) is one of the largest tiered indoor arenas in Europe and has hosted some of the world’s most prestigious events and artists over the past 20 years, including Cirque Du Soleil, Oasis and Coldplay.

On May 23rd 2015 The Main Event will showcase the biggest Muay Thai event ever seen in the United Kingdom. Those who have been to previous events have already seen the standard – this show will far exceed it all. Some of the very best fighters in our sport are already penned in to feature on this show and we are currently in talks with numerous others, both domestically and abroad.

In recent years The Main Event has delivered some memorable shows in England, with many of the featured fights still talked about today. Our intention is to continue to progress Muay Thai to the very highest level and we have worked tirelessly over the past few years in pursuit of this aim. With the support of those who truly desire the same, this show will be the next step on the way to actually achieving it.

Tickets will go on sale shortly.
Gold VIP tables are already SOLD OUT.

For some reason I cant get this image to upload. Anyway,

The first fighter to feature in one of 4 headlining fights on this event is double World champion Panicos Yusuf, who is widely regarded as one of the most talented fighters in Europe and boasts a record of 34 wins with just 3 losses. He has beaten numerous high profile names in his career, including Irishman Josh Palmer, Thai World Champion Rung Kharnphan, Italian Calogero Palmieri and former stadium champion Rittijak Kaewsamrit, among others. One of the most technically-gifted athletes on the fight scene, Panicos is currently enjoying a 21-fight unbeaten streak during which he has picked up a European and two World titles. His opponent is confirmed and is arguably his toughest to date! Will be released shortly.... :-)

The next fighter to be announced for this show is 2 x World champion Michael Wakeling from the Scorpions gym in Beckenham.
Part of the famous fighting family, Michael needs no introduction to the Muay Thai stage in the UK, having fought and beaten some of the best fighters around in a career that has seen him remain undefeated for over 10 years. In 2011 Michael defended his 72.5kg WMC intercontinental title against Scotland’s Chris Shaw on our ‘Rumble at the Reebok’ event in arguably one of the best fights ever seen in England. Since then his explosive fighting style has produced wins over top tier fighters including Craig Jose and former Lumpinee champion Pajonsuk Superpro. In his last outing he took an impressive points win over kickboxing legend Ali Gunyar, en route to collecting the 75kg Enfusion World title. Currently ranked #1 in the UK 75kg independent kickboxing rankings, his professional fight record reads 31 fights with 29 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.
Again, Michael’s opponent is confirmed and will be released shortly…..

The next UK number 1 fighter scheduled to fight on The Main Event is:

Daniel Mcgowan

Aged just 18, Mcgowan is a particularly special talent who has already established himself as the number 1 bantamweight in the UK. Currently living and training at the Petchyindee Academy in Thailand, he has fought and beaten some of the best names in Europe, including Paolo Da Silva, Portuguese champion Rui Botelho and, most recently, Spanish champion Nestor Rodriguez.
A former 3 time junior World title holder, Daniel’s professional record of 20 fights with 18wins, 1 draw and only 1 loss demonstrates his outstanding ability and he is tipped for the very top by those in the know.
He is set to remain at Petchyindee Academy for the next few months, fighting as much as possible and preparing for arguably his toughest test to date when he returns to England to fight only on The Main Event!

The fourth fighter to be announced for this event is UK #1 Dean James.

Another fighter needing no introduction to the Muay Thai stage, Dean James is one of the most technically talented athletes around. Having begun fighting relatively late at the age of 21, he has progressed quickly. Dean secured the UK #1 junior featherweight position with a win over Andy Howson in 2010 and has remained unchallenged since. The holder of 3 World titles, his career to date has seen him defeat several highly decorated fighters including Rungravee Sasiprapa, Dimitry Varats and French star Amine Kacem. With 21wins from his 23 professional bouts, Dean is well-regarded in the Muay Thai world and joins a line-up at The Main Event of the very highest quality that already features Michael Wakeling, Panicos Yusuf and Daniel Mcgowan.
Dean’s opponent will be released in the New Year

Dale has been out of the ring for so long I don't think he's ever getting back into the mix, Dan has beaten Paulo at 53.5 (former #1) Kieran Mckadkill (#2 @55), Hes proved he's a level above the rest of the lads below him in the UK, couple of interesting fights for me though are Lasari but I think Dan would handle him or Howsen, that's the BIG domestic fight, end of next year you could add James into that to

cant see howson fighting dan as hes wbc champ, dan and dean surely wouldnt fight they are mates/sparring partners. howson will be fighting mini t again which i think dan is the better fighter of the pair but mini is a big name in oz, dan vs mini t would be a good fight, dean vs mini t would be a ko for dean im sure, i heard howson won the fight by some of mini t's friends but it was very close they say, if the rematch is in a years time i think mini t is getting better and howson is getting older, i think it will be a hard fight for howson to win
AndyBC

I won't fight Dan M, we've both openly stated this on here and fb etc. We are friends and both on totally different paths, he's on his way up and really starting to make a name for himself now where as I am the other end of the scale, I've created my name and I've set my legacy so to speak and at the end of my fighting career. I've some big big fights lined up for 2015 against top opposition so hoping to go out on a high.

