I train with Dave Jackson at Warrington Muay Thai and on Sunday 6th August this year we are putting on a charity event to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

It seems these days that almost everybody knows someone who is affected by cancer (3 of my friends lost one of their parents in the space of 6 days recently, all to cancer) and so Im hoping this event will get a lot of support, which in turn means we will raise a lot of money.

The event will be held at Dave's gym under the title 'Kick 4 Cancer Research' and will basically involve teams of 5 people in a race to complete a total of 4000 kicks in as short a time as possible (ie 800 kicks per person). The event should last for a few hours but there will be other things going on as well and prizes for the winners and runners up, along with a prize for whichever individual raises the most money. There will also be a raffle held and Im currently in the process of getting together some prizes that, thanks to the help of others, are already way more impressive than I thought I could ever manage so I would like to say a massive thanks to Rob Cox who has agreed to help me get some signed gloves and shorts from some of the fighters over in Thailand, and to Ole Laursen who has very generously offered one months free stay at his Legacy Gym in Ubon as a prize. Im still waiting to hear back from a few other people about further prizes so I will keep this thread updated.

There will be an equipment stall at the gym on the day, with all profits made from sales going to charity (courtesy of Fight-Shop.co.uk), along with any other ideas I can come up with between now and then to help raise more money !

Although this is the first time the event has been advertised I have managed to speak with a few people beforehand and would like to say a massive thanks to both Richard Smith of Bad Company gym in Leeds and Craig Brown of Wigan Thaiboxing who have both said that they will definitely enter a team. Huge thanks as well to Darren Phillips of GFC Bury, Sandy Holt at Bolton Thaiboxing and Tricia McKeary at Beastmasters as they have all said that they will do what they can to help as well.

If anyone would be interested in entering a team then could you please let me know asap so that I can start to get an idea of numbers. If you are interested then if you could email me your details to si@warrington-thaiboxing.com then I will send out a copy of the poster to put up in the gym, along with sponsor forms and further details of the day of the event.

All of the costs involved in setting up this event are to be met privately and no money will be taken out of the funds raised to cover these costs. 100% of monies raised will be going to Cancer Research UK.

The poster is ready to go but I don’t have a clue how to put it on Ax ! Dave has a copy so Im hoping he will put it up shortly.

There will be a £100 donation from www.kickboxingshop.com

Thanks to Mr C for agreeing to take part and to Nige who is clearly too lazy to take part and so would rather just donate some cash !!! Either way works for me, as long as we are raising money for the charity.

Just had an email from the editor of the Warrington Guardian to confirm that they will cover the event and will be sending a photographer down to the gym on the day.

Baz - you have mail mate

Hook - sorry to hear about your nan. If you, or anybody else, would like to help contribute to the event but are unable to make it then you can purchase raffle tickets at £2 per ticket. I have not got a final list of the prizes at the moment but as I mentioned in my original post Im hoping to get signed gloves and shorts etc from some of the top fighters so the prizes will be along these lines.

By purchasing the tickets not only are you contributing to the event but you are also giving yourself the chance to win a prize in return. If anybody would like any tickets then email me your details.

Posted: 2006-06-29 13:59:23
suppose we will have to state some rules for quality of kicks....
how about....

minimum height - must be above pad-holders waist
Put the foot down in-between every kick (for the karate and kung-fu guys)

jdm

Pad holder will be part of the team but the person counting the kicks will not. One person per team kicking at a time, all kicks must be mid point kicks, no low kicks allowed (if anyone is daft enough to want to do 4000 high kicks then feel free !)

As Mr C has said the foot must return to the floor between kicks. There will be a demo on the day of the event so everyone knows what is required before we get started.
Dave Jackson
Posted: 2006-06-29 16:01:07
If I have to do the demo can everyone watch really really carefully as i dont want to have to demonstrate more than 3 kicks :)

I cant claim the credit for this, that belongs to jdm. He masterminded the whole thing shortly after my Dad died and I am just more than happy to be along for the ride.

For those thinking of putting in a team, just do it....Dont let the thought of not winning stop you from getting involved with this (that goes for anyone ever thinking about fighting also)

We are fielding two teams and whoever gets me on their team will be on a losing team :)

Noi...jdm wants to know if you want me on your team?

I would just to say that I have just lost my father two weeks ago to this disease. We only found out 6 weeks ago that he had it, then there was nothing they could do.

I wish you all the best with the Fund Raiser and wish you 100% success, and I am behind you all the way. If there is anything or anyway we could have contributed from Aus, I would have.

