The Karate Kid got me into Ju-Jitsu, I looked at Ralph Macchio's character Daniel, and thought to myself...I can do that. Luckily..I came across my first sensei, Sensei Robert Kabongo, by chance. I believe in fate / kismet. Things always happen for a reason and sometimes we don't understand that reason until many years afterwards...

Two of my sisters did kickboxing before me and told me I should do it.
My sisters boyfriend competed at it too. But what actually made me start was, i used to work with a girl who did Thai-boxing (with Dave Jones in Chorley). She used to nag me to start doing it and so i did.
I've always liked martial arts though! My Uncle used to be into Karate, and used to hire all of Bruce Lee's films for me when i was a kid.
I quite liked Van Damme's earlier movies, but i can't stick him now!

JCVD's films kickboxer and bloodsport got me into kickboxing as well!!!

Onna:
that robert kabongo geezer, is he the african dude? ive heard hes bloody lethal!
Onna

Farhad: How do you know Sensei Robert Kabongo? He is African, but lived most of his life in Belgium and he lives somewhere in Derby now. He is technically fantastic, really strong and nearly killed half of his students in training...it was from his classes that I lost all my excess weight! I got it literally beaten out of me!!

Unfortunately, we seperated on bad terms and although my brother has regular contact with him, he has continously declined my offer of coming to visit my clubs. It's a shame, because without him, Ju-Jitsu wouldn't have taken off in Bradford the way it has. My students would love to meet him and I would like to see him again. I can only hope that one day he'll change his mind. :-)

I tried to get my students to wash my car and paint the garden fence...but with no success! Some of the kids bought me a bonsai tree for my birthday...I must remind them of Mr Myagi, hopefully my nature and not my short round physique!! Only joking :-)))

first jimmy wang yu films and then bruce lee had influenced me (1972's), however i was also thinking that there was something wrong with them ...

so, i started first with boxing and greco romen wrestling instead of any oriental dsicipline ...and when i discovered that i can easily destroy friends coming from karate, tkd, judo families with that with the experience , i was very happy...

Onna:

Robert Kabongo :
yeah rememebr i lived in bradford for a while too? thats how i met Taz, and taz used to bully me in sparring :P
ive heard that robert had the tendency to empty his classes very quickly with his crazy training methods !!!
Onna

He did have a tendancy to empty his classes quickly, infact for a few months, I was his only student!! Although he was harsh in his training methods, I learnt a great deal from him. Not just Ju-Jitsu techniques, but about dedication and commitment. His motto was " as long as 1 student turns up for training, then he was prepared to teach".

I think back to some of the things he used to make us do in training...and I'm amazed that I didn't break any bones! I was terrified of certain training methods but more petrified of him if I didn't do them! I used to close my eyes and hope for the best!!

My second instructor had more style, very graceful and smooth. I guess I got the best of both worlds. My teaching style is a combination from both of them!

Onna i wouldn't worry about your old instructor not speaking to you, the guy i trained with for years moved away and left a club which was falling apart at the seams, his parting shot was that i would never fill his shoes, it was only after he leaft that i discovered that he had been lying to us for yrs, and that his knoweledge of MT was at best limited, i have since not only filled his shoes but have outgrown them, i now look back at a lot of wasted yrs with this guy and wonder what i could have achieved under someone less selfish.

you have done well be proud.

ps he wouldn't teach a class unless thier were 8.

I think everyone of my era (19 now) watched daniel son take out big guys with his stupid crane kick and bonzai-tree-fascination, and thought... i wana do that! or at least... i wana be able to beat up big guys!

Obviously JCVD is a legend and inspired me to move to kickboxing rather than just TKD but really, why are his fights in films so slow!! Bruce lee is lightening fast in his films yet ive been told JCVD is actually gud at martial arts so why do his films still look like the other guy is just standing still waiting to get hit!??

Outdoing your Instructor is Good if they Lie to you !( Calling them isnt a good thing, Unless youve been badly Treated )

Honesty and Integrity and Being Humble, and to Know your Limitations are Qualities i / we strive to Achieve and Many Other Qualities to become a "Instructor" / Teacher !
Its a hard Path to Walk But the people you help and meet along the Path make it Rewarding !

Honesty is the best policy.

I teach a group of boys aged 10, during my first session with them, I was spat at, called names and one even tried to pull my hair! I pinned the ring leader to the floor, got their attention, and now 4 months on...there's discipline in the dojo.

What we have learnt from each other is mutual respect but also the importance and value of honesty. I expelled 2 for lying. The following week one of the students kicked another student (who started crying). I asked him if he had kicked him...and you could see the thought going into his response.
Does he lie and maybe get away with it?
Or tell the truth and be disciplined?
He told the truth, got disciplined and carried on with his training. I felt really proud of him.

Most of the kids in this particular class are statemented (regularly being suspended from school). And although I find them hard work, I really enjoy teaching them. The school's run out of funding for next year but I'm going to teach for them on a voluntary basis. I see alot of potential in the kids and teaching them is a reward in itself!!

Another thing ref: Teachers / Trainers / Instructors
At the end of the day ! we All had good ones and some Not so Good !
And a saying thats what Years ahead of its Time

"Absorb what is Usefull"
Let Go what is Not !!!!!!!!!!!

I think even Bad ones- ( was they Bad when you was there Learning from "Them Though" ???? )- We Can Learn From, As they Cant be All Bad ! ?
As they mustve had some Knowledge in the First Place !
Yes, yes, I / we Know rhere Can be Bad Ones ! We All Know 1 or 2 ? !
But point is !
We need them Sometimes, as how would we know a "Good" `1` ??????
:-p