Personally Mini T is a harder fight than Dan just IMO more due to the size factor and strength wise. Dan is still young and he can fight the lower weights (52.5-53.5kgs which I make easy and also prefer now) I actually felt small at 55kgs against Mini T, more so due to him not making weight. But he is physically a strong strong guy and dangerous! But I clearly beat him, rounds 3,4 and 5 I took no worries and should have got the win. Ask Liam Lun hes seen it. But I also didn't train properly for it, I have no one here at my gym to pad work me and all my fighters are novice so sparring is just playing about for me, and I still won that fight, well should have! I'll be nearer 37yrs old when we rematch next year but I'll be fitted and stronger and will smash him this time round and not leave anything in those shit judges hands. I'll actually Have a pad an there to train me and will be just as sharp as I was at Smash!

Good luck with the show and tell us who everyone's opponents are for godsake!

As promised, the first fight to feature on The Main Event, May 23rd is:

Panicos Yusuf (All Powers, Stockport) vs Stephen Meleady (Bad Company, Leeds)

This lightweight clash sees double World Muay Thai champion Panicos Yusuf up against teak tough Irishman Stephen Meleady, who recently relocated to Leeds to train at the Bad Company gym. Panicos has beaten several high calibre opponents during his 37-fight career including former stadium champion Rittijak Kaewsamrit, Dutch star Sergio Wielzen and Italian Calgero Palmieri, and is currently enjoying a 21-fight winning streak. However, WMC European champion Meleady presents a test like few others the man from All Powers has previously faced, his aggressive, relentless fighting style and never-say-die determination proving too much for many so far. Meleady has fought at the very highest level against the best fighters on the planet and is one of few westerners to be ranked at the famous Lumpini stadium in Thailand. He fought on The Main Event in 2012, taking a win over UK Number 1 super-lightweight Keith Mclachlan and also holds a win over Paul Karpowicz. Having lived in Thailand for several years he has seen and done it all in a career spanning 53 fights, during which time he has faced the likes of world renowned Thai superstar Saenchai, Sam-A and Rungravee Sasiprapa, to whom he dropped a very close decision. This fight features two of the very best lightweights in Europe up against one another in one of many bouts on The Main Event that will be in contention for fight of the year!

Michael Wakeling (Scorpions, London) vs Chad ‘2Slick’ Sugden (Suggy’s Gym, Newark)

To be fought under K1-rules, this fight sees Newark’s rising star Chad Sugden take on his toughest challenge to date in the form of double World champion Michael Wakeling, who has sat at the top of the UK rankings for many years.
The name Wakeling is synonymous with combat sports in the UK and between Michael and his brother Stephen there is little the family have not achieved. Michael claimed both European and World honours in Muay Thai at middleweight before moving onto the kickboxing circuit and beating the likes of Ali Gunyar and Pajonsuk Superpro en route to collecting the Enfusion World strap at 75kg. His record is unrivalled, reading 29wins, 1 loss and 1 draw from 31 professional contests.
At the age of just 20, Sugden has already achieved more than most and is seen as one of the best kickboxers the UK has produced in recent years. With an amateur record of over 100 bouts, during which he picked up several European and World titles, Sugden laid the foundations for his professional career from an early age under the guidance of his father and trainer Dean, himself a former World title holder. Sugden made his professional debut on The Main Event in 2012 and has enjoyed a meteoric rise towards the top since. He is the current ISKA Oriental rules World champion and has fought on the biggest stages in the world already under the K1-Global banner. In 2014 he took the highly regarded Enriko Kehl the distance on a fortnight’s notice in Germany, before returning to England and claiming a win over domestic rival Nathan Epps on The Main Event in June, taking his professional record to 12 wins and 3 losses from 15 bouts.
Will Wakeling extend his 10-year unbeaten run? Or will the young man from Newark come away with his biggest win?

Behave Ricky mate, We've already been thru this loads of times now. Both on different paths, not a fight either of us needs. I'm 35yrs old and will be 36 in May, I'm old as shit and looking to retire maybe the end of this year, beginning of next depending on results etc. Dan's 18 ha. Don't get me wrong if i get paid the right money id fight anyone at all, but the money i want won't be offered so it won't happen mate.

AndyBC

And if things where different Pabs i would mate, but as it is I'm still fighting top level against world class opponents from abroad, got rematches set up with a Thai that has already beat me and a rematch in the cage on JWP's show against Dan Mini T Williams again and awaiting a confirmation against a great opponent in America, as well as a few other things in the pipeline, i don't need a fight with Dan, I need and want these bigger fights, more money and better opportunities abroad like I'm getting, end of the day if all goes well I'll hang the gloves up end of this year, early part of next so i want big fights and rematches with people who have already beaten me tbh.

Like i say someone pay me and Dan the money we both want and I'm sure we would both do it. But no one in the UK will pay me what I'd want.