Ezekiel 25:17

The path of the rightous man is bisect on all side the inequities and the tyrany of evil men
Blessed is he,in the name of charity and good will, shepards the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truely his brothers keeper and the finder of lost children.
And I will strike down with great vengance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers and you will know my name is the lord when I lay my vengance upon thee!!!

What a day !! The easiest way to sum things up in four simple words is:

BAD COMPANY WON EVERYTHING !!!!!

The ladies team won the race to 4000 kicks, closely followed by the mens team and Rich Cadden then proceeded to win almost every prize in the raffle !!

Every team put in a fantastic effort but the way in which Lisa Houghton-Smith managed her team (despite being heavily pregnant) made the difference and the lads at Bad Co now have to live with being beaten by the ladies !!

Big thanks to Mike Tobin and the lads from Nongkee for coming down, and to Rich Weston who made it all the way up from Birmingham. Rich actually joined one of the ladies teams which I didnt have a problem with, although when he asked me where he could get a matching sports bra and thong from I was a little bit worried !!

Thank you to all the Warrington lot who helped throughout the day but you will all have to be punished on Tuesday for failing to win the race - Im sure Budgie will see to that !!

Just want to say a massive thanks to everybody who bought raffle tickets or donated to the charity. There were about 7 or 8 winners who were not there today and so I will get your prizes sorted out asap, had a long day so need some time to relax now.

I can confirm that winners off AX though were Chalky, Phil Hardaker, Master Sken and Liam Robinson.

The main prizes of the free training in Thailand went to Stephen Meikle (Kaewsamrit) and Rich Cadden (Legacy Gym).

Im not sure at this stage how much we raised but I will get a better idea over the next week or two. I also have a load of photos from today so I will get them up asap.

Thanks to Dave J for all your help with this mate and to anyone else who helped that I may have forgotten about.

Last but by no means least a massive thank you to Rob Cox. We sold almost 500 raffle tickets meaning that the raffle alone has helped raise almost £1000 for Cancer Research, none of which would have been possible without the fantastic prizes that Rob sorted out for us - thanks mate.

Its ok mate. Throughly enjoyed it (apart from coming 2nd, obviously!).

i think off the top of my head bad co raised in the region of £2200 + shrapnel from yesterdays collecting in town....I really hammered the shoppers in York!!! LOL

I am pleased the badco speculation paid of with the wins in the raffle, but I think we will need the sweet solice of victory in the raffle when Mrs Houghton-Smith starts taking the mickey next week! :)

Keep us updated with the grand total, and let the warm feeling of good karma wash over us all! :)

Look fwd to the photos.

I would though, like to try the shorts on that I have won as being there is 90ibs weight difference between myself and Sakadpetch, I think it could be a photo opportunity not to be missed and when shown on AX may offer a humorous respite to those affected by the nasty C word (Oh and I am more Johnny Vegas build than Christian Di Paolo).

I think every AX member who has won some shorts should submit a picture of themselves to AX, wearing said attire.

Smugness is not an attractive female quality!

It was a great day - congratulations to everyone who took part and to Simon and Dave for organising it.

I thought I'd got away with it yesterday, my legs weren't too bad but they seized up last night and I've been in agony today! Charlotte says she's walking downstairs like shes got calipers on and Greg said he has to use his hands to swing his legs in and out the car! Walking downstairs seems to be worst today!

There were 2 ladies on the day that need a special thank you.

Lisa H-S for a heroic effort at 7 months pregnant and one of the girls on one of our teams who I wont name but will tell you she she is just short of 50 yrs old and did her first interclub last month. (doesnt look a day over 30 either)

Sorry for taking so long to post on this thread again but its taken quite a while to get the money in, which is understandable really as a lot of people have been away on holiday.

Anyway, I have today sent Cancer Research UK £3500 but am still waiting on another £500 in sponsor money to come in. On top of that quite a few people have sent their money direct to the charity and so I think the final total raised is round about the £4500 mark which is a fantastic amount.

Thanks again to everybody who took part/donated/bought raffle tickets/sponsored the teams, and again a big thanks to Dave J and Rob Cox for all of their help with the event.

We have decided to make this an annual event, although next years will be arranged so that it doesnt clash with the main weeks of peoples summer holidays as loads of people have said they wanted to join in the event but couldnt because they were away.

Obviously I cant ask Rob to produce the kind of prizes he did for this event every year and so Im already working on a few new ideas to try and make the event as good next time round.

Thanks again everyone

Si