Our next fight release is an international bout:

Daniel Mcgowan (Petchnoi, Northampton) vs Gery Bavetta (Team Cacciato, Italy)

A fight that has been sought after by many promotions in recent times, this mouth-watering clash featuring two of the most talented bantamweights outside of Thailand will take place at The Main Event on May 23rd.

UK number 1 Mcgowan needs no introduction, having propelled himself towards the top in the past 12 months with some eye-catching displays, during which time he stayed undefeated and took wins over Paolo Da Silva and Spanish Champion Nestor Rodriguez, among others.

In November last year he moved to Thailand to train at the Petchyindee Academy and fought there the following month, winning on points. A former triple junior World champion, Daniel is tipped for the very top by those in the know and boasts a professional record of 19 wins from 21 fights, with 1 draw and only a single defeat.

In the opposite corner on May 23rd will be WBC ranked Gery Bavetta, a veteran of 61 bouts who has fought some of the biggest names around in different weight divisions, including Albert Chey, Amine Kacem and Davy Macintosh.

After losing to Birmingham’s Damien Trainor a few years ago in England, Bavetta spent a lot of time in Thailand rebuilding his career and has fought in the Lumpini stadium and on the King’s Cup, winning on both occasions, in addition to claiming a knockout win over former UK number 1 Paolo Da Silva in 2013.

Bavetta is also currently training in Thailand and is due to compete in a 4-man tournament in a fortnight’s time. A 3 time Italian champion, his record of 47 wins, 13 losses and 1 draw is testament to his ability and he will be looking to add another English scalp to his CV with a win at The Main Event!

This is a fight that has been spoken of for the past 12 months and one we are absolutely thrilled to be hosting!

Andrew Lofthouse (Evolve, Manchester) vs Matt Mckeown (Diamond Academy, Willenhall)

Our next fight is a domestic clash in the lightweight division featuring UK #5 Andrew Lofthouse vs local fighter Matt Mckeown, who currently occupies 6th spot in the rankings.

Lofthouse needs no introduction to the Muay Thai stage in the UK, having been very active in the past 18 months, during which time his popularity has soared. A former amateur World champion known for his unorthodox fighting methods, Lofthouse’s crowd-pleasing style has seen him take wins over some highly rated names including Brian Totty and Ross George.

After dropping a points decision to Keith Mclachlan on The Main Event in June, Lofthouse progressed to the semi finals of an 8-man tournament at a few day’s notice in September, before ending the year on a high with a knockout win over former World champion Anthony Ferguson in a fight of the night performance in November.

In the opposite corner on May 23rd will be Matt Mckeown from the Diamond Academy in Willenhall. Trained by triple World champion Dean James, Mckeown is a strong all-round fighter with an impressive record of 13 wins from 16 professional fights.

Capable of fighting on the outside, as demonstrated in his last fight where he took a wide points win over Supergym’s Mike Bateman, and equally comfortable utilising solid clinch-work and elbows, English champion Mckeown has all the tools to make an impression in the lightweight division. He, too, counts a win over Ross George on his CV and is looking for another top scalp here with a win in front of his hometown fans.

Something of a clash of fighting styles, with Lofthouse’s entertaining and unpredictable approach up against a more traditional, disciplined stylist in Mckeown. There can only be one winner…

Added to the card:

Greg Wootton (KO Gym, London) vs Rungrat Sasiprapa (Thailand)

UK number 1 super-lightweight Greg ‘The Prodigy’ Wootton enters The Main Event stage looking for another huge scalp after a pivotal 2014

Greg, who is the holder of the WMC MAD World Title and the Enfusion World strap, boasts a record of 29 wins from 33 fights and has faced some of the world’s biggest names already. In November last year Greg achieved what many have described as the best win ever by an English fighter, defeating top Thai and multiple champion Petchboonchu FA Group, who is regarded as one of the very best fighters of recent years. Other notable scalps for the Londoner include Andrei Kotsur, Panicos Yusuf and Luke Turner.

On May 23rd Greg faces yet another tough test against a Thai fighter in the form of Sasiprapa Gym’s Rungrat, who, at the age of 19, already has over 80 fights experience and is tipped as one of Thailand’s next superstars. This weekend Rungrat impressed on the Siam Warriors show in Ireland, demolishing his Dutch opponent with relentless kicks and knees to take a 2nd round stoppage win.

A matchup of the highest order, this fight will be worth the entrance fee on its own!

All was going too well!

Unfortunately the scheduled bout between Daniel Mcgowan and Gery Bavetta is off the show. Daniel has taken ill in the last 48 hours and has been unable to shift whatever he has caught.
We had hoped he would be able to but his condition has only worsened overnight and he will likely be laid up in bed for the next week or so.
Disappointing for him and his opponent who had both trained extremely hard for this fight.

Unfortunately that's the fight game and the reason why we always match numerous top-level bouts on The Main Event card.

Revised fight card features 16 bouts including 4 current UK number 1 ranked fighters, 2 athletes from Thailand and and the hugely anticipated IKF World
Championship bout
